SURGERY NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Welcome to the first newsletter of the 20202021 academic year. What has occurred during the current year would have been previously unimaginable. The profound implications of a global pandemic and the reverberations of horrific events of social injustice have indelibly changed our lives and how we live them. I have continued to be incredibly impressed and grateful for the resilience, flexibility and leadership of the staff, residents, fellows and faculty of the Department of Surgery. Along these lines, herein, you will find details of the Department of Surgery’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion led by Dr. Carissa Webster-Lake and the important mission that will be pursued moving forward. Also, please take a moment to review some of the efforts being made to accommodate resident candidate recruitment and interviewing in this era of social distancing. Despite the challenges that we face as a profession and as a society, the Department continues to evolve and to pursue excellence. In this episode’s Faculty Spotlight, we introduce you to Dr. Thomas Ng, the Eastridge Cole Professor and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the important recruitment of Dr. Andrew J. Kerwin, Professor and Chief of the Division of Trauma/ Surgical Critical Care. We also would like to take the opportunity to introduce our new outstanding class of specialty fellows. Finally, please join me in congratulating Dr. Ankush Gosain, Division of Pediatric Surgery, on the award of a prestigious National Institutes of Health R01 Research Grant examining the physiology of Hirschsprung’s Disease. This is truly a superb accomplishment. We continue to look forward to another successful year for the Department of Surgery. Please enjoy the latest issue of the UTHSC Surgery News. Wishing safety and health to you and your families. Sincerely,

EXPERT IN ROBOTIC SURGERY TO LEAD THORACIC SURGERY DIVISION AT UTHSC Peggy Reisser, Communications Manager
Thomas Ng, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, came to Memphis in April to build the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Ng was recruited to UTHSC’s College of Medicine by David Shibata, MD, FACS, FASCRS, chair of the Department of Surgery, to be a key player in the development of the university’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer program. A specialist in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, Dr. Ng serves as the Eastridge Cole Professor and chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. He is building the division on several fronts in line with the university’s blueprint for its evolving cancer program “A big part of the job is to take excellent care of patients,” Dr. Ng said. “The other parts of the job include teaching the students and residents about thoracic surgery, and also to reestablish a robust research component.”
Thomas Ng, MD, FRCS(C), FACS (photo by Natalie Brewer/UTHSC)
Dr. Ng comes to UTHSC after almost 19 years at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended the University of Toronto for his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and chemistry, and medical school at Queen’s University School of Medicine in Ontario. He completed his residency in general surgery at Brown University, and fellowships in critical care medicine at the University of Toronto and thoracic surgery at the University of Ottawa.
He plans to develop a multidisciplinary thoracic team to include medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonary doctors, radiologists, pathologists, as well as several thoracic surgeons like himself. He also envisions developing a lung nodule screening program in the community that could help identify lung cancers in early stages. “I believe that I bring a wealth of experience that will help our program to be highly successful,” Dr. Ng said. “I am very happy to be a part of Dr. Shibata’s team.”
Dr. Ng said he was attracted to UTHSC by the excellent surgery program established by Dr. Shibata, and by the opportunity to lead a developing division that will have a major impact locally, statewide, and beyond. His goal is “to establish a comprehensive academic thoracic surgery program to serve the patients of the Memphis region,” he said.
Dr. Ng’s wife, Amy, is a nurse and managed the gastrointestinal endoscopy center at Kent County Hospital in Rhode Island, before moving to Memphis. They have two daughters, Caroline, a second-year student at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy; and Elizabeth, a freshman at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.
His vision involves a focus on non-cardiac, thoracic surgery using minimally invasive surgical techniques, including precision robotic surgery that generally allows for faster recovery for patients. The division will care for patients with benign, malignant thoracic and esophageal diseases, with a special interest and expertise in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal pathologies, chest wall tumors, and pleural diseases.
Dr. Shibata said the university is extremely fortunate to have been able to recruit Dr. Ng. “He is a nationally recognized surgeon and researcher in the field and is a consummate multiple award-winning educator,” Dr. Shibata said. “We look forward to him being an important part of our community. 10
