ABOUT GALVESTON AND CITY RESOURCES
WELCOME TO GALVESTON
Galveston Island, less than an hour south of Houston, is more than just a resort town The small city has a long history to match its rich beauty and charm—it’s been the home of buccaneers and tycoons and was once called the “Wall Street of the South” because of the wealth and prosperity garnered as the nation’s second most prosperous port .
Galveston’s historic elegance is often paralleled to that of Charleston, Savannah and New Orleans, with architectural examples from every era since the 1820s A strong connection to nature also features prominently in Galveston, with the beach and bays, endless preserved marshlands, clear skies and open space .
Galveston’s famous Seawall is lined with shops, restaurants and the Pleasure Pier, with game booths and rides . On the bay, the three pyramids of Moody Gardens punctuate the skyline Here, guests can walk through a tropical rainforest, experience various IMAX films or explore a large aquarium
Downtown’s Strand and nearby streets are filled with shops, cafes and live music . In December, the island hosts Dickens on the Strand, a festival that revisits the charm of England’s
Victorian Era Mardi Gras Galveston!, Texas’ largest Mardi Gras celebration, brings grand parades, great bands, food and fun for two weeks in February Throughout the year, the Strand sees several other large events like the Yaga’s Wild Game BBQ Cookoff, the Lone Star Biker Rally, Oktoberfest and the periodic Art Walks .
Downtown is also the epicenter for the arts in Galveston The Grand 1894 Opera House hosts several performances throughout its season, and just blocks away the East End Theater Company runs a several-show season each year with outstanding local actors and producers . Throughout downtown, several art galleries display the talents of local artists .

• Federal Direct Loans
• Federal Pell Grant (Undergraduates working on first degree only)
• Work Study
• Scholarships
• Alternative Loans
• Institutional Loans
• Institutional Grants
Types of Loans
A Subsidized Loan is awarded on the basis of financial need . Interest does not accrue on the loan while the student is in school During this time, the federal government pays the interest on the loan Interest will begin to accrue when the student begins repayment or deferment Only undergraduate students are eligible for subsidized loans
An Unsubsidized Loan is not based on financial need . Interest begins to accrue from the day the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full Students can choose to pay the interest while they are in school or allow it to accumulate until repayment Remember that paying the interest while you are in school will save you more money over the life of the loan!
A great website to visit is studentaid.gov . You can get information about loan limits, interest rates, payment calculators and much more

To sign up for the installment plan, please log into MySTAR through Student Financials . This is especially important if you are paying cash for tuition, in the School of Medicine, or in a program with a clinical year where your tuition is billed by the year instead of semester . Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP) is designed to provide team-based collaborative educational and practice experiences for students in the School of Nursing, the School of Health Professions, the John Sealy School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Public and Population Health UTMB embraces the definition of interprofessional education created by the World Health Organization that states, “Interprofessional education occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes . ”
UTMB embodies this definition by providing a culture of interprofessional education and practice through a myriad of experiences to help realize the following vision, mission, and goals:
IPEP Vision:
To be at the forefront of innovative interprofessional education for future generations of healthcare providers leading to excellent health outcomes
IPEP Mission:
Together, we prepare students to excel as team members to advance health
IPEP Goals:
▶ Enhance the learning environment to prepare students to work on interprofessional teams .
▶ Equip students to graduate with necessary skills for work on interprofessional teams
What kinds of activities and experiences does IPEP offer?
The Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (OIPEP) coordinates a variety of sessions designed to help students from all five schools at UTMB to learn from, with, and about each other’s professions . Activities such as small group experiences, practice and service-learning opportunities, and simulation activities will be selected and/or enhanced as represented within our model . Please note: many IPEP activities are interwoven into several courses
Beginning in the Fall of 2022 IPE activities became a mandatory part of the core curriculum of all early learners . Students are required to participate and complete four of the six following activities to progress .
1 Disaster Day
This student-led experience provides a large-scale simulation of a community emergency Participants play an active role in the simulation designed to help healthcare professionals learn how to work collaboratively in response to a community disaster . Participants will be required to attend a training session prior to the event .
2 “What’s Wrong With Warren?” – An Interprofessional, Interactive Case Study and Discussion
This event centers on a case of a high school student who develops a life-threatening infection . Students from all disciplines will meet in faculty-facilitated small groups to discuss their roles and responsibilities . A consultation phase will follow in which students will meet with various professions . A debrief will bring all students together for discussion and to create a timeline that displays the involvement of disciplines throughout the case . The case will introduce public/population health concepts and will include the following three phases of care –acute response, community/public health response, and aftercare/rehabilitation
3 . TeamSTEPPS® for Diagnosis Improvement
TeamSTEPPS® training is an evidence-based system used to prepare students and health professionals to work in effective collaborative teams to increase patient safety and health professions work satisfaction . The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Department of Defense developed the program to improve communication and teamwork skills to mitigate medical errors .
THE HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER
OIPEP has redesigned the original TeamSTEPPS® program to maintain the fundamentals yet provide a relative, applicable approach for all schools TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainers lead this workshop and highlight the communication and leadership skills through engaging interactive team-building exercises . in interprofessional groups with a community member .
4 BaFá BaFá – A Cross Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion Simulation
This experience is a face-to-face simulation intended to improve participants’ cross- cultural competence by helping them understand the impact of culture on the behavior of people and groups . Participants experience “cultural shock” by interacting with a culture that has different values, behaviors, and problem-solving tactics .
5 . “Engage Me” – A Series All About the Patient
The “Engage Me” series consists of monthly sessions on a variety of topics designed for students to hear the voices of patients and caregivers Each topic will have its objectives specific to the topic The overarching objectives are:
▶ Place interests of patients and populations at the center of interprofessional health care delivery and population health programs and policies, with the goal of promoting health and health equity across the life span .
▶ Explore contemporary issues for persons and populations affected by healthcare concerns .
▶ Reflect on the population’s personal stories and apply to healthcare professional roles and responsibilities .
▶ Embrace the cultural diversity and individual differences that characterize patients, populations, and the health team
6
. From
Bench to Bedside – A Discovery Challenge for Interprofessional Teams
Students will become part of dynamic interprofessional teams of aspiring researchers and health professionals to design groundbreaking experiments, bridge the gap between lab work and patient care, and gain invaluable insights into complex diseases . No research experience necessary! The objectives of this challenge are:
▶ Engage with students of other professions and disciplines to explore how unique backgrounds can contribute to a comprehensive understanding of a disease
▶ Gain the experience of working in an interdisciplinary team and collaborating across professions to generate innovative solutions for preventing a disease
▶ Understand how each discipline contributes to the broader goal of improving patient outcomes
▶ Learn to manage ethical dilemmas commonly encountered by scientists and healthcare professionals in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world patient care
▶ Learn basic steps of conducting scientific experiments
How will I as a student benefit from IPE?
Students develop skills and gain experiences working collaboratively across cultures with patients, patients’ families, other healthcare professionals, and communitybased providers to enhance health care and wellness . Graduates of UTMB Health will be leaders and innovators, advancing collaborative interprofessional teamwork across every area of health care
UTMB Interprofessional Scholars Program
Through IPEP, UTMB Health students will have the opportunity to earn the distinction of “Interprofessional Scholar”, by:
▶ Attending two (2) IPE Scholar's meetings .
▶ Work in teams with other scholars on an Immersion Project to be presented at the annual IPEP Symposium
▶ Participate in Disaster Day .
