FROZEN CAIRO
A regeneration program for declining historic neighborhoods. The case study of Arab al Yassar Master of Architecture Thesis completed with Sara Maldina Supervisors: Daniele Pini, Romeo Farinella Co-Supervisor: Mario Benedetto Assisi
The historic city of Cairo is an exceptional testimony to the evolution of Islamic civilization and to mankind’s urban experience. Its uniqueness lies not only in its monuments and historical districts’ architectural wealth, but also in the human and social heritage, which reveals itself in a vernacular living dimension. Stifled between the uncontrolled development dynamics of Africa’s biggest metropolis and the short-sighted conservation policies of the Egyptian authorities, today the historical core is in very serious decline. Beside the monuments, islands preserved as open-air museums,
there are extensive residential areas, frozen in a state close to abandonment, with wasteland lots, full of debris, ruined structures and vacant buildings. This widespread degradation jeopardizes the urban fabric’s unity, and the traditional living practices strongly related to it. The Arab Al Yassar neighborhood was chosen as a case study for a rehabilitation program reconciling both tangible and intangible heritage conservation requirements with the vital needs of an urban settlement. Carrying out a detailed inventory of all buildings and public spaces, and analyzing the area’s socio-spatial dynamics, a strategy
has been outlined in which hard components, addressing the physical space’s conservation, interact with soft ones, responding to social and economical factors, not definable in advance. Together with the definition of a strategic framework, a development scenario has been worked out. This was split into actions aiming to solve the most urgent problems and actions to start a process of urban regeneration in the meantime, bonded to the context and shaped by traditional use of space practices.

PENTAMORFOSI Mura Dionigiane Competition 3rd PRIZE completed with Giacomo Moretti, Giacomo Quercia, Michele Pelliconi, Matteo Viciani tutor: Antonello Stella
Siracusa modern expansion has took place inside the ancient fortified wall, but without any relation with the ancient fabric. The wall’s ring is now a blank space surrounding a part of the town without characterisation, but on it systems of regional size are thickening: Ortigia (Siracura historical core) south, the oil refinery north, the sea on three sides, the agricultural basin south-west. The project seeks to develop reciprocity networks and practices which aims for the exchange between material and immaterial parts, giving new meaning to the space which is the main actor in this network. The ancient wall
become a development engine for the entire region. The five original Siracusa’s quarters are recalled in five figures of the territory, the biggest transformation opportunity: the City of Tourism, of Innovation, of Earth, of Sea, the City of Memory. The ancient wall is the link which strengthen the system. The city provide itself with a sensible skin able to connect it: not only with the tarritory’s potentiality, expressed by the Five Cities, but also with the inner urban fabric. The projects distance itself from the latest expansion’s logic, starting instead from the context element. It limits the built-up area, providing it with services. It safeguard the
archaeological belt, preparing the ground for a future archaeological diffused park. The first step is the densification. The void is filled with vegetation, making more natural the transition from wall’s solid and liquid city edge. The space here is hence dug out, with a more anthropological dimension, around whom the buildings are distributed organically. Considering the time required for the vegetation to grow up, pavilions are inserted, able to host numerous activities, to make the spaces immediately usable in different phases of the day and the year, acting as the seed of a process of public space creation.

OVERCOMING THE SHIPWRECK New Concordia Island Competition 3rd PRIZE completed with Andrea Cippitelli
A disaster is a show. The time is that of the performance, a limited time by definition. Tourists - the audience - have crowded the island, to “live that instant, whose exceptionality is flattened to a short-lived trace in memory and perception. Then the show becomes old, usual, the tragedy looses its strength, its power. Far from every intensity, it comes the monument: a disaster calls for remembrance, and thus for new life. Overcoming the shipwreck, its presence macabre and bulky, recomposes it into something something positive and effective. So the Concordia is removed, and riassembled into a seabath, an architecture that, still keeping the shape of what has been there, can became part of the landscape and provide a social space.

RED CARPET International Workshop Studio Fall 2012 Ferrara School of Architecture + Universiteti Polis Tirana completed with Giacomo Quercia, Sara Dughetti tutor: Antonello Stella
The residual space generated by elevated transport infrastructure is often considered as an undesirable and useless urban eyesore. The proposal, on the contrary, look into flexible and overlapped land use patterns, turning a huge overfly in Bologna suburbs into an opportunity for abutting neighborhoods and their community. A simple line of red painting breaking through the residual space is the trigger of a process to reclaiming it both physically and psychologically, and to showcasing a series of interventions that transform it into delightful places well-programmed for public activities.

BACCHIGLIONE RIVER PARK Master3, Landscape Planning and Governance Fall 2012 Ferrara School of Architecture completed with Sara Maldina, Regina Pinheiro prof. Francesca Leder
Vicenza and its venetian villas are enlisted in the UNESCO’s World Heritage for their outstangin value. Po valley’s typical urban sprawl, though, bears witness of the foolish use of the land in the post war period, threating the historical rural heritage which finds its natual environment in the agricoltural territory. The Bacchiglione River Park aims to create sinergies between towns and countryside, making the transitions between city and landscape as smooth as possible, and reconciling public functions with the great natural and historical quality of the site. The Park edges and boundaries, as its access points, have been outlined together with a time schedule to set the phases of realisation, taking into account the long times required by territorial planning.

INDOOR VESTERBRO Master2, dep3 design studio Spring 2012 Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts prof. Katrine Lotz
Cities in northern countries have winter conditions snowfall, ice, freezing temperatures, and long night - for substantial portions of the year, though their built environments do little to embrace their climate. Winter cities lack equitable and attractive indoor places of refuge from elements. The most common contemporary response to climate is to create huge commercial developments. These draw people to shop away from the public realm while leaving city streets deserted. This proposal wants to explore the possibilities of filling urban gaps within the consolidated city with indoor public spaces, able to open themselves to the town in reaction to the climatic and urban changes of a town.

KADK LOUNGE Master2, sustainable design studio Spring 2012 Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts prof. Emanuele Naboni
As energy efficiency is becoming an obvious target, new concerns regards the control of buildings performances. The shift is from a focus into energy to a broader view of sustainability, from a technical to a qualitative and restorative approach. The studio examined analytical tools, methods and processes to support sustainable designs. The goal was to increase the “greeness of the Royal Danish Academy campus by designing student facilities Through strategies for the optimization of natural flows such as wind, sun, heat, light, water, in and around the building. the proposed design is self sufficient and contribute to a more livable and comfortable campus.

MULTIVERSE/ MULTIUNIVERSE “Contenuti per un Contenitore” Competition 2rd PRIZE completed with Lucrezia Alemanno, Michele Pelliconi
Refurbishing the old cinema of a provincial town in the center of italy, SanGiorgio di Pesaro, offers the opportunity to transform an inhomogeneous agglomerate into an urban space, as to create a new municipal centrality and rediscover civic identity. The intervention’s goal is to define a space able to offer places really usable and perceptable. A big effort has been made to understand the process of incorporating environmental issues into planning, design and constuction, favoring local and low-emission materials, and increading green areas against heat-island effect.

As for the old and abandoned cinema, the municipality aimed for a multipurpose building able to host a conference hall for the town council, a cinema, an exibition hall. Flexibility is the main object of the architectural program. Inside the old walls an inner volume of movable partition allow the wider and most free use of the space. The project focus on the building’s performance, that is, developing a design capable of providing occupant comfort at lowest carbon emission: understanding the building as a system and optimizing the interrelationships of the various components of that system to best meet the needs of the end users.

BIANELLO CASTLE Master1, conservation and restoration studio Fall 2011 Ferrara School of Architecture completed with Aurelia Marzano, Alfonso Tornitore proff. Rita Fabbri, Carla di Francesco
The restoration project in Bianello Castle seeks to urge the reappropriation of the its rooms and gardens by the community, today completely forgotten. The conservation intervention are coordinated with design strategies that aim to adapt an historic enviroment to contemporary uses and users, and to the maximum usability with the smallest amount of modifications. The simple organisation of the museal path a new outfitting of both inner wings and open spaces allow, as a matter of fact, the use of the museum through out the day. Art, culture and entertainment can merge in a unique space without affecting its historic structure.
