John R. Walker
Lives and works in Braidwood, NSW. He is best known for his paintings of the Australian landscape and has been exhibiting for over 40 years. Walker’s portraits of the Braidwood district have come to define the landscape of the region. Walker’s work is mostly about the experience of walking in the landscape, its geology, flora and historical human impact. His standard way of working is to go out and spend a day or two doing gouaches or Chinese folding books while walking around the place wandering around and looking at things to then put down whatever his immediate response is.
John R Walker’s drawings attempt to get to a point where meaning is all. It is about presence.
Hidden River
“In the karst country to the south, the rivers still flow beneath our feet; Kurrajong trees still mark those places of deep hidden wells. And Lake George still comes and goes. The Lake’s coming and going and those deep hidden wells are reminders that the spirit is still here, all around us. All it needs is open eyes and an open heart.”
This will be the 4th iteration of Contour 556, now expanded to become the Canberra Art Biennial, directed by Neil Hobbs.
