Welcome to The University of Texas at Austin where you will learn, stretch your imagination and build relationships that have a lasting impact. UT is now your home, and I am glad you are here. Orientation prepares you for your time at UT by highlighting the resources of the Forty Acres. Starting from day one, I encourage you to: Explore. From queso to quidditch, UT has something for everyone. Try the many clubs, courses and cafes on campus. Perhaps most importantly, explore different ideas. Learning takes a curious mind and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Compete and collaborate. Similar to sports, healthy competition and creative teamwork can bring out the best in you and others. ORIENTATION OVERVIEW GETTING THE MOST OUT OF ORIENTATION

PLACES TO EAT

1. Find your way around. Explore campus, check out the map at the back of this guide or via the UT Orientation app, and get to know the Forty Acres on your own. This will make it much easier to find your classes in the fall.

2. Plan out your schedule ahead of time. See which programs are required — you can’t miss those! Carve out time to get your student ID and take a campus tour if you’d like. Figure out which of the Smart is What You Do sessions you should attend. Choose which Discover UT programs you’d like to attend. Having a plan will help you get the most out of your orientation session!

3. Find out what UT has to offer. Choose a few Discover UT programs that spark your interest. Browse through the more than 1,200 student orgs on HornsLink.org. You can also use the list of phone numbers and websites in the back of your guide to find out more about a particular department or program.

Attend Spring Welcome Week: Jan. 14 - Jan. 19, 2019! The fun doesn’t stop after Spring Orientation! Join us for Spring Welcome Week, a series of events and programs to welcome you to UT Austin and help you transition to your new university. See page 13 for more details. REGISTRATION BARS If you have an advising bar, that will be cleared once you meet with your academic advisor. If you have a health (H) bar, that will be cleared once you have submitted your immunization documentation. If you have an international bar, that will be cleared once you have attended your International Briefing and Check-In session. Other kinds of bars that may appear include: • Financial – In most cases, financial bars may be paid in cash or by check at the Cashier’s Office in Main Building room 8 or cleared online at the What I Owe page. • Nonfinancial – You must resolve a nonfinancial bar in person at the administrative office that imposed it.

Enter your UT EID and password when prompted. 4. Accept the certificate if prompted to do so. 5. If a Microsoft Windows warning appears, click Connect.

This session will cover the Humanities Honors program and other honors opportunities in the College of Liberal Arts. The Humanities major allows motivated and curious students the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary major around a specific research idea. The coursework culminates in an honors thesis written during senior year. After discussing the application process, there will be ample time for questions and collective brainstorming of potential research topics through Humanities.

Come tour the main library at UT, PCL! You'll learn how the UT Libraries can help you with research, see great spaces for learning and studying, discover technology that will help you complete assignments, and hear about the other ways the UT Libraries will be there for you during your time at UT.

1-4 p.m.â&#x20AC;¨ Vick Center Drop-in Advising and Career Counseling Help Jester (JES) A115 The Vick Center for Strategic Advising and Career Counseling is offering drop-in advising for questions regarding core curriculum petitions for students attending orientation. The flag petitions coordinator will also be available to answer questions about the skills and experience flags and the flag petition process.

1-5 p.m.â&#x20AC;¨ Student Veteran Benefits Open House Student Services Building (SSB) 4.104 An open house for veterans and dependents to learn more about the process for obtaining educational benefits under the GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Hazlewood. Students can also meet with their mentor to discuss the process of registering for classes. After registering, students can bring their veteran benefit paperwork to the Student Veteran Services office for processing.

2-3 p.m. Discover UT: Block 2 Sorority and Fraternity Life on Campus

In this session, you will receive a general overview of the sorority and fraternity community at UT Austin. With nearly 7,000 members active on campus, UT Austin has one of the oldest and largest sorority and fraternity communities in the country. Members maintain high GPAs, are involved all around the Forty Acres, and contribute positively to the campus and Austin community.

Navigating Conflict @ UT: We Are Your Ombuds

Students participating in this interactive session will learn how to navigate common concerns facing students at UT Austin. The Office of the University Ombuds for Students and Staff will provide an overview of the academic and conduct policies. In addition, students will learn effective communication techniques to help when facing various types of conflict.

Engineering Internal RLP 0.112 Transfer Information Session

This session is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a major in the Cockrell School of Engineering, and it will cover the requirements and timelines for applying for transfer. While students are not required to attend this or another Information Session in order to apply for Internal Transfer to an engineering major, we request attendance before scheduling an appointment with an academic advisor in Engineering Students Services if they have additional questions.

6-7:15 p.m. Helping Yourself and Friends with Emotional Distress (dinner provided) Student Activity Center (SAC) Ballroom 2.410 Dinner will be provided at this program. At UT Austin, we look out for and take care of each other. In this session, you will learn strategies for identifying when a friend is in distress and which resources on campus can help.

HELPFUL INFORMATION STUDENT EID & ID CARD

You can upgrade your UT EID and obtain your official student ID card any time after you have been admitted to UT Austin. The ID Center is located on the first floor of the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) ID cards cost $10, and this fee must be paid within 30 days. You can pay in person at the Cashier’s Office in the Main Building, or online at the What I Owe Page on the Student Accounts Receivable Website (utexas.edu/ business/accounting/sar), or by clicking the “What I Owe” link in MyUT (my.utexas.edu). To upgrade your UT EID, you must sign the EID agreement, which gives your UT EID legal signature authority. You must also present a valid, non-expired, government-issued ID with a photo, such as a driver license or passport. High school ID cards are not acceptable. Please note that if you are younger than 18, you must have a legal guardian accompany you to upgrade your EID, and they must also have bring an official ID. If your legal guardian cannot be present at orientation, you can print the Electronic Agreement Form (orientation.utexas.edu/freshman/pre-orientation-checklist) beforehand, have it notarized and bring it to orientation. •

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS In the event of a residence hall or campus-wide emergency, University Housing and Dining and the university will use various methods to communicate with people on campus. In most incidents, emergency communication will provide instruction on Shelter in Place (take refuge where you are, away from windows, and wait for emergency instruction) or Emergency Evacuation. The Campus Siren System will activate to inform people that a dangerous situation exists. Verbal instructions will accompany the siren.

EVACUATION If there is a need to evacuate a building, students will be alerted through the fire alarm system (for fires) or through the intercom system (for other emergencies requiring evacuation of the area). When the fire alarm system and/or intercom system is activated, students must immediately evacuate. The fire alarm system is designed to give priority during an evacuation to residents who face the most imminent risk.

CREDIT BY EXAM Student Testing Services (STS) within Testing and Evaluation Services (TES) provides opportunities for students to earn credit by exam. Credit by exam means that students may “test out” of college courses. Information about claiming credits, registering for tests and more is available at testingservices.utexas.edu/credit.

TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE (TSI) If you have not taken the TSI Assessment prior to orientation, you will not be able to register for courses. If you have already taken the TSI Assessment but still have a TSI notice on your MyUT page, you must call 512-471-3614 to make an appointment with a TSI Advisor. Students who have not taken the TSI Assessment prior to orientation should contact the TSI Office immediately for additional instructions. BECOMING A CERTIFIED STUDENT VETERAN AT UT AUSTIN 1. Visit the Department of Veterans Affairs or GI Bill websites for information about the Post/911 GI Bill and other educational benefits. Contact Student Veteran Services to learn about various resources on campus, how to access your benefits and possibly receive credit for military education. 3. Attend the Student Veteran Pre-Orientation Program during your orientation session. Please bring all pertinent certification paperwork with you to the orientation session. Students MUST be in attendance in order for paperwork to be processed. Parents cannot submit paperwork for the student. 4. After registering for courses each semester, certify for your benefits. Certification for all veteransâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; educational benefits, including the GI Bill, Hazlewood exemption and benefits for survivors or dependents, is processed by the Office of the Registrar.
