New Student Guide COVER
Spring 2015
WELCOME TO TEXAS! The Spring Orientation program is designed by students and the New Student Services staff to help you become acquainted with many aspects of The University of Texas at Austin. Our goal is to provide you with the resources you need to succeed academically in an environment that fosters a sense of community and belonging. Be sure to review this Guide, check out the programs, and preview the many learning opportunities that are offered. We are committed to providing you with all the information you need for a successful academic transition to UT Austin. On Monday, Jan. 12, you need to attend the Welcome/Registration Information Meeting and a College Meeting. These meetings provide an overview of the orientation program, the online registration system and the college in which you are enrolled. Additionally, you’ll receive instructions for academic advisement. This information is essential in helping you make a smooth transition to UT Austin. Both freshman and transfer students are invited to attend these meetings. In some instances, freshman and transfer students will have separate sessions. Refer to the program descriptions on pages 8–12 for times and locations of all Spring 2015 orientation events.
Getting the most out of orientation 1. After you attend your College Meeting, review the program schedule to decide which optional sessions you want to attend. 2. (Freshman students only) Attend the Bevonomics program and one of the required UTransform sessions. 3. Before the end of orientation, have a plan for what you might want to accomplish during your academic career. Time will pass more quickly than you expect, so the sooner you get started, the more you will get out of your time at UT Austin. 2

FOR STUDENT VETERANS Using your Military Educational Benefits 1. Visit the Department of Veterans Affairs or G.I. Bill website (gibill.va.gov) for an overview of benefits. 2. Upon admission to the university, contact Student Veteran Services at 512-232-2835 or visit registrar. utexas.edu/students/cert/vetn for information on how to transfer your educational benefits to UT Austin. 3. Attend new student orientation to register for classes, take placement tests, meet with a representative from your college/school and attend the Student Veteran Orientation Session! Certification for all veterans’ educational benefits—including the GI Bill, Hazlewood exemption and benefits for survivors or dependents—are processed by the Office of the Registrar. To learn if you qualify for veterans’ education benefits, contact Student Veteran Services at utveterans@austin.utexas.edu or call 512-232-2835.
Frequently Asked Questions What should I submit with my application for VA Benefits? With their Application for VA Education Benefits, new students must submit the following: 1) VA Form 22-1990; and 2) a copy of their DD214/member 4, or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) form. Transfer students (i.e. students who have received VA education benefits at other institutions) must submit VA form 22-1995, request for Change of Program or Place of Training. For information concerning applying for VA Benefits at UT Austin visit registrar.utexas.edu/student/ certification-veteran/gi-bill.
I am currently a veteran, active duty military or a dependent using VA benefits. How can I qualify for in-state tuition? Veterans, active duty military (including active reserves and National Guard), or dependents using VA benefits may have their out-of-state tuition status waived to in-state tuition under the Texas education Code. To receive the in-state tuition waiver, please contact the Residency Office at residency@austin. utexas.edu or call 512-475-7391. The Residency Office is located within the Graduate & International Admissions Center in Walter-Webb Hall in the northwest area of campus. Office hours are weekdays from 8 a.m.– 5 p.m.
How do I receive Hazlewood benefits? The Hazlewood Act provides qualified veterans, spouses, and children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition and fee exemptions for approved programs at state-supported colleges or universities. To use or transfer benefits, complete an application and submit it to the Office of the Registrar. The University of Texas at Austin determines eligibility based on compliance with state regulations. For more information concerning applying for Hazlewood benefits at UT Austin, visit registrar.utexas. edu/student/certification-veteran/hazlewood. 4

Where can I find more information? More information for military personnel and veterans may be found by using the search term “military” on the Texas Higher Education Board website at CollegeforTexans.com, or by visiting the UT Austin Veterans Services website at utstudentveteranservices.org.
How does UT Austin determine which military education credits can count as college credit? UT Austin uses the American Council of Education (ACE) guides to research course credit and awards all recommended credit at the upper division baccalaureate level. Credit is awarded after enrollment, in a manner similar to credit by exam.

In most incidents, emergency communication will provide instruction on Shelter in Place (take refuge where you are, away from windows, and wait for emergency instruction) or Emergency Evacuation. The campus siren system will activate to inform people that a dangerous situation exists. Verbal instructions will accompany the siren.
Student Parking Options Students who drive or park a vehicle on campus must purchase a permit from Parking and Transportation Services (PTS). Only Class D student permit holders may drive past the traffic control kiosks Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. A university parking permit must be displayed to park on campus. Purchase of a surface lot permit (C, D, M and N) does not assure a parking space in a specific lot. Purchase of a garage permit (R, S, N+) generally assures an unassigned parking space in the garage in which it is valid. Parking may be restricted in any garage or surface lot for special events. For current policies, fees, and regulations, including a detailed list of parking permits, visit the PTS website at utexas.edu/parking. You can also visit the PTS office on the first level of the Trinity Garage (1815 Trinity Street), or call 512-471-PARK (7275).

ALL ABOUT TESTING All new freshman and transfer students should plan to take any relevant tests that are offered on Monday, Jan. 12 and Tuesday, Jan. 13. For information on recommended tests, visit the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)/Student Testing Services (STS) website at ctl.utexas.edu/testing, or call CTL/STS at 512- 232-2662. Tests are required and/or recommended of most students before they will be allowed to register for certain courses, so read carefully.
Texas Success Initiative Office The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-legislated program requiring some students to take an assessment test before enrolling.
Checking TSI Status You can check your TSI status by logging onto the Registration Information Sheet (RIS) at https:// utdirect.utexas.edu/registrar/ris.WBX. In the Advising Information section, look for the heading TSI Status. If it states, “Exempt or Complete,” you have met all TSI requirements. If it states, “Barred or Unknown,” you should contact the TSI Office to speak with the TSI Advisor. Some students are automatically exempted through SAT or ACT scores, TAKS or STARR scores, or a college transcript showing TSI exemption. Students who are not exempt need to take and pass the TSI Assessment before they will be able to register for courses at UT Austin. To learn more about TSI exemptions, visit utexas. edu/ugs/tsi/exemptions. At orientation, students who have not yet met TSI requirements will be asked to take the TSI Assessment on campus. You must have an in-person advising session with the TSI Advisor before taking the TSI Assessment. If you have already taken the TSI Assessment, it is your responsibility to submit your test scores to the TSI Office.
TSI Assessment Registration Procedure • If it is determined that you need to take the TSI Assessment, the TSI Advisor will register you for the test during your in-person advising session. • Prior to taking the TSI Assessment, every student is required to complete the Pre-Assessment Activity in order to prepare for the test. The TSI Advisor will provide you with a link to the Pre-Assessment Activity. • The total cost of the TSI Assessment is $40—$20 for the exam plus a $20 non-refundable registration fee. The $40 will be billed to your What I Owe Account. • An online information guide and sample questions for the TSI Assessment are available at utexas. edu/ugs/tsi/tests/TSI-Assessment-Preparation. • Students with scores below the minimum standards will be required to enroll in one or more developmental instruction courses during each subsequent semester of enrollment until they complete their TSI requirements in all three areas. For more information or to verify your TSI status, please contact the Texas Success Initiative Office at tsi@austin.utexas.edu, 512-232-7146, or online at utexas.edu/ugs/tsi. Spring Orientation 15
Center for Teaching and Learning Student Testing Services (STS) within the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides opportunities for students to take tests for placement and credit. Taking tests for credit is called credit by exam, which means that students may “test out” of college courses. Such credit will satisfy degree requirements in the same way as credit earned by passing a course, but will not count as credit earned in residence. Although students may take tests before they enroll at UT Austin, they must be currently or previously enrolled in order to receive credit. Unsuccessful attempts to earn credit by examination will not become part of an official transcript. On your transcript, the course will appear not with a grade but with the symbol “CR.” If you are transferring credit from another college, you should consider test requirements based on the course credit you are transferring. For example, if you transfer credit for a course that is equivalent to UT Austin’s RHE 306, then you will not register for RHE 306. You are responsible for determining your eligibility to take a particular test and for identifying tests required of you. You cannot earn credit by examination for a course (or its equivalent) in which you already have a passing or failing grade. The results of tests taken Jan. 12–13 will be available in time for the registration periods for all new, readmitted, and continuing students. Results of tests taken during the first week of classes will be available in time for the official add/drop/late registration period.
Deciding Which Tests to Take • If you do not plan to register for a course with a test prerequisite, you need not take that test, unless you want to try to earn credit by examination for that course. • Prior AP, IB or other testing (as well as transfer work) often makes further testing for the same subject unnecessary. • Since degree plans differ across colleges and schools at UT Austin, often it is necessary to speak with an academic advisor prior to determining which tests are helpful (if any) to take. If you are uncertain about whether or not you need to take a test, you may also talk with a CTL/STS staff member at the Test Information Session, or during the school year. Read the “Selected Tests for Course Placement and Credit” section below for more information on which tests may be required of you.
Selected Tests for Course Placement and Credit ALEKS Most entry-level mathematics and statistics courses have as a prerequisite a minimum score on the ALEKS Web-based placement exam in mathematics. Course prerequisites are given in the Undergraduate Catalog. Information on ALEKS score requirements for particular mathematics and statistics courses are available from the Department of Mathematics and the Division of Statistics and Scientific Computation, or online at cns.utexas.edu/academics/placement/math-assessment. You can also contact the Math Advising Office at 512-461-0900 for more information on the ALEKS math test.
16 New Student Services
SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Students whose program allows credit for Math 305G, a pre-calculus course, may take the SAT Subject test in Mathematics Level 1 or Level 2 to earn credit. Students may take the test twice on the UT Austin campus. Students who already have a passing or failing grade, or a grade symbol of CR or X for M 305G (or its equivalent) and students who have completed a college calculus course with a grade of at least a C before taking the Math Level 1 test are not eligible for credit by examination in M 305G. Consult with your academic advisor before enrolling in a calculus course. If you are uncertain about your eligibility, you may consult CTL/STS by phone at 512-232-2662 or by email at ctl-testing@utlists.utexas.edu. The Math Level 1 test requires the use of a scientific or graphing calculator. Calculators will not be provided; you must take one with you to the test for your own use. Calculators may not be shared during the test. UT Austin Test for Credit in Chemistry 301 The UT Austin test for credit in Chemistry 301 is recommended for engineering majors (with the exception of electrical and computer engineering majors) and physics majors who have studied chemistry in high school and who do not have credit for CH 301 or its equivalent. Information about the chemistry test, including eligibility requirements and sample questions, is available at ctl.utexas.edu/ testing and from the CTL office. Foreign Languages Students with knowledge of a foreign language, however acquired, are strongly encouraged to take a placement test before enrolling for the first time in a UT Austin course in that language. Students transferring college credit in most foreign languages are also strongly encouraged to take a placement test before enrolling in a UT Austin course in that language. For a complete list of tests used for language placement, visit ctl.utexas.edu/testing. Rhetoric and Writing Students with a score of 600 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test Writing Section, or a score of 26 or higher on the ACT Writing/English Section with a score of 26 or higher, can claim credit for RHE 306. In addition to an eligible score on the SAT Reasoning Test Writing Section, students may receive credit for RHE 306 through transfer credit for an English course equivalent to UT Austin’s RHE 306, or an eligible score (3–5) on the College Board AP Exam in English Language and Composition. College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) UT Austin uses scores from these eight CLEP subject examinations as the basis to award credit by examination. To register for any of these tests, visit the CTL/STS website at ctl.utexas.edu/testing. • American Government, plus UT Austin Test on Texas Government • American Literature with UT Austin essay required • Calculus • College Algebra

Testing Logistics Registering for the Tests You may register for a test online from the CTL/STS website at ctl.webhost.utexas.edu/treg/index.cfm. After registering, you can return to the CTL/STS website to check, change or cancel your registration status. You MUST upgrade your EID during orientation before taking any tests for placement or credit. If you want to take two tests, but both are scheduled at the same time, you must contact CTL/STS by January 2 to find an alternate time to administer one of your tests. Students with time conflicts of any other type, academic or nonacademic, must make their own choices or arrangements.
Test Fee Payment When you confirm your registration for a test you will be immediately billed a nonrefundable test registration fee of $20. The remainder of the test fee will be billed after you take the test. Payment is due within 14 days after the test administration. The CTL/STS website provides information on how to pay your test fees.
When to Arrive, What to Bring Arrive at the testing location at least 15 minutes before the time for which you registered. Bring a generally accepted form of identification that includes your photograph. Also, bring two sharpened No. 2 pencils to each test. If you are taking the Math Level 1 test, you will need to bring a scientific or graphing calculator. For most tests, you may not leave until everyone is dismissed.
Special Arrangements for Students with Disabilities If you require academic accommodations or assistance due to a documented disability, you should contact these two offices before registering for a test and at least five business days before the day of the test: • Services for Students with Disabilities, in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at ssd@austin.utexas.edu or (512) 471-6259 to seek approval for authorized accommodations; • CTL Student Testing Services at ctl-testing@utlists.utexas.edu or (512) 232-2662 to register and make arrangements to take the test.
Retaking Tests Because many tests can be taken only once* in the UT Austin on-campus testing program, you should give thought to the most appropriate time to take each test. Tests are offered at scheduled times before each registration period. A complete list of UT Austin tests and testing periods is available at ctl.utexas. edu/testing. *For information on which tests can be retaken, visit the test description page on the CTL website (ctl. utexas.edu/testing) or contact the Student Testing Services office.
Previously Taken Tests If you have taken any of the College Board (CB) SAT Subject Tests, Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Subject Examinations or International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations used by UT Austin, you should have the official report of your score(s) sent to UT Austin. The College Board score recipient number for UT Austin is 6772. If you have taken 18 New Student Services
an SAT Subject Test on a College Board nationwide test date, then you need not take it again on the UT Austin campus unless you want to try to earn a higher score or you have not received your score from the College Board. To make sure that scores are already on file for your previously taken tests, please visit your My Test Results web page at https://utdirect.utexas.edu/ctl/cbe/petition/index.WBX.
For More Information Website: ctl.utexas.edu/testing Email: ctl-testing@utlists.utexas.edu Phone: 512-232-2662 Office: 2616 Wichita Street (open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday)
Useful Information About Credit by Examination Challenging a course You may apply to take a test over the content of any UT Austin undergraduate course in an attempt to earn credit by examination for that course. If you wish to challenge a course for which no test is regularly offered, you can ask a CTL/STS staff member to explain the procedure.
Claiming placement and/or credit Students who have credit eligible test scores have the option of using the scores as a prerequisite for a course and can claim “placement only” or “credit only” for the course. Once a student claims credit, CTL/STS will report the credit to the Registrar’s Office and it will become part of the student’s official academic record. If a student wishes to use the test score as a prerequisite without claiming “credit only” the student may use the qualifying score as “placement only” to enroll in the sequent course after consulting with his/her academic advisor. In this case these courses do not appear on a student’s transcript. A student who uses the test score for placement can later petition for the course credit but once a test score has been used for course credit it cannot later be changed to placement only. No credit by examination will appear on your official transcript until you instruct CTL/STS to report it to the Registrar. To have credit reported, you must claim your credit by logging onto the CTL/STS website at ctl.utexas.edu/testing. The CTL/STS website gives a full explanation on how to petition and pay for credit. After credit has been reported to the Registrar, it cannot be changed. Although you may petition for placement or credit by examination immediately after you obtain your UT EID, your credit will not be officially recorded on your transcript until you begin attending classes at UT Austin. If you take a course for which you have earned credit by examination prior to petitioning for that specific course, you are no longer eligible for credit by examination in that course. You must petition for your credit by examination within 10 years from the test date. Petitioning for credit by examination that does not apply toward your degree plan may make you ineligible for a tuition rebate. See the General Information catalog for information on the university’s policy for a tuition rebate and consult with your academic advisor.
