Spring Orientation
2016
The Longhorn State of Mind is embodied in our university’s core values, but more than that, students should feel empowered to bring these values to life as part of their success at The University of Texas at Austin.
Core Values Individual Opportunity - Many options, diverse people and ideas, one university. Responsibility - To serve as a catalyst for positive change in Texas and beyond. Learning - A caring community, all of us students, helping one another grow. Discovery - Expanding knowledge and human understanding. Freedom - To seek the truth and express it. Leadership - The will to excel with integrity and the spirit that nothing is impossible.
Student Honor Code “As a student of The University of Texas at Austin, I shall abide by the core values of the University and uphold academic integrity.” The principles of the Student Honor Code are key to a Longhorn State of Mind. In abiding by its values, you promote an environment conducive to academic success. It is the responsibility of every Longhorn to both know and uphold the University’s expectations for conduct. Student Judicial Services (SJS) in the Office of the Dean of Students fosters a Longhorn State of Mind on campus through the resolution of academic integrity and conduct-related matters as well as educational outreach to students, faculty, and staff. Specific information about the University’s disciplinary process, related resources, as well as the University’s rules (described in Chapter 11 of the Institutional Rules on Student Services and Activities) can be found on the SJS website at deanofstudents.utexas.edu/sjs.

ORIENTATION OVERVIEW Getting the Most Out of Orientation 1. Find your way around. Take a campus tour, check out the map at the back of this guide or via the UT Austin app, and explore the Forty Acres on your own. This will make it much easier to find your classes this semester. 2. Plan out your schedule. Find out which programs are required—you can’t miss those! Make sure to take time to pick up your student ID card and upgrade your EID. Figure out which UTransform sessions works best for you (you’re required to attend one). Choose which Discover UT programs you’d like to attend. 3. Explore what UT has to offer. Choose one or two Discover UT programs that spark your interest. Browse through more than 1,100 student orgs on HornsLink.org. You can also use the list of phone numbers and websites in the back of your guide/in the UT Orientation app to find out more about a particular department or program. 4. Make a friend. Exchange information with people you meet at orientation programming. Knowing a few new faces will make the campus feel a lot smaller, and you may make a friend for life! 5. Have a plan. Before the end of orientation, have a plan for what you might want to accomplish in your time on campus. Time will pass more quickly than you expect, so the sooner you get started, the more you will get out of your time at UT Austin.

HELPFUL INFORMATION University Residence Halls University Residence Halls officially open at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2016. For more information, visit the Division of Housing and Food Service (DHFS) website at utexas.edu/student/housing. You can also email questions to housing@austin.utexas.edu or call 512-471-3136. DHFS office hours are Monday– Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Emergency Communications In the event of a residence hall or campus-wide emergency, the Division of Housing and Food Service and the university will use various methods to communicate with people on campus. In most incidents, emergency communication will provide instruction on Shelter in Place (take refuge where you are, away from windows, and wait for emergency instruction) or Emergency Evacuation. The campus siren system will activate to inform people that a dangerous situation exists. Verbal instructions will accompany the siren.
Student Parking Options Students who drive or park a vehicle on campus must purchase a permit from Parking and Transportation Services (PTS). Only Class D student permit holders may drive past the traffic control kiosks Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. A university parking permit must be displayed to park on campus. Purchase of a surface lot permit (C, D, M and N) does not assure a parking space in a specific lot. Purchase of a garage permit (R, S, N+) generally assures an unassigned parking space in the garage in which it is valid. Parking may be restricted in any garage or surface lot for special events. For current policies, fees, and regulations, including a detailed list of parking permits, visit the PTS website at utexas.edu/parking. You can also visit the PTS office on the first level of the Trinity Garage (1815 Trinity Street), or call 512-471-PARK (7275).
University Shuttle Bus Services UT students, faculty, and staff may use the shuttle bus service at no charge with a valid UT photo ID. Shuttle service is provided on all scheduled registration, class and final examination days. On most routes, service is not provided on holidays or on Saturdays that are not final examination days. Maps and schedules are available online at utexas.edu/parking/transportation/shuttle.
Student EID Upgrade and ID Card Upgrade your UT EID and obtain your official student ID Card during Spring Orientation. Report to the ID Center on the first floor of the Peter T. Flawn Academic Center (FAC), 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Monday–Friday, to upgrade your UT EID and take your ID photo.
ID Cards ID cards cost $10. This fee can be paid in person at the Cashier’s Office in the Main Building, or online at the What I Owe page on the Student Accounts Receivable site (utexas.edu/business/accounting/sar). Spring Orientation 2016 13
EID Upgrade Upgrading your UT EID confirms your identity to the university computer network and allows you to conduct electronic transactions that would normally require a legal signature. To upgrade your UT EID, visit the ID Center in person and present a valid, current government-issued ID. (High school ID cards are not valid.) You must also sign the EID Agreement which gives your UT EID legal signature authority. Valid forms of identification: • Driver’s license from the United States or Canada • Valid learner’s permit or temporary license (must include photograph) from the United States or Canada • U.S. Military ID • U.S. or foreign passport • Alien registration card with photo (INS form I-151 or I-551) • U.S. citizen ID card (INS form I-197) • Resident citizen card (INS form I-179) • U.S. Employment Authorization Card – EAD (form I-766) • Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card • Trusted Travelers Program (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) If you are under 18, you must do one of the following in order to upgrade your EID: 1. Visit the ID Center in the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) with your legal guardian to sign the Electronic Agreement Form. You and your guardian must both present a valid, non-expired, official government-issued photo ID. 2. If your legal guardian cannot be present at orientation, you can print the Electronic Agreement Form beforehand, have it notarized and bring it to orientation.

ALL ABOUT TESTING Texas Success Initiative Office The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. There are two components of the program: 1) an assessment to determine students’ basic skills in reading, mathematics and writing; and 2) developmental instruction to strengthen academic skills that need improvement. Before you can register for courses, you must prove you are TSI exempt or present passing scores from the TSI Assessment. To learn more about TSI exemptions, visit utexas.edu/ugs/tsi/exemptions.
How to Check Your TSI Status • Log onto the Registration Information Sheet (RIS) (https://utdirect.utexas.edu/registrar/ris.WBX). Scroll down to the Advising Information section and look for the heading “TSI Status.” If it states, “Exempt” or “Complete,” you have completed all of your TSI requirements, and there is no further action needed on your part. • If your TSI Status states, “Barred” or “Unknown,” you must contact the TSI Office and speak to the TSI academic advisor as soon as possible. If you have not yet met TSI requirements, you will be asked to take the TSI Assessment before you arrive at orientation.
Submitting TSI Scores If you have already taken the TSI Assessment, it is your responsibility to submit your test scores to the TSI Office. You can email or bring a hard copy of official test scores to the TSI Office. Students may also request that the institution at which they took the TSI Assessment “push” their TSI scores to the TSI Office. See below for contact information.
Test Administration • You should plan to take the TSI Assessment as soon as possible, before you arrive at orientation. Contact your high school counselor or local community college for information on registering for the assessment. If you need additional assistance, contact the TSI Office for help finding a testing center. • Before you take the TSI Assessment, state law requires that you complete the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA). It is available at utexas.edu/ugs/tsi/pre_assessment_activity. You will not be permitted to take the TSI Assessment without first completing the PAA. • If you do not take the TSI Assessment before orientation, the TSI Office will work with you to set up a time to test with Student Testing Services on campus. This will delay your class registration and require you to return to campus after orientation. Students with scores below the state–set standards will be required to enroll in one or more developmental education courses until they complete their TSI requirements in all three areas.
For more information: Texas Success Initiative Office | Carothers Residence Hall, Room 23 tsi@austin.utexas.edu | www.utexas.edu/ugs/tsi Tel: 512-232-7146 | Fax: 512-471-6464 Spring Orientation 2016 15
Credit by Exam Student Testing Services (STS) within the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides opportunities for students to earn credit by exam. Credit by exam means that students may “test out” of college courses.
Basic Guidelines • A student may not test out of courses (or their equivalents) in which the student already has a passing or a failing grade. • Credit by exam is not required. However, if you wish to begin studying a foreign language at a level beyond the entry-level course, you may need to take a placement test in order to do so. • Credit by exam is recommended for those students who have considerable skills in certain academic areas, and who wish to satisfy degree or other requirements with testing. • Students with credit-eligible Advanced Placement (AP), CLEP, SAT Subject Test, or International Baccalaureate (IB), test scores may find that they have already earned coursework credit at UT Austin by taking exams. Please see the STS website at ctl.utexas.edu/studenttesting for tests and scores that we accept.
Claiming Credits • Credit-eligible scores will not automatically be turned into coursework credit; students must first claim the credits online. Your course credit will not be recorded until after you have started classes at UT Austin. After you have begun attending classes at UT Austin, you may then petition at any time during your studies here (test scores are good for 10 years). The petitioning fee is $6 per credit hour. • If you don’t want credits you’ve earned by exam to appear on your transcript, but want to use a test score to place out of a course, you can use your test score to claim “placement only.” Once you’ve used a test score for placement, you can later petition for the course credit, but once a test score has been used for credit it cannot be changed to “placement only.” • You should always speak with an academic advisor who can help you make the best decision about if and when to claim credit. • For more information about claiming credit and placement, visit ctl.utexas.edu/studenttesting.
Reporting Test Scores If you have taken any SAT Subjects Tests or AP, CLEP or IB Exams, you should have the official report of your scores sent to UT Austin. The College Board score recipient number for UT Austin is 6882. To make sure that scores are already on file for your previously taken tests, visit ctl.utexas.edu/studenttesting and click on View Scores and Claim Credit.
Challenging a Course If you want to try to earn credit for a course, but UT Austin does not offer a standardized test that grants credit for it, you can challenge the course. If your departments approves it, you can take a test not offered by UT Austin in an attempt to earn credit for the course. You can speak with a CTL/STS staff member for more information on this procedure.
16 Spring Orientation 2016
Registering for Tests You may register for French, German and Spanish language placement tests when you register for your orientation session. For other placement tests, you can register online at https://utdirect.utexas.edu/ apps/ctl/regi/. There is a non-refundable test registration fee of $20, and the remainder of the test fee will be billed after you take the test. Payment is due within 14 days after the test administration. Information on how to pay your test fees may be found on the CTL/STS website. Many tests can only be taken once, so you should consider when the best time is to take each test. Tests are offered at scheduled times before each registration period.
On-Campus Testing The results of tests taken Jan. 11-12 will be available by the time you register for classes. If you take tests during the first week classes, those results will be available in time for the official add/drop/late registration period (see the Spring 2016 Course Schedule). Testing Protocol Bring a photo ID and two sharpened No. 2 pencils to each test. If you are taking the SAT Math Level 1 test, you will need to bring a scientific or graphing calculator. You should arrive at your test room at least 15 minutes early. For most tests, you may not leave until everyone is dismissed. Special Arrangements for Students with Disabilities If you require academic accommodations or assistance due to a documented disability, you should contact these two offices (before registering for a test) at least five business days before the day of the test: • Services for Students with Disabilities, in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at ssd@austin.utexas.edu or (512) 471-6259 to seek approval for authorized accommodations; • CTL Student Testing Services at ctl-testing@utlists.utexas.edu or (512) 232-2662 to register and make arrangements to take the test.

FAQs What should I submit with my application for VA Benefits? Eligible veterans and service members on active duty or in the reserves who have never received VA education benefits must complete an Application for VA Education Benefits, VA form 22-1990 (Dependents will fill out the 22-1990e), and provide a copy of their DD214/member 4 or Notice of Basic Eligibility form. Transfer students who have received VA education benefits at other institutions must complete a VA form 22-1995, Request for Change of Program or Place of Training.
I am currently a veteran, active duty military or a dependent using VA benefits. How can I qualify for in-state tuition? Veterans, active duty military (including active reserves and National Guard), or dependents using VA benefits may have their out-of-state tuition status waived to in-state tuition under the Texas Education Code. To receive the in-state tuition waiver, you will need to take a copy of your VA Certificate of Eligibility to the Residency Office at Walter Webb Hall. If you have any specific questions regarding residency, please call 512-475-7391 or email residency@austin.utexas.edu. The residency office is located within the Graduate & International Admissions Center in Walter-Webb Hall in the northwest area of campus. Office hours are weekdays from 8 a.m.– 5 p.m. Per new VA rules, beginning July of 2015, all residency waivers must be completed before you can by certified for your VA benefits.
How do I receive Hazlewood benefits? The Hazlewood Act currently provides qualified veterans, spouses, and children with tuition and fee exemptions for approved programs at state-supported colleges or universities. To use or transfer benefits, complete an application and submit it in person at the Student Veteran Services office or via email to the Office of the Registrar at hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu. The University of Texas at Austin determines eligibility based on compliance with state regulations.
Where can I find more information? More information for military personnel and veterans may be found by using the search term “military” on the Texas Higher Education Board website at CollegeforAllTexans.com, or by visiting the UT Austin Veterans Services website at deanofstudents.utexas.edu/veterans.
How does UT Austin determine which military education credits can count as college credit? UT Austin uses the American Council of Education (ACE) guides to research course credit and awards all recommended credit at the upper division baccalaureate level. Credit is awarded after enrollment, in a manner similar to credit by exam.
