Traditions Bevo – UT Austin’s mascot, a Longhorn steer (NOT a cow), made his debut in 1916 at the Texas vs. Texas A&M Thanksgiving Day game (UT won, of course). A writer referred to him as Bevo, but exactly how his name came to be remains a mystery. Hook 'em Horns – Our iconic hand sign was invented in 1955 by head cheerleader Harley Clark. In case you didn’t realize, it’s supposed to look like Bevo’s horns. range and White – The colors first appeared at a baseball game in O 1885, but they weren’t official, and if you went to a football game in 1899 you would have seen a rainbow of yellows, oranges, whites, reds, maroons, and blues. In 1900 the university voted and orange and white became the official colors. The Tower – At 307 feet, the Tower towers over the campus landscape. It opened in 1937, and it’s also known as the Main Building. When the Tower is lit up orange for special occasions like sports victories, it’s pretty much the coolest thing ever.
Did you know… The university’s first mascot was a dog. Named Pig. The Texas state flag you’ll see at every home football game is the largest state flag in the world. The Longhorn Band’s enormous drum, Big Bertha, weighs more than 500 pounds. The 56 bells in the Tower are called the Kniker Carillon. Listen closely and you might hear anything from the “Stars Wars” theme to “Happy Birthday!” 12

What is Canvas? Canvas is an online class management system that many professors choose to use. It allows you to get to the class syllabus, announcements, homework, message board, class list and grades. Sign in through MyUT using your UT EID and password: đ&#x;”— canvas.utexas.edu, my.utexas.edu
Tips for Canvas Success 1. Download the app Canvas has apps for most popular mobile devices — it’s a great way to keep up with your classes on the go!
2. Set up notifications
“ The first time a professor said, ‘It’s on Canvas.’ I was like, huh? I had no idea what she was talking about. 34
Make sure you’re notified of messages, announcements and updates to assignments. Find this by clicking on the “Settings button on the Canvas homepage.
3. Connect with group members Need to work with others in your classes? Click on “Collaborations (on the left-hand menu of your course page) to start a Google Doc with your classmates. No need to find everyone’s Gmail address — just click on their name to add them to the Doc!
4. Stay on track using “Calendar and “Grades Click on “Calendar (at the top of the Canvas homepage) to see upcoming assignments and events, and click on “Grades (also at the top of the page) to see grades for all your classes. Things only show up here after professors enter them into Canvas, so don’t panic if something’s not immediately visible. 35
“ Professors aren’t as scary as they seem. You can talk to them. “Read up about who your professors are before you sign up for the class. “It helps to talk with your professor before as opposed to after something has already happened. Be proactive.
“ Always be professional when dealing with professors, even in emails.

“ The first day, I didn’t know that you don’t take all your books to class. I had this giant heavy backpack.”
“Use e-books. There are plenty of online sources for cheaper digital copies of textbooks.”
“Purchase books from upperclassmen. Join a Facebook page for your major; upperclassmen usually sell their books on there.”
“ Don’t buy books, rent them. It’s much cheaper!” “Try looking for books online.”
“Textbooks are EXPENSIVE. Budget for them!” “ Wait until the first week of school to see if you NEED all of the books on the list. I had two classes last year where I bought the books and never needed them because the professor provided other material.”
38
