Graduate, Applied Microbiology As a child in war-torn Sudan, Yak stumbled across his first lesson – from a man sitting under a tree teaching the alphabet. Yak’s desire for education led him on a six-week trek to study at a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to UTSC on a World University Service of Canada (WUSC) scholarship to study applied microbiology. His volunteer work with campus groups, including the IMANI high school mentorship program, and helping other WUSC students adjust to life at UTSC, earned Yak a UTSC Letter Award.
