now let’s play harder. So we’ve traveled to places we have never been, made amazing friends along the way, and embraced the memories that we created in the last two years. There was a lot of blood, sweat, tears, many sleepless nights, happiness, and endless laughter that made it all worth it because of YOU, our loyal readers. To be utterly engaged to doing what we love to do for you has been life changing. Here’s to many more years of an incredible journey together!
Having a destination wedding has always been a dream of Lucia and many brides. But with the charm of traveling to a faraway land, destination weddings can often feel foreign to your guests. In this issue, we explore ways to bring “home” to a destination. And when traveling isn’t an option, a wedding can still transport its guests to a special place by the way it’s styled. Brides are also getting more creative with a non-typical destination wedding, infusing it with modern design

hotel you are working with. In most cases, they will be familiar with the local vendors, as well as trustworthy vendors they have worked with, hopefully successfully, in the past. If the vendors don’t have a website, feel free to ask them to send you photos. Make sure to do the bulk of your research at home before visiting the location; this will help drastically narrow your search and will ensure that you don’t waste your time with unnecessary meetings. The internet will allow you to reach out to couples who have previously used your prospective vendors. Hopefully they will provide you with experiential input while expressing their satisfaction (or lack thereof) with the product or service in which you are inquiring. Lastly, once you secure a vendor you can trust, ask them for any reliable recommendations.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION While conducting your site visit, your camera should be attached to your hip, or glued to your hand. If you see it, shoot it. Take pictures of everything and anything that could potentially be part of your wedding day. Location, flowers, possible centerpieces, china, dishes from the tasting, etc. This will assist in conducting executive decisions from home. No matter how much you love your floral arrangements, when information overload begins to overwhelm you, you will not remember what shade of purple you chose for your petals. Snap it!
PLAN A VISIT Your ideas will really come together once you are able to visualize the location. A site visit offers you the invaluable opportunity to ensure that your ideas don’t just make sense on paper but are able to actually come to life. Plan a visit to inspect and survey your property. Also, establish some peace of mind, by taking this opportunity to set up meetings with your potential vendors. Plan a walk through with your vendors to ensure that your layout and décor plans do not overlap and work well in context. Avoid surprises by contacting your florist and requesting sample set ups. In doing so, you will know what to expect when the big day arrives. Also, make sure you ask for samples of your linen choice, china, flatware, glassware, and your centerpieces. Finally, (and well worth the wait) set up a meeting and a proper tasting with the catering manager, to help finalize your menu.

FLORAL FOR ALL Once you have decided on a local floral vendor be sure to send them a large variety of sample photos. Helping the florist grasp the arrangement you are hoping for and your overall style. Again, do your research and find out what flowers are more easily accessible in your chosen destination. These flowers will incorporate the local florists (local is always better!), and will help you avoid extra shipping costs. Certain flowers are not available in

every part of the world. That usually makes them more expensive to ship, due to import taxes or even unavailable pending customs and the department of agriculture relations.

TASTE TEST During your site visit, set up a meet and greet (and eat!) with the executive chef, banquet chef, or catering manager to review food presentation, and of course, taste your top menu selections. Since food is such an integral aspect of the wedding festivities make sure that everything you taste does well to excite your taste buds! If you are not completely satisďŹ ed, through a constructive tone, talk to the chef about possible options. In most cases, they will appreciate your input and will be happy to amend the menu and ensure your happiness!

LIGHTS OUT! Lighting is often mistakenly overlooked while planning a destination wedding. The lighting alone can be a deďŹ ning aspect to any event. Make sure to meet with an audio/visual vendor, allowing you to exchange thoughts and ideas and to guarantee that they can indeed set the mood desired. You may want to bring photos as an example as well as request sample photos from them, to get a better feel for their repertoire. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then you want to be left speechless!

Vanessa has always been a huge admirer of Pop Art and a great fan of David Hockney’s cool pool paintings and Warhol’s chic portraits. Thus she brought in Pop Art through pastel graphics on the stationery and on the patterned aqua linen.

Destination weddings are always a lovely opportunity to combine the excitement of a wedding with the relaxation of a vacation. Utilize ideas that can easily be packed in a suitcase for airplane travel. Pick flowers onsite for the bouquets and boutonniere. Poles found at the resort contributed to the carefree ceremony decor with the simple addition of a festive red fringe. Tequila shots greeted guests at their place cards, while Zoetry’s sommelier provided a variety of tequilas for an impromptu tequila tasting. Mini bottles of boutique tequila varieties, along with shot glasses and a lime were used as favors.

THE PROPOSAL In the middle of Beringer Vineyards’ courtyard, Cecile stood beside her friends, her eyes glued to her camera as she scanned the pictures she’d taken on her business trip through Napa Valley. She didn’t see her friends creep away, she didn’t watch Darryl approach — Cecile didn’t know what was happening until she looked up and saw her boyfriend had dropped to one knee.

THE CEREMONY Cecile and Darryl took advantage of Maui’s natural beauty by holding their ceremony where the Olowalu Plantation House grounds meet the ocean. “The venue was literally something out of a movie,” said Cecile, who described “the waves crashing, the sound of the ocean, and the beautiful picturesque sunset” as sensations that will linger in the memories of the couple and their 70 guests. Cecile and Darryl exchanged vows beneath a bamboo arch draped in white fabric and tuberose garland. “With all the beautiful things around us, there was definitely nothing more beautiful than what was right in front of me,” Darryl said. “It was as if everything just faded to the background.” U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

For a pop of color against their taupe taffeta gowns, bridesmaids carried bright yellow mono-botanical bouquets of button mums, calla lilies, ranunculus and daisies, while the groomsmen donned coordinating blooms on their slate-colored suits. Cecile wore an organza gown with swaths of fabric that fell like “waves in the ocean, which fit Hawai'i very well, she said.

THE RECEPTION Cocktail hour began with custom concoctions named for the couple—Phan-tastic and Deezylicious—and the couple’s signature cocktail, a mixture of St-Germaine elderflower liquor and Champagne. Guests sipped their drinks and noshed on shrimp and chicken skewers while listening to tune taken from Darryl’s iPod. Later, a local DJ enlivened the atmosphere. “Literally everyone was on the dance floor having an awesome time until the last moment,” Cecile said. “I was nervous about it because who really dances at weddings? I think the open bar helped.”

Escort cards were tucked into beds of wheat grass, and tables were marked by do-it-yourself painted wooden numbers glued to the colorful paper background of a simple white frame. Tables were dressed in white and gray, and topped with alternating centerpieces of boxed wheat grass and cymbidium orchids arranged above moss-covered river rocks. The station-style buffet dinner was “the best wedding food we’ve ever had,” Cecile said, and included fresh seafood served with mango relish and pineapple-mint salsa, Asian delicacies and marinated Maui vegetables. But the surprise of the evening, Cecile said, was Hawaiian shaved ice. “It was a hit,” she said, remembering guests who clamored for the coconut-, mango-, salted plumor berry-flavored treat.

JENNIFER & KENTON {11-25-10 | SAYULITA, MEXICO}
Jennifer and Kenton wanted a destination wedding that riffed off their home’s shabby chic and vintage décor, and enchanted guests with Mexico’s colorful traditions without getting too tacky. It was a challenge for event designer Mishka Aznoe de Morales, who said, “Because another friend of theirs was also getting married in the same place just months before, it was super important that the wedding reflected Jennifer and Kenton but didn’t stray to the same Mexican elements their friend had used. Jennifer wanted the space to look completely different.”

{ THE PROPOSAL } Kenton — a bottle of tequila in each hand and a beer hat on his head — was headed for the door of a Sayulita bodega when Jennifer walked in. She took one look and said, “Nice hat. I have the same one,” Kenton said. “I never would have thought that my love for Guinness would lead to the love of my life.” The pair ran into each other again in that small Mexican city, first at a local bar and then at the wedding they were both there to attend. At the end of their short trip, Kenton knew he didn’t want that to be the last he saw of Jennifer. “So the day I got back to Portland, I booked my flight for New York to see her the very next weekend. The rest,” he said, “is history.”

When Kenton dropped to one knee nearly four years later, it was a simple, set–in–stone decision to host the wedding in Sayulita, Jennifer said.

{ THE CEREMONY } For the ceremony, Mishka transformed the back of Don Pedro’s Palapa into a posh lounge that doubled as a cocktail parlor. Mishka anchored the large yard with a gazebo-like chuppah covered in flowers and foliage and entwined with trees to make it “look like it had been there for a while,” Mishka said. “It was really important to me that the chuppah looked like it belonged there, and not like we had just brought it in for the wedding.”

The chuppah was surrounded by Tiffany chairs and lounge furniture, “peppered with vintage–looking pillows in Jennifer and Kenton’s colors, as well as glass vases filled with flowers,” Mishka said. Minutes before Jennifer met Kenton under the chuppah, Mishka laid down vibrant pink rose petals, which Jennifer’s niece and flower girl topped off as she traipsed down the aisle.

{ THE RECEPTION } Lace–punched escort cards hung from doorknobs attached to a wooden frame, and led guests to tables named with vintage Mexican posters. Only one table broke the mold — a Guinness sign adorned Jennifer and Kenton’s table, to commemorate the couple’s unusual first meeting. Tables dressed in cream chiffon were covered by milk crates hand-crafted by Mishka. On the boxes, the names of Mexican milk companies were scrawled “Vintage doesn’t really exist in Mexico,” Mishka said. “People use up everything until it honestly becomes unusable, so vintage down here has to be created.” Each crate was filled with roses, ranunculus and lisianthus. “I wanted a vintage garden feel,” Mishka said, “like you had gone to the garden and picked the most beautiful buds to adorn the table.”

Between the crates were blue mason jars filled with candles — a detail the bride had insisted on and brought to Mexico herself. Mishka rebuilt the ceremony chuppah into a photo booth, hanging a two-person swing between its beams and leaving masks, glasses and hats behind. “Everyone loved the photo booth,” Jennifer said. “We also handed out hand-painted maracas for everyone to shake while dancing. Everything was perfect — the band was awesome, the ceremony was quiet, the speeches were heartwarming, the food was delicious and everyone seemed to have a blast.”

One highlight of the event was Silvi Alcivar of The Poetry Store, who created custom poems for attendees on her royal red typewriter. Shoppers enjoyed being a muse to a poet and her typewriter for a day (or a weekend for some). The poems were truly unique and touching – bringing tears to quite a few recipients.

Because Jacin knows that little things make all the difference, she started a side project called Jars of Love, where she sells jam and pickles that she cans herself to raise money for those in need. Jar by jar, she is helping. She first learned to can from her grandmother Hazel Page, known affectionately as Mimi, “the greatest canner who ever lived. Jacin has fond childhood memories of returning from visits with cans of strawberr y jam and bread and butter pickles. That memor y has turned into a love of canning today; she relishes going to the farmers market and getting fresh strawberries and cucumbers to can and then sharing her labors of love with friends and family. 122

When the son of one of her friends was diagnosed with an incurable disease and the family needed to raise money for plane tickets to a specialist, Jacin turned her hobby into a beautiful oppor tunity to help. She started selling her jars of strawberries and pickles rather than giving them away and Jars of Love took off from there. Since then, she’s raised money for victims in Japan, bought a wig for a cancer patient, and helped a friend with expenses for her premature baby. Sometimes she helps people she knows and other times she helps those who have approached her with a need. Even though her causes are always changing, her generosity and her belief that each jar can make a big difference remain the same.

Jacin has big hopes for her little giving tree. Right now, her ability to help others is limited by time and resources. She says that if other people with a love for canning would donate even just a few jars from their “canning har vest” they could reach out to so many more. But in the meantime, she is carr ying on her grandmother Mimi’s legacy and “spreading love, one jar at a time.”
