The first time Shannon and Mark met, they were acting as “wing men for their friends who previously met at bar. Little did they know that their good deed would pay off and they were the ones to hit it off instead. Later that night he offered to walk her to her car to fill the meter. It was then that she knew he was a good catch.

THE PROPOSAL Mark surprised her on a romantic trip to San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, CA. While on a walk after a day of horseback riding, Mark got down on one knee and proposed. “All I could do was cry! I was so happy,.” exclaimed Shannon.
THE VENUE Shannon had always dreamed of getting married in a barn setting, but their budget didn’t allow for it. Their desire to create her dream wedding with a little creativity led them to the next best thing – a location with ranch style homes and horses everywhere. What made it even better was that it was in the backyard of their close family friend in Rolling Hills, CA where she grew up.

THE BRIDE AND HER WEDDING GOWN She fell in love with the dress as soon as she saw it. The antique colored Ivy & Aster gown had rosette details that she absolutely adored. The rosettes were made of tulle that completely covered the entire gown. What made the gown even more special was that her mother made a silk sash to go with her gown. Her mother embroidered their wedding date in light blue on the inside of the sash. It meant so much to her.

THE CEREMONY Connie loved the natural, organic setting of the barn and wanted to showcase that in a more elegant and romantic way, without being too country. Throughout the planning process, they talked a lot about how they wanted to keep things simple and really showcase God’s love for them and their love for each other, rather than a fabulous spectacle they had created. Their colors were neutral with greys, ivories, muted peaches/pinks, sage greens, and accents of gold. They also incorporated a lot of wooden elements and plants to achieve that romantic yet organic look.

THE RECEPTION After the ceremony, 180 of their guests walked to their reception and were welcomed with live music by a bluegrass band called The Dustbowl Revival. Delicious appetizers such as mini lobster pot pies, caprese kabobs, tomato bisque and mini grilled cheese sandwiches, sliders with bleu cheese and caramelized onions, and coconut shrimp were served with their signature cocktail drink, John Daly – An Arnold Palmer with vodka. Their evening reception was like a special family get-together – simple, relaxed and intimate. There were hay bales covered in muslin all around and wine barrels turned over that were used for cocktail tables. CafÊ lights were strung up all over outside from the tree, through the tent and over the dance floor. They used dark wood tables covered with handmade table runners that had their initials M&S monogrammed by her mother, along with different colored hand-sewed napkins. Vintage plates with different designs and jars and bottles filled with various types of flowers and candles adorned the tables.

One of the most spectacular things about the reception was the 1000 paper origami cranes that Shannon’s parents had strung in a big eucalyptus tree. Folding 1000 cranes for someone at their wedding is a Japanese Tradition (Shannon’s mother is Japanese) that will bring 1000 years of happiness and prosperity to the couple. They were lovingly made by her parents, siblings, aunties, Mark’s mom, and some family friends. They were in different colors and patterns that looked beautiful among the café lights hanging from the tree.

The dinner was followed by dancing to all kinds of music from country to oldies to rock n’ roll. In addition to their two-tiered wedding cake, their guests also enjoyed an array of desserts by Cake Monkey that included mini chocolate lockets, mini peanut butter cakewich, inside out s’mores, and mini apple pop pies, among many others. Their guest left the wedding with a small mason jar filled with honey, tagged “Love is sweet”. They certainly felt the love after an amazing day of celebrating the marriage of Shannon & Mark! he Plaza Hotel in New York City was the perfect setting for sparkle, opulence and romance.
The bride dressed in a dramatically soft, ethereal Ines di Santo wedding gown was the right touch of romance in this fairy tale wedding. Modern, free-form florals of hydrangea, anemones, orchids, astilbe, bunny tail celosia, oak ivy and spirea branches enhanced the opulent linens. The simple but elaborately tall wedding cake was contrasted by the soft textures of the florals in pink, peach and cream, and the golden bronze tones of the sugar dĂŠcor.

I attended a coworker’s citizenship party. I brought my boyfriend-then and was introduced to Marc by the host. Marc was working the fancy indoor grill. He worked out a whole lot and was wearing a t-shirt where you could see his ripped chest and arms and I couldn’t stop staring at him whenever he was within view. He had the most
beautiful smile and he was so nice. I ended u p having a major (sec ret) c r ush on Marc since then.

Our “official” first date was when Marc took me out to a popular sushi restaurant and a movie. I was impressed that Marc liked sushi – especially since he seemed to be a picky eater. I didn’t want to order too much and look like a heffer, but I love to eat and was still hungry after a couple pieces of some safe generic rolls. Marc thought I really was content with the amount of food we ordered. Afterwards, instead of going to a movie theater, we decided to go to his place to watch a movie. On the way there, I was thinking this guy is trying to get fresh with me! But to my surprise and disappointment, all of his roommates came out to watch the movie with us. The movie could have been Finding Nemo, but I can’t remember because all I kept thinking was that I was on a date with Marc and his 3 other roommates. Sad to say, I left really late that evening without an offer to crash at his place (I lived 40 min. away) and not even a good night kiss. Smooth. Real smooth Marc.

KISS
We were at the Oracle parking lot where we both worked and it was at the end of a work day in November – a couple of weeks after our first date. Marc walked me to my car before leaving. To my sur p rise, he leaned in and kissed me goodbye. I was smitten. I later find out that Marc was super ner vous after the kiss. Marc is prone to allergies and his nose was dripping like a leaky faucet. He got paranoid and thought he got some snot on my lip when leaning in for a kiss and didn’t think he would hear from me again. Lucky him, I didn’t notice.

THE O NE
After she outlasted all of my previous relationships and I realized I wanted to be a better person by being with her.
A year prior, one of my best friends from childhood had passed away from a serious heart problem and it was going to be her one year anniversar y of her death. A bunch of our friends and her family were having a celebration of her life in the Central Coast, where I grew up. I had the flu and was terribly sick, but was intent on tr ying to make it down to be there for our friends and her family. Although Marc and I had just started dating for a couple of months, he drove me down to Salinas, where my best friend used to live so she could take me down the second leg of the trip. It was a late rainy evening and Marc patiently chauffeured me to Salinas which was a two-hour trip, made sure I had sufficient water and medicines to keep my flu symptoms under control, and drove back up to the Bay Area by himself. He understood how much it meant for me to be home for my friend’s celebration of life party and it was then I knew how much he truly cared for me. It was also then, when I returned and was fully recovered, that I knew I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life.

A ROPOS THE P
L
I had a private table set up on a bluff at the Ritz Half Moon Bay. We had champagne while watching the sunset and a ser ver brought us a plate with the ring on it. When the plate and ring ar rived, I d ropped down to a knee and p roposed. Fortunately, hotels guests taking pictures of the sunset from their room snapped a picture of the proposal and sent it to us.
I had a feeling he was going to do it that night earlier during the week, because Marc told me he wanted to take me to Half Moon Bay for dinner and insisted on it when I tried to suggest going to the city to watch the Chinese New Year’s parade. But I tried to keep myself grounded, and told him to plan the entire weekend and surprise me. That Saturday couldn’t have been more beautiful and Marc knew it was going to be a nice day in HMB since he checked the weather on a daily basis that week. He also made arrangements with the hospitality folks at the Ritz to get a table set on the bluff with a perfect view of the sunset. The lady in the lobby greeted us and

directed us to the terrace to listen to the bagpipe player and watch the sunset. Marc and I found a seat and I wanted a glass of wine, but he told me to stay put while he checked on dinner reservations. Five minutes later he came back (with no wine) but told me there was a better view of the sunset around the corner. There, on the bluff, was a single little round table covered with white linen and two chairs. On the table was a little sign that said “reserved.” A waiter served us champagne and Marc toasted to making the right decisions. I sort of paused, waiting for him to finally do it, but he didn’t and we clinked glasses and I drank up. Marc started talking about our first date in HMB and how we joked about getting
married 2 years ago. The waiter arrived at the table with a covered silver platter and said the executive chef created a special appetizer for us and warned me that the platter was very hot. Before I knew it, Marc got down
on one knee and said that although we were joking about getting mar ried back then, he wanted to follow through on that p roposal and p ropose to me now. He uncovered the platter, popped open the box, and all I could say was, “Are y ou for real?” and stared at the bling. Marc waited for a while for my answer and I finally said, “Of course! Yes!” I cried, he cried. I gave him a little kiss and a hug and then all of a sudden we heard applause from the folks behind us in their hotel rooms. It was so surreal. It couldn’t have been more perfect. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A BRIDE SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT JEWELRY FOR HER WEDDING DAY?
When picking out jewelry for your wedding day, my advice would be to not just consider the dresses you and your bridesmaids are wearing, but look at all of the elements of your wedding. Your bridal jewelry is a way you can tie in all of the other beautiful elements of your big day, like your flowers or your venue. Getting married on a beach? Choose a piece from our feather collection to add a chic but carefree feel to your look. Using blush pink hydrangeas in your ceremony? Have your bridesmaids wear earrings incorporating Rose Quartz from our Color Bar™. The vast array of colors and silhouettes in our collection allows brides to truly be creative in the way they accessorize themselves and their bridal party.

In August 2009, we instantly fell for Carol Hannah when she was on Project Runway. When we saw her week after week we instantly knew that Carol was destined for something great and amazing. Her sense of style and design was always on our mind. So when Utterly Engaged found out she was debuting a bridal line, we've been dying to feature her in our magazine. Her collection is timeless and has an effortless beauty. Here in this interview, we learn a little bit about this amazing designer and her love for bridal. FULL NAME: Carol Hannah Whitfield (I go by Carol Hannah. Or CH. It's a crazy southern double) YEAR YOU LAUNCHED YOUR BRIDAL LINE : April 2010 EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Business and Marketing at the College of Charleston in South Carolina HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR PASSION FOR FASHION? BRIDAL? My mom taught me to sew when I was seven, and it quickly became an obsession for me. I started making wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses for my older sister's

friends in high school, and taught myself patternmaking and draping from library books. I was a scrawny, super awkward kid, and making myself clothes made me feel so much better. I love knowing that my work can have the same effect on others. There's a certain kind of magic in a wearing a dress that makes you feel amazing, and that's one of the reasons I love bridal! HOW DID YOU BUILD YOUR BRAND FROM THE GROUND UP? AFTER YOU DECIDED THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO, WHAT WERE THE FIRST STEPS YOU TOOK TO MAKE IT A REALITY? I worked my buns off! As glamorous as working in fashion may seem, it is a business at its core and requires a lot of planning, grunt work, late hours, and determination to build a brand from the ground up. The first step was a cohesive business and marketing plan. BEST MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Gosh, every day! It's pretty surreal how well the line has been received and how fast we are growing. Seeing my gowns in magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings or Brides or The Knot really never loses its excitement. The same goes for adding new retailers (56 and counting!)

WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU DO TO START PLANNING A BRIDAL COLLECTION? DO YOU HAVE A CERTAIN TYPE OF BRIDE IN MIND? I usually first decide on the general concept and story, then move on to sketching and sourcing textiles. I drape and sew each of the new samples myself, and each gown tends to evolve and lead into the next idea as I drape. We try to offer a broad range of gowns in each collection, so there are definitely specific types of brides in mind for each piece - sweet and romantic, sensual and sophisticated, boho and whimsical, etc. but all within the umbrella of our aesthetic. DID YOU HAVE A MUSE FOR YOUR CURRENT BRIDAL COLLECTION? AND HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED? Last year I read every work by Fitzgerald, and I was left with the image of these lush summer garden parties thrown by the characters. All of his characters are a little crazy, but they know how to party! There's a bit of 20's influence, but not in a literal or costume-y way. I never have a problem staying inspired- the opposite rather! I feel like there's a constant conflict between number of ideas versus time to make them. Narrowing down ideas to focus on a concept for a collection can be hard sometimes, but it seems to get easier. You start to realize that you don't have to use every idea you have all at once, right at this moment! There's a creative drive that is impossible to turn off. IF YOU WERE TO GET MARRIED ( OR AGAIN), WHICH FROM YOUR BRIDAL COLLECTION WOULD YOU WEAR? My favorite gown changes everyday it seems! Today I am in love with Pemberley.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A BRIDE SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT GOWN FOR HER WEDDING DAY? Have fun with it! This is such a great opportunity to really go for it style-wise. It's best to limit the number of people you bring with you to one or two trusted friends/ family members. Too many opinions can be overwhelming and confusing. Sometimes it is helpful to come to your first appointment solo and then bring your entourage in to view the finalists at another appointment. Set your budget. Nothing's worse than falling in love with something you can't have, so we find it's best to keep budget in mind when making your selections to try on. If you're trying on gowns for the first time ever, keep an open mind and try on an assortment of different silhouettes and styles. You might be surprised by what you respond to, and listen to your consultant's suggestions. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

learn from another era. Especially traditions that were made for a reason and has been kept for hundreds of years because it serves a purpose. Like a handwritten note, sharing a meal with your loved ones, and welcoming guests into your home with the intention to have them feel comfortable. It's because it breathes authenticity. The stylist, Melody Davis of MG Davis Events and her team, created this editorial shoot with such intention. From the locally grown cherry blossoms to the timeless beauty and fashion of the Gatsby Era. Remember, it's in the intention and the authencity that beauty and love reigns.

Caroline Tran, an amazing Southern California wedding photographer, combined her love of teaching and photography and started a workshop called “Propel”.
She says, “I
was a high school Physics teacher before becoming a full time photographer. Though there are many reasons why I chose photography, there are also many things I miss about teaching. I especially miss the mentoring aspects of teaching I love sharing knowledge and I love helping people reach their full potential. I am so grateful for having the opportunity to teach again.” 86

Propel focuses on helping its participants build a sustainable business, and establishing your style when you shoot. It covers topics anywhere from marketing and branding to workflow. Caroline walks them through on how she approaches a shoot, and then gives them time to practice. Propel teams up with creative vendors to pull together a couple beautifully-styled shoots for participants to practice what they’ve learned in the classroom.

So when Caroline invited Utterly Engaged Magazine to be a part of this amazing opportunity, we jumped on board. We came in as editors of a magazine to share the ins and outs of putting an editorial shoot together. We teamed up with Nancy Park of So Happi Together to create this amazing shoot. The mock wedding Nancy produced was inspired by the idea of taking Caroline's students out of their element, "the city", and into the "safari" of learning the nuts and bolts of photographing for editorial. And with a lot of our editorial articles, our concepts start with a story.

CAROLINE, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO PROPEL? AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME PROPEL?
A few years ago, I got an email asking if I was going to have a workshop. I was flattered but said no because I wasn't sure what I even had to offer. As more emails like this came in, I started to entertain the idea because as a former high school Physics teacher, I really missed being a mentor. I knew that if I was to have one, it had to be purposeful, based on my strengths, with a clear objective. One area I was successful at was growing my business in a short amount of time. I started to think about what contributed to my fast growth and it came down to finding my voice as an artist, and having a sustainable business plan. I wanted to help other photographers leverage their strengths to take their business to the next level... to Propel. 94

HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE TEACHING PROPEL AFFECTED YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHY?
Teaching Propel makes me reflect on my business, and reminds me to practice what I preach. I've cleaned up my marketing materials and presentation/packaging since starting Propel. Teaching Propel has also made me more aware of my thought process and metacognition while I shoot. I continue to challenge myself to break down the steps so that I can articulate this to others. SINCE YOU WERE ONCE A TEACHER, WHAT IS ONE HOMEWORK THAT EACH PHOTOGRAPHER SHOULD DO TO GET BETTER?
Self reflection is a crucial step in growth. Take some time after each shoot to think about what went well and what could be improved. Think about the things you specifically did to make things go well so that you can repeat this success. For the areas of improvement, think about what you can do next time. These areas can include pricing, directing, exposure, and omposition to name a few. Then push yourself by setting a personal goal/challenge for the next shoot. Practicing self reflections is how I grew from shoot to shoot. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU'D LIKE YOUR ATTENDEES TO LEARN FROM PROPEL?
I want them to walk away with the tools they need to succeed so that they are able to continuously improve and grow their business. 110 | I S S U E No. 024

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION? Love, relationships, and people inspire me. I’ve grown up innately interested in other people and how they live their lives, and through photography, I’m able to learn more about others and create new relationships. There are so many beautiful things in life, and being able to utilize my creativity within the context of someone’s wedding is a great way to show my appreciation for love. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love being a key participant in such a momentous occasion within someone’s life. It’s such an honor (and a great responsibility) to document the love that two people have for each other. I love going through the process with my couples, and by the time that we get to their wedding day, I’m there sobbing just as much as anyone else when they say “I do.”
TIP
Relax as much as possible, and let the day happen for you. You have put so much work into it the past year, and now it’s your time to experience the day.
