How long have you been in business? Since May 2008.
What was your inspiration for opening this business? We love anything and everything that has to do with tasteful color combinations and modern prints, since that was lacking in the backdrop world within the photography industry, we decided to marry the two and drop it MODERN came into existence.
What keeps your customers coming back? I would say it’s a combination of our cutting edge California style mixed with awesome customer service. We have a great team here at drop it MODERN who listens to what our customers are digging. We have the business set up to where we can test the waters with our Facebook community before we go into production, and we really value the feedback we get via social media. And we are constantly keeping up with the fashion and décor world to put out fresh, modern prints. We do like to be the trendsetters in this business. I think we have become the “go-to” for that in the backdrop world.
What can people expect to experience when they visit your site? Colors, prints and happy photos that will make you smile. We service a wide range of genres in the photography industry and we do our best to accommodate each one. But you will definitely get a colorful, fresh feel when surfing our site. We will always stay true to our modern California style.

Who are your target customers? Photographers, young and old, and modern thinkers with swag home décor who dig our fabric for home use (Think dwell and ELLE décor magazine subscribers).
What sets you apart from other sites offering photo backdrops? Everything. It used to be an understated rule in the photography industry to keep the backdrop subtle and without patterns and prints, so as not to distract from the subject. Well, we completely broke that rule and are totally rockin the printed/colorful backdrop. I think that’s what really sets us apart. Also, we were able to reach to a younger demographic of photographers who never before shot with backdrops to start using backdrops because they were attracted 8

What are your future plans for drop it Modern? Lots and lots more backdrops... and breaking into the home décor world is a dream of mine.
What are you most proud of? My team and how far we have come together. I started this business out of my garage and now the business operates out of our large California warehouse space, producing all our backdrops inhouse. And I can’t forget the lovable, efficient and hard-working team that keeps drop it MODERN running! For them, I am so grateful. Together they help me drive this business to expand and have awesome customer service.
There are so many cool backdrop patterns! Which ones are your favorites or the customers’ favorites? Customers favorite: Spangled. Hands down. And any of the classic damask patterns. My favorites: All of them, of course! But if I had to choose just one, I am totally digging all our ombre backdrops we just released as a part of the new “Metallic painted line”. we have some glitter in the very near future that I am totally excited about right now too.
Do you have any words of advice for couples looking for a photo backdrop for their wedding? What other creative ways can they use your backdrops? To couples looking for a backdrop for their wedding, pick your fave color and print that best suits you as a couple! I say always go with your first instinct on that one. And other ways our backdrops can be used include curtains, pillows, table cloths, table runners, the possibilities are endless! U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

the design They wanted a wedding that was elegant and natural. The low-key elegance of the Montage, Laguna Beach was what drew Nick & Melissa. A lot of their guests were traveling afar so the idyllic California view was perfect to celebrate their wedding day.
They used a lot of green in the florals, with pops of white, buttercup, and blush. The bridal party wore a spectrum of greys. And the bride wore a Monique Lhuillier gown that was ethereal and dreamy with vintage elements. Her bouquet was an "overgrown garden" that was loose and organic. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

the reception Guests were welcomed with a French 75 cocktails and a string quartet that played everything from Stevie Wonder to Guns N' Roses. Even though their reception was indoors in a ballroom, they wanted to give it the outdoor Italian piazza feeling. They dressed the chandeliers with leaves and flowers and strung bistro lights between them. The result was magical - green with romantic lowlighting. Guests danced the night away. Two days later they escaped to Hawaii to celebrate their new lives as Mr. and Mrs.

Designs throws a party for her team. Her team consists of eleven lively, passionate, diverse and driven women. Each year she pampers them a bit and makes them feel as loved as they make their couples-to-be-wed feel each day. Everything is styled, curated and carefully considered to wow them - something she looks forward to every year. This year Kristy was inspired by white, ivory and moments of green. Comfy upholstered seating, cable knit pillows, quilted throws and evergreen textures made it cozy and relaxing. Lunch was set within the glistening glass window panes of a centuries-old greenhouse. From these images it looked quite magical!

and a personal handwritten note from Kristy mounted on the back. And of course all of the handwritten lettering used throughout were from Kristy herself. It was indeed beautiful!
One of our favorite details is seeing the transitional color palette of greens and whites used with subtle details of comfort woven throughout, from fur pillows to a cable knit runner. Hanging baskets full of evergreen branches created a curious centerpiece above the length of the table.

How did Pearls with Purpose start ? In 2002, as I was searching for loose pearls for jewelry making, a hobby of mine at the time, I received a personal email from a 68-year old woman in the Philippines who stated, “If you import finished jewelry pieces from me, you will help women in my country. This began my growing interest in the women who’s behind the pearls and I became aware of the lack of adequate food, clothing, and basic necessities among the Filipino families, and set out to help. My first trip to Philippines in 2006 confirmed that these conditions were much worse and that I needed to do more. The products they were making needed to be moved quickly and in an effective way so that they had a consistent earning potential. We developed Pearls with Purpose Partners as the vehicle to move all the products that are created. This is done via websales, exhibitor trade shows and distributors.
W hat wa s you r insp irati on? My inspiration stems from being a mom. I strongly feel that no mother should have to choose between education and food. Every mom only desires the best for her child, regardless if she is American, Filipina or Indian. Being the mother of 5 children myself inspires me to work hard to ensure that all moms and children alike have the same opportunities that are afforded to my own children on a daily basis. It is through the PWP Foundation that these goals are fulfilled for these individuals overseas.

W h at m a d e yo u d ec i d e to d o what you do? I saw a need. Once an individual sees a need, they then own that responsibility to “do”, so I just decided to “do”.
W h at m a d e yo u wa n t t o g i v e back? I think giving back has always been in my nature. I was raised by parents who were always seeking opportunities to serve others. And as I reflect on my own life and upbringing, I’ve always had my basics of life. As I got older, I became more aware that how I live in America is not necessarily how the rest of the world lives. My first exposure outside of middle class America was when I took a trip to Mexico 15 years ago to an area called Creel. I saw people living out of railway cars, young children hauling buckets of water, beggars in extreme circumstances, malnourished babies, and it was a truly humbling experience. I made a silent vow to myself that if the opportunity presented itself to me to truly make an impact on my fellowman, I would do everything in my power to fulfill it. And that was what happened in 2002. A woman sent an email with a ‘need’. She made me aware of living situations that were deplorable by American standards. She shared with me real stories of friends and people that she was interacting with on a daily basis that were raw and mind numbing. Women poisoning their children so they didn’t starve to death. Women giving their children away because they could not feed them. Children being placed in dumpsters. Men squandering all their earnings on drugs or alcohol, and then beating their wives. I knew there was a way to break this cycle of poverty. I knew I could make a difference. On some small scale, if I am at least willing to close my eyes, take a deep breath and plunge in, the actions I take will somehow have an impact for good on the life of others. 52 | I S S U E No. 025

HO W T H E Y M E T Anna and Mark met through their love of bikes. After moving back from San Francisco, Anna needed help with fixing her bike and her friend gave her Mark’s information since he knew everything there was about bikes. So a few emails and text messages later, they decided to go out on a date for the first time. He was visiting family in LA at the time, but managed to fly back the next day to meet her to go to a Shark’s game with her, and they’ve been together ever since. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

Five months into their relationship, they were lying in bed one morning and he turned to Anna and said he wanted to marry her, and she said yes. To make the proposal more official, he surprised her with a more formal proposal with his family, her family and their closest friends at their house. When she opened the front door, they were there to witness him going down on one knee and watch her ball like a baby. She was in her gym clothes, sweaty and smelly, totally caught off guard.

After she refused to even acknowledge a “poke (What can I say, I was an eHarmony rookie at this point) I had to get bold and reach out to her, which I must say is so much easier to do in cyberspace than in real life! After we communicated for awhile I knew I was interested in meeting and by some miracle she agreed. The first place I laid eyes on Thu was in a parking lot of all places, and I honestly thought she was more beautiful than photos even lead me to believe. And that smile told me just about everything I needed to know!

It was fun, unexpected, and unconventional. We met at a d riving range (I have NEVER golfed!), conversed for a ver y long time, had din ner and then ended u p at a diner (for more food!) to continue to get to know one another better. Well, a bit daring on my part. By now I knew Thu was no outdoorsy sporting enthusiast, but I also felt she wasn’t going to be so easily impressed by dinner and a movie so again I got a little bold and took her to a high tech interactive driving range called Top Golf where we had our own little table for food and drink right next to our tee box. Thu got to talk a lot, and I got to check out her swing! In the end things must have gone pretty well because we wound up at a Denny’s later for a second dinner. I was very proud of myself. Fun fact... to this day we have not been to a movie in a theater together nor do I think we ever will.

We were getting serious and talking about weight y issues together. I said to him, “Wow...we are talking about big ideas for the future and we haven’t even said I love you!” That’s when he turned to me and told me he loved me & I said the same and of course I c ried!!

Immediately reciprocated, thankfully! If you’ve ever wanted to tell someone you loved them not long after meeting then you know how hard it can be to decide on the right time and moment. That was me.
THE ONE Not necessarily quirks but qualities; his unconditional love, patience, and acce ptance of me. Our faith, our belief in mar riage is paramount, and our com mit ment to our relationshi p through thick or thin. Our similar dis position helps us ag ree on a lot of subjects within our relationshi p.
While we do enjoy many things together, we are still the classic example of the term opposites attract...indoors vs. outdoors, patient vs. temperamental, proactive vs. procrastinator, dirty vs. clean (although I’ll argue that I do clean up well) so as you may guess, there are many quirks that we encounter in each other on a daily basis. I love all of them, even the tough ones. Whether you ask me during a joyful moment or at the height of an argument I will tell you the same answer... Thu Doan and I were put on this earth to find each other, balance one another perfectly and navigate our way through life together while hopefully leaving the world behind us a better place

We were out to din ner, both of us not having the g reatest of all days. After din ner, we headed to a book store to relax & unwind. As we were settling into our comfy chairs to get lost in our periodicals & books, I noticed that he had gotten down on one knee in front of me. He then fli ps open a small box & p roposes to me!!!! He asked me if I would do him the honor and be his wife! I burst into tears with a muffled YES! I could n’t conceive it! I could n’t believe there was a beautiful, s parkly diamond ring on my finger from a man I absolutely love & ecstatic to know that I was going to s pend the rest of my life with him

I had the perfect plan to propose on the night of an art exhibit held to honor the memory of Thu’s dear friend Curt Frankenstein who had passed away the previous year. For me his surrealist approach at art was the perfect parallel to the equally surreal experience of getting to know and love Thu. Unfortunately there was one problem, the ring wasn’t ready! In fact it only missed the event by a mere hour or so which threw me into a tizzy. I don’t do tizzy’s. I’m the calm, rational one! And yet after I got the ring it was like a hot potato in my pocket. At every turn I was looking for the right moment, utterly flailing in a ball of stress I’d say. In the end all it took was for me to calm down. We were sitting in those impossible to find comfy chairs, tucked away fittingly in the art section of a book store when I finally decided to give it to her. I tried to be a bit clever. It didn’t work, but it didn’t matter.

DEAR RICH,
Meeting you was a positive, pivotal point in my life. I am so unbelievably lucky to have c rossed path s with you; you exceed my expectations as a part ner, as a friend, and as an ext raordinar y companion. Being with you makes life feel secure, comfortable, and pur poseful. I t r uly understand what a solid, loving relationshi p is because to absolutely love someone else, y ou must be selfless, forg iving, kind, and love them at their worst because in turn, the best bit of us makes life and our relationshi p untouchable.

e’re constantly inspired by trends that are happening in Fashion. Last February, New York Fashion Week happened and we were intrigued by some of the biggest trends that will be hitting the streets of LA and NY soon this Spring / Fall. Leather was a common theme on the runway. Alexander Wang, J. Mendel, Michael Kors and more. And it was all about swingy retro shift dresses and boxy jackets like tweed and houndstooth. Inspired from this, we put together a wedding style that incorporates leather and tweed. And to balance these masculine elements, we took another cue from an upcoming fashion trend – sheer – to soften the look. The style turns out to be a nostalgic, fun, and romantic wedding, that’s easily created and uniquely memorable.

Our first date we went out to dinner. We had an instant feeling that we have known each other for a long time and it was ver y comfortable. A couple that was near us asked how long we had been together and that they couldn't believe it was our first date which was pretty funny to us.

ROPO THE P
SAL
He planned to take me to Pacific Galleries to propose and let me pick out a ring but when he tried to take me there because he wanted "to buy me a present." I insisted that we go get new leashes for the dogs at PetSmart (We have his and hers toy poodles, a boy and a girl). I was thinking the whole time "Present? Better be a ring! Or I'm not wasting my time to drive all the way across town." So of course we went to PetSmart and Rich said to the dogs on the way there in the car, "Your mom must really love you guys a lot since she would rather go get you new leashes than let me get her a present." So the next day he couldn't wait any longer and proposed at our house and completely surprised me.
The plan was to get Lorin to go to a local antique mall and propose to her while having her pick out a ring. I tried on multiple occasions but one thing after the other came up. Finally, I decided I would just go for it at home and I proposed to her and after we drove straight to pick out the perfect ring at the antique store.

HONEYMOONS: NEW BEGINNINGS
Honeymoons are such an exciting time for couples! It is usually the first time they spend together as husband and wife, and it marks the beginning of their life together. That being said, the honeymoon is oftentimes a really tough part of the wedding planning process! With so many incredible places around the world, and so much information online, how can you ever decide where to go? I answered some questions that I am frequently asked that I hope will help when planning your honeymoon!
♼
Katie
.......................................................................................................................................................................................................... KATIE FREDERICK, a Northern California native, developed her love affair with travel during her study abroad in London. In 2009, Katie began Ever After Honeymoons, a travel planning service where she personally plans honeymoons for couples based on their individual interests and desires. To say she loves her job is an understatement; Katie is passionate about her work and does her best to create the perfect honeymoon customized to each individual couple. Between planning honeymoons, Katie continues to travel the world and seek out new destinations as oft en as she can. 158 | I S S U E No. 025
Q: W HAT SHOULD WE KEEP IN MIND BEFORE DECIDING WHERE TO GO ON OUR HONEYMOON? he first thing to consider is the weather. You certainly don’t want rain every day on A: T your honeymoon! Then talk about what your ideal day on your honeymoon would be like. Then pick a destination around that.
Q: I ’M EXCITED FOR OUR HONEYMOON AND HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT PLACES WE WANT TO CHECK OUT. CAN WE DO IT ALL OR SHOULD WE TRY TO NARROW IT DOWN? A: I always encourage couples to visit fewer destinations, and really enjoy each place they visit. Typically the time leading up to your wedding is very busy and scheduled. So your honeymoon is the perfect time to relax and unwind.
Q: W HAT IF MY FIANCE WANTS TO DO THINGS THAT I DON’T AND HE’S NOT INTO WHAT I WANT TO DO? WHAT CAN WE DO? lot of couples have this issue, and will send me a list of each of their separate A: A requests. Instead of focusing on your differences, think about your favorite things to do together. What would be your ideal weekend together? Do you love going on bike rides, or checking out new restaurants together, or going to museums? Build your honeymoon around what you like doing together, and comprise on a destination that you are both excited about.
Q: W HAT DO MOST COUPLES FORGET TO PACK FOR THEIR HONEYMOON THAT I SHOULD REMEMBER TO BRING? A: S ome couples will visit relaxing beach destinations, and will just pack beach clothes. Once they get there they might decide to do some adventure activities that they didn’t pack for. So look into the activities available in the destination you are going to ahead of time, and pack for anything you might decide to do.
Q: I WANT MY HONEYMOON TO GO ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY! IS THAT POS SIBLE? A: S orry to say, but no! Little things always go wrong – flight delays, getting lost walking around town, sun burns. Laugh it off and just enjoy this time with your new husband or wife!
Q: WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT FOR OUR HONEYMOON? A: This is really different for each couple! Talk about what is most important to you. Is it visiting a far away spot and having really unique new experiences together? Or is it having a big suite on a beautiful beach and being completely pampered? Or is exploring a big city and dining at the best restaurants in town? Talk about your priorities and budget accordingly.

Tips For Luminous Wedding Photographs
LIGHT is an essential element to beautiful wedding photographs. if you have your heart set on a sunset ceremony you should seriously consider taking photographs with your family & husband before you exchange vows.
TRUST. Your wedding photographer will undoubtably be with you more than anyone else on your wedding day. It is so important that you feel comfortable & trust the person making your wedding images. The more at ease you are, the more natural and flattering your photos will be.
POSING. The secret art to posing is to simply be yourself. if you feel shy look down and take a deep breath. If you need a suggestion, simply ask your photographer. Any "pose" is just a starting point, leading (hopefully) to a real unrehearsed moment.
TIME. Even the most seasoned photographers cannot do their best work without adequate time to capture all the elements of your wedding day. Be sure to communicate with your photographer when figuring out the timing of your day.
LOVE is beautiful. So, show your love. Laugh. Kiss. Enjoy every moment of your celebration. There is nothing more beautiful in life & in photographs than the presence of true love. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

Do's Of Wedding Dress Shopping With Designer
TAKE IT EASY… approach dress shopping with a sense of fun and adventure. If you walk into every salon with the intense pressure of finding “the one” it can become overwhelming. It may take some time, but you WILL find the gown. You found the groom, that’s the hard part!
BACKSTORY… it’s hard to take our eyes off a beautiful bride, and your guests will be watching you from ceremony to dancing. The dress should look beautiful from every angle, and I love a sensuous back detail.
STAY TRUE… and go with what you love. Choose details that resonate with you, and it won’t really matter what is “in”. Trends come and go, but if you truly love your dress, or a particular style or theme, then you will always look back on the day and your photos with that same joy.
INCORPORATE… some homemade touches, whether you do them yourself, or enlist the help of crafty or talented family and guests. Things made with love add another dimension that you will miss if the wedding is over-produced.
The one thing that absolutely EVERY bride needs is a one-of-a-kind groom who is
MADLY IN LOVE with her." 170

Tips For Creating Wedding Invitations With Designers
THERE ARE NO RULES. Today's bride is unique and the invitations should reflect the couple and their personal style.
THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX. For a recent couple who adored their dog, we hid tiny silhouettes of their dog on every element we designed. Another bride had her grandmother's lace veil, and we scanned the lace using it as a design element throughout the invitation suite.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO MIX‌ print methods. Gold foil details on a letterpress invitation can be quite stunning. Or if your budget doesn't allow for letterpressing the entire suite, flat print the rsvp sets to save on cost. We always tell brides to go all out on the invitation card itself if nothing else. It really makes an impact.
DON'T FORGET THE DETAILS. A belly band made of kraft paper or twine wrapped around the invitation suite, finished off with a tiny monogram tag can really tie everything together. A single swarovski crystal detail on a tiny envelope that holds your website information or even a custom stamp incorporating some of your design or monogram. Your guests will appreciate those fun details.
GO BEYOND THE INVITATION. It's always fun to carry your design throughout the event. From place cards, to menus, welcome notes for out of town guests, to favor tags, this is a great way to keep your design 176

Tips From A Floral Designer & Stylist
TRY TO FORAGE… whenever possible. Try to see what you can use from your mother's garden if she's an amazing gardener. Or incorporate fruit and vegetables to add another layer of texture and dimension to your arrangements and bouquets.
ASYMMETRY… is so beautiful. Create movement with ivy or branches to make a more wild cascading arrangement and bouquet. Jasmine also adds a nice loose element as a finishing touch. Poppies and Ranunculus have a nice bend in their stems which also lends a wildness to the mix.
CREATE INTEREST… by having your florist build a base of a few large, showy blooms like peonies or garden roses and then add variety and texture with berries, veronica, or queen anne's lace. Consider the sizes of your blooms.
SCOUR FLEA MARKETS… and yard sales for vintage bottles, depression era glass, or old tea tins. Find beauty in unexpected objects! Almost anything can be turned into a vessel for an arrangement!
EXPLORE THE VARIOUS SHADES… within a single hue when working with a color palette, Adding different values will keep the eye travelling and will make a more interesting effect overall. U T T E R LY E N G AG E D

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERTISE? My expertise is in fine art wedding and portrait photography. I'm good at seeing and capturing natural light, directing my clients to organic poses, and communicating with the couple to document a milestone in their lives. I also shoot analog film so it's nice to slow down and really think about the composition and what the image is portraying of every image I take instead of aimlessly clicking the shutter.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING IT? Since November of 2012, so almost half a year!
DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT. I could be at home answering e-mails or halfway across the world getting ready to capture an engaged couple in the vineyards in Italy. I love that everyday is an adventure and a chance to be inspired by all the beauty of my surroundings and by all the wonderful couples and people I am lucky enough to meet.
WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION? My work is inspired by the beauty and art of simplicity. My images are natural, simple, bright with romantic organic emotions. I am also inspired to create beautiful photographs by my innate desire to inspire others so they can have the inspiration to do the same.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? I find that my biggest accomplishments are the times that a client is swooning, eyes all wide open, and with a big smile on their face saying how much they love the moments, the lighting, and the emotions I have captured of their wedding. It feels amazing to be able to contribute to someone's most important milestone in their life. I also find it that I feel accomplished as an artist when a peer in my profession in photography or the art industry sends me a nice compliment of my work. I feel the love and recognition that inspire me to keep going full force. 218

WHAT IS YOUR WORST FEAR? I've grown up as a tomboy during my childhood in Czech Republic. Roaming the woods, climbing trees, and picking out worms in the dirt for fishing. So, I don't think I have a physical fear of anything. I think the emotional fears are the ones that terrify me the most, for example losing someone I love, but I aim to live my life with no fears and no regrets!
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD? Travel. Absorb all the beauty, art, culture and knowledge the world has to offer, and write about it and capture all of it on film. I would also start a nonprofit organization that incorporates and funds art programs in elementary and middle schools. Things such as painting, ceramics, drawing. I grew up with a lot of art influences because my stepparents/ caretakers were custodians at an art school. So I had the opportunity to study and take a lot of art classes that I believe have influenced me in my photography. I think if there was more art integrated and offered at school kids would grow up with a lot of creativity and with an appreciation for the arts, who knows, maybe one day become the greatest painter or photographer of our time! TIN G E F LORAL ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Ashley Beyer
| Salt Lake City, UT
www. tingefloral.com ashley@tingefloral.com
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERTISE? Arranging flowers, I feel most in my element when I'm surrounded by flowers. Flowers really are the focal point for the dĂŠcor at weddings and I feel lucky to be able to provide that element and create something unique for each couple.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING IT? I've been in business for about 6 months, but I've been around flowers for many years either working at flower shops or helping other florists in the area.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT. I'm currently working from home which can be difficult at times because my space is so limited. I'm looking forward to warmer weather so I can set up shop in the garage and really make a mess of things (the kitchen is literally a disaster after 5 minutes of me getting a flower shipment, thank goodness for a patient husband!).
WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION? My work is inspired by nature mostly. Ever since becoming a florist, it's amazing how much more I am attentive to the flowers and plants in my environment. I'm also inspired by anything in the creative industry. I truly believe all creative industries go hand in hand and we all inspire each other.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? My biggest accomplishment is starting Tinge. Too many people think a long time about starting a business and never do it. If there is any advice I could give those thinking about taking the business plunge, I say go for it! Even if it doesn't take off you never have to ask yourself what if. Doing what you love is the best thing you can do for yourself, it definitely has been for me.

WHAT IS YOUR WORST FEAR? I have too many fears to count. My husband does tell me to not let fear dictate my life, which is a motto for people like me to live by!
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD? Buy a house in the mountains and a studio in the city with the most perfect floor to ceiling windows! We're lucky in Salt Lake City to be so close to the mountains. I'd also travel all over with my husband Curtis, there is so much to be seen in this world.

WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY? I believe now more than ever that you should do what makes you feel alive and always remember what's most important in life.
