FROM THE EDITOR Off-Roading and Family…

July/August 2020 Edition

BY LANCE SCHWARTZ

F

or me, off-roading is a passion that has only grown stronger as I grow older. After graduating from college, I spent all of my free time either riding, racing, or wrenching on ATV’s. Although those were some of the most memorable times in my life, at that point I figured that’s as good as it was going to get. In 2004 my son Gavin was born, and in 2008 he was joined by his sister Lauren. Life for my wife and I got crazier with kids, but it somehow also got even better! In addition to countless sports and activities, both kids have been riding since they were three years old. Early on, it was always a priority for me to expose the kids to off-roading. With my kids being 12 and 15 now, they have progressed from simply coming along on the adventure, to actually helping create the content we publish. As we shot photos for our rock crawling shootout this issue, my daughter spent her first full day with a camera in her hands, shooting the action. With one of my trusty Nikon camera bodies and a monster 70-200mm (2.8) lens in her hands, the camera seemed almost as large as her! Although a bit anxious at first, once she got the hang of it, she absolutely NAILED a few of the shots you’ll see in that article. As family life goes, while editing I noticed we have a dozen shots where she accidentally stepped

8 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

into my shot or she got me in hers. Although those photos would never typically make a magazine shot, in this issue they stand as evidence of the most important thing in the world, which is spending quality time with your family! The next time you hit the trails, instead of leaving your crew at home, do yourself a favor and take them along. When it comes time to glance in your life’s rearview mirror, you’ll never regret the time you spent creating family adventures! Although 2020 has been a crazy year, there are positives if you choose to look below the surface. My local dealer, who normally stocks at least 50 new UTV’s and a plethora of ATV’s, has almost no inventory left. They literally sold nearly every unit they have in stock, and have many of the units in transit pre-sold. Even despite the craziness, they said it’s been one of the best years they’ve ever had. The local ATV trailer dealership told me the same thing! Families who have been forced to slow down, stay home, and social distance have figured out that offroading is one of the best ways to accomplish all of these things. We live in a crazy world. Count your blessings, create an adventure, and go experience it with the people you love. I hope to see you and your family on the trails someday!

few short years ago, if rock crawling in a UTV was your thing, you were stuck building one on your own. While scouring the web to source parts and bludgeoning your credit card seems like a great time, walking into a dealership and buying a purpose built crawler with a warranty is certainly less hassle. Both of these factory crawlers are excellent. But...each of them has their own unique personality and meets the needs of the crawler fans differently. 12 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

ENGINES

Both machines rock 1000cc class engines. The Polaris uses a 999cc, DOHC parallel twin ProStar power plant generating 110HP. The Can-Am utilizes a 976cc Rotax V-twin that outputs 100HP. Both twin cylinders utilize electronic fuel injection. The CanAm takes it a step further in automation by using their proprietary Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC). The Can-Am features both Eco and Sport modes, giving the pilot the opportunity to select the mode of choice via a dash mounted button.

TRANSMISSIONS

Both crawlers feature similar continuously variable transmissions (CVT). These belt driven transmissions perform well and are very easy to service when a new CVT belt is eventually needed. Over the years, both Can-Am and Polaris have increased the amount of intake and exhaust airflow to help keep the CVT belts cool. This contributes considerably to their lon14 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

gevity. Four wheel drive is handled a bit differently by each manufacturer. Polaris uses Xtreme Performance True On-Demand Close Ratio AWD/2WD with Enhanced Low Gear Throttle Driveability. With the flip of the 4wd switch, the Polaris is able to detect slippage and transfer power to the wheels requiring traction. It’s seamless and works really well! The CanAm uses a lockable front differential with exclusive Smart-Lok™ technology. If you get into a nasty situation, a toggle switch locks the front differential. As an alternative, Smart-Lok offers rock and trail modes to manage locking/unlocking the front differential automatically. Rock mode is more aggressive than trail mode, and each is designed for optimal performance in their own unique type of terrain.

SUSPENSIONS

The Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC uses an arched A-arm at all four corners. Hanging those arms are Fox 2.5 Podium shocks with QS3 compression

POLARIS RZR VS CAN-AM MAVERICK

adjustment. The Can-Am has 14.75” of travel at all four corners, offering plenty of travel while also offering up 15” of ground clearance. The Polaris RZR has arched dual a-arms up front with Walker Evans shocks that generate 16” of wheel travel. Out back, the Polaris opts for trailing arms with arched radius arms, providing 18” of rear travel. The long travel trailing arms hang a bit lower and limit the RZR to 14.5” of ground clearance. Both machines also feature Electric Power Steering (EPS). The Polaris uses an awesome cast aluminum 14” beadlock wheel wrapped with 30” Pro Armor Crawler XG tires. The Can-Am also uses 30” tires, but the Maxxis Liberty rubber is wrapped around 14” non-beadlock cast aluminum wheels.

DIMENSIONS

Dimensionally, these two machines are REALLY close to one another. Both are 64” wide, but at 122”, the Can-Am is 2” longer than the Polaris with an over-

all length of 120”. The Can-Am also has a slightly larger wheelbase, checking in at 90.6” compared to the RZR’s 90”. Bone stock with no aftermarket roof, each machine is exactly 74.25” tall. The Can-Am has a 20lb heavier dry weight than the Polaris, which weighs 1573lbs. It’s worth noting that the Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC has a standard hitch and a 1500lb tow capacity, which bests the RZR with no hitch and no tow rating.

INCLUDED ROCK CRAWLING ACCESSORIES Both the Can-Am and the Polaris use factory 4500lb winches. Both machines also utilize factory front bumpers, but the Can-Am is the only machine that comes with a standard rear bumper. Plenty of skid protection is present on both machines. The CanAm has a plethora of Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) skid plates, including on the rock sliders. The Polaris has some plastic skids and opts for steel rock sliders instead.

RIDE TIME

We’ll get right to the point...both of these machines are excellent rock crawlers and super fun on the trails. That being said, our time spent with each machine has given us a clearer picture of the areas in which they excel. The Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC worked really well in the rocks. The Smart-Lok makes short work of managing the front drive characteristics when 2wd isn’t sufficient. Low gear is fairly low, and teamed with the 30” Maxxis Liberty tires, it crawled well. The Maverick had the best skid protection of the two machines. The UHMW plastic rock sliders were especially appreciated. Visibility out of the 16 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Maverick is a little less than the RZR. On the flip side, the Maverick provides a tad better splash protection. On tight trails, even though the Maverick is a tad longer, it felt more dialed and more planted on the tight trails at speed. The Fox shocks were awesome! Even though on paper they have less travel, they were more comfortable at speed and after a long high-speed run, the temperature of the Fox shocks were significantly cooler than the RZR’s Walker Evans shocks. If I had to choose which machine I was going to take on an overlanding ride with highspeed, gnarly switchbacks, and some crawling, I’d choose the Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC. The Polaris RZR XP 1000 Trails and Rocks Edition

POLARIS RZR VS CAN-AM MAVERICK

is a stellar rock crawler. Of both machines, this one was a bit easier to crawl with. This is due to a few simple reasons. First, low gear is exceptionally low and the fuel mapping to control that slow-speed crawl is spot on. The visibility of the left front wheel from the drivers seat is outstanding. If you need to put that tire on a rock, you can do it with little effort. The gated shifter allows the transmission to be shifted from reverse to high/low and vice versa without accidentally getting stuck in park or neutral. On the trails, the RZR was good...just not quite as dialed as the Can-Am. While the Walker Evans shocks felt soft and offered great articulation in slow speed crawling, they tended to heat up and show signs of

fading after alot of high-speed action. At the end of the day, either the Polaris RZR XP 1000 Trails and Rocks Edition or the Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC would make a great all around trail machine and rock crawler. Foreseeing the amount of technology that has been engineered into these machines would never have crossed my mind a few years ago. I honestly think the DNA that you see in both of these purpose built trail and rock crawlers will evolve andl become more commonplace as time moves forward. Big tires, long travel, high comfort, and exceptional build quality are here to stay. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the UTV industry! UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 17

2021 HONDA TALON 1000R FOX LIVE VALVE

2021 HONDA TALON 1000R Fox Live Valve and Launch Mode STORY: CODY HOOPER PHOTOS: DREW RUIZ

H

onda fired a shot right into the heart of the sport UTV segment with the release of the Talon, and it has been a hot seller since it hit the market a couple years back. Big Red did not wait long before dropping the 4 seat Talon, and it was introduced with the availability of Fox Live Valve technology as well as a new Launch Control mode. Honda’s new 2021 model-year Talon 1000 two-seat models were then announced, updated with the same Fox Live Valve shocks and Launch Control.

Here’s the question- are the new features worth the extra cash to upgrade? UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 23

UTV REVIEW

Highlights: • Snappy DCT Transmission works well • Crisp throttle response, great engine note • Live Valve suspension adjustability • Launch control is a fun trick, but also useful • Factory window nets

24 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2021 HONDA TALON 1000R FOX LIVE VALVE

ENGINE

Honda rolled the Talon’s drivetrain right over into 2021, which is no surprise considering the model’s brevity in the marketplace. It still shines as a punchy powerhouse with a very high level of polish. The Talon’s 999cc parallel twin cylinder engine has DNA pulled directly from the dirtbike world, particularly in its cylinder head layout. Honda calls it Unicam, which is essentially a single overhead camshaft operating the valvetrain. The camshaft opens the intake valves directly via a cam-onbucket design, while the exhaust lobes of the camshaft operate forked rocker arms to open the exhaust valves. It allows Honda to maintain tight valvetrain control at high RPM with a significant savings in size and weight compared to a more traditional dual overhead cam setup. The Talon is rated around 105 horsepower in stock trim, but thanks to its clever drivetrain, it punches a bit above its weight.

TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN

The transmission in the Talon is every bit as high tech as the engine, if not more so. A dual clutch transmission has two clutches on the input side, as well as two parallel shafts that contain opposite gear ratios. When you have shaft 1 engaged, the transmission’s second shaft is already spinning and ready to take an upshift. The clutches swap duty, and a shift is made. Dual clutch transmissions are able to shortcut the process of physically changing gears, which means the shifts happen very quickly. The DCT in the Talon has selectable automatic shift modes (Normal and Sport), as well as fullmanual paddle shifting capability. In the hundreds of

miles we have logged in various Talon models, we have left it in Sport Auto more often than in full manual. The Talon does a fantastic job of keeping you right in the target RPM range, responding quickly to hard braking and abrupt throttle changes. The i4WD system in the Honda uses individual wheel speed sensors and a very smart computer to control traction at all four wheels. The system works freakishly well when all sensors and computers are working in harmony, but we have had firsthand experience with a bad sensor that left a Talon stuck in 2WD.

SUSPENSION

The 2021 Talon R is only listed with the Fox Live Valve option at the time I’m writing this, which is a $2,100 upgrade over the 2020 “base model” Talon R. For that $2,100, you get a Launch Control mode, color-matched frame and ROPS, and the almighty 2.5” Fox Podium Live Valve shock package. Don’t be fooled- this isn’t just a bolt-on upgrade to the Talon’s existing suspension. The Live Valve system hosts a myriad of sensors and its own brain, which Honda calls the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The IMU and electronic controls are made by Bosch. The Live Valve system can adjust the shock’s compression damping on each shock independently, automatically, and up to 200 times per second, according to Honda. The rest of the Talon R’s suspension system remains unchanged. Up front, dual A-arms produce 17.7 inches of travel. Out back, Honda’s “4+ Link” rear A-shaped trailing arm design allows a massive 20.1 inches of travel. It’s all really trick stuff, designed to limit bump steer and keep the Talon pointed straight throughout its travel. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 25

UTV REVIEW

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

Honda carries over the Maxxis MU9H tire here, which is based on the Coronado but tuned for Honda’s own specifications. The tire turns in well, but feels loose on hardpack and doesn’t give a lot of forward bite. Honda’s new Launch Control feature shows the limits of the stock tires’ traction quickly. The wheels are cast aluminum non-beadlocks. The Talon really responds well to taller tires, and we would recommend upgrading to a good set of 30” tires if you’re planning on using the Talon for desert duty. The Honda’s brakes are strong, with a long pedal.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The 2021 Talon’s interior and exterior are unchanged except for the color schemes. The 2021 Talon 1000R is only available in “Metallic Grey”, which doesn’t sell the look very well (looking at you, Honda Marketing!). Metallic Grey is the base body color, but Honda applies a slick black graphic package over the top to give it a light contrast. The frame and ROPS (cage) are color-matched to other highlighted trim in a striking, bold blue. It’s a looker for sure.

IMPRESSIONS

The Talon 1000R is always a pleasure to drive. We have spent countless hours in previous model years, and we have grown to love them for their polished, comfortable experience and ease of use. This year’s upgrades bring even more automation to the plate, further increasing that comfort and polish. Fox’s Live Valve tech takes all of the effort out of having to tune your own suspension. Tinkerers and driving dynamic purists will likely prefer the adjustability of the standard Fox Podium shocks, but Honda isn’t offering them in 2021 yet. The Live Valve system looks at vehiclemounted sensors for input, and then makes programmed adjustments to the shocks’ stiff26 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2021 HONDA TALON 1000R FOX LIVE VALVE ness based on what it thinks will deliver the calmest, smoothest ride. It can read steering angle, inertia (pitch, yaw, roll), brake pressure, engine RPM, speed, gear position, and throttle position. Bosch’s high-tech IMU control unit parses this data multiple times per second, firing off small changes to each individual shock up to 200 times per second. This allows the computer to ramp valving changes up and down, smoothing out the blend between soft and stiff adjustments. The system works very well. When you turn, it stiffens up the outboard shocks to prevent body roll. Mash the brake, and the fronts stiffen up. The Talon’s brain works to control the ride very well, providing a comfortable ride at low speeds with a firm and confident feel at high speeds. Honda even gives you a dual mode switch, so you can select Normal shock tuning or Sport shock tuning. Sport provides a stiffer, more reactive ride. It affords great bottoming resistance on jumps and in whoops. Some drivers at more advanced skill levels may not prefer the feel of the Live Valve-suspended Talon over the standard model. The Live Valve system is great at keeping the ride flat, and it sometimes overrides the driver’s desire to fully transfer the car’s weight under hard braking or cornering. If you’re the type that enjoys breaking out the tape measure and setting spring height, crossover, and keeping notes on clicker positions, then Live Valve may not be for you either. For the rest of the UTV Offroaders out there that just want to hop in the seat, buckle up, and hold it wide open- the 2021 Talon 1000R with Live Valve offers a massive amount of comfort and confidence. It pegs the needle on the fun factor scale, with that parallel twin always wailing at high RPM. The Talon is made better by the revisions made to the shock tuning on the 2021 model as well, independent of the Live Valve system, which only replaces the compression adjuster. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 27

2021 HONDA TALON 1000R FOX LIVE VALVE Outside of the suspension updates, the Talon experience is nearly identical to previous models. It still offers the most high-tech transmission on the market. It doesn’t offer the raw, seriousnatured shift control of the YXZ1000R, but it has an automatic mode, and one that works darn well to boot. Honda’s new Launch Control feature has a 5-step procedure, made that way for safety reasons. From a stop: 1. Hold the brake. Hard. 2. Press the Launch button, wait for light. 3. Pull both paddles back, hold. 4. Let off the brake, don’t roll into anything. Apply desired throttle. 5. Release both paddles simultaneously, & enjoy!

28 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

It’s fun, and quite effective at getting the Talon out of the hole. We do wish that Honda would have removed the switch from the equation, like the system in the YXZ. Just pull the paddles, rev, and take off. Launch control is most effective on the trail, however. If you need an extra boost out of the hole, the Talon’s launch control feature can be fired off at less than full throttle. It isn’t something you will use often, but it will make you grin just knowing it’s there for when you want it. The 2021 Talon 1000R gets a big thumbs up from the crew here, and it packages a massive amount of high-end technology into a very fun-todrive UTV. All of that technology comes at a cost though, which happens to be $23,099. That’s a price tag lodged deeply in turbo car territory, but after driving one, you’ll agree it’s a steal.

GENERAL

1000 DELUXE The Swiss Army Knife of UTVs STORY: CODY HOOPER PHOTOS: ADAM CAMPBELL PHOTOGRAPHY

“J

ack of all trades, master of none”. This is the first quote that comes to mind when I hear the word “multitool” or something similar. In theory, if you spend all of your time trying to be good at everything, you’ll never truly master any one particular skill. Makes sense, right? Back in Fall of 2015, Polaris unveiled the General 1000, which they touted as the most versatile UTV on the market. Polaris boldly claimed that those looking for a utility UTV and a sport UTV would find the ultimate package with their new in-betweener, as the General 1000 aims to be the UTV owner’s ultimate multi-tool. But can it really be that good at both?

2020 POLARIS GENERAL 1000 DELUXE ENGINE

When Polaris made the decision to bring their engine manufacturing completely in-house for their Ranger and RZR lines years ago, it paid dividends early. The first ProStar engine we got to experience was the 570cc single in the RZR 570, followed by multiple introductions of the 900 and 1000cc ProStar twins in the following years. Polaris’s new ProStar UTV engines stood in stark contrast to the parallel-twin 760cc pushrod engine that came before it, providing more power, torque, reliability, and a much smoother driving experience. The General is equipped with a 100 horsepower version of the 999cc parallel-twin ProStar engine. Featuring dual overhead camshafts operating four valves per cylinder, the ProStar twin produces smooth, tractable power in gobs. Low and midrange power are key here, as the engine signs off a bit up top. The tradeoff in top-end power is worth the sacrifice, as the General is happy to blast its way up steep hills and rock faces with a stomp of the loud pedal. Acceleration from a standstill is strong and brisk; it will outrun everything in its class except for the occasional Can-Am Commander 1000R or Arctic Cat Havoc 1000 that may get the jump. Throttle modulation is slow initially but comes on strong in the midrange, showing that Polaris wanted to tune in some character that you can feel behind the wheel. It

works - while not RZR-quick, the General is just rowdy enough to be a blast on-trail. Even at 11,000 feet of elevation, the General’s ProStar twin engine had plenty of grunt to lug us and our gear all over the mountain. The engine and clutch tuning worked in harmony, even at high elevation.

TRANSMISSION/ DRIVETRAIN

The General gets Polaris’s standard-fare “PVT” belt-drive continuously variable transmission. It’s a similar setup to the systems you will find in the Ranger and RZR lines, operated by a long, center-console mounted gateless shift lever. It features high and low speeds, with a park position as well (no parking brake). Low-speed clutching is very smooth, with easy engagement in high or low that doesn’t lead to much bucking. Throttle response and clutch backshift are responsive as well, meaning throttle changes translate quickly into wheel speed. The General’s EBS calibration is well-tuned for downhill descents, but it isn’t overwhelmingly strong. Engagement is smooth and easy, reducing any head-tossing in the cab. We have yet to experience any belt slip, overheating, or belt failures during our testing, and we don’t expect to anytime soon. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 35

UTV REVIEW

SUSPENSION

The biggest reason to get the Deluxe trimmed- General: Fox Podium QS3 shocks versus the Sachs standard gas-charged shocks on the Sport and Premium versions. Fox’s 2.0” body Podium shocks are a staple in the industry for good reason: they are durable, ride well, and are easy to maintain and tune. We applaud Polaris for optioning the General with the QS3 shock adjuster package, as it will keep owners out of trouble when looking to adjust the ride stiffness. Fox’s QS3 adjuster is an easy, tool less compression adjuster that features three settings: Soft, Medium, and Firm. When in the Soft setting, the General rides incredibly well at low speeds. Trail debris, rocks, roots, and ruts don’t upset the car or the passengers. One of the big reasons this car rides so well is its suspension design. Dual A-Arm front and rear suspension underpins the General, and both

36 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

ends are supported by sway bars to keep the body roll in check. It handles well and responds to clicker adjustments with enthusiasm. The Fox QS3 shocks possess a wide delta of ride stiffness between settings 1 and 3, which will make faster drivers happy. Setting 3 (Firm) is great for fastpaced trail riding, but if you’re going slower, you’ll likely be in the softest setting to maximize the ride quality.

TIRES/WHEELS/BRAKES

The General wears Maxxis Coronado rubber in the Premium and Deluxe trims, which are an upgrade from the CST tires on the Sport (base) model. The Coronado is a great multi-terrain tire that we would recommend using until they’re finished before shelling out for a replacement set, unless your aim is to go up in tire size. The stock 27” tires are fairly small, but the General will clear larger rubber

with ease. The wheels on the Deluxe model look upscale, but they are not beadlock capable. The brakes on the General are great. Dual piston calipers grip large, vented rotors at all four corners. The binders are easy to modulate and hold the General on steep inclines well. Stomping on the brake pedal hard will lock the tires on most surfaces.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

When you step up to the Deluxe General trim, you get a lot for the money: • Special Color Treatments • Color-matched bucket seats • Polaris Accessory Sport front bumper • Polaris 4500 lb winch • Upgraded 14” aluminum wheels • 27” Maxxis Coronado Tires • Fox Podium 2.0 QS3 Shocks • Polaris Factory roof • Convex rear-view mirror • Rockford Fosgate Stage 1 Bluetooth stereo system

2020 POLARIS GENERAL 1000 DELUXE The Deluxe model tacks on $4,800 to the General’s base price before you add options and accessories. If there’s one factory option we would recommend, it’s the $2,000 Ride Command infotainment system and Rockford Fosgate Stage 4 Stereo Package. Ride Command features stereo controls, GPS, camera capability, GoPro integration, and more; the Stage 4 stereo package brings you four powered speakers and a powered subwoofer, all packaged neatly in CAD-designed enclosures that tuck up out of the way. The General’s interior is quite comfortable, featuring ample head, shoulder, and leg room for a unit this size. There are multiple storage compartments and the divided center console keeps the General from feeling like a utility UTV. The General has very good placement of armrests and handholds for both driver and passenger. The floorboards are very grippy and have good bracing points, although most of the time, your passenger will

likely be relaxing in their seat, enjoying the view and the supple ride along the trail. The gauges on the General are fantastic, a great mix of analog and digital instrumentation. A large LCD screen is flanked by analog tach and speedo needles that sweep in opposing arcs. The weather-sealed buttons on the binnacle’s side are easy to use, positioned where you don’t have to put your arm through the steering wheel to reach them. Nice touch, Polaris! Our test unit had the Ride Command and Rockford Fosgate Stage 4 Stereo Package, which adds a massive amount of connectivity and technology to the General. Bluetooth music functionality is great, and the audio quality pumped out of the Rockford Fosgate

system is fantastic, especially for a factory option. With Ride Command, you can see nearby friends who have either a Ride Command system in their Polaris UTV or are using the Ride Command mobile app. This is great for long days on the trail, as you can monitor where the other rigs in your crew are without having to rely on radios for all communication. It’s a great feature, and well worth the price of admission here.

IMPRESSIONS

The ride: where the rubber meets the trail, the spec sheets end, and the speculation stops. In this case, it’s where we find that the formula Polaris put together here really works. The General is as comfortable to work with as it is to trail ride with. The only caveat to the work side of things is that the General features a unique cab frame shape that doesn’t accept standard tube-style clamps. There are multiple

aftermarket clamp options available today to mount your gear and accessories. The dump bed is large, with easily enough room to pack large gear totes next to a 45 gallon cooler for extended trips on the trail. It also tows well, and is packaged with a 2” hitch receiver from the factory regardless of which trim level you choose. The dump bed also allows wonderful access to the engine and trans-

mission for servicing, if you’re the DIY type. On the trail, the General feels completely at home. The shocks have enough range of adjustment to suit multiple riding speeds, styles, and terrains without having to shell out a couple thousand dollars for upgrades. At moderate trail pace, the General steers, stops, and puts power down extremely well. It can cut a line on a wooded trail

with some of the best, and you’ll be doing it in complete comfort. It’s only in the really big, deep holes that you find the limit of the General’s suspension. With over a foot of wheel travel at both ends, the General swallows up bumps on the trail very well. For reference, the original RZR 800 had 9” front and 9.5” rear suspension travel- 3.25 inches less up front and 3.7 inches less in the rear than the General.

2020 POLARIS GENERAL 1000 DELUXE

Recalling the quote in the opening lines of this story, a jack of all trades is often a master of none. However, the General reminded me of the entire quote: “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Sure, there are better pure-utility UTVs on the market, and there are definitely far more capable vehicles in the sport UTV category. However, in this segment, where customers need to work and play with the same rig, the General is a masterclass in cross-functionality.

miles per hour. That was the GPS screen’s “TOP SPEED” readout when the Monster-Energy Can Am T948 race car crossed the dry lake at the Mint 400. Matt Burroughs’ Can Am race car started life as a $29,999 Maverick X3 Max X RS, and still retains quite a bit of its factory hardware. Despite being a tube-frame race car built to strict class regulations by Vendetta Motorsports, this X3 still has its stock engine, clutches, transmission, differentials, CV joints and more. Built in late 2018, this long and lean X3 combines a massive wheelbase with Cognito Motorsports suspension hardware, which really lets it eat miles up across the desert floor. It runs a tall & skinny set of 33x9.5R-15 System3 RT320 tires, which are clamped onto a set of custom OMF billet wheels with steel center sections for added strength. First raced at the famed Vegas to Reno in 2018, the Monster Can Am showed massive speed potential, but did not finish. Racing a brand-new car is tough, but an all-new platform is even tougher. The Monster Energy Can Am and Vendetta Motorsports team kept their noses to the grindstone with a packed racing and testing schedule. In 2019, Matt finished mid-pack at Vegas to Reno, and 9th in the Pro UTV Turbo class at the Baja 500. Continuous testing and improvement allowed the team to dial the car in further, and they recently achieved a hard-earned podium finish in the Pro UTV Turbo class at the 2019 Baja 1000. Besides the custom fabrication work and a handful of one-off parts, most of the items used to prepare this car for battle can be purchased by the public. Check out the build list for information on how much the parts cost and where to find them!

B

RP and its lineup of CanAm Off-Road vehicles have been on a roll recently, leading the performance off-road world. But never one to take success for granted on and off the track, Can-Am is about to push the boundaries even further with the introduction of SmartShox technology, available on the highly anticipated Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR for 2021. Smart-Shox technology is an industry-first, fully self-adjustable suspension technology for superior performance, control and comfort. It is the only suspension in the industry that controls both compression and rebound for enhanced precision, delivering superior ride and handling, no matter the terrain or conditions. Even better? Shock adjustments are a thing of the past – now drivers can dominate at the touch of a button.

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 3

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro or a weekend warrior, this technology will make your rides better,” says Casey Currie, winner of the 2020 Dakar Rally in a Can-Am Maverick X3. “Smart-Shox is one of those game-changing innovations that brings a smile to my face knowing I’ll have a competitive advantage over anything else out there. With Smart-Shox, the Maverick X3 sticks to the ground in a way I’ve never experienced, and I can’t wait to get out and race.”

4 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2021 CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 X rs TURBO RR There are three major benefits to Smart-Shox semi-active suspension technology:

1. ENHANCED PERFORMANCE

3. MORE COMFORT

2. BETTER CONTROL

Available in store this fall, these elements are what make the 2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR the pinnacle of performance in the CanAm Maverick lineup, which offers something for everyone. From two-seaters to four-seaters, and the entry-level RS to the new high-end X rs with Smart-Shox, the entire lineup is purpose-built for high performance. Expect a full review at utvoffroadmag.com in the coming months.

The system constantly monitors wheel position and velocity for improved shock absorption and filtering, acting on both compression and rebound. It is the only system in the industry with rebound, and it also has the industry’s fastest valve reaction time – Smart-Shox can go all the way from full soft to full firm in an average of seventeen milliseconds (0.017s). What does this mean? Better tracking of the ground surface for increased traction. Better launches. More comfort on undulating terrain. And the feeling you’re truly connected to the ground as lesser machines struggle to keep up. Smart-Shox technology makes real-time automatic suspension adjustments, improving vehicle stability and providing excellent control with flatter cornering. It reduces front and rear bouncing, while minimizing vehicle body movement, adjusting automatically to any type of terrain after selecting a driving mode: Comfort, Sport, or Sport+. Why do you care? Significantly improved stability means high performance with high confidence.

Smart-Shox technology is all about maximum performance and comfort, providing both soft and hard damping advantages at the same time, per wheel, instantaneously. Even bottom-out and topping-out protection is factored into the automatic calibration. Why does it matter? Experts need not apply: just get in and drive, and reap all the benefits while the system does all the work. It also means less mechanical stress, with reduced impact loads on key components. And beyond that, the improved ride quality means less rider fatigue, so you don’t have to think twice about extending epic days.

TIRE REPAIR BUYER’S GUIDE WORDS: GREG THOMAS PHOTOS: MANUFACTURERS

TIREJECT $57.99

What ruins a great ride more than a flat tire? Isn’t it maddening when you feel that steering wheel pulling to one side, and you peek out to see the tire squished between the rim and the dirt? The thoughts that come to mind in that situation are usually grim. How bad is this? Do I have my repair kit? Will this end my day? The good news is that there are things you can do to avoid this becoming a larger problem than it has to be. Here are some great products to help you be prepared for any flat tire scenario you may face.

SLIME

Tire Tackle Repair Kit $9.89

There are quite a few players in the tire sealant game. Tire sealants are a liquefied substance that is put inside the tire usually via the valve stem. It sloshes around the tire as it rolls and provides air leak protection from the inside of the tire. TireJect is one of the more popular tire sealants available. Once installed, TireJect will provide protection against punctures in the tread or sideway up to 3/8 inches. It also protects against bead leaks and minor dry rot.

TIREBALLS $232

If you find yourself in an overly leaky situation SLIME makes a nice tire repair kit that can be used to fix almost any size puncture. This kit comes in a handy storage box with all the tools you will need to plug a hole. The T-Handled reapers and pluggers are sturdy and usually there is room to store additional tire repair strings.

The TireBalls inflation system consists of multiple individually inflated cells or “balls” in your tire. The product allows a single cell to be punctured without compromising the rest of the cells. A single puncture won't make your tire go flat, and damaged cells can be replaced fairly easily. Many times, failure of a single cell or even multiple cells wouldn't even be noticed by the driver.
