Casey Currie, an American off-road racer and Monster Energy athlete, recently join Team South Racing / Can-Am to compete and win the Mitsubishi Motors Desafio Inca Challenge (Dakar Series) desert race Sept. 14-16 in Peru, South America. Currie, and co-pilot Laurent Lichtleuchter, drove the No. 202 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle — sponsored and built by South Racing and Scott Abraham — to a class victory AND the event overall, edging all categories, including cars and trucks. "WINNER!!! We came to Peru to learn for Dakar and came home winners in the SXS categories. My co-driver absolutely killed it with the tough navigation and the South Racing team prepped a perfect car," stated Currie on his Facebook page. With his Stage 1 win, Currie set the pace for the rest of the field and kept the pressure on all the way to finish to record the victory. He ended up with two stage victories and an overall time of 12:47:01.0 over the course of the race to win the event by almost 2 full hours over the runner-up. This Dakar series, including the Inca Challenge, prepares the off-road pilots for the actual Dakar event to be held in January 2019, because some of the races traverse the very same terrain through various South American countries that make up the Dakar course. Currie stated on the official racing Desafio Inca Challenge site that the race was an enriching experience for him that afforded him plenty chances to learn on the fly. With the win, Currie has achieved one his seasonal and lifetime goals, and that is to be able compete this January in Dakar. He said many Americans want to race Dakar and now he has a chance to do just that in a Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle.

Until 2018, Can-Am did not produce a trail-friendly machine, but that changed with the introduction of the Maverick Trail. The non-power steering Trail comes with either a 51-horsepower, 799.9cc Rotax twin, or a 75-horsepower 976cc, Rotax twin. Both machines have fuel injection and the Visco-Lok front differential. The interior is laid out using Can-Am’s Ergo-Lok design that provides comfort and control, and helps make the Trail a great machine to drive.

Maverick Trail DPS
You might think that the Trail DPS machines just have the addition of power steering, but Can-Am added a lot more than that to the Maverick trail DPS. Available with both the 800 and 1000 engine platforms, the DPS gets the faster engaging Visco-Lok QE system and a locking rear differential for better traction. The throttle mapping also has Sport and ECO modes, that give you a choice between faster power delivery or better fuel economy. You’ll also notice LED accent lighting and 12-inch aluminum wheels, along with some stylish accents in the Ergo-Lok cockpit. The Maverick Trail DPS is a truly fun machine to drive in tighter terrain.

CAN-AM
Building off the success and performance of the Maverick Trail, the Sport is a 60-inch wide machine that adds a new level of agility and stability to the market. The non-DPS Sport is powered by a 75-horsepower 976cc Rotax V-twin and comes loaded with Fox Podium 2.0 shocks and aluminum wheels.

MAVERICK SPORT DPS 1000R
Similar to the Trail DPS, the Maverick Sport DPS adds more than just power steering to the machine. The most notable is the addition of a secondary engine option. The 1000R takes the same base 976cc Rotax and bumps it up to 100 horsepower by way of additional air intakes and digital throttle mapping. You’ll find the same Sport and ECO modes that the Trail has, and it also comes with the Visco-Lok QE front and locking rear differentials for optimal traction. The Maverick Sport quickly became a favorite among testers.

MAVERICK SPORT X Rc
Can-Am knew they had a winner with the Sport and saw applications for the machine for some specific terrain, in this case rocks and desert. The X rc has wider Arched A-arms for a 64-inch stance. Mated to them are Fox Podium 2.5 QS3 piggyback shocks with 14.75-inches of travel. Power is supplied by the 1000R 100-horsepower engine with Rock and Trail driving modes and the Smart-Lok lock-on-the-fly front differential. Special bumpers, rock sliders and skid plates provide protection and a 4,500-pound winch with synthetic rope helps pull you out when things get too hairy. 30-inch Maxxis Liberty tires wrapped around 14-inch aluminum wheels help bump ground clearance up to 15 inches, making the X rc a rock crawling beast.

HONDA
PIONEER
The four-wheel drive Pioneer 500 is a perfect example of Honda’s take on the UTV market. It also shows that Honda uses technologies learned from its other branches, especially automotive. The engine is a 475cc liquid-cooled, singlecylinder four stroke fed via electronic fuel injection. For a transmission, Honda uses an automotive-style five-speed automatic with the option for the driver to shift through the gears manually using column-mounted paddle shifters. Instead of a cargo box, the Pioneer 500 has a steel cargo rack, similar to what you’d find on an ATV.

PIONEER 700/700-4
The Pioneer 700 and the 700-4 are Honda’s mid-sized UTVs, and they are quite capable. Powered by a 675cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, the 700 also uses an automotive-style transmission. That transmission is available in two configurations. In the standard 700 and 700-4, it is a standard three-speed auto. In the Deluxe 700 and 700-4, you can select between automatic, or manual shifting with the paddle shifters. The engine has a torque converter and combined with the automotive-style transmission, the engine feels extremely torquey and powerful. The deluxe editions also get a front bumper and aluminum wheels.

PIONEER 1000/1000-5
Honda’s biggest Pioneer has a 999cc twin-cylinder engine Honda developed for their rally racing motorcycles. It runs through a dual-clutch transmission system that allows you to select automatic mode, or manual shift mode with six forward gears. These gears can be used in high and low range, giving the Pioneer 1000 an extremely low first gear and the best engine braking in the industry. The limited-Edition Pioneer also had Honda’s i4WD intelligent four-wheel drive system to senses wheel slippage, much like you’d find on an SUV. The LE also comes with Fox Podium QS-3 shocks and a hill-start assist that gives you braking power to get a comfortable start from a stop on an incline. Like on the 700-4, the 1000-5 has two seats that fold out of the rear cargo bed for additional passenger space.

TERYX
Kawasaki came out with the first modern side-by-side with the original Mule many years ago. Since then the UTV market has exploded into new areas of use and performance, but Kawasaki has remained true to its roots, and instead of chasing the horsepower titles and instead choosing to be a dominant force in the utility and recreation scene. All Kawasaki’s carry a three-year warranty.
TERYX / TERYX 4
Kawasaki’s adventure vehicle, the Teryx has a strong following among UTV drivers who want a go-anywhere machine. The Teryx is heavy and rugged with a dual X steel-tube frame that is as sturdy as they get. The centrally-located 783cc V-twin engine has a hearty rumble and a ton of available torque. The suspension is handled by Fox Podium 2.0 piggyback shocks and dual A-arms all around. The Teryx is available in a two-seat version with a dumping cargo box rated at 600-pounds and there are twin sealed cargo boxes located behind the seats for additional storage. The T4 has two rear passenger seats and smaller, non-dumping cargo bed perfect for carrying a cooler. The Teryx can tow 1,300 pounds and is the machine to have if you really want to go places that are hard to reach.

The Stampede was introduced and is a good machine, but then the opportunity to acquire Arctic Cat came into play and the rest is history. Textron is now a major player with serious capitol, engineering and manufacturing to back it up.

YXZ 1000R and YXZ 1000R SE
The YXZ garnered a lot of attention when it was first introduced in 2015. While everyone else had twin cylinder sport machines mated to a CVT tranny, Yamaha burst on the scene with a 998cc inline triple mated to a fivespeed manual sequential-shift transmission with a foot-operated clutch. For 2019, the engine gets new higher-strength rods and a new cooling system for increased durability. Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 piggyback shocks grace the corners, and new brakes and a revised frame make the YXZ handle even better. The beefier engine internals make it a synch to add Yamaha’s available turbo charger, which makes the YXZ a beast. The SE Special Edition gets the Team Yamaha Blue color and beadlock wheels.

The SS, which stands for Sport Shift gets all the same updates that the manual clutch version got for 2019, including the updated engine and chassis. All YXZs ride on 29-inch Maxxis Bighorn tires, too. The big difference between these machines is that the SS models have an automatic clutch and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Like the manual clutch version, the SS has a five-speed sequential transmission with reverse. The Special Edition SE SS models have custom colors and beadlock wheels. And like the manual clutch version, the SS is ready for you to add on the optional Yamaha Turbo Charger to fully unleash the potential of the YXZ.

VIKING AND VIKING VI
The Viking is Yamaha’s utility model, although it makes a good platform for trail riding and hunting, too. With a single-cylinder 686cc four stroke, the Viking has a torquey powerband that runs out through Yamaha’s amazing Ultramatic CVT transmission. The standard Viking is available with or without electronic power steering and all models come with a sun top. The Viking seats three with each seat being a bucket seat. The middle passenger has a 5-degree recline to help keep shoulders from rubbing. The same setup is used in the rear seating of the Viking VI models. All Viking VI models have power steering, and the Viking VI Ranch Edition comes with special colors and a brush guard.

2019 CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT
CAN-AM
MAVERICK SPORT BY DERREK SIGLER
WHY YOU WANT THE CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT
When I first drove the new Can-Am Maverick Sport, I was impressed. I was up in Canada at the Carl Kuster Mountain Park near Sicamous, BC, and the trails were amazing, making a great place to introduce the Sport. When I got back home and my test unit arrived, I was feeling pretty smitten with the Sport. This is a truly great sport-class UTV and the more I drive it, the more I like it. You’re going to want one. I’m just warning you ahead of time. PONY UP Technically speaking, there are three variations of the Maverick Sport. The base Sport 1000 without power steering, the Sport 1000 DPS with power steering and the 1000R DPS. A 976cc Rotax V-Twin engine powers all three. The base model and the 1000 DPS have a version of the engine that produces 75hp. The 1000R produces a much more intense 100hp.

FIRST TEST
In reality, it’s the same engine. Can-Am borrows tech from the X3 to help regulate horsepower. Both versions come with large air intakes, oversized radiators and Donaldson airboxes come standard on both, but the 1000R uses a larger airbox from the Maverick X3, a specialized high-performance exhaust line and muffler, an additional CVT intake and the same CVT driven pulley from the Maverick X3. The difference is amazing and hella fun. Driving both the 1000 DPS and the 1000R back-to-back is an eye-opening experience. The 75hp 1000 is a fun machine, and very capable. Jumping up to the 1000R and the 25 additional ponies is seriously like adding a turbo to the machine. IT’S NOT THE TRAIL Don’t make the mistake of confusing the Maverick Sport with the Maverick Trail. I know I did when I first saw it, thinking that Can-Am simply added wider A-arms to make the machine wider. Not really the case here. The Sport’s frame has the same 90.6-in. wheelbase from the Maverick Trail. That longer wheelbase keeps you planted on the terrain, and combined with the 60-inch width means that the Sport is very stable. All variations of the Can-Am Maverick Sport use double A-Arm front suspension and Torsional Trailing Arm (TTA) rear suspension. FOX 2.0 Podium shocks provide the shock duties with the front having 11.5-inches of travel and the rear shocks offering 12-inches of travel. Like the Trail, the Sport geometry positions the shocks at the outermost corners of the machine. This design gives the chassis more stability and improves handling by reducing the load on the sway bars that are built into the front and rear systems. Add this to the wheelbase of the Sport and you’ve got a great handling suspension system. Driving the Sport on my own terrain has been crazy fun. We have a lot of tight, wooded trails with lots of sand thrown in. We 58
UTVOFFROADMAG.COM
get a lot of what we call chatter bumps, small grouped bumps that will make your teeth chatter like you’re freezing. Normally you have to slow down when you hit a section of these, as you’ll often lose control quickly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had the back end of the machine start to wash out on me as I hit these sections too fast. In the Maverick Sport, however, it was a whole other story. I have never driven a machine where I could hammer through and not only stay in complete control of the machine at speed, but hardly notice the terrain. The combination of wheelbase, suspension geometry and overall suspension system handling is nearly perfect in my opinion. Heck, I even noticed something small but cool. My cup of coffee, which as we all know if the most important beverage ever, was in the cup holder, which is on the floor near the shift column, and I never spilled a drop thanks to the rubber flanges that held my cup in place. I’d be lying if I said that my opinion may have changed had my coffee spilled. I mean seriously, it was a mocha latte… HIP-HOP AND ERGO-LOK Can-Am uses the term Ergo-Lok to describe the ergonomics of their cockpit. If you’ve ever sat in an X3 or the Maverick Trail you know that it is a different feel. You are positioned with a slightly recline that takes a little getting used to. It’s not reclined like Al Bundy watching a football game in his favorite reclinersort of reclined. And once you’re used to it, you’ll feel very comfortable behind the wheel because of how in control you’ll feel. Combine this with the positioning of the controls and you’ll quickly see why this machine is so sweet. And I’ll go ahead and say it – the Maverick Sport has the best doors on the market today. The door is a full half door that doesn’t pinch in on you and the handles are amazing. Yeah, I know. I’m gushing about a door, but how many UTV doors are really good? To
2019 CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT me, it says a lot about Can-Am’s commitment to making great products. PRETTY CONFIDENT Can-Am uses three words in marketing the Maverick Sport - daring, precise and confident. You will get a lot of confidence with how well the machine handles the terrain. It tracks very well going down the trail and the steering and suspension is incredibly precise. The engine, especially the 1000R, let’s you go as fast as you want, but I have to admit, the standard 75hp motor cruises along at a pretty solid clip. When I first reviewed the Sport and talked to Can-Am about how I felt, my biggest complaint, and it was a small one, was that the positioning of the rear tires can let your cargo area get pretty muddy, as stuff will fling up and coat your cargo. So, when my test unit showed up, wouldn’t you know that they included the optional extended rear mud guards? Problem solved. If you want to talk about daring, I’ll pass along a little anecdote. When I took my test unit out on the trail for the first time, I was just slowly cruising along, reintroducing myself to the machine. A guy came screaming up from behind me driving a competitor-brand machine. He blew past me and gave me the “thumbs up” as he went past. I’ve seen this guy around before and he thinks he’s pretty hot stuff in his UTV. Remember those chatter bumps I was talking about earlier? I had caught up to this guy after a short while because I decided to drive a little faster and he really doesn’t have the skill set he thinks he does. Even though his machine had a horsepower advantage, catching up to his rear wheel was pretty easy and when we came into the chatter bumps, his back end started swapping around and bucking like a mechanical bull in a cheesy urban cowboy bar. I was confident in the Maverick Sport to gas it and scoot past him, leaving him to feel the wrath of my roost. I did not return the favor of the “thumbs up” because let’s face it – the guy just wasn’t cool enough. Can-Am has since released several new variants of the Maverick Sport with mud running and rock crawling editions, along with one I am extremely interested in driving – the Maverick Sport MAX four seater. Can-Am has been on the gas lately with new models and new innovations. If this keeps up, 2019 is going to be a great year indeed! The bottom line is, the Sport is an amazingly stable, fun to drive machine. I look forward to driving it more and you should definitely go and check one out if you’re looking for a 60-inch wide machine to hit the trails and terrain wherever you are.

SUPER ATV
SUPER ATV
SuperATV’s 8” GDP Portal Gear Lifts are the tallest of their kind in the industry, but they have more than height. An improved design includes a rubber O-ring gasket to seal the portal box halves, and a drive gear that is now internally sealed so even if your axle is rough or damaged the box won’t leak oil. The new design also gives you a 1.5” forward and rear offset allowing for even more clearance. You now have the option to order them with micro-polished gears for smoother operation and better performance. What does all of this mean? GDP Portal Gear Lifts are tougher and more reliable than ever. The offset means you can fit monster tires on your machine and the built-in 45% gear reduction gives you the torque to turn them. That gear reduction also keeps your driveline from working too hard, so you won’t break axles or damage your diff.
SuperATV’s completely redesigned 6” Lift Kit for the Can-Am Commander changes the way you ride. It has been built from the ground up with strength in mind. With added rear suspension links and heavy-duty, steel-plated trailing arms, this kit has the superior strength that the Commander needs. It’s a true to size 6” lift kit which means you get clearance for up to 38” tires. The 60” wide stance gives you more stability, but it’s narrow enough to fit on your trailer and take you down the trail. It has performance. It has strength, and it has comfort. This lift doesn’t make your suspension back-breakingly stiff and you can still make tight turns. More clearance, bigger tires, and more stability means you can ride harder trails in more places and take your machine to the limit.
