A NEW DAWN

I

love print magazines, but what I love more is to design the articles in it. I probably spend way too much time on the look of each article as well as each photograph that goes with it. If I got paid by the hour, I would be Trump rich. The end design is important to help communicate the message that we are trying to convey to you, our reader. This is something that the Internet has not yet figured out. Of course, digital editions of print magazines include features that you can’t get from a typical print magazine like the ability to click on URLs and go directly to a company’s website. Beyond this interactive feature, there is not much more they are doing. So if you are reading this on your computer or other digital device, then you may get what is going on. As of this issue, we are going headstrong into the digital age. We are stopping our print magazine and bringing you what I think will be the future of magazine publishing.

This is my opportunity to expand viewer reach, keep high-quality design, produce more text, photos, and videos without being constrained by the parameters of a typical print magazine. The ability to add video is what I'm most excited about. While we haven't done much video on our YouTube channel, that will change in the future. Most videos we take from here on out will be uploaded to our YouTube channel so you will get to see them first in the magazine. This is another creative outlet that I'm looking forward to exploring. So, for now, I hope you enjoy this issue and know that each issue will only get better with time. If you haven't already signed up for the digital magazine, go to www. utvoffroadmag.com -- it's FREE! RACINGNEWS TEAM SUPERATV RACER, SETH QUINTERO At 16 years old with a UTV World Championship win under his belt, Seth Quintero was ready for his 2018 racing season. As a rookie in the desert world, the Mint 400 was his first Best in the Desert race. Starting in 16th position, he knew he had his work cut out for him, but he didn’t let that stop him. He ended up finishing 2nd and went on to place 4th in his class at UTV World. Hungry for more, Quintero trained for Vegas to Reno, the longest off-road race in the US. As it was his first time racing in V2R, he wanted to make sure he was prepared for this 550 mile trudge. Although they did have some mechanical issues coming into pit 4, his team moved quickly and got him back in the race within 10 minutes. Quintero was able to finish the race in 11 hours and earn his 2nd place stripes. He ended the racing season by finishing in the top 10 at the Pahrump 250. Six races, all finished with zero failures running SuperATV Rhino 2.0 Axles. Seth has been a part of #TeamSuperATV for the past 4 years and we must say, we’re proud to have him. “These Rhino 2.0 Axles are insane! They give you confidence and no doubt about going high speed through the roughest terrain in the desert.” – Seth Quintero

LATIN AMERICA & AFRICA CHAMPIONS The off-road racing scene in Latin America has a large following and Can-Am racers did not disappoint in 2018, winning several big races, including the aforementioned Dakar Rally. The tandem of Bruno Varela (son of Reinaldo) and co-driver Gustavo Gugelmin won the Afrique Merzouga Rally in Morocco, Africa. Enrico Amarante and Breno Rezende took the victory at the Rally dos Sertoes, which marked the sixth straight title for Can-Am. Casey Currie, won the Desafio Inca championship with his South Racing / Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle as well this year. The BRZ (Brazilian) Cross Country Nationals championship was earned by Deni Nascimento and Idali Bosse, while Rodrigo Varela too home the 2018 BRZ Baja Nationals championship in a Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle. Can-Am Maverick racers won all the titles and every round of the Nationals for the second year in a row. RUSSIA CHAMPIONS In its 9th season and continually growing, the Can-Am X Race Russia, is cross-country rally racing series that pits drivers, co-pilots and their vehicles against the elements and many obstacles in a three-race format to find true champions. It also offers four total SSV classes (based upon performance) and also a quad class. Anatoly Kuznetsov / Alexey Smolin finished fourth at the Chelyabinsk Region finale to earn enough points to win the Can-Am X Race SSV Standard class title in their Can-Am Maverick X mr 1000. Guided by the victory at stop 1 on the circuit and two additional podium finishes, drivers Azat Minnikhanov / Ilnaz Gizzatullin won the SSV Sport class championship in their Can-Am Maverick X3 X ds Turbo R. The relatively new SSV Super Sport segment was the largest SSV class. Sergey Karjakin / Anton Vlasyuk secured the season championship in their Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R by winning the third stage of the series. The SSV Absolute class title went to Artem Khairullin / Alexey Kuzmich, who, despite not earning an overall win, proved to be the most consistent, scoring enough points to earn the series championship. We also love testing the latest and greatest super UTVs on the market in the sand. If you didn't know, the sand dunes rob power (depending on the sand -- not all are the same) and your tire setup. Paddle tires are good for any UTV at the dunes as they grip and float across the sand. Having power to the ground to let the

paddles do their work is important, and this is why Turbo UTVs have been the vehicle of choice for dune lovers. POWERTRAIN The Textron Wildcat XX uses a variation of the 3-cylinder Yamaha engine found in the YXZ mated to an all-new CVT system developed in conjunction with Team Industries. A different set of camshafts, intake manifold, and throttle body system bumps the Wildcat’s power output to 125 horsepower in naturally aspirated trim vs the YXZ’s 114. Later on, Textron will offer a

factory turbocharged version of this same engine, rumored to produce well over 200 horsepower. The factory Yamaha turbo sled motor this engine is based on is rated at 210 horsepower. At launch, Speed will offer a bolt-on Procharger kit that works with the stock engine and boosts power output to a claimed 180 horsepower on pump gas. The best part? Robby Gordon informed us that someone could bolt on the whole kit in 2-3 hours with an average mechanical skillset thanks to the Wildcat XX’s removable bedpan. The inline three-cylinder engine is 998cc UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 23

and features a dual overhead cam setup with an auxiliary 65-amp alternator pre-installed from the factory. A large plastic cover keeps rocks and trail debris away from the alternator belt. A single large throttle body controls engine speed via a drive by wire system. Throttle mapping is progressive and smooth for the first 75% of the pedal travel, making easy work of tight, technical terrain without being jumpy or lurchy. With two people in the car, the Wildcat screams up to its electronically limited 75 mph top speed quickly. It’s not RZR XP Turbo or Maverick X3 fast, but then again, no naturally-aspirated sport UTV is. The large CVT clutches have cooling fans bolted to them, good for a near leaf blower-like stream of air out of the CVT’s exhaust duct at high RPM. Robby and his team targeted belt temps of 180 degrees during hard use to ensure belt life and clutch longevity. The car features dual CVT air intakes for maximum airflow, and sports very large clutches that are tuned very well from the factory. 24 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Textron also worked with Team Industries to develop a new, oversized front differential and rear transaxle. The drivetrain is specific to this Wildcat and is not offered on any other UTV. Coupled with the largest CV joints and beefiest axles we have seen on a factory UTV, the Wildcat XX is sure to be plenty durable. The front differential features a positive locking switch for crawling as well, selectable by a dash-mounted rocker switch. The clutch cover itself is attached with tool-less quickrelease fasteners, and you don’t have to wrestle the cover around the rear shock to remove it. Trailside repairs in the event of a breakdown won’t have you cursing before you even get the clutch cover off! The new Textron Wildcat XX is an all-new vehicle from the ground up. There are no recycled frame sections, suspension parts, or powertrain pieces pulled from a previous model. From front to rear, top to bottom, this car is 100% Textron, and it is healthier because of it. The clean-slate build represents a different way of doing things for a UTV manufacturer, as Textron has enlisted the

help of Robby Gordon, Todd Romano, and the Speed Energy Racing Crew to develop what they feel is the most capable, durable stock UTV on the market. SUSPENSION & CHASSIS Arctic Cat teased us with an all-new suspension design on the Wildcat RG Pro edition, which sported a revised dual A-arm front end with unequal length A-arms, and Y-link trailing arm rear setup. The entire purpose of the redesign was two-fold: 1) Strength/Durability, and 2) Vehicle Control. In a typical 3, 4, or 5 link trailing arm rear suspension setup with radius rods, a fixed 26 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

length axle is fitted to the car. This means that as the wheel moves up and down in its travel, it also moves inwards and outwards in an arc, using the axle as the radius of the arc. Imagine a bird flapping its wings- the width from wing tip to wing tip varies as they move up and down. This is typically a reliable setup and a great way to get huge travel numbers with little camber or toe change, but the deficit comes in track width variation. If you’ve ever put a RZR XP or a Can-Am Maverick X3 on a jack and lifted it up high enough to get the rear wheels off the ground, you likely noticed that the vehicle’s track width changes dramatically throughout

TEXTRON OFF ROAD WILDCAT XX

the suspension travel. At full droop, the car is at its narrowest width, usually 6-12 inches narrower than at ride height. This side-to-side movement of the tire affects cornering and stability during compression and rebound, causing the car to feel busy through whoops, G-outs, and heavy cornering loads. Imagine the tire moving outwards every time it compresseseven without changing the toe angle, the tire scrubbing across the surface of the trail acts as a steering arm regardless. This can be felt during cornering where the trail is bumpy or busy, causing the car to feel like it is trying to turn slightly without altering steering angle.

The Textron Wildcat XX’s all-new Y-link rear trailing arms do not use radius rods, and the track width is fixed throughout the travel. They are mounted using a dual spherical joint setup at the front of the trailing arm, and are paired with a plunging axle. Textron has succeeded in eliminating the busy, wandering feeling as the rear suspension cycles through its travel. This is the same type of setup you would find on a Class One buggy, and it’s great for hammering through rough terrain under throttle while being able to steer the car precisely down the trail. Rear suspension travel on the Wildcat XX is limited to 18 inches (just like the front), and UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 27

is controlled by Fox Podium QS3 shocks with dual-rate springs and crossover adjustment. The rear shocks also have Fox’s bottom-out control technology, which use an internal cup as a bypass to stiffen up the shock as it reaches full compression. This is done by fitting a plunger-like attachment to the top of the shock shaft that enters another compression tube during the last 25% of the shock’s travel. Once the plunger is inside the compression tube, shock movement 28 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

is controlled by another, stiffer valve stack that bypasses the original valving. At full compression on flat ground, the Wildcat XX was engineered to still have 3.5" of ground clearance underneath the skidplate to avoid slapping the belly of the car on the ground (which you get in some other high performance UTVs). In the front, Textron employed a new Speeddesigned dual A-arm setup that is very similar to the J-arm setup found on most high-

DUNE TEST

end desert racecars. By using a shorter and narrower top arm, Textron was able to bolt the shock to the lower A-arm, standing the shock up to the proper motion ratio without having to poke the shocks through the top of the hood. Shocks work using the physics of leverage, and any measures taken to reduce the suspension’s leverage on the shock itself helps to reduce fade and harshness. The Wildcat XX is rated for 14 inches of ground clearance off the showroom floor. The extremely long arms and narrowoffset 15” KMC wheels allowed Textron to get the wheel bearing centerline positioned directly in the center of the wheel, negating kickback through the steering system by reducing the leverage placed on the steering rack. The steering rack is front-mounted, which also decreases kickback by moving the steering arm pivot point to the front of the knuckle. The stock front knuckles are forged aluminum pieces that are claimed to be as strong or stronger than mild steel. All of the suspension and steering mounting points are double shear mounted, meaning that the bolts are captured on both ends for added strength. The front end uses spherical joints instead of ball joints, increasing their strength. Spherical joints are a little more maintenance-intensive than a sealed ball joint, especially in muddy terrain, which may prove to be an early replacement item. However, the strength tradeoff is well worth it. The Wildcat XX's lug pattern is 4 x 156, which is the most common lug pattern in the UTV industry currently. RZR owners who purchase a Wildcat XX can use their existing wheels and tires, as long as the wheel offset is correct. Front suspension travel is also internally limited within the shock to 18 inches, giving the Wildcat XX a very balanced feel front to rear. The Fox Podium QS3 shocks are 30 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

dual-rate sprung and crossover adjustable up front. We left the preload and crossover settings alone, and had the front shock compression set at level 2, with the rears at level 3. The manual rack is electrically assisted with a very strong power steering unit, filtering nearly all of the feedback out of the wheel. Speed will also be offering an extremely strong racing steering rack as a factory accessory. Some drivers during our test session thought the steering was too light for their tastes, but the faster you drive the car, the more you appreciate the kickback-free steering. Even loading one wheel into a G-out mid-turn doesn’t wiggle the steering wheel, allowing the driver to exercise precise control over the vehicle at insane speeds over rough terrain. INTERIOR The Wildcat XX offers what may be the roomiest and most comfortable cab of any stock sport UTV. The seating position is great, although the wheel is slightly further away from the driver than we would like. An aftermarket steering hub will remedy that easily. Standard on every Wildcat XX is a hidden harness bar positioned behind the seats at shoulder height, ensuring proper fitment of 4 or 5 point harnesses, which can be threaded through the stock seat’s passthrough slots. The stock seats are strong and comfortable, with a ton of padding to keep you from bouncing off of the seat base. The cockpit is very driver-focused, with a 60/40-split center stack that is angled towards the driver for visibility. The ignition key is placed in front of the shifter on the center stack. There are four dummy plugs in the dash alongside the key for aftermarket switches, and the wiring work is already done from the factory. There are four accessory

wire sets installed on every Wildcat XX, which are run from the dash panel where the switches reside to the fuse box. Run your accessory wires to the fuse box, plug in a switch, and you’re dialed. Above the switch panel is a large, blank plastic panel secured with four screws. This panel is sized for either a Lowrance GPS or an iPad mini, whichever you prefer. Mounting is simple, and the power leads are pre-installed from the factory. A small cubby resides in front of the shifter, perfect for holding phones, sunglasses, gloves, etc. The two rubber-damped cup holders keep water bottles held in place easily, even in spirited driving. In front of the passenger sits a cavernous 4-gallon glovebox. During our day with the Wildcat, we had a sweatshirt, two pairs of spare goggles, two pairs of gloves,

and a couple water bottles in the glovebox. Legroom is plentiful, and the areas that your legs contact in the cab are smooth and free of rough edges or fasteners. The dead pedal is set to the same height as the gas pedal, which reduces fatigue on your body due to having one leg bent and the other straight. Passenger legroom is available in spades, with angled footrests and grab bars on either side of the seat. The cab is very comfortable, even if it is relatively spartan in its design. The glovebox features a 12v accessory port (there are two onboard) and an optional dual-USB charge port for phones or cameras. The thick-rimmed padded steering wheel is very comfortable, and is tilt adjustable. The driver’s seat is adjustable fore and aft via a sliding base, but the passenger’s seat

must be adjusted by unbolting the seat base and sliding it forward or backward. The overall interior design is well laid out and very comfortable, even when bashing through big desert bumps. A new dualscreen LCD dash display houses lots of useful information, including speed, trip, RPM, hours, service info, ambient air temperature, engine temperature, and more. It’s not nearly as pretty or high-tech as the gauge cluster in the Can-Am X3 (nothing is as of yet), but it is easily legible. The cage is perhaps the nicest-looking stock ROPS to be fitted to a UTV. It is made of .095 wall HSLA steel, and is rumored to be SCORE and BITD race-legal by simply welding the bungs together. The six-point cage features a large roof crossbar and a V-shaped intrusion bar from the factory. Textron offers two accessory roofs- a plastic hard top and a 34 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

zippered soft top that features a convertible center section with a mesh screen. We would pick the soft top, as it allows more airflow in warm conditions while still providing shade. The full doors are smooth and comfortable, and they open and close easily. The top-mounted latches are sleeklooking, and the secondary interior latch makes getting out of the car a breeze. The top-mounted door latch may be an issue for muddy terrain, as it could clog up with gunk, but we haven’t been able to test the car in mud yet. The only caveat we found with the interior is the lower door frame crossbar. You have to step over a sizeable panel at the bottom of the door opening to get into the car, which covers a frame brace that adds a large amount of structural stability to the chassis. Once you get in and out of the car a few times, it becomes only a minor

bother. The tradeoff is the tightest-feeling, most rattle-free stock UTV we have ever driven. Even at speed in rough desert terrain, nothing in the car squeaks, rattles or shakes. LIVING WITH THE XX Textron and Speed put a lot of thought into making the Wildcat XX easier to service and repair than the other sport UTVs on the market. The plastic clutch cover uses a tool-less design, making belt access a breeze. The large, deep bed pan fits a 32 spare tire laid down flat, and has a builtin anchoring system for a spare tire and wheel. The accessory spare tire kit is one we would definitely spring for when buying an XX, as one spare fits any corner of the car. The hold-down system has a built-in lug

36 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

wrench as well, making tire changes a breeze and allowing the owner to carry less tools onboard. The bed pan itself is removable via four large plastic fasteners (think giant, flat wing nuts) that require no tools. Loosen the four anchors by hand, and the whole bed lifts out, granting easy access to the engine, airbox, oil tank, exhaust, and more. All that’s left are the fenders and rear fascia. The electronics are centrally located in a tidy compartment between the seats, which is accessible by removing one quarter-turn fastener by hand and lifting the lid off, just like in a YXZ. Here, you will find the battery, ECU, fuse boxes, and pre-wired accessory leads. A lot of noise and heat shielding has been implemented to make the car more

refined, which is well received when you’re jamming along a trail at 9,000+ RPM. Both the front and rear lower frame sections unbolt from the car and are replaceable in the event of damage. The entire front clip of the Wildcat XX can be replaced without cutting or welding the frame. They are extremely durable units, featuring steel skidpans underneath the factory full-coverage plastic skid plates. Certain key items in the Wildcat XX’s suspension and driveline system are multipurpose to make life easier for the owner, as well. For instance, the front and rear wheel bearings, hubs, brake calipers, brake rotors, and wheels are all the same. The rear trailing arms are the same part number, and can be used on either the left or the right side. This kind of manufacturing genius lessens the amount of part numbers a dealer or race team has to keep in stock for repairs, and allows the owner to carry all the spare parts he or she needs for racing without completely deflating their budget. The entire engine and transaxle can be removed with six bolts after removing the rear skidpan and disconnecting the fluid and electrical connections. Being able to easily pull the entire engine and transaxle assembly out of the car between races for servicing will greatly reduce the time and cost of freshening up a drivetrain mid-season.

limiters, you get the correct-length shock for the long travel kit. The rear shocks don’t even have to be resprung, as the leverage ratio doesn’t change. This will reduce the cost of a long travel kit for the XX by thousands of dollars! Bolt-on storage bags, window nets, spare tire carrier kits, mirrors, light bars, bumpers, and more will be available from the factory at launch day. Textron is also offering two dealer-optioned accessory upgrade kits bundled for savings. Our Wildcat XX was outfitted with: • Steel Front Bumper • 36-inch Light Bar • Black Aluminum Roof • Polycarbonate Half Windshield • Rear View Mirror • Roof Storage Bags • Rear Net • Trailside Kit • Polycarbonate Half Windshield • Rear View Mirror • Spare Tire

THE VERDICT While at the UTV Invasion event we met up with Textron and they were nice enough to loan us the Wildcat for the day. When we finally got the chance to slide in behind the wheel of the Wildcat XX, we had mixed expectations. It felt great to get back in the seat of ACCESSORIES the XX and we hoped that our first initial Textron is launching the Wildcat XX with thoughts of the newcomer were as we a host of available accessories and upgrades remembered. It’s as if the car boosts wheel travel to a staggering 22 inches doesn’t want to fire, and then explodes to front and rear. The stock shocks are built with life instantly. for. Shifting is slick and easy, with low range all the way back and high range one gate north of Low. Low-speed maneuverability is easy, edging out any fears of a boggy low end like the stock YXZ powerplant coupled with the manual transmission. Smooth CVT engagement and a noise-free driveline exude a feeling of quality from behind the wheel. There is no clunking as the driveline takes up slack from a standstill like you get in many other stock UTVs. Entering the dunes there is a long section of pretty decent set of whoops, a great start to our initial test. For us, after driving a few of Textron's biggest competitors it was just as we remember, smooth and comfortable with little drama. Right out of the hole you can definitely feel the need for a few more ponies as well as a good set of paddle tires, rather than the 30 CST Behemoth tire the 40 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

XX comes with stock. At 125 horsepower, the Wildcat XX is the most powerful naturally aspirated vehicle on the market. Compared to the 168hp Polaris RZR Turbo and the 172hp Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo, the XX may seem less than desirable for the dunes. While it does lack horsepower, the Wildcat will get you just about everywhere you want to go. On the larger dunes you will have a little planning to do to keep your momentum up especially when on group rides. If dunes are your thing, there are several companies that offer turbo upgrades for your XX that will give the other competion turbos a run for their money. For starting around $5,000, adding a Speedwerx turbo to the Wildcat will get you close to a RZR Turbo or a Can-Am X3. If you spend an additional $1,700 the XX will have a romping 200hp, edging out the competition and perfect for duners.

TEXTRON OFF ROAD WILDCAT XX As a dune machine, the fenders do get in your line of sight while cresting transitions, but the more you drive it the more you feel comfortable going all out. In stock form, the Textron Wildcat XX is a blast to drive in the dunes. We would say that this machine is a top performer in the whoops, no matter how deep while in stock form. If you add a long travel kit from Speed, we can only imagine how much fun the XX will be. Hopefully we will get a chance soon to test it out. As we mentioned, throwing on a set of paddle tires will make the Wildcat a very capable machine that will take anywhere you want to go and deliver more than enough excitement for the average duner. The steering ratio in the Wildcat XX is incredibly fast, and it makes for easy corrections at speed. Jamming through knee-deep whoop sections, you will really appreciate the strong power assist and quick ratio rack, as quick quarter-turn movements

bring the car in line perfectly if it starts to oversteer. Steering under braking is particularly impressive, thanks in part to the front-mounted rack lessening the deflection felt through the steering wheel as the tires claw for traction. The front suspension geometry and plentiful amounts of wheel travel make it feel nearly bottomless, even when stabbing the brake pedal in the bottom of a big G-out to scrub speed. This is a car that you can drive like a goon without being punished, and you won’t stop smiling behind the wheel. Shock tuning is tough for UTV manufacturers. There are many factors involved when deciding on a shock tune. Manufacturers must tune the car for a very wide variety of payload, terrain, driving skill, and cost factors. Sometimes, this leads to a vehicle with high-dollar shocks feeling less than stellar right out of the box. Further, CPSC and ROHVA testing sometimes limits

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 41

DUNE TEST

the suspension setups a manufacturer can offer out of the box, as the cars have to pass very specific testing regimens including J-turn and rollover safety tests. Usually, with a stock car, a new owner would be required to perform quite a bit of shock tuning to get the maximum comfort and performance out of a stock UTV shock. Not here. The XX tracks straight, flies flat, and handles like a dream, never feeling tippy or overworked. From a showroom-stock configuration, this car offers the best suspension compliance and comfort available currently. It’s not to say that the suspension as a whole is decidedly better than an XP or X3, just that the factory shock settings are in a league of their own compared to the other big two as far as comfort, compliance, and stability are concerned. This is an incredibly stable car, and it rewards the driver with a chassis that is more than up to the task of slamming through big holes without worrying about how the car is going to react. It’s predictable and controllable, and we reckon that it will outdrive just about any stock UTV on the market when the terrain gets REALLY rough. We can’t wait to pit the Wildcat XX against the RZR XP Turbo and Maverick X3 Turbo head to head to really find out. Textron did have a RZR XP1000 and a Maverick X3 64” model onhand for testing in a whoop section, but that limited test won’t tell the whole story. Throttle control is excellent, although the car doesn’t really feel fast until you bury the pedal. It’s as if Textron tuned the ECU to deliver small throttle openings until it sees anything close to wide-open throttle, and then it’s game on. In the desert, we were never left wanting for more power. In the dunes, however, it may be a different story, as we have become accustomed to highhorsepower turbo cars. An X3 Turbo R or XP 42 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Turbo will put lengths on the Wildcat XX by 50-60 mph. Thankfully, the aftermarket will have no trouble adapting YXZ forced induction kits to the Wildcat XX, and Textron is set to unveil a turbo car in the next couple of years. Speed is set to offer forced induction upgrade kits right away. FINAL THOUGHTS While the Textron Wildcat XX is posed to take the desert and trail market by storm. It is a great casual duner for those that are looking for a machine that can do everything well. It is priced $500 over the base RZR XP Turbo and the 120 horsepower version of the Can-Am Maverick X3, at $20,499. For the money, you're getting strength and elegance here. There are no extra frills or features over the Maverick or RZR (save for the pre-wired accessory leads), and it won't beat a RZR XP Turbo in a drag race. For the dunes, a Turbo Polaris RZR or Can-AM Maverick X3 will be a more logical choice, as the added power is advantageous. What a great age to be a UTV enthusiast. You really can’t go wrong with a modern sport UTV. The Yamaha YXZ1000R and 1000RSS offer the most driver-involved thrills you could ask for. The Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R is an incredibly stable and extremely fast terrain-devouring monster. The Polaris RZR XP Turbo is a corner-to-corner drag race machine, eating up any other stock UTV in its path with its powerhouse twin cylinder turbo engine. And now, the Textron Wildcat XX is the most poised, controllable stock sport UTV you can buy. Pick your poison, as you can’t go wrong with any of them. That being said, we will be spending as much time as possible with our Wildcat XX this year, as it redefines what a stock sport UTV should feel like right out of the box. -UTVOR

hen it comes to custom UTVs, it's no secret that we have featured many custom UTVs to show off what is possible for any UTV build. While some of the builds seem over the top, our thought is that while you may not be able to afford what is featured, our hope is that there are some items that you can afford for your build. This gives you a chance to actually see what the accessories look like installed on

your machine and get our take on the items. Jon Crowley from Shingle Springs, California wanted to build a capable UTV that could tackle a wide variety of terrain. Since he lives only a few hours from the famous Rubicon Trail and visits it frequently, Jon wanted to add some strength and functionality to his Can-Am X3 RC Turbo. His first outing with the X3 was in Sand Hallow State Park, where he determined that the RC was indeed a good rock crawler with the addition of Can-Am's new Smart-Lok front differential. The Can-Am X3 RC Turbo R was determined to be a good platform, so Jon set out to upgrade this unit with some beefier parts. The first item he added to the morethan-capable stock machine was suspension upgrades from No Limit RD out of Loomis, CA. The owner of No Limit, Phil Blurton, is a Can-Am racer (2017 Best in the Desert Champion) and builds products that have 50 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

been tested on his racecar. They added No Limit upper arms and high clearance lower A-arms, tie rods, front gusset kit and sway bar links. With the front end taking shape, they then attacked the rear with ZRP billet high-clearance radius rods and double shear rear knuckles. Now that the suspension was handled, they added a No Limit cage and tire carrier setup, all powder coated by Superior Powdercoat in Roseville, CA. No Limit did the

installation on the suspension and cage. With suspension and cage handled, Jon needed to add a few electronics, so he enlisted the help of Alpine UTV in Placerville, CA. Alpine UTV added 3.7-inch Mini Cannons from Vision X to the A-pillar, then a bunch of 1.7-inch Mini Solo Pods in blue for accent lights. Up on the roll cage, Buggy Whips supplied us with 4-foot blue LED whips. Helping to tie all the 12-volt wiring together, we got with UTVWiring.com and utilized their power distribution center. Next up, we added Rugged Radios RRP660 2-Person System with 60-Watt Car-2Car radio, Mac 3.2 two-person

helmet air blower with variable speed controller and Magellan TRX7 GPS. To make room in the dash for all of this, they added a Fourwerx carbon fiber dash. And to add a little more storage to the RC, we picked up a set of PRP X3 Door Bags. These attach to the stock doors with Velcro loops and install in moments. While most builds are outfitted with custom seats, Jon opted to keep the factory seats to keep the extra legroom that the X3 is known for. Rounding out the interior is a stronger

suede-wrapped steering wheel from NRG Innovations. The Dual Button is ergonomically designed with your thumbs reach for easy access. A quick release steering wheel adaptor, also from NRG, was added to help bring the steering wheel a little closer to the driver. We hooked up with Jon at St. Anthony dunes in Idaho to check out his latest build.

You're probably wondering why we would review an RC (Rock Crawler) edition at the dunes. Well, in our Jan/Feb Issue of UTV OffRoad Magazine we reviewed a stock Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC Turbo R at Sand Hollow, which has just as much rock crawling terrain as it does sand. Most of the products Jon has added so far have not made the RC more capable

in the rocks with the exception of the beefier front high-clearance arched lower A-arms. For this unit to perform better in the sand, Jon added a set of Walker Evans Racing Velocity shocks and Walker Links. The Velocity shocks have been tuned for desert and dune driving. They have come in handy over the factory Fox shocks while blasting through the whoop sections that are inevitable at just about any dunes. Out back, the “Walker Link” sway bar ends provide

some give in small chop where a swaybar would normally produce a harsher ride. Small side-to-side oscillations are dealt with completely before the swaybar comes into play by allowing the end links to soak up some of the movement. It’s a small part that makes a very big difference in feel. Next on the list in making this a capable machine for any terrain is none other than a set of 32" sand tires. The newly released Sand Sport SXS front sand tires feature

54 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

reversible bi-directional tread pattern that allows you the choice of climbing "pull" or front end stability for high speed carving. The rear paddle tires are made from a little softer rubber compound that is designed to reduce "paddle shock" on the clutches, axles and drive belts. The sand tires are wrapped around a good-looking set of Fuel Off-Road UTV Hardline - D910 Beadlock wheels. Of course with any beadlock wheel, the advantage is to lower the air pressure in the UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 55

tire to provide a wider footprint while on the sand. DRIVE TIME The RC utilizes the same geometry and power features as the Maverick X3 X RS Turbo, with an industry-leading 172 horsepower and gobs of torque out of the now notorious sounding triple cylinder Rotax engine. If you have never experienced this much power, just imagine running out of hill before you do power. To aid in hill climbing is the Sand Sports SXS tires that we previously mentioned. Not only will they help you get up the dunes, they will help you get there faster. This is all due to the bi-directional front tread pattern that once swapped to the more aggressive pattern the front tires will help pull you up the hill in a big way. We mounted the less aggressive side because we like a little less bit while cornering. While carving the dunes, the 172 horsepower is noticeable in helping you climb and stay on track. With the addition of the Sand Sports SXS tires the RC is more forgiving and you don’t have to plan your route so carefully. With a 72-inch width and 102-inch wheelbase, the X3 RC is a 56 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

foot longer than the Polaris RZR Turbo S, making transitions over razorback dunes less problematic. Suspensionwise, the addition of the Walker Evans Racing Velocity shocks has made the RC an incredible dune machine. It’s no secret that while driving in the dunes, the occasional G-out will come up fast. Depending on the time of day, you may not see them until it’s too late. The new Velocity Series coilover shocks offer the next step in performance and comfort for the Can-Am X3 RS and RC. The Velocity Series shocks have more controlled resistance than a standard piggyback or remote reservoir coilover. With the piggyback specifically positioned, these shocks offer higher resistance to bottoming out while allowing for a smoother, more compliant ride in the choppy bumps. As a vehicle that is built for any terrain with a few rock crawling specific upgrades, the Maverick X3 X RC Turbo R is an impressive dune machine. It has the power and suspension to keep you out of trouble as well as to keep the thrill level high. What could be more thrilling? More horsepower! Stay tuned…

olaris revealed the RZR XP 4 Turbo S at the 2018 Sand Sports Super Show with great acceptance to the new platform. There were a few companies that received their units early and built some amazing machines. The rest of the aftermarket companies could hardly wait to get a chance to build their own XP 4 Turbo S. In the list of companies that would receive the new unit was SDR Motorsports. After the SSSS Polaris challenged a few of the companies to build “something badass and to have it done in time for Camp RZR in Glamis at the end of October.

UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 61

With a short time period to get the build done, SDR set out to create one that was not their typical build. To get things rolling, Tim, owner of SDR, called on his go-to companies to get the job done. For paint duties, Tim contacted John from Mad Melvin Motorsports, one of the few companies that still paint UTV plastics. Together they picked some paint colors, which would be the base color for the build. Tim then contacted Wolf Designs (http://www.wolfdesigns.biz) to match the House of Kolor concoction they call Bass Boat Teal to wrap the rest of the RZR. Bass Boat Teal, if you could imagine, has a lot of metal mixed in with the paint. Wolf Designs was able to match the color; even the metal flake was matched. With the paint and graphics worked out, the SDR crew was working hard to finish fabrication. Tim decided on their popular 62 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Fastback Shorty Sport Cage with a front LED light pocket and rear chase light option. To keep the sides nice and clean, SDR added their best selling Hi-Bred door kit, complete with SDR storage bags on the inside of the doors. Keeping with the high quality and clean build this is turning into, Tim wanted to finish off the rear end with an aluminum

bed cover. The aluminum fabrication was handed over to Next Level Aluminum to have them work their magic on a custom rear bed cover with an opening trunk lid that seals and locks shut. Now that the exterior items were in the works, SDR turned their attention to the interior. First off was some comfort in the way of Simpson seats. SDR helped development and fitment of Simpson’s Pro Sport Seats, so adding a custom set would be a no brainer. In addition to the Simpson seat, they would also include their proven D3 harnesses. A custom machine like this was begging for some tunes. Tim contacted the UTV stereo gurus at SSV Works to see what they had for the new Turbo S. SSV is the leader in UTV sound systems, so they hooked SDR up with a Stage 5 plug and play stereo system and a module that works seamlessly with Polaris’ Ride Command system. This system allows the user to simply pair their phone with the Ride Command and control all functions right from the main screen. 64 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

The system allows the user to adjust the sound levels to fine tune the system on the fly. When stock products just won’t do, SDR reached out to Billet Equipped for some clean billet accessories. They sent out a billet horn cover plate, passenger grab handle, gas cap, and side mirrors all finished in a fine texture black powdercoat. If you’ve ever wired a UTV, you know it can be frustrating to say the least. SDR looked to XTC Power products for a full set of their switches and complete wire harness to get everything working. The XTC system is, simply put, a no brainer for wiring up your rig. The kit is one of the top products on the market. For late night runs through the dunes, SDR replaced the factory headlights for a Heretic Studio LED headlight kit to add some serious light. In addition to the headlights, they outfitted the top with a Heretic Studio 30" Wraith LED Light bar to flood the dunes with daylight vision. No build of this level is complete without some serious improvements to power, and SDR didn’t skimp out. They grabbed a full BoonDocker’s Dominator kit off the shelf and bolted it on. They added the dual exhaust system and sent the ECU file to the BoonDocker crew for a tune up. While they are massaging the ECU tune, SDR dialed in the clutching and UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 65

got the rest of the kit all buttoned up. They flashed the ECU and they were in business. If you’re going to dune a lot, a good set of sand tires should be on your list to get the most performance from your UTV. For this, they touched base with SandCraft to order their newly released 33’x16” Destroyer tire combo. SDR built this machine with performance in mind. From the superlight wheel and tire setup to the big turbo upgrade, they wanted this car to perform even better than it looks. Spending a few hours photographing Tess, we would say mission accomplished. While she wasn’t the fastest car up the hill or running down the drags, she was an expert duner. And most of all, during the entire weekend at Camp RZR in Glamis, she performed flawlessly. Throughout this hot weekend SDR had no issues at all, no overheating and no blown belts -- just pure fun! 66 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Helmets‌ there are a lot of options when it comes to protecting your valuable head. When we started twelve years ago, the most popular option for helmets was the MX style with the visor, and you needed to wear goggles. Most everyone here wore prescription glasses, so OTG (Over the Glasses) goggles were the way to go. That was until we started wearing full-face helmets. These helmets have a few benefits over the traditional MX-style helmet. They can be worn over glasses without any issues and they have a better field of vision. Bell Helmets, an industry leader in innovative head protection, has finally entered into the recreational UTV space with two new helmets; The Qualifier DLX Forced Air Helmet and the Qualifier Forced Air Helmet. Both helmets are designed, developed, and tested specifically for recreational UTV enthusiasts. “With the growing popularity of UTVs, we wanted to satisfy a need by providing these enthusiasts with the types of proven helmets that Bell has been synonymous with for nearly 65 years,” said Chris Sackett, Bell Helmets vice president. “Using our industry expertise and feedback from our ambassadors, we’ve developed something we are incredibly proud of and that we know consumers are going to love. We are excited about the future, as we continue to develop new products and incorporate our top-ofthe-line safety technologies into helmets for this category.” We received the new Qualifier DLX Forced Air Helmet that comes standard with a transitions shield. It offers clarity in low-light conditions and quickly darkens in brighter conditions, ensuring that riders will be able to adjust to randomly changing lighting conditions throughout the day. If you have transition glasses then you

already know the benefits. For us, this is one of the coolest benefits of the DLX. The included dust skirt is nothing new, but for us it’s another great benefit. We tested it in the sand and dirt, and if you have been roosted by the UTV in front of you, you will appreciate the tight seal around the shield and the dust skirt. No more sand or dust swirling up into your eyes. FEATURES • Contoured cheek pads • Force-flow ventilation system for cooling and comfort • Industry-leading five-year warranty • Integrated communication port accommodates Sena and Cardo bluetooth stereo headset and intercom systems • Integrated speaker pockets • Lightweight polycarbonate/ABS shell construction • Padded chin strap with D-ring closure • Padded wind collar drastically reduces wind and road noise • Removable/washable anti-bacterial interior • Transitions Adaptive ClickRelease Shield included • Transitions anti-fog and UV protection • Velocity Flow Ventilation™ system with FlowAdjust CERTIFICATION: DOT, ECE

ADVENTURE RALLY

PHOTOGRAPHY DON MCNEILLY

T

he 2018 CST SxS Adventure Rally presented by Yamaha was held at Sand Hollow State Park near Hurricane, Utah November 8-10, 2018. This was my first year attending the Rally, and if you have never been then I highly recommend putting it on your UTV Event Bucket list. This is a family-friendly event with guided trail rides that take you through some of coolest, craziest and technical rock crawling trails around. If you are new to rock crawling, there are less technical trails for beginners. If you want to try some tougher trails, they have great guides who will help you through the trail. Trails are rated easy, moderate and difficult so you can work your way up. For first-timers to the Sand Hollow State Park, they charge $10 a day use fee to enter the park. If you plan on going on any of the guided rides, you will need to register for the event at: https://www. sxsadventurerally.com. There are plenty

70 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

of open camping spots on the beach along the water. All general camping is $15 per night paid at the park when you enter. There are no primitive camping reservations. All reservations for the improved camping in the Sand Pit Campground must be done through the state park. There are other overnight options on the SXS Adventure Rally’s website. We arrived on Wednesday, November 7th and decided to dry camp by the water. If you're dry camping by the water, there are a few entrances into the area. Be sure to check for deep sand even if you have a 4WD vehicle. We helped pull a few vehicles out with our RZR XP Turbo S. Some were more stuck than others.

ABOVE: Plan B trail starts off with a sketchylooking climb, but all of our friends in the group made it up without any drama.

ABOVE: While we were setting up camp, a few kids had gotten themselves stuck. They had 4WD, but after hearing a loud clunking noise, we discovered that they had a front half shaft that was broken. After strapping their axle up, we pulled them to a camping spot. On the last day we pulled them to some hardpack where they could get themselves out. 72 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

ABOVE: As the sun was setting, this family also would get stuck. He went in the wrong entrance where the sand was deep. We tried to pull them out with a truck, but they were too buried to even budge the heavy combo. During the night, the husband dug out all the wheels in order to get some momentum going while getting pulled by a truck the next morning.

ABOVE: The difference between the Maverick Sport X RC and the Maverick X3 X RC is the width. The Sport RC is 64" wide and the Maverick X3 RC is 72". We could only get the Maverick X3 RC up the Chute on the Double Sammy trail. Width here on that particular day was our friend. LEFT: Our demo RZR XP 4 Turbo S popped a bead while on the Double Sammy Trail. We always carry a small air compressor, and yes, with 3 people it was enough to seat the bead.

While out crawling in our demo RZR XP 4 Turbo S, we found the benefits of a long wheelbase UTV as well as some negatives. Overall, the length was more advantageous with only a few areas that we got hung up on. The 72" width of the Turbo S is beneficial on all the trails we tackled.

A Can-Am Maverick Sport X RC came along on a ride, and we had the opportunity to check out its rock crawling prowess. While we didn't get a chance to get behind the wheel, as a viewer, it was pretty impressive and for sure received big marks for its ability to attack the trails.

When day turned to night, it was a great time to enjoy the stars and reflect on the day’s adventure. Our demo Turbo S is outfitted with SSV Works stereo, providing some tunes while we sat by the fire relaxing.

ABOVE: Camp Chef attended the Rally and brought out a few of their grills to cook breakfast for everyone who was up early enough. If you get a chance, check out their full line of grills that are built for camping. https://www.campchef.com

ABOVE: They also brought out a few of their brand-new Pursuit 20 Portable Pellet Grills. Powered by a Yamaha EF20000iS generator, we cooked up a few racks of ribs.

ABOVE: Along with all the great vendors, there was a raffle at the end of the event raffling off thousands of dollars worth of product. It's a great time for the whole family and friends to get together and wind down from a full day of riding. 80 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

The manufacturers were there with Yamaha and Can-Am providing demo rides for the participants. Roxor was there with their new vehicle and Textron Off Road had their newest Wildcat XX courtesy of D&P Performance. It was a great Rally and we look forward to next year's.
