YEARS AND YEARS

O

ver the years we have attended a plethora of rallies, races, events and trade shows to bring you, our readers, the latest and greatest UTV news in the industry. I have been to almost every new vehicle launch since 2006 and look forward to future models to come. I have driven thousands of miles testing the hottest, up-to-date vehicles from the manufacturers. And every one of those miles I completed with a smile. Okay, there where a few times that I was a little nervous, but it ended up as a great story afterwards. To toot my own horn, I have not destroyed any test vehicles at a manufacturer introduction. Back home testing our demo units, now that is a different story. I would say there have been a few instances where I would have received the Bonehead Award. But still, nothing was destroyed. There was one time that I did indeed do some damage to my own unit, but the only damage was to a few axles and my pride as all my media friends sat and watched. They also took some awesome photos of my lack of driving skills in that moment, so there’s that...

I've driven in just about all of the states in the great US of A from the sand, to the rocks, the desert, the mud, in the snow, in the rain, in the sunshine and in the shadows of the tight-wooded hills. I even had the rare opportunity to drive with our friends up north in Canada and down south in Mexico. I loved each and every trail that I have driven on, some technical and some showcasing some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen – memories that still live in my head. I look forward to new trails, new sites, and most of all new UTVs to share the experience with family and friends. The UTV is a miraculous vehicle which has taken me and my family to places that we would never venture to without its existence. I believe there are a good lot of people that also share my experience. For each and every new trail I drive on, I hope to see other people getting out with their UTVs. Who knows, maybe someday we will meet on the trail. I sure hope so. Troy Merrifield Editor-in-Chief troy@utvoffroadmag.com

RACINGNEWS POLARIS RZR RECORDS TWO CLASS WINS AT BAJA 500 RZR Factory Driver Craig Scanlon Wins Pro UTV Forced Induction; RZR Sponsored Athlete Kaden Wells Wins Pro UTV NA

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – For the third consecutive year, Polaris RZR® Factory Racing is triumphant at the SCORE Baja 500 with two class wins, including the Pro UTV Forced Induction class and an all-RZR podium in the Pro UTV NA class. After battling through the 483.9-mile course in Baja California, RZR Factory Driver Craig Scanlon secured the victory for the Pro UTV Forced Induction class. Scanlon was awarded first place, following a 10-minute penalty applied to competitor Jason Murray. In what was arguably one of the tightest finishes in Baja 500 history, Scanlon completed the single-loop race in just under 13 hours and 27 minutes. “I couldn’t be more excited for Craig and Scanlon Motorsports as this win really pays off all of the hard work, commitment and persistence he and his team have put into this sport,” said Kyle Duea, vice president of ORV Marketing at Polaris Industries. RZR Sponsored Athlete Kaden Wells took the victory in the Pro UTV NA class. With a time of 13 hours and 41 minutes, Wells shaved more than four hours from his 2018 finish. Joining Wells on the podium, and securing the RZR podium sweep, were RZR Factory Driver Kristen Matlock and RZR Sponsored Athlete Adrian Orellana, who finished second and third, respectively. “The Baja 500 is one of the most challenging races in all of offroad racing, and to see the success from our team of drivers is a huge testament to their preparation, dedication and determination,” said Duea. “Any win is significant, but to win at Baja is always extra special.” Polaris RZR Factory Racing has secured 19 wins and 40 podiums in the 2019 race series calendar.

TANNER GODFREY CLAIMS UTV WORLDRECORD JUMP IN POLARIS RZR XP TURBO

Semi-Paralyzed Athlete Sets New World Record for the Longest Jump in a Side-by-Side UTV

No stranger to pushing the limits and setting records, semiparalyzed extreme athlete Tanner Godfrey made history by jumping a Polaris RZR XP Turbo S over 240-feet on live television. The Memorial Day jump was part of the two-hour season finale of Discovery Channel’s hit show the Diesel Brothers. Godfrey reclaimed the world record for the longest jump ever made in a side-by-side UTV, soaring past the previous record of 223-feet. The event honored men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and military families at the historic decommissioned military base, Wendover Airfield outside Salt Lake City, Utah. “It’s evident I can fly better than I can walk,” said Godfrey after mastering the ramp. “When I took off, all I could think was hit it straight, hold on and hope for a clean landing. I can’t thank Discovery Channel, the Diesel Brothers and Polaris enough for the support.” The Diesel Brothers installed aftermarket parts and accessories to convert the stock RZR into a premium, longjumping machine. Godfrey’s RZR features HCR suspension, BFG KM3 tires, Sparco racing seat with harness system, and a SDR Motorsports roll cage. The new record jump final measurement of 247-feet was the first of multiple gravitydefying stunts featured during the two-hour live television show on Discovery Channel, which culminated with Heavy D jumping a Monster Truck over a flying airplane. In 2007, Godfrey fractured his T6 vertebra in a motorcycle accident. He was paralyzed from the sternum down. After years of physical therapy, Godfrey was able to regain strength in his legs and can now walk using canes. Now 29, Godfrey has a fun-loving, daredevil spirit where nothing holds him back. Godfrey first claimed the world record in 2013 with a 105-foot jump, then again in 2015 when he jumped 202-feet.

RACINGNEWS WEATHER HOLDS AS THE ANNUAL HOLLEY EFE CLASH AT CROSS BAR RANCH RACE TAKES OVER DAVIS, OKLAHOMA FOR THE THIRD YEAR Photos by Lindsey Fisher and Doug Dienelt

There's no denying that rapidly changing weather has been a constant for us over the years at the Holley EFI Clash at Cross Bar Ranch. Between flooding and chilly spells to tornadoes and long hot, sticky days we've pretty much seen it all. But this year, we were blessed by Mother Nature and the second race of the 4WP Eastern Series, the Holley EFI Clash at Cross Bar Ranch, went down without a hitch!

The Course: Set up similar to years' past, the course at Cross Bar Ranch consisted of a short course and two separate loops, one more of the desert variety and the other a bit more on the rocky side. While prerunning was allowed on Thursday and Friday before 2pm on the entirety of the course, Friday's qualifying sessions took place strictly on the short course, complete with sharp turns, sweeping berms, a handful of jumps, and two small water crossings. On Saturday, Can-Am Off-Road UTV competitors were required to hit each loop (Loop A – the 12.9-mile desert loop; and Loop B – the 11-mile mountainous loop) twice, completing the short course section between each loop. Limited Class competitors had varying loop configurations to complete when it came to their races. Spidertrax 4600 Stock Class drivers took on the desert loop twice and the rock loop once, hitting the short course in between loops. The Yukon Gear & Axle 4500 Modified Class and the Branik Motorsports 4800 Legends Class faced five laps total, including three desert laps and two rock laps with the short course starting each loop. Ultra4 4400 Unlimited Class competitors took on the most laps, with four desert laps and three rock laps, adding up to seven full loops with the short course a part of each.

16 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

Qualifying: Qualifying kicked off on Friday at 3pm, starting with the 4600 Stock Class vehicles. With six competitors in the class, lap times were all within 35 seconds of each other. In the end, John Schaefer in the 4688 car took secured the pole position and earned the KMC Hard Charger Award for the class with a qualifying time of 2 minutes and 28.279 seconds.

Following the Stock Class, the UTV Class took to the track, with 23 drivers battling it out for the top slot. Over a minute separated the fastest qualifier and the slowest, with Dustin Robbins in car number 311 throwing down the fastest qualifying time of 1 minute and 55.052 seconds, securing the pole position and the KMC Hard Charger designation for the class. Once the UTV Class was finished qualifying, the 4500 Modified and 4800 Legends class competitors lined up for their shots at securing the pole positions for Saturday's race in their respective classes. Only 13 seconds separated first and sixth in the 4500 Class while 18 seconds separated first and fourth in the 4800 Class. When all was said and done, Dan Fresh in the number 88 car secured the pole position and KMC Hard Charger designation for the 4500 Class with a qualifying time of 2 minutes and 9.107 seconds, while Casey Gilbert did the same in the 4800 Class with a qualifying time of 2 minutes and 6.318 seconds. Last but certainly not least, the Unlimited 4400 Class took to the track, with 22 competitors trying to lay down the fastest lap and secure the pole for Saturday's race. Just over 45 seconds separated the slowest and fastest lap times and when the top slots were calculated, it was Loren Healy who came out on top with a fastest lap time out of all of the classes of 1 minute and 54.599 seconds, just under half a second faster than Dustin Robbins' qualifying time in the UTV Class.

Friday's qualifying was followed by a mandatory drivers' meeting for all competitors taking the starting line on Saturday, and then the TRIBE 16/PSC Team Dinner.

UTV Race: The UTV race kicked off a full day of racing at 7am on Saturday. Having secured the pole position the day before, Dustin Robbins led the pack off the Start line.

Dan Fresh in the 88 car was also in a great position to run out front of the pack all race long in the 4500 Class, leading Jimmy Jack sometimes by just a few seconds, but putting in the work to ultimately take the checkers. Fresh had a relatively smooth go for all five race loops, allowing him to maintain his starting position and win the class by 4 and a half minutes. Following closely on Fresh's heels, Jimmy Jack took second place, followed by Jesse Oliver in third. Just like at many of our races, the biggest challenge went to the 4600 Class, as they raced nearly the exact same course as the more modified classes. This, however, didn't deter the competitors, as they pushed through the fast desert sections, rock obstacles and water crossings just like everyone else. Starting on the pole, John Schaefer in the 4688 car led the Stock Class for awhile before being passed by John Snell in the 4671 Car and Chris D'Auria in the 4677 Car. Fighting for the finish, all three top competitors completed their required three loops in under two hours, with Snell taking the checkers, followed by D'Auria 2 minutes later, and Schaefer rounding out the top three, crossing the finish line 3 minutes after D'Auria.

Unlimited 4400 Class Race: With four total loops to complete, competitors went through the first major S turn in the short course and then cut off to take on their first desert loop. While quick-paced and fairly flat, at least compared to the rockier Loop B, the first go at Loop A proved to be problematic for various reason for a handful of competitors, including Robbins. Out of the 21 UTVs that started, 17 made it through the first loop and went out for their second, the first go at the rocky Loop B, after a full trip around the short course. Loop B, the more mountainous loop, put drivers and cars alike to the test, with numerous hill climbs, multiple rock obstacles, miles of treeline track, and even some water crossings and a short creek crawl before the large Rock Face obstacle. While Mother Nature didn't add too much water and mud to the weekend, there was still plenty to be had thanks to the typical Oklahoma terrain. After finishing Loop B, UTV competitors once again returned to the short course before going out for their second time on Loop A. Wear and tear on some of the cars at this point in the race proved to be detrimental, taking out another five cars going into the final loop. In the end, nine competitors were able to complete all four loops of the race, with Cole Clark taking the checkered flag after physical first, Nathan Wolff, was disqualified following a post-race inspection. Rounding out second and third places were Bailey Campbell and Travis Zollinger.

Limited Classes Race: Next on the course were the Limited Class cars, with Casey Gilbert leading the charge. Sitting on the pole from qualifying on Friday, Gilbert was in a great position to continue his winning streak for the season in Oklahoma. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on Casey's side as mechanical failure knocked him down a lap behind the leaders. While Casey was down for a bit, he was able to return his car to working order and pull out a second-place finish behind the 4800 Class winner, Trevor Fults, the only competitor to complete all five loops of the race. Rounding out the 4800 Class podium was Randal Holmes.

Once the Limited Class race was complete and those team's vehicles unfortunate enough to finish their race on the side of the course were moved so as not to interfere with race traffic, the Unlimited Class race kicked off at 1pm. First off the line to take on seven total loops was Loren Healy. While Loren was first out of the gate, it wasn't long before competitors like JP Gomez, Shannon Campbell and fellow Fun-Haver, Vaughn Gittin Jr. were biting on Loren's heels on the first desert loop. By the time they were tackling their first rocky Loop B, mechanical issues had taken Loren's lead and moved him back in the pack to eventually finish 17th, completing just two loops. After passing his fellow Fun-Haver early on, Vaughn Gittin Jr. physically lead the field for a number of laps, constantly battling both Campbell and JP Gomez as Derek West and Josh Blyler made up time, moving from ninth (West) and seventh (Blyler) off the line to the top of the pack on corrected time. While many top guys in the sport started the race, a number of them suffered mechanical issues, leading to their early retirement from the competition. These included Alex Wacker, who retired after just taking a start due to a blown motor; Paul Horschel, who ripped a rear axle from under the car in the first rock loop; and Levi Shirley, who, after his first loop had made up enough time to be in first on corrected time, was struck by some bad luck with a steering failure and tire blowout resulting in the rear hub assembly being torn off of his car on his second desert loop. As they say, racing is only so much about preparedness, practice and skill. There's certainly a portion that is pure luck and good fortune. Filled with heavy hitters, the 4400 Class race proved to be the fastest of the day, with the top six competitors completing all seven required laps in under three hours. In the end, it was East-Coaster Derek West who put down the fastest time and took the top spot on the podium, followed by Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Josh Blyler – making for a Nitto sweep! RACINGNEWS AZOP Racers Take Over Prescott Valley for Massive Memorial Day Weekend Grand Prix Biggest race of the year brings nearly 400 off-road vehicles to the center of Prescott Valley 2019 AZOP Rowley White RV Series, Round 5, Prescott, AZ May 25-26, 2019 Written by: Miller Truby All images Š: Miller Truby Off-road racing - like most forms of motorsport - is intended to be a spectacle, with talented drivers coaxing incredible machines through often unthinkable terrain; on paper it should be just as much fun for those watching as it is for those competing. Unfortunately the nature of these contests means that most off-road races are seen in tiny glimpses from spectator areas near the pits, or wherever the racecourse comes in close contact with public roads. With tracks that are often massive and remote, the bulk of most off-road racing action takes place outside the view of everyone except the racers themselves, the support crews, and a few lucky media members. But not so with round 5 of AZOP’s Rowley White RV Series in Prescott Valley on the long Memorial Day weekend! With a race course built each year from scratch in an empty field near the center of town, the event - which was presented this year by Summit Jeep and Dragonfire Racing - provides excellent viewing opportunities for anyone and everyone. Mere steps from commercial shopping districts and city buildings and bounded by major roads and intersections the action drew in both avid fans of the sport as well as curious onlookers. As has been the case for the last several years, the race promoters worked with the town of Prescott to advertise the event and sought out a long list of sponsors who provided cash payouts for more than half of the race classes, which in turn drew a huge turnout of competitors. The 3-mile course put together in the week prior to the race by AZOP took advantage of the flat terrain by providing a variety of different corner shapes and styles punctuated by different sized tabletops, kickers, and an endurocross style tire-jump section. The layout was simple enough that the novice classes could negotiate it safely, but provided ample opportunities for the pro and expert classes to get creative in how they approached the different sections. As a result the racing was competitive and close all weekend, with very few blowout wins and several races coming down to the last few corners. f you have ever visited RZRForums.net, chances are you have seen the screen name FJK. As a longtime forum administrator, Frank Keene has finished his fourth Turbo Lady series of builds. Forum members followed along as Frank completed each stage of the build. The first Turbo Lady (named by forum members) started back in 2009 with a Polaris RZR-S 800. The RZR was equipped with an MCX Turbo air-to-water turbo. With the RZR series name set, the next tradition is that each car in the series will have a blue theme. We met up with Frank at Camp RZR in Glamis, CA for the introduction to his fourth Turbo Lady and what we think is the best one. Turbo Lady started off as a blue 2019 Polaris Turbo RZR-S. Since the RZR already had Frank's favorite color blue, it was only fitting that he would continue the theme. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 21

FIRST LOOK

TALON1000X-4 HONDA

The Honda Talon grows a back seat

When Honda announced a sport side-byside, the industry and folks like you and me, all had the same few thoughts. One, we all can agree that it’s a little late. Polaris, CanAm, Yamaha and Arctic Cat (or whatever they’re being called this week) have all had sport machines out for some time. Honda is a conservative company, but a company with such a rich heritage in going really fast should have been leading from the start, not playing catch up. Secondly, we knew from past experience that with the machine being a Honda, the quality and attention 26 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

to detail were going to be first rate. Let’s face it, a company doesn’t get such a strong die-hard fan base by making lemons. Lastly, we were all very well aware of one overwhelming notion – we could not wait to drive one. The Talon has not disappointed. Two initial versions of the machine offer up some great fun, amazing handling and solid, Honda-like details. The Talon 1000X and Talon 1000R are powerful and fun. But like the Yamaha YXZ and TextCatTrackertron Wildcat XX, there’s only room for two. With

2020 HONDA TALON 1000X-4 Honda promoting their new slogan of Life is Better Side-by-Side, it’d be nice to see them jump in with a multi-passenger Talon, right? Unlike some companies, we didn’t have to wait. Before some dealerships even had the

TWO BY FOUR There are actually two versions of the Talon 1000X-4. The standard version has Fox Podium 2.0 shocks with QS3 3-position adjusters mounted on the reservoir. The front rides on dual wishbone A-arms and has 14.6 inches of travel. The rear system is a 3-link trailing arm design with 15-inches of the travel. It’s a smooth ride and if you’re into moderately paced driving and trails, this is a sweet setup. For more aggressive drivers and terrain, Honda wanted to do something special. inputs from the machine and programming from the factory. So no, you don’t get to adjust the controls in the Honda like you do in the other machine with Live Valve shocks. Even though Honda has yet to officially announce pricing, I’d bet there’s a difference between this machine MSRP and the competition in the Live Valve shock market. You do get Launch Mode, which helps control the suspension for optimal traction when you want sudden acceleration. This is a carry over from the motocross world where Launch Mode on MX bikes helps push the bike down to force better bite at the start and quicker straight-line acceleration. With both machines having great suspension, the only other difference, beside that pesky price tag, is the color options. STADIUM SEATING One of the things that bugs backseat riders sometimes is that they can’t see the same

as those sitting up front. It used to be that if anyone in the backseat complained, you’re only options were to either move back there yourself and let them drive, which I don’t know about you, but, uh, no. You can always tell them to suck it up and buy their own machine, which my wife says was horribly rude and why those friends don’t come over much anymore. And if it’s the kids, you just tell them to “Suck it up, buttercup. Don’t make me come back there. I’ll do it too!” Thankfully Honda is saving friendships, and legal fees by providing the Talon 1000X-4 with stadium seating. The back seats are almost three inches higher than the front seats and almost two inches closer together. That doesn’t seem like a lot on paper, but in the machine, it makes a huge difference. The backseat passengers can see around and get a good view of the trail ahead. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. And the Talon comes with very comfortable

And low range first gear is low enough, making it a crawler’s delight. The Talon 1000X-4 also has Honda’s i4WD system with intelligent automatic locking differentials for maximum traction. We’ve played with this in the two-seater and the Pioneer and it works great. It instantly senses the traction needs for the situation and adjusts the differentials accordingly. We saw it, some of us even got to go for a quick spin, but they only had a couple machines ready. They also showed us that, while the Talon doesn’t come with a turbo, like the Yamaha YXZ, it is now set up to add one at the dealership should you so choose. Yeah, I have to smile when I type that because it makes me a little giddy. We’ll keep you posted as to when you can expect to see these machines at your local dealerships, and how they handle when we get behind the wheel. Until then, good riding.

Moab is truly one of the most spectacular places in the world. If you have visited there, chances are you feel the same. To prove to your family and friends, you probably took many pictures and videos capturing the beauty you experienced around each corner. And as a bonus, you can't take a bad photo in Moab. There is alluring scenery 360ยบ around you begging for you to experience more. Every year hundreds of UTV enthusiasts take part in the event appropriately named "Rally on the Rocks." This is the 9th year for the Rally, and it continues to get larger each year for attendees and industry vendors.

MOAB, UTAH

If you have never attended Rally on the Rocks, you will want to visit their website at www.rallyontherocks. com. Their website has everything you want to know for rookies. Looking for a place to stay? Want to know how difficult trails are? It's all there and more. The event headquarters are at the Spanish Trail Arena located south of Moab on HWY 191 (3641 S HWY 191, Moab, Utah 84532). The arena is the ideal place to host the event with plenty of room for vendors, inside and out, and parking for UTV enthusiasts. When the event first started, the vendors occupied the inside of the arena. As the event has gained popularity, the vendors now overflow just outside of the arena and into the large parking lot. With a wide variety of companies selling products, you can pretty much find anything you want to purchase for your UTV. If not, this gives you the opportunity to talk directly to the vendors to get what you are looking for. Most vendors have pretty good discounts on products, so if there is something you have been wanting to buy, you might want to wait for the Rally. Top purchases are wheels and tires, skid plates, and maybe axles UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 35

after getting in from one of the many tough trails in Moab. If you have been to Moab and Rally on the Rocks, chances are you have heard of the many trails that it offers. Every year we like to get out and experience one of the trails that the Rally has on their list, and we also like to go outside that list and experience some completely different trails. This year we took on the trail "Cliffhanger" that we have been on many times in the past. It's one trail that never disappoints. It has a nice variety of technical obstacles that stay relatively the same each time. The only thing that changes for us is that we always have a different vehicle that we are 36 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

testing. This year we brought out our Polaris RZR XP 4 Turbo S. We rode along with David Uptain from RZR Life (an informative Facebook page), and everyone’s favorite redneck Huber Rolland, Pastrana Land’s very own mechanic. Also along on the ride was Carey Steiner, who has over 30 years of offroad experience. Cliffhanger is more than just fun technical obstacles, it also has great views and wonderful rock formations around each corner. Even the drive to the trail head does not disappoint. Cliffhanger is unique in that it is not a loop trail. There is one way up and one way down, so each obstacle you get to do twice with only a few that give you a challenge both ways. At the very end of the trail you are rewarded with a magnificent view of a valley that goes on for miles. In that moment, you forget every challenge that got you there. On the way back, you get to try your driving skills on the obstacle "Cliffhanger" for which the trail was named. I will confess, that day I was having an unusually difficult time getting over Cliffhanger. After many attempts I finally climbed on over. At the end of the trail when we were just about out, we decided to help an MX guy push and pull his bike out on the shelf obstacle at the bottom of the hill with David's RZR. Just as the bike was over the obstacle, Hubert slipped and dislocated his shoulder. He was in killer pain. He walked up to the road and some nice guy offered to take him to the hospital. We met up with him later at the hospital after his shoulder was back in place, an interesting end of what was a great day of wheeling. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 39

Can-Am Pushes the Envelope with 2020 UTVs

Every year, Can-AM and Polaris push each other with machines that get more and more extreme. Some might say that it is ridiculous, but we hush them and tell them there is no need for that kind of negativity around here. At the top of the fight card are the Polaris RZR versus the Can-Am Maverick lines and seeing who’s going to do what next is just too much fun, especially if you like horsepower and all that other glorious stuff. While the new Polaris models for 2020 aren’t here just yet, the 2020 CanAm machines are out now and if you’re not at least a little excited about what the Canadian company is doing, there is something seriously wrong with you. 195 That is an important number this year. 195, as in, the flagship Can-Am Maverick Turbo 42 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

X3 RR models make 195 horsepower. A hundred and ninety-freaking-five! Stock. Right off the showroom floor. Remember when 100 horsepower was a HUGE deal? New RR lineup includes a standard X3, an X3 MAX, as well as their MR and RC specialty machines designed for mud running and rock crawling. Can-Am added new suspension settings and revised internals for smoother rides, and added new 15-inch cast wheels for better performance in braking and clearance. The company revised and streamlined the chassis and ROPS system to make it safer, stronger and lighter and new transmission settings eliminate the lag traditionally found in turbo-powered machines. The Maverick X3 machines also get an all-new 7.6-inch multifunctional digital display that has all of your machine’s

2020 CAN-AM LINE UP information within easy reach, And it’s glove-touch compatible. The X3s are really a highly-evolved lineup of extreme sport side-by-sides that are made to go fast over every condition you can get yourself into,

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE When Can-Am came out with the X3, it was the top of the crop of Maverick machines. Then they started releasing new machines under the Maverick banner, replacing the original Maverick with a greatly improved line that had closer ties to the X3 than the original. First up was the Maverick Trail, a 50-inch wide trail machine that returns for 2020 and it revived a market segment for extremely capable SxSs that meet the 50inch requirement for select trail systems. For 2020, the machines get some new colors, but fall into the, “If it ain’t broke…” area.

and if you’re rocking one of the RR rides with the 195 horsepower, you’ve got more than enough power to throw down with anything. Man it’s a great time to be an enthusiast.

The Maverick Sport came out and was the final machine to replace the older existing machines. The Sport, which has won awards from several outlets, and is a favorite around here as well, is, at its base, a 60-inch machine with two 1000-class engine options, one 75hp and the one we prefer, the 100hp machine that brings a lot of smiles for the price. Can-Am knew they were on to something and came out with wider-64-inch special editions in the Sport X MR and Sport X RC, both getting a wider stance, improved suspension and the Smart-Lok front differential that adapts to the conditions. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 43

FIRST LOOK

These machines are geared at mud, with X MR and rock crawling with the X RC. We’ve fallen in love with the X RC and find it to be a fun, agile rock crawler that is nearly perfect for a lot of different terrain. Can-Am added a new edition of the Maverick Sport for 2020 – the Sport X XC. This machine takes the 64-inch stance of the MR and RC models, and also adds the Smart-Lok traction control, with different mapping to optimize the traction capability for serious crosscountry driving. It also comes with added protection with beefier bumpers, and bead-lock 14-inch aluminum rims. The X XC also adds the 7.6-inch digital display from the new X3 models and new LED headlights. We cannot wait to get out hands on one of these machines to see just how well it tackles the off road world. We’re pretty sure we’re going to dig it. The Maverick Sport MAX DPS returns as well, and this popular 4-seat machine is doing well enough in the market that we’re

2020 CAN-AM LINE UP

pretty sure it is only a matter of time before we see a few of the special edition models add a back seat too. Pretty exciting time to be a Can-Am fan. DEFENDER LOVE When Can-Am released the Defender to take on the mighty Polaris Ranger, they did pretty well right out of the gate. There were some innovations that Polaris needed to catch up

FIRST LOOK

with and for 2020, Can-Am keep on rolling. The most exciting addition to the line is the beastly new Defender 6x6 DPS. This machine has the 82hp 976cc Rotax V-twin with iTC digital throttle control, electronic hill decent and all the other goodies you’d expect from a Defender. But, yeah, there’s a whole second set of rear drive wheels. Operating on their arched rear TTA independent suspension, this machine will hammer ANY terrain. You have the choice to go from all four rear wheels driving to adding the front two for true six-wheel drive! This thing is going to rule the soft terrain. Add to this the extended cargo bed that has, are you ready for this, 72-inches of cargo space length. Yeah, it’s the same size as many compact pickup trucks. Bigger even than some! This machine screams out to us for an adventure build, and we might just have to see if Can-Am will let us do that. The rest of the Can-Am Defender line returns for 2020, including the Performance model, and the MR mud machines. CanAm refined the lineup to boost overall performance and reliability, two areas the company has been doing well in for a long time. 46 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

2020 CAN-AM LINE UP

COMMANDER Yes, the Commander is still part of the CanAm 2020 lineup. The machines are getting a little long in the tooth, but it has a really strong following. Dealers will say that they still sell Commanders, and that they seem to be quite popular with a more older demographic. With the continued popularity of the Polaris General, and some new models coming from other competitors, we’d have to guess it is only a matter of time before we see something really new and cool from the Commander line. We like the machine a lot, ourselves. The bed is really cool and it can be a hoot and a half to drive. Time will tell.

SSV WORKS 5 SPEAKER SYSTEM www.ssvworks.com PRICE: $1973.85

The 10" subwoofer glovebox SSV Works enclosure replaces your current glovebox housing. It leaves just enough room for your Polaris factory toolkit.

Music. We play in the car on the way to work, we play it at work, and we play it in our homes. Why not play it when you’re off-roading. To make that happen, look to SSV Works, the market leader in off-road audio systems and accessories. They make systems for just about every UTV on the market, but we are here to talk about the latest and greatest 5 Speaker System for Polaris Ride Command. When you’ve got highly advanced electronics like the Polaris Ride Command system, integrating more electronics (like an audio system) and making it all play nice together can be a challenge. Fortunately for the end user, installation of the new SSV Works Ride Command integration audio kit couldn’t be simpler. The kit is 100% plug and play, meaning there’s no cutting, soldering, 52 UTVOFFROADMAG.COM

crimping or rewiring necessary. This system features the best of SSV Works to bring your side-by-side the cleanest, loudest and most powerful powersports audio system available... plus, it’s easy to install so you spend more time riding and less time wrenching. Each kit comes pre-loaded with SSV Works speakers, subwoofers and amp. The kit significantly improves upon the factory Ride Command Audio system thanks to four 6.5-inch speakers and a 10" glove box enclosed sub woofer. Because the system is designed for seamless integration, it works with virtually any factory replacement aftermarket components, like the SDR Motorsports cage, doors, roof, roof rack and spare tire carrier. The speaker pods are not merely repurposed marine speakers but are purpose built for powersports applications.

The SSV Works cage mount speaker pods with 6.5" speakers can be mounted to just about anything. SSV Works front kick panel speaker pods with 6.5" speakers are tucked up enough without getting in your way.

The cage mount pods fit cleanly inside the roll cage without taking up excessive room or requiring extra modification. The complete system includes: • SSV Works front kick panel speaker pods with 6.5" speakers • SSV Works cage mount speaker pods with 6.5" speakers • 10" subwoofer glovebox SSV Works enclosure • Direct-Fit amp mounting system with amplifier • Plug-&-Play harness, wiring and cables for Factory Polaris Ride Command Systems. We’ve been driving around for 9 months in our RZR XP 4Turbo S with our SSV Works stereo, and we wonder how we lived with out it. The sound is crisp, and

the bass is thumping, even while driving with our helmets on. It combines our two favorite pastimes, off-roading and music. The front kick panel speaker pods are perfectly positioned, directing the sound up to the occupants, and the cage mount speaker pods further push the sound into your ears from behind. The system integrates so well with the Polaris Ride Command, which is something no other company has been able to figure out. The system is easy to install. The toughest part is running the speaker wires, but SSV Works has excellent instructions so it won’t leave you feeling lost. Overall, if you are looking to upgrade your UTV and make some noise, check out SSV Works for any UTV application you are looking for. You won’t be disappointed. UTV OFF-ROAD MAGAZINE 53

STI TIRE AND WHEEL 35 INCH CHICANE

All-New 35-Inch Chicane Busts Out with Larger, Lighter Design The all-new 35-inch STI Chicane tire is light weight, designed for 15-inch wheels, and provides UTV drivers with legendary handling performance and durability. An all-new 8-ply carcass gives outstanding bump absorption, ground-hugging tread and sidewall flex, and a smooth ride. This new Chicane features a light-truck-inspired flatter profile and shoulder design, while incorporating the open-channel tread pattern of the original Chicane. With its wider contact patch, the new tire delivers sure-footed control in all terrain conditions. Like all Chicane tires, the new 35 uses a deep rim guard and a reinforced bead/lower sidewall that allows lower PSI operation. The result is maximum tire performance and durability over a variety of terrain, without running overly high PSI to avoid flats. These tires retail for $264, and are available now at powersports dealers throughout North America.
