It took eight years of work and not less than thirty trips for Salgado to compose its “Genesis”. 245 pictures which results from his work are presented at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and take us on a grand tour of the world in black and white. Back to the beginning. Dive into the heart of Eden. Reveal the genesis of a world damaged by mankind. Remind the sense of the word “nature”. Here are the words of Brazilian photographer Salgado’s in Genesis. Organized into five volume (“the borders of the South”, “natural sanctuaries”, “Africa”, “Northern Land”, “Amazonia and Pantanal”), the course reveals the show often forgotten that we have been offered by our planet. Wanick Lelia Salgado, thewife of the photographer and curator of the exhibition says “This exhibition presents landscapes, animals and people who knew how to escape the modern world. It celebrates the vast and remote areas where nature still reigns in all its majesty.” More than just the movement or the famous decisive moment, the photographer chose silence and stillness, as if to reinforce the greatness of nature. On the menu, penguins and sea lions on the land of Antarctica, whales of South Atlantic, elephants and lions in Africa, but also nomadic from Sudan, unknown Amazonian tribes or simply giant iceberg, amazing canyon or just the vastness of a desert. Treasures still intact… but for how long? Through this hymn to the beauty of the artist does not point out the lack of threats to the Earth. Laure de Régloix

The Orangerie Museum will highlight the exclusive relationship of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in a retrospective dedicated to the most legendary couple of artists of the twentieth century. Great exhibition not to be missed, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, inseparable duo, meet up on the Orangerie’s walls. Met in Mexico in 1928, they became quickly inseparable, (separated only for a year) and they got married the year. Such an ode to the eternal love, the Orangerie Museum dedicates this double retrospective highlighting their symbiosis. With this parallel structure, staged by musée de l’Orangerie in collaboration with Dolorès Olmedo de Mexico museo, the exhibition provides a better glimpse of their artistic universe, both different and complementary, but also and on top of it this visceral attachment to their Mexican earth: cycle of life and death, religion and revolution, realism and mysticism, workers and peasants. This exhibition is a true immersion in their universe; marked with communism, revolution and desire for freedom, the Orangerie Museum will offer you many workshops about the exhibition. Theatrical performances, reading, cinema evenings and dramatised tours based on the personal diary of Frida Kahlo, the Orangerie involves you into an initiatory travel to meet these two painters from October to December.

“I’ve rarely seen such a terrifying movie, as well as Psycho and Seven. Prisoners is as strong as them. One of the scariest movies of all time.” This kind of statement excites all the senses especially when the tweet is signed by William Friedkin, the father of The Exorcist. The return of the great visceral thriller orchestrated by a Quebecker with Wolverine as a headlining performer. An occasion to study this surprising association with impressions of the two protagonist keys. The masterly success of Prisoners – Mr Friedkin was actually quite right – is surprising as the project looked like others which have failed in the past. The story of a young foreign director revealed to the world through a strong work – Incendies (Fire) and his nomination for Oscar of best foreign film – who will fly too close to the sun facing his Hollywood dream. A too often known equation but which Prisoners does not match at all. In an almost jovial way, Denis Villeneuve admits: “I never thought that one day I will make a film in the USA. Shooting a movie over there was above all fantasy. This gave me opportunity to meet some artists I would never had the chance to meet in shooting in Montreal. I was ready to play the game for once. I needed to realize on site if all the horror stories I heard about Hollywood, were true. I was afraid to do it but on the other hand I thought it was good to get out of my comfort zone. I really wanted to put myself in danger. I went there to have the opportunity to learn with masters and at worst I would have gone home but in discovering another way of work.” The author – revealed in Cannes in 1998 in the section Un certain regard with Un 32 août sur terre – had always signed his movies’ scripts. To only see him behind the camera for Prisoners could let us think he was trying a new experience and leave behind his copyright ambitions. However, Denis Villeneuve contradicts himself: “I draw your attention on the fact that I choose to meet people from a production company that had the reputation for taking care of their filmmakers.” Indeed, they kept their promises. They protected my identity and never tried to control me. I always wrote my movies in Quebec because I have never met any scriptwriters able to write something that pleases to me. We often criticize Americans and their movies, but their scripts are honestly very good. I have read many scenarios but this is the scenario of Prisoners which really interested me the most. The story made myself feel anxious and scared. I loved it but I left it on a side thinking I could never do it. 10 months later, I still

thought about it and I called my agent to find out where was the project. The producers wanted to meet me. I thought that I wanted to live at least once the experience to face to 12 executives. At such meetings, there are so many people in front of you that you’re obliged to make with your head a sign to see them all. I really wanted to see if it was as I thought. Et surprisingly, they have all wanted to work with me even if I put my limits straight away: “You want to make the movie I want to make. You came to pick me up because you liked “Incendies”. If you want to go this way, I’ll be happy to do it. However if you’re looking for someone to be at your disposal, forget me, there are more than 3,000 people in Los Angeles that could do it and they would do it better than me. I have been very strict regarding the direction I wanted to take. They promised and they actually hold their engagement.” We must say that to convince, Denis Villeneuve had an ally in the person of Hugh Jackman. The Australian actor, recently nominated for an Oscar for best actor for Les Misérables, greatly appreciates the Quebec director: “The only thing I saw from Denis Villeneuve, was Incendies. When I heard that the producers of Prisoners wanted to hire him, I went to the meeting, but I already knew that I was going to say yes to the movie. I did not tell him at first, but his presence convinced me to be part of the adventure. This was one of the best decisions of my life. My instinct did not deceive me. Denis was exactly the filmmaker we needed. He had this ability to mix drama and thriller. And that’s why the film is such a success. The story is exciting; it makes you ask questions during but also after while maintaining a real tension and suspense around the investigation. The combination is very exciting.” By choosing to involve on this time trial of a father ready for anything to make speaking the person suspected of having kidnapped his daughter, Hugh Jackman shows another facet of his acting talents. A situation that the actor claims vigorously: “I am constantly trying to interpret different characters from each other. I know how much I’m famous because of Wolverine. Besides, I’m still so amazed to have had this role. It was a great bonus for my career and I loved playing him. But I need and want to go in other directions also. The character I play in Prisoners satisfies this need. I liked the deeply human side of Keller. Personally, I am a moderated person. In all situations. When I go out drinking glasses, I just take a few. While Keller is a former alcoholic, he is very religious; he is a survivor with an extreme behavior. He has so many demons and fears buried deep inside him. To see

him trying to control them as much as possible is something really heartbreaking and it was a real challenge to personify his character.” Difficult then not to ask the actor if he had thought about the way he would have act instead of his character: “Most of the film was too brutal and too hard emotionally for me to identify myself. I had to do some research and meet real families who have experienced these tragedies, and that was more than enough for me. For torture’s scenes, it was actually very hard. I imagined doing this to someone. Even though my character has legitimate doubts about the person he is torturing. He is convinced that the young man knows something. So in the end, I understood how Keller felt. I personally doubt if I would go so far but I’m sure my wife would do (smile).” A joke which reminds us that we are in presence of an extreme work in the Hollywood context. If Prisoners has the dramatic resources of a thriller with a lot specificities of the field (the famous mystery about the identity of the culprit that Villeneuve keeps almost till the end), it is way more complex than a simple movie of revenge. It concerns painful questions about American society while extending the dark questions of the filmmaker on the human soul. A kind of UFO in Los Angeles whose success at the US box office greatly pleased its lead actor: “Prisoners plays with classic archetypes of the hero. It goes further and pushes the boundaries of the genre. I am glad that people go to see and even more than the studios realize that it is possible to go further and push the audience to think a little more.” This is maybe a new era that now begin thanks to a curious Quebecker’s curiosity, who may have given a way to another burst of intelligent and memorable thrillers. With its two volcanos summit high of 4,000 m, Big Island offers a double face full of contrasts and colors for tourists who wish to discover Hawaii instead of just lying on a beautiful white sand beach… ‘U’ DESTINATION

You will reach Hawaii by the Honolulu airport, main entrance and favorite way out of this archipelago whose mere mention makes eyes sparkle. Aloha! Sounds like a name on a postal card, with the postal card landscape. In fact, a postal card, simply! However, you will only stay there for a few hours. Not happy? Well… In this case I allow you to take a little break at Waikiki Beach, in order to flirt with a taste of paradise, hoping that the presence of the towers-hotels on the beach will not alter your pleasure. Pearl Harbor’s visit, boat trip, surf session, paddle, stroll in a bark, shopping, and some more! You’ll have so much choice to spend your days. Because honestly, clear and turquoise water, sun and coconuts, this is so overrated! You could find that everywhere else! However, a still active volcano, a summit where you can hug stars and tropical forests… All these things in only one place, this is already much more rare! BIG ISLAND HERE WE ARE! Back to Honolulu’s airport for your domestic’s flights – you can only jump from island to island with small airplanes, boats are only reserved for cruises and tour operator. Let’s go to Hilo, on the North-West coast of Big Island, also called Hawaii. As its name suggests it, this is, by far, the largest island of the archipelago which counts 137, distributed over a backbone out of water, consequences of a deep and intense volcano activity at the origin of its existence. Thus Big Island, Oahu (that you just left), Mauai, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau – best known – are the emerged parts of huge basaltic volcanoes. During this short flight, with a bit of luck, you will be window side and could observe this unique island. Instantly a detail will jump at you: the island seems literally cut in half. Aridity, blackness and desolation on the West side, luxuriance, greenery and humidity on the East side. And in the middle, not a river, but several curved peaks gripping the clouds like a Velcro strip. “BEYOND CONFINES OF STARRY SPHERES” Among them, central and imperial, Mauna Kea, the highest point of the island. A myth for amateurs of astronomy and starry nights. Perched over 4,200 meters, swept by winds able to mess up hair of a bald, this volcano almost extinct, guarantee a breathtaking spectacle at nightfall. It is not a coincidence if several international observatories are settled there. After having seen the sun bowing above the clouds and rubing along with the ridges of reddish cones surrounding, the layman is invited to go to the visitor center at Onizuka

up to 2,800 m for a guided tour of the Milky Way, telescope included. Amazement guaranteed facing this magnificence and unusual celestial spectacle for us who hardly see the Moon, drowned in the luminous pollution of our cities too illuminated. THE GREEN ISLAND The Mauna Kea (snowing in winter and offering to the most audacious the possibility to go skiing) is using as an invisible border on the island, between the green island and the black island. A kind of dam where the clouds carried by permanent trade winds from North, cling. At 15 kilometers away from either side of the summit, the rainfall varies between 360 and 5,000 mm per year! The colors go from a palette of black, gray and yellow to ubiquitous green. The Eastern side is exposed to updrafts: ragged contours, restless ocean, regular rainfall enough to generate tropical forests, deep valleys and high waterfalls… One example among many: the impressive Waipi’o Valley, northeast of the island, is a steep-sided valley that looks like a giant amphitheater whose walls, almost vertical, reach 600 meters high and are covered with 50 shades of green valley. Diluvian rains flows into waterfalls which rush down and flow, in their turn, into a river that pours into a bay greatly prized by surfers. We reach green spaces by a winding and steep road (over 25 % in places) to do on foot or by 4 × 4. Once arrived down, opt for the right side will lead you to the ocean and one of the largest black sand beaches of the island while choose the left, land side, will take you on a greenery sea made of plants, flowers, sprawling native trees and other crops of taro. A lush vegetation will accompany you till Hilo, the rainiest city in the United States… THE BLACK ISLAND On the other side of Mauna Kea spreads a façade which seems much more austere, gloomy, stony, mineral, and widely marked by eruptions of Mauna Loa and Kilauea , even if this occidental slope is less subject to winds and has the most clement climate. This is also on this side that you’ll find the most beautiful beaches of Big island surrounded by black basaltic rocks which contrast with turquoise-blue of a really very attractive water. With its weak slopes, Mauna Loa – long mountain in Hawaiian – is a piling up of basaltic slides, hardly higher than Mauna Kea, which cover half of the island’s area. If its last great eruption dates back to 1996, the Kilauea, has ejected lava and melted rocks in 2011 and 2012, and gave

an exceptional show for amateurs of thrills… More soberly, visitors can cross the Kīlauea Iki, former lake of solidified lava formed after an eruption in the 1950s, and safely discover open cracks, cataclysmic elevations, gas emanations and scoria. Or, they can follow the successive lava flows towards the ocean which, blocks roads and progressively redraw the island’s contours at each new explosion. You never been to the Moon? So, be happy the landscape you see looks like the Moon’s one! But unlike the moon, on these volcanoes, the aftermath of a devastating lava, life slowly reasserts itself, ferns, bushes, flowers, successfully and with perseverance, come back to life, making their way through a territory as inhospitable as fascinating… Lou Camino
