Adventuresome

Welcome to East Idaho Eastern Idaho is adventure’s second home. Here you’ll find wildlife roaming the pristine landscapes framed by mountains and carved by some of the best rivers in the west. Eastern Idaho is both a sportsman’s paradise and a sightseer’s must-see destination. Many people don’t know much about Idaho except “famous potatoes.” But, since you are here, you would probably like to know more. Adjacent to Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho is a big state. It’s been said if you flatten all the mountains in Idaho, the state would be the size of Texas. Idaho covers two time zones, runs from Canada to Nevada, and encompasses the western side of the continental divide of the Rocky Mountains. Rivers, mountains and farmland dominate the state’s landscape. The panhandle has emerald green hillsides, timbered mountains and pristine lakes. Central Idaho is covered with jagged peaks. The Snake River Plain, with its wide open vistas, irrigated farm lands and vibrant cities forms the character of Southern Idaho. Idaho’s history lies with its native tribes, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and determined pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Today’s Idaho is both cosmopolitan and small-town friendly. Boise, the capital and largest city, developed near Fort Boise along the Oregon Trail has grown to a population of 190,000. Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism are Idaho’s major industries. Abundant outdoor recreation opportunities and scenic vistas around every turn attract over 20 million tourists annually. Whichever part of this magnificent state you choose to discover, you’ll find spectacular scenery, fun things to do and friendly, helpful people. You’ll also find a place that’s unhurried, unspoiled and unassuming. So linger awhile and discover Idaho.

101 AREA THINGS TO DO - SPRING/FALL 2016 Museum of idaho

The Legacy Flight Museum is the brain child of John Bagley of Rexburg, Idaho, who founded the museum in 2006. His goal and the goal of the museum’s volunteers is to give guests the opportunity to see up close and personal some of the aircraft that United States Military Veterans flew as they served our country and provided us with the freedoms that we enjoy today.

1

America’s Revolution: Rebels with a Cause Come to the Museum of Idaho (MOI) and experience the year 1776 when a group of American rebels joined ranks and declared our sovereignty. Travel back in time to the foundation of the United States of America, when a group of men and women fought for the right to self-govern. Examine the letters they wrote and experience how their ideas came together to form the Declaration of Independence. George Washington, Paul Revere, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock—you know the names from history books and classrooms. At the MOI you will see artifacts from our Founding Fathers, some of which have never been exhibited in public and may never be publicly displayed again. This exhibition is the product of two years of scouring the nation for collectors willing to share their Revolutionary War treasures. Come look at these artifacts that personalize and humanize the men and women who fought the King--and Won! The MOI will be showcasing weapons that were the personal possessions of men such as John Stark who declared, “Live Free or Die!” and a decorative pair of Hessian dueling pistols that were taken after the battle of Trenton. Look at reproductions of the uniforms that the soldiers wore and imagine our forefathers fighting on east coast battlefields, sweltering in wool and carrying flintlock muskets. America’s Revolution: Rebels with a Cause will be at the Museum of Idaho June 3 – November 26. Take a break from the politics that are a part of election season, and get in touch with the Patriotism that fueled the birth of our great nation.

Lots of official black and white photos and an occasional miniature model show what happened when the Teton Dam collapsed in 1976. An estimated 80 billion gallons of water scoured Rexburg, killing nine people. A line on the wall of the museum shows the high water mark of the “unforgettable calamity.” There are a few mud-caked mementos on display, and a ten-minute film tries to convey the magnitude and mess of the event. In 2016, after receiving complaints that the Teton Flood Museum didn’t have enough Teton Flood exhibits, the Rexburg city council simply changed the museum’s name to the Museum of Rexburg. But the flood exhibits are still in it. Address: 51 N. Center St., Rexburg, ID Hours: Summer M 10 am - 7 pm, T-Sa 10 am - 5 pm; fewer hours and days off-season. Civil Defense Caves

9

Past the Saint Anthony Sand Dunes, the Civil Defense Caves, and the Ice Caves, you will find sagebrush — miles upon miles of nothing but sagebrush-covered desert. But if you follow your GPS down the rugged dirt roads and beyond the caterpillar nests, you’ll come to the precipice of a hidden oasis. Thirty-five miles North of Rexburg is a volcanic crater officially known as Pine Butte, but affectionately known to many as simply The Caldera. The road drives right up to the upper rim of the cauldron formation, immersed in the seemingly endless desert. Here you’ll find the trail-head. The short walk down is steep but relatively easy, about a half mile at most. You’ll notice immediately that you have entered a new world as you descend into a pine forest. As you enter, you’ll feel the air change and easily forget that only moments ago you were driving through a hot, arid, and endless desert. At the bottom of the trail, you’ll find a large, beautiful meadow (about 150x500ft) surrounded by a large grove of Aspens, and a nice little fire pit where others have also enjoyed their stay. There’s plenty to explore and boulders to be climbed. Keep a lookout for stinging nettle and be sure to bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to have a fire. Though noticeably more humid than the surrounding desert, the butte falls just short of being a full-fledged oasis, having no natural water source. Find directions or share your experience at http://www.freearenas.com/pine-butte.html.

Devil’s Stairs

11

If you’ve been in the area for very long, you’ve heard of Table Rock (AKA Table Mountain) in the breathtaking Teton mountain range, and hopefully you’ve had a chance to climb it. It’s debatably the best view you’ll ever get of the Grand Tetons. Just to the West is an often overlooked less traveled trail, full of beautiful meadows and beautiful views all its own. The trail begins from the same campsite as the Table Rock trailhead but instead heads South. You’ll walk first through about three miles of beautiful mountain meadows and thickets of trees surrounded on either side by majestic mountains. The trail diverts from the others with which you’ve been sharing your hike and makes a courageous turn up the mountain. You’ll find the biggest test of your climb as you ascend 1000 feet in about 2 miles of switchback trails. At the top of the switchbacks there is a small ledge, as if it was the edge of a large stair. Above that, you’ll find a gorgeous meadow filled with wildflowers, beautiful trees, and a babbling brook all against the monumental backdrop of a towering cliff. The entire hike is about eight miles in and out. Find directions or share your story at http://www.freearenas. com/devils-stairs.html.

Yellowstone National Park

39

Among national parks Yellowstone is first in many ways. It is the first national park in the world, established on March 1, 1872, the example on which parks everywhere are modeled. It is the largest park in the lower 48 states, larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined, about 60 miles long and wide. It has some of the most famous features in any of America’s national parks, its diversity of attractions is a match for any location on the planet. It is located in 3 states--Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho--and encompasses 2,221,766 mostly undeveloped acres (3467 square miles). Yellowstone is best known, and originally came to prominence, for its over 10,000 hydrothermal features, including hot springs and pools, mud pots, and spectacular geysers, such as Old Faithful. Fueled by sources of heat very close to the surface, Yellowstone provides views of features which are the most plentiful, spectacular, and interesting in the world. A feast for the tourist, many of the most famous and interesting features in the park are easily accessible from the park’s 300 miles of roads. Other geophysical features are also characteristic of Yellowstone National Park. In

its mountainous setting, it sits astride the Continental Divide, and so the 20-40 of precipitation which falls annually within the confines of the park may end up in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Yellowstone includes several mountain ranges and a large number of high peaks, such as Bunsen Peak, the remains of a volcanic vent plugged with magma and exposed by erosion, which reaches an elevation of 8564 feet. It also includes an enormous body

of water (Yellowstone Lake), and a number of rivers and streams. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is one of the most magnificent canyons in the United States. Especially memorable is the plethora of wildlife in the park. This includes freely roaming and easily visible herds of buffalo, herds of elk, grizzly and black bears, moose, and many other animals. It is one of the finest places to view wildlife in all of North America. Nearly three million people visit the park each year, and over 60 million have visited it since 1872. This is an especially large number given its relatively remote location, located far away from any major population centers. In addition to the natural wonders, the park provides the most elaborate set of museums and visitors centers available in any national park.

Yellowstone’s Cascade

40

Yellowstone’s Cascade Corner is on the door step of Yellowstone National Park. People travel all over the world to see the wonders that Yellowstone has. The lesser traveled southwestern corner of Yellowstone known as the Cascade Corner is filled with lush meadows, canyons and countless waterfalls.

of the current US. A mile south, Lower Mesa Falls repeats the performance; the river continually chiseling away at the solidified ash and lava. Some layers are more than a million years old. Today, Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are the last prominent waterfalls on the Snake River to resist human control. This remarkable place has nurtured life over the eons. With your help, it will continue to do so for generations to come.

Bechler Falls

Bechler Falls may not be the biggest cascade but is a true site to see as it is wider than it is tall and is one of the more accessible cascades in the Bechler region.

Cave Falls

43

Cave Falls is Yellowstone’s widest waterfalls at over 250 feet. It gets its name from a cave that was right off to the side of the falls. The cave collapsed years back but is still a site to see as you hike up to where the rock fell.

Green Canyon Hot Springs

55

Off of Highway 33 near Newdale, Idaho, just 40 minutes away from Rexburg, Green Canyon Hot Springs has entertained visitors for over 100 years. With a rich history rooted in the Upper Snake River Valley, the Neibaur family has run Green Canyon Hot Springs since 1953. Originally named Pincock Hot Springs, after its original owners, the current hot springs were rebuilt at the bottom of the canyon, east of their original location. The hot springs feature three pools, including a cool pool at 55 degrees and the hot pool at a sizzling 105 degrees. John H. Pincock bought the land surrounding Green Canyon Hot Springs initially to mine, process and sell lime to the nearby sugar factory for production. Shortly after, they discovered the “bathing pool” nearby and purchased the water rights as well, and Green Canyon Hot Springs had begun. If you are considering visiting this summer, you should know that the springs are open Monday-Friday from 12-10 p.m. and Saturday from 10am until 10 p.m. Season passes can also be purchased.
