emming Village is pleased to announce the addition of three new exciting stores opening in early to late April. Kiwi Loco and Lulu & Oliver will open in the remaining two spaces within the Shops at Hemming Village. Nielsen’s Frozen Custard will replace Bambino’s located on second West near Jimmy John’s and Crazy Mike’s Video.

Kiwi Loco will feature soft-serve, frozen yogurt with a variety of flavors and toppings. Kiwi Loco is a franchise with other locations in Idaho and is based out of Twin Falls.

Lulu & Oliver will offer a variety of children’s clothing and accessories for girls and boys alike. Lulu & Oliver is owned by Cindy and Rick Nielson who also own Lulu Bella, a women’s apparel boutique also located in Hemming Village.

Nielsen’s Frozen Custard has long been a big hit in the Utah market, but has recently begun to expand to other markets as well.

Nielsen’s Frozen Custard features a full fast food menu in addition to their famous custard. The store will be next to Jimmy John’s and Crazy Mike’s Video, in the current Bambino location.

cott Johnson, Rexburg’s economic development director, said the concept of shopping locally is still a good idea even in a global economy.

“We may not be purchasing local products, but shopping locally provides job opportunities within our local communities which keeps some of the money here,” he said.

However some products and commodities are produced in the upper valley.

Johnson said the Farmer’s Market in Rexburg is a good example of those kinds of opportunities, noting that the weekly summertime event has been very well supported by both vendors and customers.

“People want to know where their products are coming from,” he said. “People are wanting to eat healthier and have healthier lifestyles, so people want to know where their food is coming from. We encourage people to buy locally produced products.”

One of the things the city has been doing lately to assist economic growth is fostering business creation.

An example of this is the Eastern Idaho Business Competition that was held last January.

From a field of 20 teams of entrepreneurs, six were chosen to receive business development assistance provided by the city and numerous area businesses and economic development agencies.

Each business plan was judged according to the viability of the business model and the effectiveness of the presentation.

Johnson said several of these businesses are now moving forward effectively.

hen buying anything from furniture to electronics, consumers are often inclined to turn to their nearby big box store as a first stop in comparison shopping. Although big box retailers do offer competitive prices, they may not be the best option for consumers trying to stay on budget or close to it.

Boutique shops, local merchants and independent online retailers often offer competitive prices and better overall service than bigger chains.

Good things come in smaller packages Price is a major factor in where people shop. Millions of people turn to big box retailers thinking they will get the best prices, but a little research can yield other findings. While some bigger chains may offer doorbuster sales luring customers in with the “item du jour,” in general, prices on most everyday items are the same or

higher than other retailers. All it takes is an online comparison of a certain product to show the similarity in pricing.

According to University of Utah assistant marketing professors Arul and Himanshu Mishra, it’s common to find similar pricing on most items in many big box stores.

Therefore, these retailers use bigticket items to attract customers, who then just stay in the store to get the remaining higher-margin items and accessories on their lists.

Shopping in smaller stores or independent online retailers also may be preferable to many consumers. The trend is to revitalize “Main Street America” by shopping smaller retailers and Mom & Pop establishments. Some companies actually offer incentives to do so. During the 2010 holiday season, American Express credited a portion of customers’ accounts on items purchased at small businesses on the Saturday after Black Friday. There is a new initiative to rename that day “Small Business Saturday” in an effort to encour-
