Low-cost gift ideas for children

DECEMBER 2010

SPECIAL TO THE STANDARD JOURNAL Metro Creative Services

ccording to child development experts, role play can instill many skills in children that are important as kids get older. Those skills include thinking in abstract, language development and comfort in social settings. Encouraging children to role play becomes even easier when parents offer a holiday gift that inspires dress-up and imagination. The bonus? It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either. Chances are former Halloween costumes of years past are in the attic, basement, or tucked away in a box in a closet. Or maybe there’s old clothing that was intended to be donated to charity, but never quite made it there. Parents can use this treasure trove of dress-up parts to create a costume trunk, perfect for boys and girls. The first step is finding a container that can house the clothing and accessories. A toy chest with flip-up lid is ideal, but there are other options, too. A plastic storage container also can be used. Depending on the child’s interests, the container can be painted or decorated with the youngster’s name and whimsical images that inspire imagination. Think about fairy castles or pirate treasures. If a boy loves toys and trucks, paint a road and vehicles on the chest. The next step is to load the container with the costumes and any other clothing that will make good dress-up wear. Additional items can be supplemented and often bought on discount after Halloween. Don’t overlook 99 cents stores and other discount outlets for more items, such as plastic crowns or firefighter hats. Ask friends and family if they have any previously used costumes that are no longer needed that can be added to the costume chest. Face paints and makeup can complete the assortment of dress-up components. Wrap up the costume container and offer it during the holidays. In addition to the wonder of opening such a large present, children can be entertained for hours with all of the items tucked inside. They can also rediscover the costumes of their trick-or-treating pasts. Encourage young METRO CREATIVE PHOT ones to put on shows to further show off their Gift-givers can put together a costume chest relatively inexpensively, giving children opportunities to role play f dressing up. hours.

he Teton Regional Land Trust is selling a compilation CD called “Songs from the Land” that lets musicians share their love of the region in a most entertaining way. The music project that celebrates musicians and their love for the wild places around them. The singers and musicians include Reina Collins, Michael Batdorf, Kane’s River, Michael Hurwitz, Martha Scanlan, Margo Valiante, Greg Creamer, Anne and Pete Sibley, Thomas Sneed, Ben Winship, Merissa Wilson, Jeff Newsom, Jessica Kilroy, Mary Neil, Loose Ties, Screen Door Porch and the Miller Sisters. If you purchase this 16-song disc from the land trust at their website, w w w. t e t o n l a n d trust.org, be ready for a wide variety of tales – all with some connection to the region. “We hope to evoke emotion, engage local communities and encourage support for land conservation in eastern Idaho with C M Y K

the Songs from the Land project,” Teton Regional Land Trust Outreach Coordinator Emily Nichols says. The selections include songs written specifically about Teton Valley and people there and the community. “Ed Trafton” is a tale sung by Michael Hurwitz about the notorious Teton Valley felon who one day robbed 14 different stages in Yellowstone Park in 1914 and how his wandering eye is what led to his demise. Greg Creamer sings “Vern’s Early Riser,” a tune about a slower and simpler time and a

breakfast served in a cafe next to a bowling alley that once existed in Driggs. Other tunes are sung by natives of the valley, such as Merrisa Wilson, who sings “These Hills” about the hills at the base of the Tetons where her family has lived for five generations. The landscape, rivers, mountains and the agriculture way of life are recurrent themes the musicians channel to tell their stories both personal and universal. The sing tunes you might expect to hear from someone’s back porch on a warm summer afternoon,

and the distinctive voices of such artists as Martha Scanlan stay in your head after the CD player is turned off. A rendition of the tune, “The Weight” by The Band, adds another familiar dimension to the CD. The often-covered song evokes in him a sense of the rural countryside and a simpler way of life, says Jeff Newsom, who performs it on the CD. The proceeds from the CD compilation will benefit the land trust’s operations in land conservation and will be used to raise awareness for the mission of the organization. The CD is avail-

able online and from various vendors in Driggs and Idaho Falls. A donations from the Idaho National Laboratory helped support the project. Ben Winship and The Henhouse Recording Studio helped compile art-

Unique gifts are out there JOSEPH LAW jlaw@uvsj.com

I

t’s a great time to be a child because there are some really neat toys this year. When I was young toys only did one thing, but they did it well. For example, one Christmas I got an orange Tonka road grader. It had real rubber wheels and survived much rough and tumble play with me and my three younger brothers. Not to mention an attack by a neighbor kid who had a ball-peen hammer. But now toys can transform into other toys without needing a hammer or other tools. An example is Fisher-Price’s “Rock, Roll ‘n Ride Trike XL.” This is a multi-functional tricycle that can serve as a stroller with foot-pegs for the rider, a trike the child can pedal, in addition to becoming a rocking trike. You know, something like a rocking horse. The photographs show the transformation being easily made, so apparently you don’t need an engineering degree from MIT to do it. For older kids there are some intriguing gifts. Scrabble now has “Flash Cubes.” It looks like fun. There are electric powered helicopter toys that look like big Chinooks down to smaller Bell Rangers and even one that is a flying saucer. They’re quite sophisticated, with counter-rotating rotor blades on the same shaft. Thus 75 years of progress by the military-industrial complex can fly around your Christmas tree for about $30. Slot cars are back, usually with a media tie-in such as the Ferrari Challenge from Carrera Go!!! that is based on the animated movie “Cars.” Wild Planet’s Spy Gear Night Goggles far surpass any spy toy available during the height of the Cold War. I feel deprived. But Bozo the clown is back. The toymaker Rocket USA features a Bozo Bop Bag, so children can develop their boxing skills without damage to siblings. For more information go to the Web site www. amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/toys-and-games. And there are numerous toys and gifts that are aimed at stimulating a child’s gray matter. The educational kit called Thames & Kosmos Milestones in Science gives an overview of the history of science. The makers say children can explore the world’s most significant discoveries and experiments while learning about people like like Einstein, Copernicus and Archimedes. Maybe your kid will want to make a lie-detector. Maybe you will. If so the Elenco Electronics Snap Circuits Extreme SC-750 may be the thing. There are over 750 different experiments for budding inventors, anything from a door bell to a radio. Other educational possibilities are on the Website www.bestunusualchristmasgifts.com. Good luck. And be sure the hide the hammer so the toys will last a little longer.

Electronics a hot item in Rexburg NATE SUNDERLAND nsunderland@uvsj.com

L

ocal retailers say that this year, even more than in previous years video games and electronics are the biggest, most popular gift items. “People want electronics more than toys — the X-Boxes, Wii, and video games,” said Mike Bullard, General Manager of the Walmart in Rexburg. “For the majority of adults and children I see it’s all about electronics.” DVDs and video game consoles seem to be the most popular items at the Walmart and Kmart in Rexburg. “Electronic stuff has been very popular this year,” said Kmart assistant Manager Jill Mangum. For smaller children dolls, action figures and “Toy Story” related products are flying off the shelves. At local hardware and sporting good stores power tools are a hot item. Daniel Moldenhauer,

s Christmas quickly approaches, it can be difficult to find that special someone in your life a gift that is meaningful and well-thought-out. The trend to “gift-giving” these days is creative and useful gifts. Here are a few tips and ideas that can help you with your “gift-giving” ideas. 1) Tailor your gift towards the person’s personality rather than their list of things they would like. Think of what they like to do in their spare time and things they are interested in. By tailoring your gift towards a personality, you are giving a gift that will be much more meaningful to the individual. For example: my father is a computer engineer. In essence, he likes to build and make things with his hands. For him, the perfect gift would be something he could build with. 2) Buy something age appropriate. Sometimes when we buy an item we think that the person who receives it will be able to use it. However, often times they are either too young or old to not only care about the item, but know how to use it. Get a gift that you know they would know how to use with ease and not have to worry about how complex the item is to use or work with. 3) Get a gift that will last. Too often people buy perfume, clothes or DVDs that are used quite often at first, but it will eventually be forgotten. The gift doesn’t have to be expensive, but keeping in mind the age and interests will help the longevity of the item. Some ideas that have been implemented include a surprise family photo shoot, pets given to children and even a spa package to help that special someone relax. As the shopping season is coming to close, remember that when purchasing a gift you are not only purchasing it for the season but you are showing that person how much they mean to you.

a part owner of the Ace Hardware store i Rexburg says that Craftsmen Power Tool are currently their biggest sale item.
