Congratulations Student-athletes

Congratulations to the incredible student-athletes featured in this insert! They are truly talented students both on and off the playing field in Eastern Idaho! The College of Arts & Letters is home to unique programs. We are the largest college on campus with 24 undergraduate degree programs that prepare our students to excel in an ever-changing world. The academic opportunities that we provide to incredible student-athletes who chose ISU both for our athletic programs and to achieve their academic goals are extraordinary. One example is Katie Nicholls. She chose to come to ISU from Boise, but also to run Cross Country and Track & Field. Katie chose to study Spanish for the Health Professions, one of the many unique programs that the College of Arts & Letters has to offer. “ISU has given me many opportunities to succeed as a well rounded student,” Katie said. “The faculty and coaches have really worked with my schedule and aspirations so that I was able to balance research, volunteering, working

and shadowing, with my academics and athletics.” Katie will graduate this spring, and was also named one of the 2016 College of Arts & Letters Outstanding Students. After graduation, she will continue her education at ISU as a student in the Physician Assistant program at our Meridian campus. Another example of our outstanding student-athletes was Austin Graves. Austin came to ISU to play football, and he chose to study philosophy. Our philosophy program expanded his knowledge and developed his ability to engage in critical analysis. Since graduating in 2014, Austin has started law school at Creighton University and is using the things he learned at ISU every day. Idaho State University features over 300 athletes in 13 sports. This school year proved to be another great year for our student-athletes. The men’s basketball team finished one of their best seasons in the last 30 years, and our women’s basketball team went on a great run during the Big Sky Conference Tournament, including a game winning

shot. Off the field, the women’s soccer team named 13 athletes to the Big Sky Academic Team. We pride ourselves on giving our students real world experiences and opportunities. From the social sciences to the humanities to the fine arts, each program builds the skills needed for a career and a productive life. We believe that our student-athletes are the hardest workers on and off the field, and it shows! The College of Arts & Letters has much to offer OUR local students, and I encourage you to explore our college and departmental websites. Our exceptional faculty have dedicated their lives to student learning and the discovery of new knowledge, and they want to share it with you! We hope it’s obvious that student athletes shine at ISU. Not only are our athletic programs top notch, but so is the education that OUR student-athletes receive at ISU! Congratulations and Best Wishes! Kandi Turley-Ames, Founding Dean

Grateful to be a part of Standard Journal Sports Stars Awards Damon Chlarson sjsports@uvsj.com

At the Standard Journal, we were grateful for the chance to honor the top athletes from our area and were pleased with the reception from the parents and schools to the program. As the second year, we envision these awards to be something that run for years to come as a measure of excellence in athletics. One of the difficult things about these awards is making the selections. Each team had multiple players that were worthy of the selection of top athlete for their team. Conversely, many of the winners could have been selected as winners in multiple sports. The competition among the schools and between athletes here is simply that high, and the amount of athletes heading to play college sports and the amount of record-breaking athletes serve as proof of that. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to honor all of the athletes. We recognize that each athlete on the roster dedicates so much time and effort to their sport. That’s what makes it difficult. However, we also hope

that the difficult choices also help each selected athlete understand that their work is seen and we notice the spectacular work. We are very appreciative of Brandon Bair, our keynote speaker. He exemplifies a true professional and just emanates positivity. His speech was inspiring and he helped narrow down the focus of sports to what they really are about at the high school level: developing good people. Sticking to the values that he held was something that gave Bair a competitive edge. He also talked about how being the best that he could be individually and not comparing himself to others helped him excel on the field and off the field. It’s not about being better than the next guy; it’s about being better than you were the day before. These are team sports primarily and each selection was run by an athletic director or coach who ensured us that we have selected a good representation of their team and program. We present the winners of the 2016 Standard Journal Sports Stars Awards and look forward to 2017 and another chance to honor the premier athletes in the Upper Valley area.
