Wahl’s debut showcases he can hang

s soon as Tyler Wahl walked into the Sanford Pentagon, a classic 1950s-60s throwback gymnasium with a dark hardwood floor and a “Hoosiers” intimacy, he felt at home even though he had never before set foot on Heritage Court, a 3,250-seat venue. “It’s kind of like the Civic Center,” he said with a shy grin. “I’ve got good memories.” The Pentagon is so unique, there aren’t many matches. But from Wahl’s reference point, there are some old school similarities with the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota where his Lakeville North team whipped John Marshall High School in the Class 4A sectional finals last March. It was Lakeville’s seventh straight win over John Marshall in the title game and eighth consecutive trip to the state tournament. Good memories, indeed. As the only true freshman on the Wisconsin roster, the 18-yearold Wahl is now in the process of making new memories. On Tuesday night, he made

his college debut here in the Badgers’ 65-63 overtime loss to Saint Mary’s. The 6-foot-7, 214-pound Wahl (who coincidentally wears the same No. 5 as highly-touted freshman quarterback Graham Mertz) played a little over 12 minutes. Wahl’s only basket came with 59 seconds left in the first half and fueled a 14-5 UW run after the Gaels had outscored the Badgers 18-1 to take a 10-point lead, 30-20. “It was fun, it was a good environment,” Wahl said afterward. “I learned that we could play with them — a highly-ranked team that is expected to do good things. We were right there with them.” On Tuesday afternoon, six hours before tipoff, Wahl got a taste of the Wisconsin basketball culture when the team visited a children’s hospital in Sioux Falls. UW coach Greg Gard was asked if one or two players could make the visit. Gard brought everybody, including the coaching and support staff. “I think it’s incredible — it puts everything into perspective,”

said junior guard Brad Davison. “We’re not necessarily from here, but we’re all communities in one way or another and whenever you get a chance to do something as a team and you can give back to a community, you do it.” Because this is essentially a brave new Badger world for Wahl, Davison advised him, “Follow our lead and just enjoy it. Soak it in. Enjoy the moments with your teammates. Also enjoy the interactions we’re going to have at the hospital. There’s power about being fully present in the moment. “During the season, things can get going kind of fast; it can become hectic. When we can take time out of our day, especially on a game day, it’s extremely powerful and the thing to do when you have the opportunity to give back and interact with kids with different backgrounds and circumstances.” Wahl was moved by the experience. “That was really awesome,” he said, “we get the opportunity to do those kinds of things.”

Wahl has heard stories about ▪▪▪▪ Krabbenhoft’s legendary toughThrough their evaluation of ness. “And I’m sure I’ll hear more Nate Reuvers — a four-star prosas the season goes on,” said pect at Lakeville North where Wahl, who was asked if he had he was a finalist for Minnesota’s been coached up in this area. a broken foot and scored 30 some points. He knew his foot was sore, but we didn’t know it was broken.” Reck knew all along that Krabbenhoft would join the coaching fraternity once his playing days were over. “He was coaching our team when he was on the floor,” he said. “As a sophomore, he played on varsity and he was our point guard. He ran the show. He was awesome.” Begeman went to a rival high school (O’Gorman), but is now the Roosevelt head coach. “Joe just did everything for his team,” he said. Now Krabbenhoft is saying the same about Wahl as far as his potential to do it all. He’s not the only one saying those things, either. “Tyler is an unusual freshman,” suggested UW assistant Alando Tucker. “This kid has all the smarts and determination and he has no fear. If I came in here and I didn’t know the program and players, I would assume that he’s a sophomore or junior. He has patience and he has a will. “I think of myself coming in as a freshman and being able to pick up the system quick and it translated to me being able to play at an early age in my career. I see similar things in him. He’s not afraid to try things. He’s not afraid to do things.” Tucker spoke of the learning curve and making mistakes which is inevitable for a freshman. “But,” he said, “he doesn’t let that mistake affect him or phase him.” Click to read more »

NOAH LEIBOLD MEN’S SOCCER SENIOR ▪ MIDFIELDER WIESBADEN, GERMANY TOM LYNN

BY PAUL CAPOBIANCO ▪ UW BRAND COMMUNICATIONS

You have had to deal with a lot of adversity this season. How do you think this has prepared you for postseason play? “It’s been a struggle, but through adversity you build your mental character. I think we have been through so much that we are mentally stronger than other teams at the moment. Maybe we weren’t weeks ago, but we’ve been through so much that we know how to stay calm in certain situations. It will definitely help down the stretch.” How do fans in The Colony (student section) at McClimon help the team? “It’s like the twelfth man so to speak. In Europe, you speak about the twelfth person behind you. Giving you the extra motivation, the extra kick to do well.” What is your favorite place on campus and why? “I would say the library ... nah. Probably the stadium, just because I’m in here all the time. I’ve got everything I need here. I’ve got my friends here, so this is the place to be at for me.” You have the best GPA on the team. Why do you think you’ve been so successful academically? “It just comes down to hard work and determination. I like to envision things and see what I could be down the stretch. I kind of just go for it as hard as I can until I finally get there.” Can you tell us a little bit about your journey from your home in Germany to Wisconsin? “I was playing in Germany at a pretty decent level and I didn’t sign professionally. I wanted to combine sports and academics, so this was the perfect opportunity for me. Luckily enough the coaches here at Wisconsin emailed me back and I kind of just went from there and the rest is history.” What are your plans for after graduation? “I’m going to go back home to Germany and then see if I can find a way into medicine somehow.” Click to read more »

.J. Taylor apologized for his hoarse voice. Lamenting rapidly-changing weather late last week — “This wave of freezing temperatures and snow has been getting to me” — Taylor was battling a cold and nasal congestion, making Wisconsin’s second bye in the schedule timely for the senior wide receiver. “I’m not feeling too bad, just a little stuffed up, but it’s really a good thing we don’t have a game,” Taylor said. “This bye has been really good for me because I’ve just been able to relax. I was going home (to Kansas City), but I decided not to because I didn’t want to do too much traveling. “I didn’t want to be tired getting ready for Iowa.” He was voicing (however scratchy) what has been on the mind of everyone. On the heels of consecutive losses, the Badgers are not looking back on their season as much as they are powering up for November football.

“We’re ready to reboot for sure,” Taylor emphasized. With four games left in the regular season, starting with Saturday’s matchup against Iowa at Camp Randall Stadium, the 16th-ranked Badgers (6-2, 3-2) and the No. 18 Hawkeyes (6-2, 3-2) are both chasing Minnesota (8-0, 5-0) – setting up a classic round robin between the three rivals over the final month. On Nov. 16, the Gophers will play at Iowa, where they haven’t won since 1999. On Nov. 30, the Badgers will play at Minnesota, where they haven’t lost since 2003. In the meantime, Saturday’s clash of unbeatens — Penn State and Minnesota — at TCF Bank Stadium is one of the most highly-anticipated games in decades for the Twin Cities. It’s an early kickoff (11 a.m.) so the outcome will be known before the Hawkeyes and Badgers take the field at 3 p.m. Despite the Gophers being in the proverbial driver’s seat, the Big Ten West Division ti-

tle, and a trip to Indianapolis for the league’s “As Coach (Paul) Chryst says, ‘It’s not about championship game (Dec. 7), still hangs in the what has been lost, but what remains.’ We balance. It’s why Iowa-Wisconsin has so much have to refocus our mind. We’re still playing urgency and the feel of a single-elimination for something big; we’re still playing for a Big playoff round. Ten West title to move into the championship “Playing for that game. Conversely, the Hawks have won four bite us in the butt.” of the last six at Camp Randall. “It’s always going to be a competitive game, no matter who is the better team,” opined Taylor, who has never lost to the Hawkeyes. “Iowa knows how to play us. We know how to play Iowa. It’s going to be a dog fight and it’s going to come down to who wants it more.” Penn State, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin all had a bye last Saturday. Maybe nobody needed it more than the Badgers, who have been forced to regroup after a frustrating loss on a last-second field goal in Champaign and a second-half beatdown in Columbus. “I think this bye is really going to be good for us, but it’s all about what you make of it,” said Taylor, putting the onus on the players. “You can sit and ponder on those losses and let that defeat you during the bye week. Or you can regain your focus for the last four games.

enough separation to make an over-the-shoulder grab. It was a small window, a laser throw and Taylor made a difficult catch look relatively easy. “Jack took a chance and threw it to me, and we made something happen,” Taylor said. “I remember when the ball was in the air, I couldn’t hear anything, I couldn’t hear the crowd. My focus was on the ball and I just tracked it into my hands and made sure I got into the end zone.” It was his first touchdown reception of the season and ninth in 48 games. “Everyone told me, ‘Just be patient because your time is going to come,’” related Taylor, who had only five catches in the previous four games combined (none longer than 21 yards). “It felt amazing and I felt like I made the most out of that opportunity for myself and the team.” On Oct. 26, Taylor had a hand in one of the Taylor mentioned that it ranked as one of his few offensive highlights at Ohio State. Niemann on a seam route that capped a 10play, 88-yard drive and pushed the Badgers into a 21-17 lead. Fullback Alec Ingold’s 33-yard TD burst iced the win with 22 seconds left. The last time the Hawkeyes played in Madison (2017), Taylor also scored in a 38-14 triumph, the largest margin of victory over Iowa since 1999. And it was triggered by a smothering Wisconsin defense that held Iowa to five first downs, 25 rushing yards (on 26 carries) and 66 yards of total offense. The latter was the fewest yards ever allowed to a Big Ten opponent in school history. On Saturday, both teams may struggle getting the ball into the end zone. Iowa ranks No. 3 nationally behind Ohio State and Penn State in scoring defense (10.1), giving up just nine touchdowns in eight games. The Badgers are tied for sixth (11.4) with Clemson, allowing 12 TDs.

“Fundamentally, we’re a pretty good team, but I think it comes down to the details within those fundamentals,” said Taylor, speaking for a UW offense that managed just 191 total yards at Ohio State. “Details like eyes. Details like pad level. Details like angles coming out of routes. We can do better.” Coming out of their first bye (Sept. 14), the Badgers were meticulous in their attention to detail racing out to a 35-0 third quarter lead against Michigan in what was a convincing 3514 win at Camp Randall. Can they get back to that dominating level of play in November? Based on what Taylor saw during three byeweek practices, monitoring how the team bounced back from the painful Ohio State defeat, he said, “As the week went on it got a lot better and you could feel that energy come back up again as we had at the beginning of the season.” The best remedy for a cold or a losing streak.
