At the United Way of Central Florida, we understand local needs and drive lasting change in our community. For more than 30 years, UWCF has been investing your charitable gifts in services that change people’s lives right here in Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties. Because it’s our community, too.

Happy children learn better! Every child is born learning. Here are five ways you can help them learn better.

Understand and respond to your child’s needs.

We focus on three building blocks of a good quality of life: Education, Income, and Health. Education increases a person’s chance of finding gainful, productive employment, and an educated community attracts employers. Financially stable families can weather emergencies without depending on outside help and purchase assets to help grow wealth. Healthy people don’t need extended hospital stays, and people who have a medical home don’t use the emergency room as a primary care facility. At UWCF, we address the root causes that prevent people from getting an good education, a stable income, and staying healthy. While short-term “safety-net” type help may take care of the immediate need of a family or individual, it won’t help them get out of the cycle that put them in the situation to begin with. So, United Way works with its partners to create programs to break those cycles. Each of these focus areas is championed by a committee of experts who have laid out specific goals for their area. Within those goals, measurable results must be shown in order for a program to continue to receive funding. The process of identifying needed programs and evaluating their results is rigorous, but worth the time and effort for the impact it creates on our community. The United Way is a force for social change. It’s a leader bringing together the people who can create that change. It’s a worker toiling away for the common good. The United Way is all of these things, and more, and it’s going to make our community an even better place to live.

Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.

Take care of yourself so you can take care of your child.

Watch your child. When she cries, go to her. Try things like feeding, holding and hugging or singing. This teaches her that you care about her and that she can trust you.

Being a parent can be very tiring. Do not be afraid to ask for help. You can get support from friends, family or community groups.

Create regular routines for your child. Sing and play during bath time. Tell stories before bed. Talk with your child during meal times. Routines give your child a sense that the world is safe and that he can depend on you.

Children are born learning. Together, we shape their learning.

Talk, sing and read with your child. Let your child hear your voice as much as possible. Share books every day. Point out words and letters. Words and sounds are the basis of language and learning.

Make a warm and loving home. Mar k J oseph ph otogr aph y/C h iCago

United Way of Central Florida

Spend time with your child. Hold and hug her. Listen to her. When you make a child feel safe and secure, you help her grow and develop. A child who feels loved has an easier time learning.

62 % of kids asked say their parents are sometime distracted when they are trying to talk to them. By what? 28%: cellphones. 25%: siblings.

Preschoolers are ready to learn the difference between wants and needs and the idea of pricing. At the grocery store look at what the same dollar can buy. Which is a want? Which is a need?

Hey dads! Please join us at Family Fundamentals for Daddy and Me! This fun, free program helps fathers and father figures become the best father they can be and demonstrates how a male role model can make a difference in a child’s life. Just the guys attend a monthly group dinner meeting with discussions such as: • The unique and powerfully beneficial role they play in the lives of their children • The value of reading and learning with their child • Setting age-appropriate goals and expectations for their children The dads along with the children also participate in a monthly outing. These Saturday activities may include bowling, skating, BBQs, fishing, etc.

The program runs from September through May, so its not too late to get in on the action. There is no charge. Please call 863-686-1221 ext. 221 for more information and to register.

Watermelon Season is here! Forget the chips. Kids want to dip watermelon! Take 8 ounces of sour cream, mix in ¼ cup of sugar and one teaspoon vanilla extract. Cut your melon into sticks or small wedges and you are ready to start dipping!

Establish a consistent sleep time routine. Regularly doing the same series of activities before going to bed helps a child understand it is time to go to sleep.
