Lighthouse for the Blind DO YOU KNOW AN INFANT OR YOUNG CHILD AGE 0-6 WHO CANNOT SEE WELL, EVEN WITH GLASSES? We may be able to help. Our teachers work with infants and young children, ages 0-6, who are blind or visually impaired, and their families. The goal is to equip the children with skills needed to develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially. For more information, call Danielle at 863-299-3633 in our Winter Haven office.

United Way of Central Florida Through partnerships with community experts and dedicated volunteers, United Way of Central Florida is creating and championing programs in Polk, Hardee, and Highlands counties that show measurable impact in the areas of Education, Income, and Health. When we work together to help kids succeed in school, to promote financial stability for families, and to improve people’s health, we can achieve more than any one person or organization can do alone. When you give to United Way of Central Florida, your contributions stay in our community. The programs we invest in are evaluated by more than 200 volunteers to ensure that they are fulfilling community need and creating lasting changes in the lives of the people they touch. Join us! The challenges are significant, but when we work together, we can make a difference. That’s how you Live United. When you give to the United Way of Central Florida your contribution is invested with a focus on changing our community. When we work together we can accomplish more than any single group can on it’s own.

There are fireworks in my milk! You will need a bowl or cake pan, whole or 2% milk, food coloring, dish soap and cotton swabs. Pour the milk into the bowl. Add 1 drop from each color near the center of the bowl. Using a clean cotton swab, touch one end into the center without stirring or mixing. Does anything happen? On the other end of the cotton swab, put a drop of dish soap. Place it into the middle of the milk. What happens now? The colors should burst out through the milk. Why does this happen? The chemical bonds found in the protein of the milk are broken by the dish soap, which allows the color to run around freely in the milk

Sun protection tips Everyday life is a learning experience for children. Born Learning is a public engagement campaign that helps parents, grandparents and caregivers explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities. Go to bornlearning.org for free tips and free ideas for free things you can do with your child. For example: For your preschooler-Use car time to talk about your child’s day. Ask specific questions (“Did you draw in preschool?” or “Did you eat a cheese sandwich?”) rather than general ones (“How was your day?”) because they are easier for young children to answer. Help your child talk about past experiences to enhance memory. Talk with your child about where you are going in the future (“We are going to the market on the way home”) to help him or her develop thinking and planning skills.

Create regular routines with your child. Sing and play during bath time. Tell stories before bed. Talk with your child during meal times.

Just a few sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Kids don’t have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. Seek shade. Cover up. Get a hat. Wear sunglasses. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection every time your child goes outside. Apply sunscreen generously 30 minutes before going outdoors. Healthy Frozen Yogurt Those store-bought frozen treats can be full of nasty things like high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors, so let’s make something healthy! When my bananas start to brown, I peel them and put them in a zip-top bag for the freezer. You’ll find there are lots of other fruits you can save by freezing before they spoil to use later. You can use them in smoothies, frozen yogurt and drinks.

The American Academic of Pediatrics recommends no TV/DVD/Video viewing for children under the age of 2. Children over 2 should watch no more than 1-2 hours per day. Pay attention to these factors when allowing viewing times: · Choose quality shows and films : Make sure your child sees and hears positive messages · Have times when TV is off limits such as dinner time or family game night · Watch shows with your child so you can talk about the content and extend the child’s learning Combee Elementary Jackie Olivo, Staff Hours: M, W, F-7:30 AM-3:00 PM T/TH 10:30-6:00 2805 Morgan Combee Rd Lakeland, FL 33801 ( 863) 668-3035

Children learn language, ideas, and how to behave through “give and take” with others. Watching TV shows and movies are passive activities- no chance for interaction. Children with a high rate of TV viewing may show delays in both language and learning. Children who watch more than 1-2 hours of TV a day tend to be less physically active and are at risk for obesity. The less passive viewing a child engages in, the more creative and imaginative the child tends to be.

What happens when our very youngest learners miss so many opportunities to learn? Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are much less likely to read proficiently by the end of third grade and are more likely to have poor attendance in later grades. Did you know that chronic absence affects one in 10 children in kindergarten and first grade nationwide? Consistent attendance in preschool can lay a foundation for better attendance in the school years ahead.

Scavenger Hunt Number Two

Fill a plastic bottle with rice. Mix in small objects like a coin, paperclip, postage stamp, pebble, etc. Ask your child to see how many objects they can find. You may want to glue or tape the lid shut!

Talk, sing and read with your child. Let your child hear your voice as much as possible. Share books every day.
