What is Let’s Grow?

Oscar and his older brother Omar shopped with their mother at HELP of Ft. Meade’s thrift store. One day a staff member offered to help his mother learn to speak and read in English. Angelica was ready, but who would watch her sons? HELP of Ft Meade is a partner in the Let’s Grow Early Literacy Initiative. They provided preschool activities for Oscar while Angelica attended adult classes. Omar participated in the homework assistance program. It was a challenge for Oscar to pay attention at first but with age-appropriate activities his attention span and vocabulary grew. He listened to stories, rhymed words and then learned letters and letter sounds. All three still attend classes. Oscar loves it when his mother reads him the books that came in the mail from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. He also enjoys borrowing books from Success By 6’s Parent Lending Library. Because of Let’s Grow, Oscar earned his place in an advanced kindergarten. Omar also does well in school. Angelica now speaks and reads English; she’s ready to start her GED. Oscar, Omar and Angelica did the work. United Way partnerships provided the support they needed to succeed.

Play Is A Child’s Work, With Benefits Far Beyond The Obvious One: Fun!

Where’s the Baby? Hold your baby so that she is facing toward a mirror. Sing, dance and act silly. Point out her toes, nose, tummy, etc. Turn away from the mirror and ask, “Where did Mommy and Amber go? Turn around and say, “There they are! Let her touch the mirror and play with the “other baby.

Choosing Quality Toys

Social Benefits of Play

-helps a child form meaningful relationships -teaches communication, negotiation, cooperation and compromise -helps a child experience trust, friendship and love

Emotional Benefits of Play

-helps a child express feelings, develop empathy and cope with difficult situations -helps a child deal with emotions and regain a sense of control -helps adults understand a child’s feelings

Intellectual Benefits of Play

-provides ideas and problem-solving -fosters curiosity -prepares a child for school -helps a child make sense of her world and function successfully in it

A rule of thumb: Less is more. The less a toy does, the more opportunity a child has to create and learn from it. Simple toys are easier for children to use, require less supervision and last longer.

9 reasons to rediscover your public library 7

Free programs and activities: From author visits to puppet shows to family films, libraries offer programs with kid appeal after school, on the weekends, and during the summer. Ask your librarian for the schedule of upcoming events.

Music: Want to introduce your children to Beethoven or the Beatles or new children’s songs? Check to see if your library has a collection of music on CD.

Story times: There’s nothing like hearing a good story read by someone who loves to read aloud. Libraries are terrific settings for story times which often include finger plays, games, songs, and crafts that can be learned and enjoyed again at home.

Magazines and newspapers: Introduce your child to some of the magazines designed just for children. With bold photographs, poems and a joke or two, magazines are another reading choice for beginning readers. Or catch up on the news in your community and share a smile over the comics.

2 3

Workshops: Many libraries offer workshops that can help enrich your life as an adult and support you as a parent. At many libraries, it is possible to learn to knit, prepare your taxes, update your resume, gain computer skills, or improve your parenting skills.

4 5 6

Books: Librarians are happy to make recommendations and most public libraries have a special section just for children’s books.

8 9

Computers: Most public libraries offer free Internet access, computers with educational games for kids, and valuable online resources for teenagers.

Audiobooks: Listened to a good book lately? Most libraries have a collection of popular adult and children’s titles available for checkout on tape or CD. Movies: Your public library is a great source for free access to the latest blockbusters, family movie classics, documentaries, or favorite TV shows.

First Day of School Tips: Make the First Day a Happy Day! Attend open house. You both can meet the teacher and begin to feel comfortable in the classroom. Begin the “going to bed/getting up routine a week prior to the start of school. Make sure your child has a good breakfast. Label all personal belongings, such as jackets and backpacks with your child’s name.

Read To Your Baby From Birth, Or Even Before!

Place any money your child takes to school in an envelope and label it with your child’s name and what the money is for. Make sure your child is dressed in clothing that she can manage at bathroom time. Provide a special place at home for school materials such as backpacks, notes, lunch money. Set aside a special time at the end of the day to talk to your child about his day. Ask questions about the first day and every day – What was your favorite part of the day? Tell me about your day – your friends – your picture. Focus on the positive and your child will too! Make an appointment for a conference when you want to talk with a teacher. Teachers are too busy during arrival and dismissal and will not be able to offer you the time you need.

Markers moving in any direction are moving in the right direction.

When a child scribbles and pretends to write he practices communication through written language.

Find a comfy rocker, prop your baby in the crook of your arm and pick out a favorite picture book. Point to the pictures and describe what you see. A book before naps and bedtime is a nice routine to wind down for sleeping. Change your tone of voice and let your baby enjoy the pictures. Before you know it your baby will be entering school with super reading skills!
