What is Success By 6?

Today more than 20% of American workers cannot understand the instructions written in a medical prescription. 85% of juvenile criminals are illiterate. 46% of adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate. The literacy rate of the U.S. ranks 49th of the 156 countries in the United Nations. Children in middle and upper class homes have financial and educational resources. Those children born into less advantaged circumstances are much less likely to receive cognitive and socio-emotional stimulation and other family resources. If they enter school behind, it is likely they will stay behind. Success By 6 is dedicated to helping to create a community where all children, by the age of 6, have the mental, physical, social and emotional foundation to grow into healthy, productive members of the community.

What can you do to help?

United Way of Central Florida Success By 6 has focused on four areas to help parents prepare their children to enter school ready to learn. 1. Access to Health Care. Let your friends and neighbors know about Florida KidCare Insurance for children. No child should be uninsured. www. FloridaKidCare.org 2. Family Involvement in Literacy Activities. Read to your children, grandchildren or neighbor kids. Provide a sponsorship to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Volunteer to read at a child care center. 3. Quality Preschool Experiences. Research your child’s child care provider. Location is NOT the most important aspect of a center! See www. dcfsanswrite.state.fl.us/Childcare/provider to check on a center’s inspection reports. 4. Involvement of Community Partners. Sponsor a Lending Library, read to a child, give to United Way, donate a Born Learning Trail.

For more information contact Jodi Tucker at 863-648-1500 ext. 265 or jodi.tucker@uwcf.org.

Are your children uninsured? Florida KidCare is the state’s children’s health insurance program for uninsured children ages birth through 18. Applications are being accepted throughout the year. Eligibility for Florida KidCare is based on the household size and family income. Most families pay $15 or $20 per month, or nothing at all. Some families may not be eligible for this reduced price premium and may be offered a full pay option under MediKids or Healthy Kids. For more information or for an application call 1-888-540-5437 or go to http://www.floridakidcare.org/. No child should be uninsured!

Warning To Parents: Never Dilute Infant Formula

5

My Favorite Colors!

Health officials and doctors are warning parents about the danger of watering down infant formula, even a little bit.

Find the following hidden words:

Too much water can be dangerous, even fatal, for an infant.

BLACK BLUE BROWN GREEN ORANGE PINK PURPLE RED WHITE YELLOW

A Florida mother recently warned others after she almost killed her 5-month-old son by adding extra water to his powdered formula in an attempt to stretch her supply of formula. Infant formula is made to provide a specific ratio of nutrients based on following precise mixing instructions. By adding extra water nutrients are diluted, putting babies at risk for malnourishment or water intoxication. Governmental assistance programs may not always provide enough to cover expenses, especially in this bad economy, but diluting the formula is not the answer. Parents who are facing this problem should contact their local Resource and Referral office by dialing 211 to see what other assistance might be available.

Finger Paint

Let your child finger paint with Jell-O. It comes in a variety of vibrant colors and is nontoxic! Babies can paint on paper plates for easy clean up. Remember, it’s the process that’s important, not the finished product. Try chocolate pudding too!
