Why United Way? Success By 6 and all of our United Way of Central Florida partners are advancing the common good in Polk County by providing help today in ways that strengthen tomorrow. Our work ensures that children are ready to learn when they enter school, stay engaged in learning and graduate able to compete, that they are nurtured by families that have the financial stability to support both their basic needs and future success. No other single organization has the scope, expertise and influence to bring together hundreds of human services agencies, government, businesses, private foundations and dedicated volunteers around a common vision of creating maximum impact and achieving long-lasting results. Why United Way? We all want to have the greatest possible impact on our community and the issues that we care about. Join the movement. Through United Way, you unite your hopes and strengths with others to accomplish more than any of us can alone.

1. Because when you hold them and give them this attention, they know you love them! 2. Because reading to them will encourage them to become readers! 3. Because children’s books today are so good that they are fun for even adults. 4. Children’s book illustrations often rank with the best, giving them a lifelong feeling for good art. 5. Books are one way of passing on your moral values to your children. Readers should know how to put themselves in another’s shoes. 6. Because, until they learn to read themselves, they will think you are magic! 7. Because every teacher and librarian they ever encounter will thank you! 8. Because, for the short space of time, they will stay clean and quiet. 9. Because it’s the sweetest memory they’ll ever have! 10. Because, if you do, they may let “you” read in peace.

Reasons To Read To Your Child!
Let Your Child Pick The Book! The quickest way to kill the love of reading is to force kids to read books they do not like. Books are not just for school readiness and learning to read; they can and should be fun and enjoyable for a LIFETIME of learning. (Especially if you want kids to see them as an alternative to video games and TV!) How would you feel if you were forced to read books your boss picked out for you at your beach vacation?

What Can You Do To Help Your Pre-School Or Kindergarten Child Succeed In School? You can throw away the coloring books, burn the workbooks, shred the ditto sheets, hide the battery-operated toys and unplug the TV. Every child can discover the world with energy and wonder – but only if grownups don’t get in the way. Adults get excited when a child sings the ABC’s. Children get excited when they see an ant carrying a huge crumb across the crack in the sidewalk. If you encourage your child to tell Grandma about the ant, he will develop more language skills than he ever would singing the ABC’s. Ask him to draw a picture of the ant. Encourage him to scribble, write or dictate the story as you write the words. Make a book with several pictures of the ant. Where is the ant going? What will it do with the crumb? Your child just wrote her first book. He is an author and an illustrator!
Thank you Mosaic for your continued support in getting books into the hands of children!

Talk, Talk, Talk!
I was excited recently when I saw a young lady at the grocery store with a toddler in the cart. She was talking to her daughter all the way up and down the aisles, pointing out things they had passed and asking questions like “What color are those apples? What else is red?”
You rarely see this everyday learning experience called speech anymore! All too often, the parents I see are connected to cell phones, not their young children. Parents seem to have stopped talking with their young children, causing them to lose out on the eye contact, facial expression and overall feedback that is essential for early communication development. Put down your cell phone and look your child squarely in the eye as they share their thoughts with you.
Are You Traveling Over The Holidays? Make Time Fly With This Classic Game Memory Game: This is a great game for all ages. The first person says, “I’m packing a suitcase, and I’m going to bring…” and lists the first item. Each person adds a new item and repeats all previous ones. For older kids, try packing items in alphabetical order. The first person packs an apple, the second packs a ball and an apple, and so on.
