Selection of the publisher: with Patrick Labarrere in Ethiopia. PETITE INTERVIEW Could you please tell us about yourself? I am from the Arcachon Basin in the southwest of France. Very attached to this origin, with resin grandparents (harvesting resin from pines) and my father oyster farmer like my brother now. As for me, I took a different direction between catering and aeronautics. The photo came a little later, „diligently“ and „passionately“. For me, a good photo is quite simply an image which sensitizes us, which touches, which awakens in us a question, beauty, anger ... What do you like to photo most: landscapes, still-life, portraits, or something else? I practice landscape photography, „reportage“ whether in France or abroad; and also the portrait. The wedding photo or the like I do not practice or only to help out friends. Which one is your favorite lens and why do you prefer it? Depending on the style, I use a 24 - 70mm f2.8, a 70 200mm f2.8, a 35mm f2.8, an 85mm f1.4. I really like fixed focal lengths; this forces you to move, to look for angles constantly while turning around the subject etc. I don‘t exhibit much, mainly in Bordeaux and also in my restaurants on the Arcachon Basin. A new one is underway with the creation of a photo festival in my town, hopefully in 2022. Who influenced you the most? Is there any other photographer that you considers as a kind of idol? A lot of photographer inspires me, social networks allow us to discover things. I constantly research and try to evolve, to progress, to find subjects or series; and to show to discuss and understand how people feel about a photo.

ISP MAGAZINE NEW YEAR #01_12 | 2022 How did you get into Travel Photography? Tell us something about you. My encounter with the world of photography happened in a totally casual way. For several years I was a professional golfer, but a serious back injury forced me to leave the sport. I have always been passionate about art, and also about traveling and getting to know other cultures; so I thought maybe I could try doing it with the company of a camera ... the crush was immediate! Nothing in this life makes me feel happier than seeing the world through my lenses.

How has photography connected you with the ancient local cultures and their traditions? Since I was a child, those distant and exotic worlds from which I learned through reading have caught powerfully my attention; having had the opportunity to see them as an adult through my cameras has made my connection with them very deep. My great eagerness of being able to portray the people who inhabit them led me to visit such ancient places as Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, India, China … Do you have a memorable anecdote in the lands of spirits and magical ceremonies? So many! One of the things I like the most about my job is being able to connect with people who are totally different from me. I often try to chat with them to find out more about their lives, and this has given me magical moments. But the one that touched my heart the most was the brief encounter with an old woman from Tibet. During a drive back to Lhasa I saw her in the middle of nowhere with a small herd of sheep; I immediately asked the driver to stop so I could take a picture of her. I approached her and asked her with signs if I could portray her; she agreed with the sweetest smile I had ever seen. After two or three shots I shook her hand to say goodbye and thank her... and she did not let go of me for at least a minute! She looked me straight in the eye with her adorable face full of wrinkles that told a thousand stories, a warm, frank and direct look that reached my heart... and so she stayed, shaking my hand with all the love in the world for several seconds. Charles Chojnacki Born in Brussels in 1957, he is a self-taught enthusiast who, alongside a so-called conventional professional life, has always used photography as a means of expression. First travel, then reporting. For several years he worked, travelling the world, on a report illustrating the 50's through festivals, where people living in their time, have their heart set in another. He held his first exhibition in 2012 and a book was published on the subject in 2015: "50's TODAY" with a preface by the writer Patrick Roegiers. The book was a great success with the press and public. He was recognised by renowned websites and magazines such as the famous "Photo" and "Réponses photos" which will award him in 2020. It was also in this year that he received the first prize from Deutsche Bank during the "Shoot for Good" exhibition. In 2021, he published a book based on a several-week immersion during COVID-19 at the Erasmus hospital in Brussels, this book will be distributed
to all 5,000 people in this hospital as a thank you for their dedication. While reportage and travel have always been part of his photographic DNA, it was the acquisition of a Leica that pushed him to undertake more personal work. His confidence grew with the recognition of some of these images by "LFI – Leica Fotografie International""METROPOLIS" is his vision of our cities. A landscape made up of angles, curves, lines, and shadows in which only the outline of a man breaks the geometry since it is the only natural form in this universe able to be lost in all the geometry. What if it was this sense of confusion that brought about the feeling of loneliness seen in his images? First in black & white, now he is pursuing this theme in colour. Charles Chojnacki turns this reality into something less real and invites the observer to make their own way, to compare their imagination with his own and perhaps to see something other than what is presented. www.metropolis-photography.eu
