LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BY MARK ALEXANDER

Milestones. We’ve been thinking about them all year. Milestones, of course, are those road markers created by the Romans, to help them know how far they had traversed on a road in a single day. Today, mile markers are the same thing for us, though contrary to the Romans, we don’t stencil in granite the names of our emperors. Last May we invited everyone to help us celebrate a milestone. We, the United Way of Midland, was 70 years young. Since our early beginnings, when a group of concerned Midlanders began to invest their resources to enhance the quality of life for others, we’ve been about milestones. They created a value system and legacy that continues now into this generation, and hopefully beyond it. They chose to make community investments that helped change the trajectory of another Midlander’s life story through their concern and philanthropy.

Those years, captured in this publication and our campaign video, represent a milestone. It marks for all of us 70 years of making a difference in the lives of Midlanders. It marks for all of us a united effort to change lives for the better, making us a community envied by others in less intentional places. It also, as milestones do, reminds us the journey isn’t over. What hasn’t changed, however, is the extreme generosity of Midlanders like, well, all of us. We have all been part of changing the story of another as we united community resources with identified needs. Currently, I’ve also been thinking about millstones, those heavy, grinding and crushing pieces of stone used to create oil, flour, and cornmeal for use and consumption. As a community, there are still those whose lives need a change of story, someone to make

a difference in their lives. Their situations are the ones we seek to change; their stories are the ones we want to write a new chapter in; their lives the ones we want to improve. Without all of you, the milestones signal just another day to feel as though the millstones of ill health, lack of self-sufficient living, and poor education will drag them down. Interesting to me is the fact that it only takes one letter to change one word to another. Going from millstone to milestone is always about small changes making big differences. Again, let’s commit ourselves to the next 70 years of changing those stories. Thank you for connecting your gifts with those in need.

Leadership Development Experience

MIDLAND CHILDREN'S REHABILITATION CENTER Hippotherapy Program

In September of 2017, the Cadette Group of Troop #38823 completed the most prestigious Girl Scout Award a Cadette or Cadette group can earn, a Silver Award. The Cadettes built a Blessing Pantry with nonperishable food and household items given freely to any Midland family in need. They have been able to sustain it not only through the Girl Scout community but also with the help of the Boy Scouts, Solid Rock Fellowship Congregation and the Midland community. These Cadettes are a true example of leadership, collaborative community spirit and service in action.

7-year-old Gibson has Cerebral Palsy Hemiplegia, affecting the left side of his body. Gibson can walk independently but he limps and he couldn’t use his left hand for functional activities. Using his left hand was hard, would take longer and many times he wasn't accurate. Gibson neglected his hand and didn't do well with new activities. After a few months of being at Midland Children’s Rehabilitation Center, Gibson’s therapist recommended therapy on horseback. In hippotherapy Gibson was able to sit up straighter on horseback, engage his core and even use his hand for reaching and playing. His mom, Carrie, says, “Now Gibson tries more things! He uses his left hand more, helping with writing & self-care, it’s almost second nature." The horse’s movement improves trunk strength, endurance & can be used to shift weight to the left side for more awareness & use of that side. “I just see it all come together for him while he is riding. It brings him true joy! I am so impressed with the equine program at MCRC,” says Carrie. “The environment is so safe & organized. The fact that we get this all at no charge is a huge blessing.”

CASA DE AMIGOS Health Services

At the Senior Citizen Valentine’s Dance, Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez were voted King and Queen Valentine by all of their friends. This couple has made so many friends since being a part of Casa de Amigos. They even moved into a senior citizen community where all of their new friends live. They are also thankful to receive a healthy free meal every day at Casa de Amigos.

Supportive Transitional Housing

Jean, a 39 year old single mother from Houston, moved to Midland with her 6 month old daughter in October 2015 to pursue a job. She took a leap of faith and moved here blindly, with no family or friends close by. She managed to find a one bedroom apartment for $1,000 per month. After living paycheck to paycheck, Jean was forced to make the tough decision between buying the necessities her baby needed or paying her rent. Soon after, they were evicted and living in her car. She and her daughter slept in her Nissan Versa at the truck stop near Coahoma. She searched women’s homeless shelters and found Midland Fair Havens where she set up an appointment immediately. They placed her and her daughter in a hotel room until she was accepted into the program. Midland Fair Havens has helped her feel safe, loved and comforted. After a 20 year break, she re-enrolled in college and graduated with her Associate’s Degree in May 2017 from Midland College. She is now attending UTPB and majoring in Social Work, where she currently has a 3.76 GPA and is set to graduate May 2019. She also serves as a mentor and “big sister” to the other women in the program at MFH.

Community Initiatives are a joint effort between United Way of Midland and other community partners that address an identified need in Midland: Club Read keeps children engaged and reading during the summer to prevent summer reading loss. Families Forward Transitional Housing aims to break the cycle of generational poverty by moving families from homelessness to permanent housing. Ready to Read, also known as the Literacy Liaison, works in schools with our youngest students to focus on fundamental reading skills.

The 16th Annual Bustin' Clay for United Way clay shoot took place at Jake's Clays on Friday, August 18th. This year's event was presented by XTO Energy and Concho Resources. POWER OF THE PURSE

POWER OF THE PURSE KEYNOTE SPEAKER SONIA MANZANO The 4th Annual Power of the Purse was held on Wednesday, October 25th at the Midland Country Club. Over 150 women joined together for an afternoon filled with lunch, mimosas, purse raffles and more. This year's keynote speaker featured Sonia Manzano. You may know Sonia as “Maria” on Sesame Street, where she played a lovable mom and friend to millions of children (and puppets) for decades. Sonia won a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award, has garnered 15 Emmys for writing children’s television scripts, and has written critically-praised books for children and young adults. Our Power of the Purse event raises funds to help support one of our community initiatives, "Ready to Read," which provides books, supplies and a reading liaison to our littlest Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Money raised from this event ensures that more children are on grade level reading.

SPECIAL DAYS AT UNITED WAY PERMIAN BASIN DAY OF GIVING Tuesday, November 28th was the sixth annual #GivingTuesday across the nation. The community joined the United Way of Midland and United Way of Odessa for the Permian Basin Day of Giving - 24 hours to come together and help our neighbors, friends, family and co-workers. Our goal was to raise $5,000 to provide quality health, education and self-sufficiency programming in the Permian Basin. Together, the Permian Basin Giving Day raised over $6,000 with the help of SouthWest Bank and their generous match!

DAY OF ACTION: BOOK DRIVE United Way Day of Action is an annual invitation for people and organizations around the world to ‘Live United’ and take action to address a variety of challenges. Each year, communities come together to harness the volunteer spirit and improve the conditions in which they live.

Did you know that 61% of children from lowincome families have no books at home? On June 21st, United Way of Midland teamed up with several companies to host book drives. These books were then donated to UTPB: First 5 to help stock their "Little Free Libraries," Camp Fire West Texas, and the Midland YMCA for students enrolled in their summer programs. Thank you to everyone who hosted a book drive, donated books and helped sort and deliver the books to the organizations. Because of YOU, we were able to donate 5,656 books!

We developed a great working relationship with UW and 7 years later in 2008 we broke ground on The Springboard Center which was a 21 bed residential Drug and Alcohol Treatment Hospital. The ADT Society of Midland was founded in 1988 with 15 charter members. Members share a passion for investing in our community and making a difference. In 2017, the ADT Society of Midland had 44 members. Together, these foundations and individuals contributed over $700,000 to the 2017 Annual Campaign. 2017 MIDLAND LEADERSHIP CIRCLE Leadership givers set the course for others. In our community, many generous and caring individuals andÂ foundations have partnered with the United Way of Midland to change lives. By making an annual minimum contribution of $1,000 or 1.5% of annual income, Leadership givers are an integral part of our efforts to solve community problems and bring measurable, lasting change to the lives of thousands of Midlanders each year.

EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN COORDINATORS

The Employee Campaign Coordinator (ECC) is a United Way of Midland advocate in the workplace who encourages co-workers to create a stronger community by planning, organizing, and giving to the Annual Campaign. An ECC is the foundation of the work United Way accomplishes in our community, as they are the gatekeeper to the companies and organizations who generously give to the bulk of United Way fundraising efforts. FORE a good cause! Pioneer Natural Resources of Midland hosted a miniature golf fundraiser benefitting United Way. Employees designed themed holes including super hero cutouts, girl scout cookies and the Texas Tech mascot.

UPS hosted a golf tournament in Big Spring this year to support both Big Spring and Midland United Ways. The tournament was in addition to the UPS annual campaign in Midland where almost $13,000 was raised.

CNB employees support UWM with their dollars, but also with their volunteer efforts each summer. In 2017, bank locations competed to see which could collect the most books to distribute to community agencies serving kids.
