WELCOME

Welcome to a remarkable year in the life of the UW School of Music. In our 2013-14 concert season, we welcome new and notable faculty and launch important collaborations with organizations in the Seattle and UW arts communities. These new developments foretell wonderful enrichment opportunities for our students, audiences, and all who benefit from the School of Music and its activities. I invite you to read all of the details contained in this brochure and to partake of the offerings on our events calendar, but meanwhile, a few highlights are worthy of special mention. We kick off the academic year by joining with local arts organization Earshot Jazz to celebrate two very notable additions to our Jazz Studies faculty—guitarist Bill Frisell as an affiliate professor of music and drummer Ted Poor as a full time artist-in-residence. Both figure prominently in a string of concerts in early November, presented in conjunction with Earshot Jazz and the Earshot Jazz Festival (page 2). We are thrilled this year to announce a residency by Seattle production company Pacific MusicWorks (PMW) and to welcome PMW Artistic Director Stephen Stubbs to our faculty. The first production of PMW’s residency at the School of Music, a co-presentation of Handel’s Semele, runs May 16, 17, and 18 at Meany Theater (page 3). David Alexander Rahbee joins us this year as conductor of the UW Symphony, and Seattle Symphony Music Director Ludovic Morlot assumes leadership of our orchestral conducting program. Both conductors take a turn at the podium during our February 14 UW Symphony concert (pages 12-13). We join with the UW World Series in March to host the return of New York’s JACK Quartet, which concludes a weeklong residency at the School of Music with two distinct concerts March 15 at the Meany Studio Theater (page 4). Our faculty musicians make frequent guest appearances at performances throughout the season and in their own solo concerts (pages 10-11). Our students, motivated by their proximity to great music and great musicianship, continue to demonstrate their own, remarkable musical development. Their discoveries and their progress are inspiring to behold (pages 12-19). Music-making by its very nature encourages alliance, collaboration, and partnership as well as the intense focus of each individual musician. Meet Hapsari Kusumajaya, The UW’s new gamelan Room 58 in the basement of the Music Building is now home to a beautiful set of bronze Javanese gamelan instruments, purchased from the Javanese shadow puppet master and gamelan musician Ki Midiyanto. The gamelan, which Ki Midiyanto named Hapsari Kusumajaya, traveled to Seattle by sea from the island of Java in Indonesia, arriving at the UW in March. Assistant Professor Christina Sunardi of the School of Music’s Ethnomusicology Program (pictured above) says the acquisition will enable her to teach gamelan ensemble courses, use the instruments for lecture-demonstrations and workshops, invite master gamelan musicians from Indonesia for residencies at the School of Music, and organize performances that feature the use of these instruments. Sunardi says she also looks forward to continued collaboration with the University of Washington Southeast Asia Center, the Seattle ensemble Gamelan Pacifica, Seattle Pacific University, and the local Indonesian community in the research, teaching, performance and promotion of Indonesian arts and culture. After violist Eyvind Kang and one-of-a-kind cartoonist Jim Woodring join him in an opening performance, Bill Frisell presents his Big Sur Quintet, as riveting a band as any working today. Joining the guitarist are Jenny Scheinman on violin, Eyvind Kang on viola, Hank Roberts on cello, and Rudy Royston on drums. Meet the Artist: Stephen Stubbs The School of Music gains new expertise in early music with the appointment of lutenist and baroque opera specialist Stephen Stubbs to the School of Music faculty. Stubbs, artistic director of Seattle’s Pacific MusicWorks, joins the School of Music faculty in fall 2013 as a senior artist-in-residence and makes his public debut at the UW in May 2014 as artistic director and conductor of a Pacific MusicWorks and School of Music co-production of Handel’s 1743 opera Semele. A Seattle native and UW alumnus, Stubbs gained international prominence as an opera director and lutenist during a 30-year career in Europe. Since his return to Seattle in 2006, he has made his mark as a musical director, guest conductor, and founder of organizations devoted to the study and production of baroque opera and oratorio. Stubbs will apply his expertise in that area at the UW during the 2013-14 academic year, preparing School of Music students in voice and instrumental performance to perform side by side with professional musicians and opera singers in the Semele production, set for May 16-18, 2014 at Meany Theater. “I’m thrilled to be joining the faculty of the UW School of Music,” Stubbs says of his appointment, “and am honored to be entrusted with a revival of the baroque ideals of apprenticeship and mentoring, but made specifically relevant to the contemporary cultural scene and the needs of today’s students.”

Saturday, March 15 An evening with the JACK Quartet The School of Music, in collaboration with the UW World Series, presents an evening with the JACK Quartet, one of the most exciting chamber groups on the international scene performing the music of today. The New York-based group caps off a week-long residency at the School of Music with an evening of two distinct concerts of composed and improvised music performed by the quartet, along with visiting artists from the Six Tones ensemble and School of Music faculty Richard Karpen, Juan Pampin, Cuong Vu, and Ted Poor.

Swiss composer/conductor André Richard worked closely with Luigi Nono, one of the most notable composers of the 20th Century. A world-wide authority on the composer and his music, Richard concludes a week-long residency at the School of Music with this concert featuring works by Nono and others. Artist-in-Residence Barry Lieberman presents a series of recitals and master classes by noted performers, including Seattle Symphony players, touring symphony musicians, young innovators, and rising classical music stars.

The University of Washington and faculty artist Michael Partington host this series of master classes for students and young professional artists. Classes follow performances the previous night at the Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. All classes are open to the public for observation.

Craig Sheppard concludes his Mostly Brahms series with the first and last published solo piano pieces by Brahms, the Opus 4 Scherzo and the two great sets of Klavierstücke, Opuses 118 and 119. Rounding off the concert is Schumann’s Fantasy in C, Opus 17, arguably the greatest large-scale work for solo piano of the nineteenth century. MT 7:30 pm $20 ($12 students and seniors)

Faculty pianist Dainius Vaicekonis presents two recitals in 2013-14. On Dec. 8, he is joined by his wife, Asta, and UW colleagues Donna Shin and Ron Patterson in “Cultural Crossroads,” a concert featuring legendary American composers and artists with Lithuanian heritage. On April 13, he performs a recital of variation forms featuring G. F. Handel’s Chaconne, Leopold Godowsky’s Passacaglia, Symphonic Etudes by Robert Schumann, and variation sets by Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. BA 4:30 pm $15

Meet the Conductor: David Alexander Rahbee That new face on the conductor’s podium belongs to David Alexander Rahbee, director of orchestral activities at the School of Music for the 201314 season. A native of Boston, Rahbee studied conducting at the New England Conservatory, Université de Montréal, Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, and at the Pierre Monteux School. He also studied violin and composition at Indiana University.

The recipient of numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, Dr. Rahbee has appeared in concert with orchestras such as the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Kammerphilharmonie BerlinBrandenburg, Orchestre de la Francophonie (Canada), the Dresden Hochschule orchestra, the Boston New Music Initiative, Orquesta Sinfónica de Loja (Ecuador), Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Savaria Symphony Orchestra (Hungary), Cool Opera of Norway (members of the Stavanger Symphony), Schönbrunner Schloss Orchester (Vienna), the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, and the Divertimento Ensemble of Milan. At the UW, he will conduct the University Symphony as well as work closely with Seattle Symphony Music Director Ludovic Morlot, appointed recently to oversee the UW’s orchestral conducting program. “We are pleased to welcome David Alexander Rahbee as our director of orchestral activities,” says School of Music Director Richard Karpen. “He is a talented young conductor, and his collaborative approach will benefit our students greatly.”

Where to buy tickets In advance: Purchase tickets in advance, beginning September 5, through the UW Arts Ticket Office or online. UW Arts Ticket Office: Purchase tickets by cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard, Monday through Friday, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm Location: 1313 NE 41st St, Seattle WA 98105 Phone: 206-543-4880 (1-800-859-5342 outside Seattle) FAX: 206-685-4141 Online: Go to www.music.washington.edu (click on “Events,” then on the concert you want to attend) or www.meany.org. There is a $1 processing fee per ticket for mail, fax, phone, and online orders. No processing fee is charged for tickets purchased at the UW Arts Ticket Office window. At the performance: The box offices open one hour prior to performance for ticket sales and will-call tickets. You can avoid long lines by purchasing tickets in advance or arriving early. Exchanges Exchanges are valid only for opera tickets, with a handling fee of $1 per ticket. Exchanges must be completed at least 24 hours in advance of the date on the ticket. We regret that we cannot give refunds for unused tickets. Location Meany Theater and Meany Studio Theater are in Meany Hall, on the southwest corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”). Meany Hall’s main entrance leads directly into Meany Theater. Enter Meany Studio Theater by taking the outside stairs at the northeast corner of Meany Hall to the sunken courtyard. The Jones Playhouse is accessible via ramps and elevator from the main entrance at 4045 University Way NE. Disability access Meany Theater is accessible via ramps and elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage (NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE). For Meany Studio Theater, park on level C1 of the garage and use the ramp to that theater’s lobby.

Brechemin Auditorium

Where to buy tickets At the performance: There are no advance ticket sales for events in Brechemin Auditorium. Tickets go on sale (cash or check only) in the auditorium’s lobby 30 minutes before events. Location Brechemin Auditorium is on the east end of the School of Music’s main floor. Disability access There is a ramp at the west (main) entrance as well as access at the School of Music’s northeast entrance.

Walker-Ames Room

Where to buy tickets At the performance: There are no advance ticket sales for events in the Walker-Ames Room. Tickets go on sale (cash or check only) just outside the room 30 minutes before events. Location The Walker-Ames Room is on the second floor of Kane Hall, in the northeast corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”). Disability access An elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage goes to the first and second floors of Kane Hall, and a ramp provides access at the east entrance to the Walker-Ames Room.

Great Live Music, Great Low Price

The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, Brechemin Auditorium, the Walker-Ames Room, and the Jones Playhouse. Notecard prices for the 2013-14 season are $90 for the general public, $75 for UW employees and UW Alumni Association members, and $60 for students and seniors. With nearly 100 Notecard concerts this season, it doesn’t take many to cover the cost of your pass! A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis. * Be sure to allow plenty of time for parking and getting to the concert location. Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so the earlier you arrive, the better your chance of getting a seat. Order your Notecard using the form on the inside back cover, or by calling the UW Arts Ticket Office (206-543-4880 or 1-800859-5342 outside Seattle).
