2015-16

SEASON

WELCOME The School of Music throws its doors wide open in 2015-16 with a gift to music-lovers in our community. We invite you to join us at the UW’s Brechemin Auditorium and the Walker-Ames Room of Kane Hall this year for around 50 concerts and other music-related events we are hosting free of charge. This gift is made possible through the generosity of School of Music friend Mina B. Person, a member of the Brechemin family that has made so much possible at the School of Music for many years. In addition to Mina’s wonderful gift, we also are reducing ticket prices for all of our student ensemble performances at Meany Hall and the Jones Playhouse, all in the spirit of fostering the growth of a broad inclusive community devoted to music and scholarship. In our upcoming season, the musicians of the UW Symphony Orchestra and conductor David Alexander Rahbee will work with esteemed faculty and special guest artists of international renown. An appearance by former New York Philharmonic concertmaster Glenn Dicterow (Feb. 12) at Meany Theater also features a conducting appearance by Seattle Symphony Music Director (and UW head of orchestral conducting) Ludovic Morlot. Guitarist Bill Frisell is joined by Jazz Studies faculty on Jan. 14 in a performance with the orchestra and on Jan. 15 with the UW Big Band. Student winners of our annual Concerto Competitions (Nov. 17, 20, and 23) solo with the orchestra on select dates throughout the season. And the orchestra joins with the combined UW Chamber Singers and University Chorale (April 25) on the mainstage of Benaroya Hall to perform works by Gluck and Haydn, conducted by senior artist-in-residence Stephen Stubbs and David Alexander Rahbee. Our partnership with early music production company Pacific MusicWorks—a UW ensemble in residence— gains new traction this season with three of PMW’s four season events to be held at Meany Theater. In addition to a fully staged performance of Gluck’s Orphée on May 20, 21, and 22, PMW will stage performances of Handel’s Messiah (Dec. 12 and 13) and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Feb. 28), performances that will involve our choral and instrumental students working under the baton of the Grammy-winning PMW artistic director and School of Music faculty artist Stephen Stubbs. Other performances of note in our concert calendar include recitals and concerts at Meany Theater by some of our faculty musicians, including violist Melia Watras (Jan. 26), pianist Cristina Valdés (Nov. 3), drummer Ted Poor (Oct. 15), and pianist Robin McCabe (Feb. 18). We also are thrilled this year to present newly appointed artist-in-residence Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, cello, in her debut Meany Theater performance (Nov. 16). There is much more to be found in our season—music from around the world presented by our Ethnomusicology program, series devoted to Beethoven and Schubert, and innovative works that extend the boundaries of the music of our time. We invite you to explore the vast range of opportunities to listen and learn. Richard Karpen

Director, University of Washington School of Music

UW MUSIC & PACIFIC MUSICWORKS

Pacific MusicWorks is a resident organization of the University of Washington School of Music. Artistic director Stephen Stubbs serves on the faculty as senior artist-in-residence. Handel: Messiah

DEC 12, 13 (SAT & SUN)

Directed by Gilbert Blin Choreography by Anna Mansbridge Conducted by Stephen Stubbs

Aaron Sheehan  Orphée Amanda Forsythe  Eurydice Valerie Vinzant  Amour

Orpheus, the mythical singer, is the symbol of the power of music.

At the untimely death of his beloved Eurydice, he descends to the underworld on a heroic mission to bring her back to the land of the living. His impassioned singing wins her release, but he is then put to a test at which he, with his impetuous feelings, cannot succeed. Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice was originally written for a castrato in the title role, but when he reshaped it for Paris, the composer cast Orpheus as a high tenor, the traditional hero of French opera. This presentation features tenor Aaron Sheehan, fresh from his Grammy-winning performance as Orphée in Charpentier’s opera, in his role-debut as Gluck’s Orphée. With a new staging by French director Gilbert Blin, celebrated opera director of the Boston Early Music Festival, this production also features choreographer Anna Mansbridge and Grammy-winning conductor Stephen Stubbs. SCHUBERTIADE! DEC 6 (SUN) Pre-Concert Lecture: George Bozarth

The composer Franz Schubert’s brief, mysterious and wondrous life (he composed more than 1,000 works in 18 years!) was in essence an unfinished symphony. He died, at age 31, with his character not fully formed (but with more than 600 art songs composed). Yet, certainly, he was much more than an innocent tunesmith. This series, produced by piano professor Robin McCabe, explores aspects of Schubert’s life and music, within the rich context of Vienna and its Biedermeier culture. Each concert includes a pre-concert lecture by a UW faculty member and performances by top School of Music students.

NOTECARDS Your Season Pass to UW Music

The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, and the Jones Playhouse. Notecards for the 2015-16 season are $90, and are valid for admission to more than 60 of the 100-plus concerts on our season. A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis.** Be sure to allow plenty of time for parking and getting to the concert location. Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so the earlier you arrive, the better your chance
of getting a seat. Order your Notecard using the form on
the inside back cover, or by calling the UW Arts Ticket Office (206-543-4880 or 1-800-859-5342 outside Seattle). Notecards are not transferable, refundable, or replaceable. Please keep yours in a
safe place. Remember: Your School of Music Notecard will admit you to the Nov. 14 and April 17 Music of Today concerts by the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS). The following are not Notecard events: • Operas: Pénélope and Orphée • Pacific MusicWorks productions: Handel: Messiah; Vivaldi: Four Seasons • IMPFest VIII ** Seating for Notecard events in the Meany Studio Theater and Jones Playhouse is limited, but Notecard patrons may ensure their seating by contacting the ArtsUW Ticket Office before 5 pm the day of the performance (or on Friday at 5 pm for Saturday and Sunday performances).

Remember . . .

• Concerts, dates, artists, locations, and

programs are subject to change. For the latest information, check our online calendar (www.music.washington.edu) or Events Hotline (206-685-8384). • To ensure that you’ll receive a copy of next season’s School of Music brochure, just purchase an advance ticket for one of our events in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, the Jones Playhouse, or a School of Music Notecard, through the ArtsUW Ticket Office.* * Please refer to event listings in this brochure or at www.music.washington.edu for venue and ticketing information for off-campus venues.
