SEASON

WELCOME Our annual concert series fulfills many roles beyond providing music and scholarship to the citizens of our region. The dozens of free and low-cost performances and music-related events we present in 2016-17 represent performance and learning opportunities for students like the members of the Corda Quartet (shown below), one of two scholarship chamber groups representing the School of Music in 2016-17 (See page 11 to learn more about this year’s scholarship winners). The modest cost of admission to our performances—and the cost of our season subscription, the School of Music “Notecard”—helps to offset production costs and expenses affiliated with staging dozens of performances by large choral, orchestra and band ensembles, renowned guest artists, and esteemed faculty artists. In the coming year our students will perform with pianist Jonathan Biss, members of the Seattle Symphony, and guitarist Bill Frisell, among other notable guests. They will participate in a rare staging of Oedipus, a musical theater drama by 20th century composer Harry Partch that will be performed in its entirety on the composer’s

handmade instruments. Our students will perform alongside opera professionals under the baton of Grammy winning conductor Stephen Stubbs in a production of Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. And they will be inspired by their own teachers performing in various venues on campus and beyond. Your patronage helps to make possible this important part of our students’ UW education, and we appreciate your support. In 2016-17, we are again able to offer free admission to events in our season presented in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium, thanks to the generosity of Mina B. Person, a member of the Brechemin family that has made so much possible at the School of Music for many years. Fall Quarter Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Marisol Berríos-Miranda is joined by her students in a performance of music and dance from the Caribbean traditions, exploring the rhythms of salsa, plena, bomba, merengue, and rumba. BA 7:30 pm FREE

Winter Quarter Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Paco Diez, considered one of the most important musicians in Judeo-Spanish music, is joined by his students in this performance of Sephardic folk music from the Iberian musical tradition. BA 7:30 pm FREE

Spring Quarter Visiting Artist Manimou Camara, master drummer and founder of Seattle-based percussion and dance company Dounia Djembe, performs with his students in this concert of music and dance of Guinea, West Africa. MT 7:30 pm $20 ($10 students/seniors)

MEET THE ARTIST: MANIMOU CAMARA A master drummer and dancer from Guinea, West Africa who now calls Seattle home, Spring Quarter Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Manimou Camara specializes in several percussive instruments, including the dynamic hand drum called djembe, three bass drums called dunun, sangban, and kenkeni, and the kringni. Founder of Dounia Djembe, a Seattle based percussion and dance company, Camara is a member of the Kpelle people and Malinke ethnic groups. Manimou Camara began studying the music and dance of his native Guinea, West Africa at the age of twelve. His primary education was spent with Sekou Dico Sylla (now a Vancouver, BC resident), Karamoko Daman (Karamo Dama) and nationally recognized Ballet Saamato. He has played lead dunun for Mohamed Kemoko Sano’s world-renowned Ballet Merveille and conducted rhythm and dance camps for people from Europe, Japan, and the United States.

FREQUENCY DEBUT UW faculty members Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir (cello) and Melia Watras (viola), and Pacific Northwest Ballet concertmaster Michael Jinsoo Lim (violin) unite as Frequency, a dynamic new trio presenting two provocative programs in 2016-17. OCT 23 (SUN) The Kreutzer Sonata Frequency presents a program of interconnected works by Beethoven, Janáček and Watras, plus improvised music in the group’s UW debut. UW Symphony with Jonathan Biss FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2016 The UW Symphony (David Alexander Rahbee, conductor) explores the dynamic extremes of Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto with one of the composer’s most ardent interpreters, pianist Jonathan Biss, who the Toronto Globe and Mail calls “one of the most striking pianists of the new generation.” Known for his highly innovative online course on Beethoven’s piano sonatas developed as a faculty member of his alma mater, the Curtis Institute of Music, Biss appears with the orchestra on the eve of his Dec. 10 performance on the UW’s President’s Piano Series (see meanycenter.org for details). Pacific MusicWorks is a resident organization of the University of Washington School of Music. Artistic Director Stephen Stubbs serves on the faculty as senior artist-in-residence.

In the late 17th century Henry Purcell had a musical life of Mozartian proportions – tragically short yet unbelievably brilliant. Synthesizing all the best elements of contemporary English, French and Italian music, he created the first enduring English operas. Unlike the larger semi-operas, Fairy Queen and King Arthur, (which include spoken texts between the musical numbers), Dido and Aeneas was his only entirely musical opera, and is his best-known and most beloved work for the stage. PMW’s orchestra and soloists will team with the University of Washington Chamber Singers to present a full length version of this beloved opera that includes Purcell’s sublime Welcome songs for the King’s return to court. UW Symphony & Combined University Choirs Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2017 Murry Sidlin, creator and guest conductor Jewish prisoners in the Terezín Concentration Camp experienced the worst of human degradation yet performed Verdi’s Requiem 16 times with only a single smuggled score, including one performance before senior SS officers from Berlin and an International Red Cross delegation. Imprisoned conductor Rafael Schächter told the choir, “We will sing to the Nazis what we cannot say to them.” In this concert-drama, guest conductor Murry Sidlin leads the University Symphony and combined UW Chamber Singers and University Chorale in performing Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín. Sidlin, president and founder of The Defiant Requiem Foundation, conceived and created this concert-drama combining the music of Verdi with video testimony from survivors of the original Terezín chorus as well as footage from the 1944 Nazi propaganda film about Theresienstadt. From the Harry Partch Instrument Collection MAY 5, 6, 7 (FRI, SAT, SUN) Harry Partch: Oedipus: A Music Dance Drama

Twentieth century maverick composer Harry Partch turned Sophocles’ play Oedipus into a visual and aural extravaganza, combining spoken word, instrumentation, theater, and dance into a multi-genre theatrical work. Composed in the early 1950s and rarely performed anywhere, these special presentations bring to the Meany mainstage the combination of Partch’s handmade instruments with the enduring power of the composer’s unique artistic vision. DEC 2 (FRI) Luke Fitzpatrick: Cage and Partch

UW School of Music violinist Luke Fitzpatrick performs the John Cage Freeman Etudes for solo violin and the 17 Lyrics of Li Po for adapted viola and voice by Harry Partch, marking the first-ever performance of the work in its entirety on the composer’s original handmade instrument. UW Music and the Improvised Music Project (IMP) present IMPFest IX   Over the past nine years the student-led Improvised Music Project has instigated new directions in Seattle’s jazz and improvised music scene. The annual festival, which groups up-and-coming musicians, faculty  all-stars, and seasoned professionals of international renown,  is IMP’s  signature annual event.

The University of Washington School of Music and The Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) co-sponsor this series featuring groundbreaking new works and modern classics by faculty and guest composers.

OCT 26 (WED) Eighty and Ninety: Stuart Dempster and Bill Smith UW Music celebrates a half-century of collaborative music-making by two of its most-beloved faculty all-stars: Stuart Dempster and William O. “Bill” Smith, turning 80 and 90, respectively, in 2016. Performing original works from the early 1970s, including Smith’s Antiphony and Encounter and Dempster’s Didjeridervish, along with Robert Erickson’s General Speech for solo trombone (commissioned by Dempster in 1969), the professors emiriti revisit creative works of the past half-century while demonstrating the improvisational talents that made them both central figures in an exceptionally rich creative period in the history of the School of Music, as well as professional composer/musicians of international renown.

Faculty artists Stephen Stubbs (lute and baroque guitar) and Tekla Cunningham (violin) are driving forces behind the success of ensemble-in-residence Pacific MusicWorks, whose reputation for excellence has been confirmed through consistently high-quality programming at the UW and in the greater arts region. The musicians’ instrumental and improvisational agility is on display in this program of music performed in the “free and fantastic style”— the freeform, quasi-improvised violin music of the 17th century. Where to buy tickets In advance: Purchase tickets in advance, beginning September 9 through the ArtsUW Ticket Office or online. ArtsUW Ticket Office: Purchase tickets by cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard, Monday through Friday, 11 am – 6 pm Location: 1313 NE 41st St, Seattle WA 98105 Phone: 206-543-4880  (1-800-859-5342 outside Seattle) FAX: 206-685-4141 Online: Go to www.music.washington.edu (click on “Events,” then on the concert you want to attend) or www.artsuw.org. There is a $1 processing fee per ticket for mail, fax, phone, and online orders. No processing fee is charged for tickets purchased at the ArtsUW Ticket Office window. At the performance: The box offices open one hour prior to performance for ticket sales and will-call tickets. You can avoid long lines by purchasing tickets in advance or arriving early. Exchanges Exchanges are valid (for an alternate performance of the same event) only for opera tickets, with a handling fee of $1 per ticket. Exchanges must be completed at least  24 hours in advance of the date on the ticket. We regret that we cannot give refunds for unused tickets. Location Meany Theater and Meany Studio Theater are in Meany Hall, on the southwest corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”). Meany Hall’s main entrance leads directly into Meany Theater. Enter Meany Studio Theater by taking the outside stairs at the northeast corner of Meany Hall to the sunken courtyard. The Jones Playhouse is accessible via ramps and elevator from the main entrance at 4045 University Way NE. Disability access Meany Theater is accessible via ramps and elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage (NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE). For Meany Studio Theater, park on level C1 of the garage and use the ramp to that theater’s lobby.

NOTECARDS Your Season Pass to UW Music

Location The Walker-Ames Room is on the second floor of Kane Hall, in the northeast corner  of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”).

The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, and the Jones Playhouse. Notecards for the 2016-17 season are $90 ($75 for UW community members). A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis.** Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so arrive early for the best choice of seats. Order your Notecard using the form on  the inside back cover, or by calling the ArtsUW Ticket Office (206-543-4880 or 1-800-859-5342 outside Seattle). Notecards are not transferable, refundable, or replaceable. Disability access An elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage goes to the first and second floors of Kane Hall, and a ramp provides access at the east entrance to the Walker-Ames Room.

PARKING Parking for performances in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, the Walker-Ames Room, and Jones Playhouse Underground parking The entrance to the UW Central Plaza Parking Garage is at NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE, on the west side of campus. A $10 non-refundable flat rate is charged for evening events (4 pm or after).

Above-ground parking Enter the UW campus at NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE, near the Burke Museum. Stop at the gatehouse to pay (the evening rate is $5) and to obtain directions and a parking permit.

Ethnic Cultrl. Theatr

Parking for events in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium Enter the north end of campus (NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE), near the Burke Museum north entrance or via the east side of campus (Pend Oreille Road, off 25th Avenue NE) near University Village Shopping Center. Stop at the gatehouse to pay (the evening rate is $5); tell the parking specialist that you’re going to a School of Music event. You’ll receive directions to the nearest lot and a parking permit.

Parking for events at the UW’s Ethnic Cultural Theater The closest UW parking for events at the Ethnic Cultural Theater is Lot W12, located adjacent to the theater at 3930 Brooklyn Ave NE.

Pay for parking and obtain a permit at a UW gatehouse • 6 am to 9 pm Monday through Friday • 7 am to noon Saturday

Parking fees • $15 from 6 am to 5 pm weekdays or pay $3 per hour for four or fewer hours • $5 from 4 pm to 9 pm weekdays • $5 from 7 am to noon Saturdays • The Central Plaza Garage charges a  non-refundable flat-rate fee of $10  from 4 pm to 9 pm Monday through Friday and from 7 am to noon on Saturdays.
