WELCOME Our 2017-18 concert season highlights all the best things about the School of Music—namely, its students, faculty, and the many scholars and artists who visit here, whether for a day, a week, or much longer. The events included in the pages of this brochure represent a lively, eclectic community of artists and scholars immersed in the study, creation, and performance of great music. Great music is at its best in great venues and on Feb. 5 the UW Symphony (David Alexander Rahbee, director) performs on the main stage at Benaroya Hall, home of Seattle Symphony, joined by SSO Music Director (and UW head of conducting) Ludovic Morlot and faculty soloists Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, cello, and Cristina Valdés, piano, and guest violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim. Morlot returns March 1 to conduct the Modern Music Ensemble (Cristina Valdés, director) at Meany Theater. The venue is also home stage for a variety of inspiring faculty concerts—Robin and Rachelle McCabe (Jan. 11); Craig Sheppard (Feb. 23); Melia Watras and Atar Arad (March 28); and Craig Sheppard with Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir (April 16)—with other performances by our faculty in other settings on campus and beyond. Other highlights on our season include an evening with the Intercontinental Experimental Music Ensemble (Oct 25) with guests Garth Knox from France, Nguy ên ˜ Thanh Thuy from Vietnam, Stefan Östersjö from Sweden, the Cuong Vu Trio, and UW faculty Richard Karpen, Juan Pampin, and Bonnie Whiting; a tabla performance by the internationally renowned Zakir Hussain (Nov. 19), and the tenth annual

Improvised Music Project Festival with guitarist Bill Frisell and other notable guests (May 30, 31). Throughout this publication we feature photographs by Seattle photographer Steve Korn of the handmade instruments of 20th century American composer Harry Partch, whose Instrumentarium is in long-term residence at the School of Music under the curatorship of composer/scholar Charles Corey. In the coming year Corey joins with School of Music faculty, graduate students, and community members to present a variety of performances and special events centered around the instruments, with a Harry Partch Festival May 11-13 offering opportunities to see and hear more from this unique collection, including world premieres of new works composed for the instruments. We hope you will join us in celebrating this wonderful musical resource. Last year the School of Music lost a dear friend with the passing of Mina B. Person, a member of the Brechemin family whose generosity over the past five decades has made so much possible at the School of Music. Mina’s legacy of generosity continues in 2017-18 with her family’s support enabling the School to offer free admission to dozens of concert season events in Brechemin Auditorium. Mina’s love of music and her desire to share music with others endures with this generous gift, a most fitting tribute to an unforgettable friend and one that we are pleased to present to you. Enjoy! Fall Quarter Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Zakir Hussain is known in India and worldwide for his virtuosity in the fields of world music and percussion as a tabla player, percussionist and composer. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, he has enjoyed many historic collaborations with artists such as John McLaughlin and L. MEET THE ARTIST: SEPIDEH RAISSADAT

A key figure in the new generation of classical Persian vocalists, Sepideh Raissadat began studying Persian music at the age of 9 with the famous Iranian Diva Parissa and later with renowned masters Parviz Meshkatian and Mohammad Reza Lofti. With five critically acclaimed albums to her credit, Sepideh began her recording career at the age of 19 with an album with Parviz Meshkatian (Konj-e Saburi, 2000). Her international performance career has included engagements in Europe, notably with Italian musicians Franco Battiato, Andrea Parodi and Ensemble Maraghi. Sepideh pursued academic studies at the University of Toronto, obtaining an MA in Ethnomusicology and collaborating with prominent ensembles such as Nexus Percussion, Constantinople, and the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth. She is currently engaged in doctoral studies at the University of Toronto in addition to her performance career.

MEET THE ARTIST: RICARDO GARCIA

Born in Andalusia, Ricardo Garcia moved to France during the Franco era with his family when he was a young child. His family was musical, and he was taught to play guitar by his uncle Antonio when he was very young and learned to accompany his mother, the singer Maria del Carmen. Garcia appeared in his first concert at the age of nine, and since then has performed alone or with his aunt and uncle in all parts of France as well as internationally as a solo and ensemble artist. Garcia’s performances incorporate flamenco styles that range from free-flowing Alegrías and tangos to the emotive tientos and soleas. Arab influences as well as elements from Indian, African, South American and Caribbean music can be heard in his playing, as well as modern influences such as jazz, Latin jazz, bossa nova, and salsa, leading the Only magazine to describe his music as “a unique and devastatingly original, awe-inspiring sound.”

Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Zakir Hussain, tabla SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2017

The preeminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. A national treasure in his native India, he is one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians, renowned for his genre-defying collaborations. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Zakir’s contribution has been unique, with many historic and groundbreaking collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, the Diga Rhythm Band, Planet Drum, Tabla Beat Science, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, in trio with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer and, most recently, with Herbie Hancock. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve, touring internationally with great success by the age of eighteen. As a composer, he has scored music for numerous feature films, major events and productions. A Grammy award winner, he is the recipient of countless awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan, National Heritage Fellowship and Officier in France’s Order of Arts and Letters. In 2015, he was voted “Best Percussionist” by both the Downbeat Critics’ Poll and Modern Drummer’s Reader’s Poll. Known worldwide for his phenomenal mastery of the North Indian tabla drum as well as his ability to interact at the deepest imaginative levels with music and percussion genres of diverse cultures, Hussain is sure to dazzle in this evening concert featuring a tabla solo and his work with UW faculty and students. UW Symphony Orchestra With Jon Kimura Parker, piano FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2017 Known for his passionate artistry and engaging stage presence, pianist Jon Kimura Parker has performed as guest soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Wolfgang Sawallisch in Carnegie Hall, toured Europe with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Andre Previn, and shared the stage with Jessye Norman at Berlin’s Philharmonie. Parker is guest soloist on Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F Major on his Dec. 8 performance with the UW Symphony Orchestra (David Alexander Rahbee, conductor. UW Symphony & Combined University Choirs Works by Brahms and Debussy FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2018

Giselle Wyers and David Alexander Rahbee, conductors

Giselle Wyers and David Alexander Rahbee lead the combined UW Symphony Orchestra and combined University Choirs in a year-end program of music by Debussy and Brahms. Debussy’s La damoiselle élue, the composer’s first work for orchestra to be performed, premiered in Paris in 1893 and was decried by some critics as decadent and sensual, praised by others for delightful audacity. It is being presented here to commemorate 100 years since Debussy’s death. Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, a work in seven movements for orchestra, choir, and baritone soloist, is the composer’s longest work, created in the wake of his mother’s death in 1865. Harry Partch Festival FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY MAY 11, 12, & 13, 2018 Twentieth century American composer Harry Partch created an original musical world and hand-hewn instruments on which to perform his microtonal compositions, which continue to inspire and influence musicians and composers today. This festival celebrates the music and influence of this unique composer, whose hand-made musical instruments are in long-term residence at the UW under the direction of composer and Partch expert Charles Corey. Three distinct programs include premieres of new works composed for Partch’s instruments as well as rarely or never-before performed works from the composer’s archives. Other activities, including master classes, demos, and talks, complete this homage to a unique American artist. Seattle-area pianist Nathan Lee began playing the piano at age six and made his orchestral debut at the age of nine. He studies with Dr. Sasha Starcevich. Recent engagements include a performance with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on NPR’s From the Top, an appearance on Radio France with Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and an upcoming performance with the Seattle Symphony. Thirteen-year-old Yesong Sophie Lee, winner of the 2016 International Menuhin Competition, has been praised as “a huge talent” (Kulture Radio, Berlin) for her “beautiful sound” and her “pursuit of drama and excitement” (The Guardian, London). She has performed extensively in the United States and Europe, including concerti with the London Philharmonia and the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestras and a subscription series of concerts in the Seattle Symphony’s 2017-18 season. FACULTY CONCERTS SEP 27 (WED) Bonnie Whiting with Jennifer Torrence New Music for Singing/Speaking Percussionists

Percussion Studies Chair Bonnie Whiting joins percussionist Jennifer Torrence (Norway) in an evening of world premieres of music for speaking and singing percussionists. The program includes a work for crash cymbals, resonant feedback, and singing by Paula Matthusen, music for small electronic toys and deconstructed language by Bethany Younge, and a collaborative improvisation with DXARTS professor Afroditi Psarra featuring her signature wearable electronics and embroidered synthesizers. A Q&A with the performers and composers follows the program. Note: The duo also presents a free master class earlier in the day, 11:30 am, Meany Studio Theater. UW viola professor Melia Watras welcomes internationally renowned artist Atar Arad, her former teacher and fellow violist/composer, for a concert that centers on compositions by the two colleagues. Pairs will include works by Arad, Britten, Penderecki and Watras, with special guest violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim, concertmaster of Pacific Northwest Ballet. Where to buy tickets In advance: Purchase tickets in advance, beginning September 11 through the ArtsUW Ticket Office or online. There is a $1 processing fee per ticket for mail, fax, phone, and online orders. No processing fee is charged for tickets purchased at the ArtsUW Ticket Office window. At the performance: The box offices open one hour prior to performance for ticket sales and will-call tickets. You can avoid long lines by purchasing tickets in advance or arriving early. Exchanges Exchanges are valid (for an alternate performance of the same event) with a handling fee of $1 per ticket. Exchanges must be completed at least 24 hours in advance of the date on the ticket. We regret that we cannot give refunds for unused tickets. Location Meany Theater and Meany Studio Theater are in Meany Hall, on the southwest corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”). Meany Hall’s main entrance leads directly into Meany Theater. Enter Meany Studio Theater by taking the outside stairs at the northeast corner of Meany Hall to the sunken courtyard. The Jones Playhouse is accessible via ramps and elevator from the main entrance at 4045 University Way NE. Disability access Meany Theater is accessible via ramps and elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage (NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE). For Meany Studio Theater, park on level C1 of the garage and use the ramp to that theater’s lobby.

The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, and the Jones Playhouse. Notecards for the 201718 season are $90 ($75 for UW community members). A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis.** Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so arrive early for the best choice of seats. Notecards are not transferable, refundable, or replaceable. PARKING Parking for performances in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, the Walker-Ames Room, and Jones Playhouse Underground parking

The entrance to the UW Central Plaza Parking Garage is at NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE, on the west side of campus. A $10 non-refundable flat rate is charged for evening events (4 pm or after).

Above-ground parking

Enter the UW campus at NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE, near the Burke Museum. Stop at the gatehouse to pay (the evening rate is $5) and to obtain directions and a parking permit.

Parking for events in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium

Enter the north end of campus (NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE), near the Burke Museum north entrance or via the east side of campus (Pend Oreille Road, off 25th Avenue NE) near University Village Shopping Center. Stop at the gatehouse to pay (the evening rate is $5); tell the parking specialist that you’re going to a School of Music event. You’ll receive directions to the nearest lot and a parking permit.
