SEASON
WELCOME
A new season of music-making is upon us at the University of Washington, and our 2019-20 concert season presents music from across the centuries and up to the present moment in a panoply of styles, approaches, and techniques. This year we are thrilled to welcome concert violinist Rachel Lee Priday to the School of Music faculty. Newly appointed as an assistant professor in the strings program, Rachel brings astonishing talent and wide-ranging interests to our already-stellar strings faculty. Hear her perform several times this season, with recitals on Oct. 24 and May 19. She also joins with faculty colleagues Craig Sheppard, piano, and Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, cello, to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven piano trios over two concerts at Meany’s Gerlich Theater (Dec. 9, Feb. 29) in honor of the composer’s 250th birthday. Thorsteinsdóttir, meanwhile, presents three Meany recitals in 2019-20, starting with a duo concert with pianist Julio Elizalde (March 9). She returns to Meany Hall in May to perform the six Cello Suites of J. S. Bach over two consecutive evenings (May 21, 22).
All three of the above faculty performers also appear prominently with the UW Symphony Orchestra (David Alexander Rahbee, director) in 2019-20, with Thorsteinsdóttir and Priday joining colleagues Mary Lynch, oboe, and Seth Krimsky, bassoon, in a Dec. 6 performance of Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante, Op. 84, and Sheppard appearing on May 1 to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C Major with the orchestra. Other performances by the UW Symphony Orchestra include a Nov. 1 program featuring faculty pianist Cristina Valdés performing Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The orchestra’s annual performance with the Combined UW Choirs (March 13), includes music by Schubert, Dallapiccola, Schumann, and Ravel, conducted by David Alexander Rahbee.

Other season highlights include guest artist concerts by Ensemble Dal Niente (May 15), performing the music of UW faculty composers; a national tour stop by the President’s Own Marine Band (Oct. 2); a special concert of concertos performed by the Philharmonia Northwest with UW piano students (May 31); a faculty recital by piano professor Robin McCabe shared with students from her UW studio (April 24); and a New Music Festival (April 10, 14, 17, 21), featuring concerts by visiting artists and ensembles, as well as our own talented students and faculty. Each year, concerts and recitals from the UW performance studios form the backbone of our concert season. This year, we introduce a new series, Strings Attached, in recognition of the many concerts from our instrumental and voice studios presented each year in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium. These performances have been presented for the past several years with free admission, thanks to a gift from the estate of Mina Brechemin Person, continuing the Brechemin family's long history of providing important support for UW music students. This year, we present concerts by two Ethnomusicology Visiting Artists, continuing a tradition of a half-century-plus at the School of Music. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Paco Díez and students perform music of northern Spain (Nov. 26), and dancer/instrumentalist Kedmon Mapana and students perform music and dance of the Wagogo people of Tanzania (June 2). The above-mentioned events only skim the surface of all that is ahead in our 2019-20 concert season. We invite you to join us for one or all of these upcoming performances. Thank you! MEET THE ARTIST: PACO DÍEZ
Born into a family of farm workers in the heart of Castille, singer and multi-instrumentalist Paco Díez was raised to feel and to think in the manner of the rural world in which he lived, at a time when folk traditions were beginning to disappear. He is celebrated today as one of the major exponents of both the Spanish Romancero and Sephardic music, as well as the traditional music of Castilla y León. Recognized in 2007 by Autoridad Nacional del Ladino for his work in performing and diffusing Sephardic music, he is the recipient of numerous awards in Spain and France, including the Medaille d’Argent et Palme, awarded in Paris in 2017. This is his second residency with the University of Washington as an Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist.
MEET THE ARTIST: KEDMON MAPANA
Multi-instrumentalist, dancer, scholar, and cultural preservationist Kedmon Mapana makes a return visit to the School of Music in spring 2019 to work with students and faculty interested in the Wagogo music and dance of Tanzania. Head of the Department of Creative Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam, Mapana first came to the University of Washington in 2011 to teach a performance-based course in Wagogo song, instrumental music, and dance at the School of Music, a residency culminating in the first onstage performance of Wagogo music in North America. Since then he has participated in several exchanges with UW students and faculty in Seattle and in Dar es Salaam, where he is a respected leader in preserving and promoting local culture in Chamwino, Tanzania through the festival he founded, the Chamwino Music Festival, now in its twelfth year. At the culmination of his UW residency, he presents a concert with his UW students and special guests. 1

MEET THE ARTIST: RACHEL LEE PRIDAY
A rising star in the classical music world joins the School of Music faculty in fall 2019 when violinist Rachel Lee Priday begins a new appointment as assistant professor in the University of Washington Strings program. Priday has earned critics’ praise for her "rich, mellifluous sound," "dazzling, forceful technique," and "silvery fluidity." Since making her orchestral debut at the Aspen Music Festival in 1997, she has performed in the world's most distinguished concert venues, appearing as soloist with major international orchestras, including the Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Seattle, and National Symphony Orchestras, the Boston Pops, and the Berlin Staatskapelle. Priday holds a B.A. in English from Harvard University and an M.M. from the New England Conservatory. A native of Chicago, she studied with the late pedagogue Dorothy DeLay and Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School. Combining a fierce intelligence with an imaginative curiosity, Rachel Lee Priday’s wide-ranging repertoire and eclectic programming reflect a deep fascination with literary and cultural narratives and mark her as an artist who seeks contemporary resonances with the masterworks of the past. 5

There is a $3 processing fee per ticket for mail, fax, phone, and online orders. No processing fee is charged for tickets purchased at the ArtsUW Ticket Office window. At the performance: The box offices open one hour prior to performance for ticket sales and will-call tickets. Exchanges Exchanges are valid (for an alternate performance of the same event) with a handling fee of $3 per ticket. Exchanges must be completed at least 24 hours in advance of the date on the ticket. We regret that we cannot give refunds for unused tickets. Location Meany Theater** and Meany Studio Theater are in Meany Hall, on the southwest corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”). Meany Hall’s main entrance leads directly into Meany Theater. Enter Meany Studio Theater by taking the outside stairs at the northeast corner of Meany Hall to the sunken courtyard. Assistive Listening Devices Assistive listening devices (ALDs) are available for Meany Hall performances for patrons who use hearing aids and cochlear implants with a “T” switch. Headsets may be obtained from an Audiences Services staff member. Photo ID deposit is required.
For Meany Studio Theater, park on level C1 of the garage and use the ramp to that theater’s lobby.
