HISTORY The lands that today comprise Croatia were a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. In April 2009, Croatia joined NATO; it is a candidate for eventual EU accession.

Zagreb GET ARROUND Zagreb has a well-developed and efficient public transport system that consists of trams, buses and trains. The tram network operates 24 hours a day - from 4AM to 12AM there are 15 “day-time lines” (tram lines 1-9, 11-15 and 17), and from 12AM to 4AM there are 4 “night” lines (tram lines 31-34) which cover most of the day-time lines on a reduced (around 30-40 minute) frequency. Occasionally, buses replace trams on night lines. Tram line 3 does not operate Saturdays, Sundays and on public holidays. There are maps of the tram lines on almost every stop, so if you know the nearest stop to your destination you can simply figure out the shortest trip while you’re at the stop. As for the buses, there are 113 day-time and 4 night lines. ZET buses cover the area outside the city center, as well as some neighboring towns that administratively belong to Zagreb county. The buses use the same ticketing system as the trams and cost 12kn.

Pula MUST SEE The Arena It is the 6th largest surviving Roman amphitheatre. Towering over the nearby buildings this huge structure was barely saved from destruction several times during its life, mostly by various Venetians with plans to take it to Venice stone by stone as demonstration of the might of the Venetian empire. Many stones were taken to build houses and other structures around Pula, but fortunately this practice was stopped before the whole structure was destroyed. Entry (20 kn) gives you access to wander the inside of the Colosseum and visit the caverns beneath. The audio tour is very worthwhile. The Forum It is is the main square in the center of the city. The square is built on the place of the ancient Roman forum. On the square there is city hall that was built in 10th century (parts of an old temple were used for the building as it can be seen on the rear side of the hall) and the Temple of August, from the first century.

Pula EAT OUT The dining scene is highly developed in and around Pula and provides excellent value for money. Yes, you can eat meat but you’ll miss out on some world-class seafood. Istria’s eventful past has left a significant trace on its cuisine - the influence of Italian, Central European, especially Austrian and Hungarian, as well as Slav cuisine can also be felt in Pula’s restaurants that offer a great variety of dishes where you can taste both seafood dishes and also those from the interior of Istria. So-called fritaja or scrambled eggs are traditional dishes prepared in many ways, surely one of the most popular is fritaja with wild asparagus, wild growing plant rich in potassium, vitamin C, A and B. Fritaja is also prepared with dried sausages, young onions, truffles.... And each one is special in its own way. In Pula you should also try maneštra, traditional thick soup, the main ingredients of which are potatoes and beans with pešt (bacon and garlic roux). This delicacy

Hot destinations is even tastier when bobici (young corn) or crumbled corn is added, and just as delicious with chickpeas and barley. When cooking maneštra very often the bone of Istrian prosciutto is put inside. Another specific taste is achieved if it is prepared with young fennel. Jota is a variety of maneštra in which, apart from the basic ingredients of potatoes and beans, sauerkraut is added. The influence of Italian cuisine in Istria is best felt in different types of tasty pasta offered in Pula. The most popular are fuži and gnocchi. Fuži are made with eggs, flour and water. The mixture is then kneaded into smooth dough, which is rolled out and cut into rectangular shapes and then folded over. Over the last few years Istria has become the leading Croatian region in the production of top quality wines. Wine was once simply divided into red and white wine, but today in Pula’s wine shops you can also taste Borgonja, Hrvatica, and other fine varieties known all over the world like Chardonnay, Grey and White Pinot, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the most famous Istrian wines are Malvasia and Teran.

Buses #2 and #8, to Trsat, are probably the most useful for tourists, and a good alternative to the 538 stair climb to the top of the hill. Rijeka has a cheap and well organized Taxi service, they will get you anywhere in the city for approximately €10 or less. Taxi Cammeo will get you to Opatija for arround €10, or to Lovran for as low as €13.

Zadar GET ARROUND The centre is easy enough to get around on foot. Buses in Zadar are relatively new and well maintained, and you will be able to catch a bus to any part of the city from the main hub in the city called Mala Pošta (Little Post Office); ask any local where this is and they can direct you to it. A bus ticket in one direction costs 8 kuna (cca. US$1.60) while a two way ticket costs 13 kuna (cca. US$2.50). However, 2 way tickets are only available for purchase at newspaper stands, although they are easy to find. One way tickets are available for purchase upon entering any bus. Do not attempt to board a bus without a ticket, without purchasing a ticket or avoiding stamping a bus ticket. Why Šibenik? Šibenik located alongside the flooded mouth of the Krka River, is the most picturesque city on the eastern Adriatic coast. It was first mentioned in 1066., during the reign of Croatian King Krešimir IV, when the city began to spread like an amphitheater below the cliff dominated by the fortress of St. Michael. The complex of steep streets and arched passages leading toward the harbor evolved from this, enclosing the nucleus of the city with the town hall, the princely palace and the famous Cathedral of St. James. In addition of St. Michael another two nearby fortresses bear witness to the turbulent past of the town. The cathedral of St. James is main destination for culturally oriented tourism in the city of Šibenik. Built in a a Gothic-Renaissance style under the direction of the famous architects Juraj Dalmatinac and Nikola Firentinac it is exceptional in that it was buli exclusively of stone. Šibenik MUST SEE St James’ cathedral It is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its building had started in 1431, and it was finished in 1536 due to Turkish wars. Several successive architects built it completely in stone in the 15th and 16th centuries, both in Gothic and in Renaissance style. The interlocking stone slabs of the Cathedral’s roof were damaged when the city was shelled by Serbian forces in 1991. The damage has since been repaired. It has a beautiful baptistery worth seeing it, and the curiosity is it has been built with stone only, without any kind of binder. Another one is 72 human heads carved in stone on the external part which belong to unknown individuals, passers-by, sailors, merchants and peasants who posed as the cathedral was being built. Statues of Adam and Eve are also curious; Adam is covering his breasts, and Eve is covering not her breasts, but her stomach.

Dubrovnik GET ARROUND The Old Town can be comparatively difficult to navigate on first appearances, as it really is a warren of little streets. That being said, some of these signs appear to be either intentionally misleading or woefully out of date. For example, there is no office of any bus company within the Old Town, despite what the signs may say. The city is completely pedestrianised and easily small enough to get around on foot, some of the streets are a little steep though. If you are not staying in the Old Town, it’s relatively simple get there by bus, as just about every one leads to the Old Town. However, it might be advisable to get a timetable just in case. It costs 12 kn (just over ₏1) for tickets bought at any kiosk,or 15 kn bought on the bus; ticket valid for 1 hr. Dubrovnik EAT OUT There is a wide range of restaurants in the Old Town, mostly offering a very similar menu of local seafood and some meat dishes. The cuisine may not be very imaginative, but it is usually of good quality and very fresh. Restaurants can be crudely separated into (slightly) cheaper tourist-trap places, and more expensive but first class gastronomic restaurants. There are a few pizzerias, mostly wood-fired and quite acceptable. The Kraš chocolate sold at stores is delicious. Remember that Dubrovnik, more so than the rest of Croatia, is well aware of its status as a tourist hotspot. Rents for restaurant premises are high and consequently the prices on the menus reflect this. Note that in the off peak season of November-March nearly all the top-end restaurants close, leaving only a handful of desperate tourist trap enterprises operating and still charging high prices. You can however still eat well and discounts can be negotiated.

Hot destinations Dubrovnik cuisine is characteristically not very spicy and is famous for traditionalism. Many popular meals are characteristic of Dubrovnik such as zelena menestra (it is the name for many sorts of cabbages and other vegetables with meat), pasticada and the famous delicacy dubrovacka rozata. Dubrovnik fish restaurants are popular.

Trakoscan Castle Trakošćan is a cultural heritage, protected historical complex that consists of the castle, households, park and forest park with a lake. The castle is one of the few surviving buildings with their own material, historically closely linked to the architectural framework and a life of its owners, the Drašković family. The oldest layer of the castle dates back to the 13th century when it was a medieval fortress. Its present appearance dates from the 19th century, when the owners restored it in the spirit of historicism. After the Second World War it was turned into a museum containing a valuable collections of paintings, furniture, weapons and other items that are constantly exposed in original space units.

Varaždin EAT OUT Varaždin County area has a rich gastronomic heritage and tradition, which represent the identity of this region. Autochthonous and traditional dishes are part of tourist offer. Throughout history, this part of Croatia was under great influence of Austria, Hungary and Turkey. The influence has left marks in political and social life, including cuisine. Mainland cuisine is therefore today very diverse and heterogonous. Make sure you try Medimurska gibanica - as the best cake of north Croatia. Here people eat a lot and they eat well. Traditional gastronomy is characterized by simplicity of preparation but luxury in taste. Some typical cold hors-d’oeuvres include meat from tiblica (smoked pork prepared in fat), finely cut cooked bacon, turoš cheese (a cone-shaped cheese made from cow’s milk), cottage cheese with sour cream.

Mala Hiža RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION Restaurant Mala Hiža is situated in Mackovec, 4 km north of Čakovec, on the road leading to spa Sveti Martin and border crossing Mursko Središce – Lendava. The restaurant is placed in an old oak house from 1887, which the owner and his family moved from Otok Svibovski near Ivanja Reka and restored to its original beauty. The traditional gastronomy of Medimurje with the richness of dishes and tastes is the focal point of creating everyday offer, but Mr Tomasic didn`t want to stay inside the strict limits of tradition, but has an ear for modern trends and with pleasure investigates the new borders and possibilities of Meidmurje gastronomy, as well as some other region`s gastronomical choices. Altough many say it is expencive, we have to disagree by adding that you can have a real gastronomic experience from 13 euros. Food is alčways fresh, staff is friendly, and atmosphere is the best. Backpacker or high class traveller, this is a place you must visit.
