Prologue The students of Primary Public School Of Potamia welcome you on their journey to the fascinating world of children’s book! “Let’s Play Book” is an electronic annual issue that includes reading animations, as part of sociocultural animation and an abempt for the children to comprehend, interpret and widen their experiences through a book. The entire learning experience of students is based and focused on a picture book, different every time, derived from the real needs of the group whether they are learning, emotional or social.
The selection of books is done by Vicky Xanthopoulou, who is in charge of the action, with specific criteria that meet the needs of the group whether they are learning, either emotionally or socially. Students'ʹ learning experience is based on a book and beyond play and learning, children have the opportunity to interact with book creators, writers and illustrators. “Let’s Play Book” so far has won three distinctions at national level: 1. Gold Award in the "ʺInnovation in Teaching"ʺ category from the Education Business Awards 2017 2. Prize 2018 in a school form issue category from the Greek Department of IBBY
3. Silver Award in the "ʺBest Learning Experience” category from Education Leaders Awards 2018. Many thanks to Antonis and Myrto who made our first steps in kindergarten easier and helped us to understand that the best time is the one we all spend together, to Christina and Maria who gave us their own memories so that we can build and keep ours, to Fran\eska and Eliza that showed us how to dream with eyes wide open, to Katerina and Natalia, who taught us Plutonian and to look at each other in the eyes, to Foivos and Myrto who allowed us to enter into their world and somewhere the two worlds met.
Special thanks to the illustrator Lia Fotiadou, who generously gave us the picture of the cover of the fourth issue of the magazine! “Let’s Play Book”!!!
Tick Tock Clocks, it’s time for the lesson Antonis Papatheodoulou, Illustrator Myrto Delivoria Publ. Ikaros
The school year always starts with the kids’ adjusting to the new school environment, our going over their prior knowledge, establishing a certain schedule and an everyday routine and regulating the relationships developed among the students. With the kids, we worked on a project which lasted one month, stimulated by the book “Tick-Tock Clocks, it’s time for the lesson” by Antonis Papatheodoulou and Myrto Delivoria, to approach our initial aims and cover the children’s basic needs. An ideal way to start!!! We have established routine and desirable ways of behaving and resolving problems that have contributed to us positively throughout the school year.
We have transformed to clocks and created a student abendance template...
…we have established some rules in order to be able to coexist in our classroom in harmony, love and joy…
…we have created emotion cards to express our feelings…
‌special corner where we can all go every time we need to discuss our complaints with our friends and eventually become good friends again.
‌a Tick-Tock poem! By reading it every morning, we have initiated our every day with positivity!
Antonis and Myrto sent us a wonderful gift! Clock-bookmarks!!!
Please, draw a house for me Christina Fragkeskaki, illustrator Maria Bacha Publ. Kaleidoskopio
The house where we spent our childhood is our whole world. Our present, our future, the past that we recall to feel safe and secure. A toy, a dinner table, a tree in the yard, a tasty meal, scents, sounds and colors. Everything that we have loved we embrace, and make our way through life carrying it with us. We want to treasure one or more moments of our childhood to create a sweet memory. The powerful message that the story by Christina Fragkeskaki conveys, along with the amazing illustrations by Maria Bacha, stimulate our next project. Â
The writer willingly let us take her interview. We are deeply moved by her answers and the pictures of her cat, Ama.
We make our own photo albums with pictures of our houses, our favorite people and our favorite toys.
We “built” our own houses
We make a model of Christina’s house with her drawings as a gift to the wonderful journey she took us on!
I dream with my eyes open Fran\eska Alexopoulou Petraki, Illustrator Elisa Vavouri Publ. Papadopoulos
“I dream with my eyes open”, the book by Frantzeska Alexopoulou Petraki, illustrated by Eliza Vavouri provided the motive to sensitize children to vision problems. We read the book and in the end, the kids are extremely surprised to discover that the book heroine is blind! Many questions and remarks follow… Our questions about the heroes and the story are answered by the most suitable person, the writer, Frantzeska Alexopoulou Petraki herself, who also reveals many secrets about the book!!! We are very grateful!!!!
Interviewing FranVeska
Children recreate Iris’s bedroom
and they give her toys that make different sounds
Kids write a tale and a song using raised designs and symbols, so that the heroine can read them.
We organize activities about empathy
and we daydream with our eyes open!
Frantzeska gives us a very precious present, a draft of one of the book illustrations by Eliza Vavouri!
Do you speak plutonian? Author: Katerina Zontanou Illustarated by Natalia Kapatsoulia Publisher: Metaixmio
The needs and interests of our group are mostly the ones to determine what our next project will be about. Given the dissimilarity of the students regarding their first language, a project about language diversity is as likable as it is essential. For those of you who don’t know about Plutonian, it is the language spoken by aliens and, of course, only children can understand it. Namely, in order to communicate you have to look each other in the eye. We all love astronauts, planets, the space, and also Plutonian, that’s why the children had so many interesting ideas.
In order to communicate, they made their own Greek-Plutonian dictionary, for us grown-ups to understand Plutonian, too.
We become astronauts and we improve our plutonians
We write and illustrate a book on our own about Yan-Man the alien, our new friend and we were so lucky to have Natalia Kapatsoulia illustrate the cover for us!
Sometimes, we don’t need to travel in space to speak Plutonian. We only have to meet people from other countries, people speaking different languages, languages that seem like Plutonian to us. So we invited friends and family to our school to sing songs and read books in their own language. An unforgettable experience! We are thankful!!! A girl’s mom taught us a children’s song in czech.A boy’s mom sang the happy-birthday song in Albanian, his native language. Miss Emmy, Panayotis’ aunt, sang to us a song in Russian.
Even though we might not speak the same language, there’s always a way to communicate… Through a look…Through a smile…Through a hug!!!
Tell me your name
Author: Foivos Delivorias Illustrated by Myrto Delivoria Publisher: Mikri Arktos
Sibling relationship is sometimes complicated. During childhood it is tested by arguing, fighting, sudden emotional outbursts, getting jealous. But when kids come of age, a strong emotional bond is created and sealed, the bond fueled by sibling love. We had been in search of a book about sibling relationship that manages to point out all the beautiful things created by it. And nothing is more to the point than a book created by two siblings sharing all the above experiences. Α story with songs written by Foivos Delivorias and illustrations by Myrto Delivoria
The kids interview the author. He shares with us all the moments of his childhood and sibling relationship with his sister, Myrto.
...Foivos also writes a lible song dedicated to us!
The children and their siblings turned into small puppets to play with and they shared their moments with their brothers or sisters in the way children know the best ‌ by playing of course!
Siblings may argue, fight and pout, but that’s just what siblings do! They shared some amazing moments, too! Parents can write about these moments on the note keepers that kids made themselves, which have the kids’ photographs on them.
The children invite their brothers and sisters to our school and play their favorite games together. We had such an amazing time!!!
Me and my students made the world Myrto and Foivos share in this book, and we recreated their childhood memories and beloved heroes‌
We also made our hometown, the world where we and our siblings live in.
Myrto beautifully made the two worlds become one in her artwork!
All of the childrens’ thoughts and emotions about sibling relationship are expressed in the poem below: “We live in the same room and we have to stand each other! I kick you hard, and you punch me even harder! You pull my hair, I pull your ears and I get mad at you. But you also keep me company, and play with me all kinds of games. And even though you give me a hard time, you love me the most. Years will go by but we will be together, forever. We’re the same, but still, so different like lollipops and balloons!!!”

Epilogue One more adventurus trip playing book has just ended… I wish my students to keep enjoying reading books, playing with them, laughing, gebing touched by the stories and the pictures. Words can’t describe how thankful I am to my students, they are the best teacher for me! This volume, which stands as a feedback of our learning experiences of this school year, is dedicated to them with all my respect! Xanthopoulou Vicky Primary Teacher Sociocultural Animator
