WELCOME TO ZION

Welcome to Zion National Park! In 2013 Zion was selected as the location for our first half marathon. We did this for several reasons, one of which being that many of us grew up here. Zion is home. I can remember, as a child, escaping the blistering St George summers to Zion. Tubing down the river, hiking to Emerald Pools or just sitting on the grass in front of the Lodge; some of my happiest memories are here in the walls of these canyons.

Back in 2013, about 500 runners (including some of you) took a chance on a new race series. The weather was cold that year but the scenery was breathtaking. Since then the race has grown to nearly 2500 participants, and the series has grown to include 8 races in 2015. We are forever grateful for all of you who have helped us start this race series. Thank you. Zion is a unique park. It’s smaller than most of the busier National Parks and the red cliffs of Zion are only found in the Colorado Plateau. The geology of the Zion and Kolob canyons area includes 9 formations that together represent 150 million years of mostly Mesozoic-aged sedimentation. It’s basically an old sand dune, solidified and carved by the Virgin River. In addition to all the natural beauty, the park also includes one of the most amazing engineering feats, The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. This tunnel goes through the wall of the East Canyon and the views from the windows are incredible. Even more incredible is learning that the construction of the 1.1 mile Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel began in the late 1920’s and was completed in 1930. At the time that the tunnel was dedicated, on July 4, 1930, it was the longest tunnel of its type in the United States. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches which all tell millions of stories. Stories of water and wind, stories of an ancient native people, stories of young explorers, stories of families, and now... stories of runners. In addition to what we expect to be a great race, we hope you spend some time enjoying the park. Whether you hike, bike, tube, drive, climb or rappel we hope you appreciate how beautiful the park is. Thank you again for choosing to run the Zion Half Marathon this year. We hope you enjoy yourself this year, and consider coming back to Zion or choosing to run any of our other races next year as we celebrate the National Park Service Centennial. Happy Exploring.

THE COURSE

AID STATIONS - We will have aid stations near mile 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12. All aid stations will have bathrooms, water + Nuun, honey stinger energy gels. Mile 7 and 11 will also have oranges and bananas, OPEN COURSE - This race is an open course. There will be cars on the road as well as runners. DO NOT step off the course into traffic, you will be disqualified. We want you to stay safe. The course will be well marked. Please stay in course boundaries - do not run on the sidewalk in the city of Rockville. CHOKE START - The start will be severely “choked”. If you are standing towards the back, after the gun goes off you may be standing for a few moments before there is any movement. This is to space everyone out and to avoid bottlenecks on the course. Your time does not officially start until you cross the starting line (this is a chip timed race), so please be courteous to others as we start the race. ELEVATION (ft) - You can see the elevation map below. It looks a little scary, but pay attention to the real elevation gain. It’s very gradual (about a 2 feet gain for every 100 yards). Besides, downhill courses are for wimps. It’ll all be worth it to see the view at the finish line.

8

PACERS - Pacers will line up at the start line around 7:15 am. There will be a pacer pacing the race in 10 minute intervals starting at a 1h40m pace up to 2h30m. We will also have a 2h45m, 3h, and 3h30m pacer. Please seat yourself near the time you expect to finish. GEAR CHECK - You will be given a Gear Check bag at the starting line if you wish. It will be a white garbage bag that you can fill with anything you want transported to the finish line. There will be permanent markers you can use to write your name and bib number. Avoid putting valuables in your bag. *gear check bags will be available at the finish line as soon as the first person finishes.

Recovery Box - At the finish line we will have a Recovery Box (full of recovery snacks), bananas, and chocolate milk (as well as water and Nuun hydration). Please help yourself to one box, chocolate milk, and banana per runner.

CLOTHING ON COURSE - We will have a clothing bin to dump items in at mile 3. Anything else found along the course will be treated as trash. *clothing dropped off at mile 3 won’t be picked up until the last runner has passed mile 3 - so you may have to wait for your clothing.

In an attempt to reduce waste, we will provide a place to trade/leave any unwanted snack items.

OTHER COURSE INFO - Please do not litter on our course! Any kind of road markings with paint or even chalk will not be allowed. Please help us keep the area pristine for those who come after us.

START LINE PARKING

If you are just dropping off a runner and do not plan to park, you will be directed to the left after entering the parking area. If you intend to park and watch your runner start the race you should not use the drop-off area but should instead park in the parking area. You will have to wait until after the race starts to leave. The parking area and start line are on Camino Del Rio off of Highway 9. If you are coming from Springdale you will turn left off of the Highway. If you are coming from St. George you will turn right. The parking lot will close at 7:00 AM sharp. If you intend to sleep in your car (which we neither encourage nor discourage), be sure to park in the back of the lot. You may be woken up and asked to move in the morning when race crew arrive.

10

FINISH LINE PARKING

Free parking is available along the West side of the highway and on Lion Blvd. in Springdale (outlined in blue). There is also limited parking along Highway 9. There is a large parking lot near the Zion Canyon Visitors Center inside park boundaries. You can park here and walk to the finish line and shuttle pick up via the Pa’rus trail. If you park inside park boundaries and exit the park, you will need your pass to re-enter and retrieve your car. National Park fees apply. There is a paid parking lot (outlined in green) off of Lion Blvd next to the Zion Adventure Company building. The owner of the parking lot IS offering a discount on parking fees to event participants. When you enter the parking lot there will be a pay box. If you choose to park here you will need to put $5 into and envelope with “Zion Half Marathon” written on it and place it into the pay box.

Though we won’t stop anyone from sleeping in their car at the start, we would recommend (and would rather) you find some of the plentiful *free* dispersed camping spots in the area. On our travel page on our website we have a link to several maps that show different camping spots on BLM land, etc.

11

FINISH LINE STAGING & SHUTTLES

Spectators and runners are welcome around the finish line to cheer on runners.

If you signed up for the pre-race shuttle you will get a wristband at the expo when you get your race packet. Please wear your wristband when boarding the shuttle in the morning. *If you won’t be picking up your bib until race morning someone will be at the shuttle to check you in to verify you signed up for the shuttle.

The awards ceremony will take place at the stage just north of the finish line and will begin at 10:15 AM. If you checked gear at the start of the race, you will be able to pick it up just north of the finish line. Lucid Images (our event photographers) will have a designated spot at the finish line to take photos of runners with the stunning backdrop of Zion Canyon. These photos will be made available FOR FREE!

Shuttle pick up for both before and after the race will be just north of the finish line in the Zion Outfitter parking lot.

The finish line will have restrooms and water as well as a recovery food box, chocolate milk, and bananas for runners.

Post-race shuttle will be available to take runners back to the start line after the race. The first will leave at 10:15 AM. The last shuttle will leave at 11:45 AM. No reservation is required for the post-race shuttles. These will be available and free for everyone.

All pre-race shuttles will be leaving at 5:30 AM.

12

SPECTATOR INFORMATION

EXPO INFORMATION The expo will be held at the Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theater (145 Zion Park Blvd. Springdale, UT 84767). You can pick up your bib and gear, but plan to stay and check out our awesome vendors!

Because of the significant amount of road control, spectators are not allowed to stop along the highway at any point along the race. Spectators are welcome at the starting line, but the starting line will be closed to vehicles from 7:10 AM to approximately 7:45 AM. Expect race related delays along highway 9 towards Springdale.

The expo will be from 10:00 AM - 6:00PM (you can pick up your bib until 7:00 PM). We will have some great vendors and race merchandise!

The best place to watch in Springdale would be to park at the LDS church approximately 2 miles from the finish line.

When you pick up your packet at the expo this year, we’re encouraging you to Bring Your Own Bag! To keep in line with our tradition of waste elimination and conservation of the land, we’re going completely bag-less at the expo this year! If you would like to purchase a reusable, foldable bag, we’ll have them available at our merch store.

Spectators are encouraged to be at the finish line to cheer on all our runners. Limited parking will be available in Springdale along Lion Blvd. If you can walk from your hotel to the finish line, please do so. There will be limited parking near the finish line. See page 11 for a map of parking at the finish line. Got time to kill? If you find yourself with spare time while waiting for your runner to finish, grab breakfast or coffee at Soleil Cafe or the Zion Market (both open at 7:00 am)!

ANGELS CLUB The Angels Club is a salute the hardcore among us. We want to reward anyone who hikes Angels Landing after the race. To join the Angels Club, submit a picture of yourself at the top of Angels Landing within 72 hours of the end of the race which includes: 1) A clear view of your face 2) Your bib with bib numbers clearly visible 3) Your finisher medal in plain view Angels Landing - The trail to Angels Landing is 2.7 miles long (5.4 round trip). Since shuttles will not be running until Sunday, if you go on Saturday we recommend parking at the Zion Lodge and take the short walk (less than a half mile) to The Grotto where the trailhead is. The first 2-miles are paved and well-maintained. Most of the path is sunny, but Refrigerator Canyon offers shade and often a cool breeze. This is a good early morning hike. Make sure to allow time to be off the trail by dark if starting late in the day. The last half-mile is across a narrow sandstone ridge. Anchored support chains are attached along some

sections of the sheer fin. Sheer cliffs at high elevations while hiking on a narrow fin. Not suggested for

children or those with a fear of heights. Avoid standing near the edge at all times! Do not hike the trail when it is wet, storming, or when high winds are present.

*Every year, several people die hiking Angel’s Landing, largely due to not fully appreciating its dangers. Please take the hike seriously, and do not act irresponsibly if you decide to attempt the hike. It is not intended to be accessible to everyone.

All runners the join the Angels Club will not only be immortalized on our website, but will also receive 50% OFF next year’s race entry! Last year we had 267 people take the challenge! After the race there will be a submission form online where you can upload your photo(s) and send them to us. We have a hard cutoff of 72 hours! If you don’t get it to us before Tuesday at 11 AM (MST) then we will only give you a virtual hi-five. Introducing

OBSERVATION CLUB

We are excited to announce a second club hike this year! Introducing: Observation Point. A second hike is meant to be an alternative to Angels Landing. The same rules apply: you must complete the hike within 72 hours of finishing the race. Submit a photo of yourself at the summit which clearly shows your medal and your bib. If you’re going to be in Zion for a while and would like to do both hikes, by all means feel free to do so. However, you will only receive 50% off next year’s race (club discounts cannot be combined). Observation Point is a beautiful alternative to Angels Landing. It is the highest point in the park. Although it doesn’t have the narrow passes with sheer drop-offs and chains, it is a very strenuous hike that does have long drop-offs. Still a very tough hike, it may be better for those who feel uncomfortable with heights. Observation Point - The hike to Observation Point via East Rim Trail is 4 miles long (8 miles round trip). The trailhead is at Weeping Rock (which makes a great side trip on your way back down). The trail was recently renovated by Park Services. You climb about 2,000 ft elevation to the summit which is 6,521 ft. You see that rock formation that looks like a ski slope? Yeah, that’s Angels Landing. The hike will take you through Echo Canyon and up to the top of Mount Baldy. This is a good early morning hike. Make sure to allow time to be off the trail by dark if starting late in the day. Though it doesn’t have the

chains and sheer drop-offs like Angels Landing, there are still long drop-offs and caution should be taken, Avoid steep edges at all times! Bring lots of water and snacks. Since this is a bit longer of a hike than Angels Landing, plan to be out there for most of the day.

ZION TRIFECTA The Zion Trifecta is comprised of 3 different activities. You must complete all 3 in order to complete the Trifecta. Same rules as the Angels Club apply: take your picture at each of the 3 with your bib and finisher medal and send them to us 72 hours after finishing the race. The Trifecta is meant to be challenging, but less strenuous. These are iconic activities inside the park that should be experienced, but are doable with children. The 3 activities that makeup the Trifecta are:

1 Riverside Walk (The Narrows) - The trail was historically called “Gateway to the Narrows” but is now commonly referred to as Riverside Walk. A nice, paved, 3 mile round trip hike. Extra hi-fives for anyone that actually wades in the water! (NOTE: we don’t recommend it. At this time of year the water is still frigid!! But if you’re feeling reckless and want extra kudos for your picture, we won’t be there to stop you).

2 Canyon Overlook - Canyon Overlook is only a mile round trip hike! This is perfect for families and offers a wonderful view of the Zion canyon with a look at the famous peaks like Bridge Mountain, West Temple, and The Sentinel. As an added bonus, when you drive up to the parking lot to make the short hike to the lookout, you get to pass through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel!

3 Kolob Canyon (Timbercreek Overlook) - Kolob Canyon is Zion’s best kept secret. About an hour north on I-15 from the main park entrance, this part of the park is less often visited by travelers, but it’s amazingly beautiful. The Timber Creek Trail is another short hike (1.2 miles round trip) that offers amazing views of Kolob Canyon. After about a 5 mile drive up the canyon you can park in a parking lot at the trail head.

The survey provides us with information that allows us to better work with the local community and gain more support for future races, but more importantly it provides us with valuable insight into what we are doing well and what we need to improve. We love our runners and couldn’t improve our race series without your feedback. Please watch for the email.

MEDICAL TENT

• The medical tent at the finish line is for athletes only; family members are not allowed. Overcrowding in the medical tent prevents medical staff from doing their job. For information on an athlete receiving medical attention please wait outside the tent for updates.

CUP-FREE RACING

Having our races so close to the national parks, unnecessary waste and trash is something we are strongly against. We are dedicated to maintaining a clean race and preserving the beauty of the area we run in. There is nothing that will ruin a view more than seeing a piece a trash in plain view from a breathtaking landscape. That being said, one of the most important things in a half marathon is ensuring that aid stations are plentiful and efficient. Hydration will make or break a race. What we do is offer a Hydrapouch for every runner that indicated they wanted one as part of their registration. Other options include running with a water bottle, fuel belt, camelbak or other hydration backpack, etc. Every runner prefers something different. Just make sure you have some way to stay hydrated! Although we don’t have cups on the course, we have plenty of aid stations with water and Nuun! At all aid stations we will have blue coolers with water and red coolers with Nuun (electrolyte drink). Both will have the same speed valves attached. So at each aid station you will have your choice of water or Nuun. At some places, the water will be hooked up to a system like the one pictured on the left. Each of these pipes will provide water from the several speed valves we have attached. Feel free to practice at the expo! The aid station will have a few cups in case of an emergency, do not plan on using them. Also, under no circumstances should you put your head under the valve to get a drink. Not only does this waste water, it is pretty inconsiderate of other runners. There will be water at the finish line but no cups!

RACE PHOTOGRAPHY from Lucid Images • Lucid Images will be taking photos at the start line, on the course, and at the finish line. They will be at the expo so be sure to stop by and say hello! • To be sure you can find your picture later, wear your bib with the numbers clearly visible at all times. If the photographers cannot identify you by your bib then your photo will end up in an “unidentified runner” folder on their website. • Photos are usually available on Lucid Images website the Wednesday or Thursday following the race. We will send out an email to notify all runners and post it on Facebook • Smile!

PHOTOS ON COURSE

• As a heads up to runners, there will be signs on the course to let runners know they are coming up on photographers. Ya know, just in case you wanted to freshen up your makeup or pick up the pace or otherwise pose for the photo :)

FREE PHOTO

• In addition to photos of runners on the course and crossing the finish line, Lucid Images will have a designated area near the awards ceremony stage where runners can pose for a photo with the beautiful back drop of Zion Canyon. This photo will be made available FOR FREE to runners!
