DEAR JAZZ FRIENDS, Turning 18 is a coming of age, not only for a young man or woman, but also for the Vail Jazz Festival. The Festival’s 18th season has brought us opportunities we could only have imagined a year ago, which have translated into exciting, new programs for all to enjoy. While 2012’s lineup represents many new events, we are committed to staying focused on our mission: to perpetuate jazz through live performances that showcase the artistry and talent of the musicians and through educational programs, with an emphasis on young audiences and young musicians. I hope you will join us! This program highlights all of our new initiatives, including two collaborations with Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. The first takes place on July 2, when Vail favorite Curtis Stigers will be the featured vocalist performing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. We will also join with Bravo! to present three Orchestra Jazz Jams with members from each of the resident orchestras, DSO, Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. The free performances, titled “Jazz After,” will be a great way for these artists to demonstrate their jazz “chops.” The free Jazz @ The Market series returns to its popular tented location at Solaris with exciting artists performing Sunday afternoons at the Vail Farmers’ Market. Also on Sundays, join us at Restaurant Kelly Liken for her ever-popular Harvest Menu, along with local jazz legend Tony Gulizia and a different guest

artist each week. Jazz @ Vail Square returns on Thursday nights, offering new preferred seating options, available for purchase for the season or for individual shows - both options give you a seat at the front of the tent. The remaining seating will be free and the stellar lineup of musicians offers a wide range of genres featuring today’s most sought-after jazz artists. Don’t miss our two receptions following the performances of Cuban sensation Wil Campa on July 12th and Tommy Igoe on August 9th, at which you’ll be able to interact with the musicians in an intimate environment Over the extended Labor Day Weekend beginning on Thursday, we will present 35 hours of jazz – with the top names in jazz performing in multiple combinations throughout the Weekend, and featuring Multi-Media Tributes to jazz giants, our new Jazz in Depth shows, and of course our popular jam sessions. Lastly, we are honored to partner with the Town of Vail to present an exhibit on the Times of Dave Brubeck at the Vail Visitor Center exhibit space all summer. As we continue to experience growth in our Festival, we have you to thank each and every one who supports our work. With our focus on presenting high caliber performances and educational programs, we can’t wait for this summer and hope to see you there. Tony Gulizia Trio Vail’s “Jazz Ambassador,” Tony Gulizia, keyboard, will be joined by Allan Finney, drums, and Walter Scott on trumpet to open the season at the Jazz Tent at Solaris. The trio will perform tunes from the American songbook, blues, Latin Jazz and straight ahead jazz. You can be sure that whatever the style of jazz the band is performing it will swing, whether an instrumental or a vocal rendition of one of the classic standards that we all know and love.

Hot Club of Detroit traces its musical DNA to Quintette du Hot Club de France, a legendary jazz group founded in France in 1934 by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappeli, and active in one form or another 16 | V A I L

Kathy Morrow Trio

Kathy Morrow has been singing and playing the piano in the Vail Valley for the last 18 years, after traveling and performing in Europe, Asia and parts of the Middle East. Her unique energy, vocal range and musical sense are appreciated by all those who experience her performances. With Morrow on piano and vocals, the trio is completed by Tom Paxton on bass and Allan Finney on drums. Morrow also performs locally as part of the vocal trio The Fabulous Femmes.

July 15 Cohencided with Chuck Lamb Co-led by keyboardist Chuck Lamb (a former Vail Valley resident and now member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet) and drummer Bob Cohen (a long time Vail Valley resident), this ensemble will play straight ahead jazz with a contemporary twist that is guaranteed to excite. Eric Thorin will join Chuck and Bob on bass. By combining Chuck’s virtuosic command of the keyboard with strong rhythmic support by Bob, the band will present not only “burners,” but ballads, blues and some surprises. The ambitious musical journey the band will take you on will make this a one-of-a-kind musical experience.

July 22 Ginga Band Ginga, a Brazilian-Venezuelan ensemble, brings a vibrant new energy to the Colorado music scene. Their music resonates with the lively sounds of Latin percussion fused with flute, guitar, bass and sax. The sextet features Bill Kopper (vocals, guitar, percussion), Greg LaLiberte (vocals, flute, saxophone, percussion), Francisco Marques (vocals, bass, cavaquinho,

percussion), Raoul Rossiter (vocals , drums, percussion), Gui Carmago (vocals), and Victor Mestas (keyboard).

Lionel Young Band With a love for the blues and boogie woogie, classically trained Lionel Young is a high-energy electric violinist who combines original material with interpretations of blues classics by Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Young has performed with Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronstadt, Woody Herman, Stanley Turrentine and many others. Young is featured on violin, guitar and vocals, and his band features Dexter Payne on sax, Kim Stone on bass, Jay Forrest on drums, and Andre Mali on trumpet. Their most recent release is On Our Way to Memphis.

Justin Allison Trio Justin Allison’s vocal and guitar styling appeals to the most passionate jazz fan and to the casual listener. His repertoire is drawn from the great American songbook including Cole Porter, Ira and George Gershwin, and Rogers and Hart. Expect tunes from Duke Ellington, TheloniousMonk, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, and Dave Brubeck. Brazilian bossa nova and sambas of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dori Caymmi, Joao Bosco, and Ivan Lins complete the band’s playlist. Justin Allison leads the trio, which also includes drummer Allan Finney and guitarist Bill Kopper.

Salsa Con Jazz

Salsa Con Jazz is a 10-piece band lead by veteran jazz musician Jimmy Trujillo, who hosts the popular KVJZ radio show after which the band is named. Jimmy, bass, is joined by Justin Adams (keyboard), Gary Sosias (timbales and vocals), José Espino (bongos, bata and percussion), Mark Márquez (congas), Walter Barr (trumpet), Wade Sander (trombone), Jeremy Wendelin (saxes and flute), Bernard Alvarado (lead vocals), and Tomás Ornelas

(vocals). Playing Salsa and Latin Jazz while combining the improvisation of jazz with the incredible groove of the Mambo, Cha Cha, and much more, this band will move you -- don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Laura Newman Trio Known for exceptional musicianship, this jazz trio offers an extensive repertoire of original jazz compositions, classic hits, standards, R&B, acid jazz, funk and pop tunes. The enigmatic trio’s unique connection with their audience stems from their honest love of feelgood tunes. Newman, on saxophone, is joined by Vlad Girshevich on keyboard and Judy Frederickson on drums. Also sitting in with the band will be 11 year old drum phenom Alex Girshevich.

Tony G’s Jam Session Tony Gulizia will lead an all-star jam session with a host of surprise musical guests featured in a one-of-a-kind performance to close out the season of Jazz @ the Market. Chicago born Junior is a legendary jazz pianist with more than 30 albums as a leader, and many more as a sideman. After touring with Dinah Washington and a reunion stint with Cannonball Adderley, Junior joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band, a period he considers as a great learning experience in musicianship, showmanship and the business of music. Jazz Goes to School is an innovative educational program that integrates the study of jazz with social studies at the elementary school level. The program begins its 15th year this fall and is offered free of charge annually to over 1,100 - 4th and 5th graders in Eagle County schools. The program provides students with an in-depth experience of jazz, its history, and its role in contemporary society. Lead by local jazz musician and educator Tony Gulizia, the interactive format gives students an opportunity to learn about the history of jazz and the greatest jazz musicians. Tony and his fellow musicians/ educators then break the music down into its essential parts, so the children understand the foundation of the music itself. The classes involve both demonstration and participation, and the kids get to play the instruments themselves. “We first play jazz for the kids, and then by the third class, the kids get a chance to try for themselves. This is when it all comes together, they hear it, they feel it, they get it. You should see their faces light up!” says Gulizia. And it’s not only the students who enjoy the program. Accolades abound among parents, administrators and teachers: Christie Howell, music teacher at The Vail Academy, said, “Jazz Goes to School helps expose students to music and music history that they otherwise might not receive. Tony Gulizia and his band bring to life the history of jazz and entice students of all ages to learn more about Jazz, which can be a life lesson for all students. Jazz Goes to School enhances any and all music programs and encourages students to expand their knowledge of music.” Music is well documented as an effective tool for teaching kids the critical thinking skills essential to success in any academic discipline. Kimberly Kohlhofer, June Creek Elementary music teacher, puts it this way: “I have

WORKSHOP As part of the Vail Jazz Festival, 12 dedicated and highly gifted high school-aged musicians from throughout North America are chosen to receive scholarships to participate in the Vail Jazz Workshop. With an emphasis on playing by ear (there is no written music), this exceptional learning opportunity, now in its 17th year, enables the student musicians to study and be mentored in an environment that emphasizes intense interaction with their instructors and with their fellow students, while providing them with the unique opportunity to perform alongside legendary professional musicians at the Vail Jazz Festival over Labor Day Weekend. The Workshop is directed by John Clayton, on bass; Jeff Clayton, on sax and woodwinds; Terell Stafford, on trumpet; Bill Cunliffe, on piano; Lewis Nash, on drums; and the newest edition to the Workshop’s teaching staff, Wycliffe Gordon, on trombone. We are deeply indebted to this exceedingly talented and truly dedicated faculty for its extraordinary generosity in sharing their art and knowledge with the students at the Workshop. performers who balance a very demanding international performance career while continuing to “pay it forward” by giving back as teachers and mentors to aspiring jazz musicians. After ten days of intensive study, the students are proudly referred to as the “Vail Jazz All-Stars,” and they perform on several occasions as part of the Vail Jazz Party. Many Workshop alumni have gone on to outstanding careers as jazz musicians, which in turn supports the reputation of the Workshop as one of the finest jazz workshops in the world. A live recording of the performances of the 2012 Vail Jazz All-Stars at this year’s Vail Jazz Festival will be made and offered for sale. All proceeds received will be used to provide scholarships to students for next year’s Workshop. A resident of Wilmette, Il, Daniel started playing alto saxophone in 4th grade, transitioning to tenor sax in 6th grade, but he also has taken lessons in piano (starting in Kindergarten), drums, guitar, and he played bass in the school orchestra. Actively engaged in a variety of school bands, ensembles (wind & jazz) and orchestras, he is now first tenor in the New Trier High School Jazz 1 Ensemble and has won several awards and competitions. Raised in a house filled with the sounds of Basie, Sinatra, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye and Fred & Ginger movies, Daniel’s musical world expanded to include saxophonist Sonny Rollins, whose body of work became the focus for a time of Daniel’s study and transcriptions. Later, Daniel broadened his appreciation for other players and styles, and today he names Sonny, Joe Lovanoand Stan Getz as among his principal sax inspirations. Daniel is active teaching at the Chicago Jesuit Academy, volunteers on Chicago’s west side at the Winnetka Youth Organization and leads a group of high school musicians playing free jazz concerts at retirement homes.

Jeremy Corren, 17 piano

Jeremy lives in Beverly Hills and attends L.A. County High School for the Arts, where he has been active in various ensembles and jazz combos, winning the outstanding soloist award at last year’s BerkleeSchool of Music High School Jazz Competition. Among many other awards and scholarships, Jeremy was selected for the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony and won a Downbeat Student Award for Jazz Composition. Having played in a variety of jazz clubs and performance venues, Jeremy has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival

for the past two years and has studied jazz piano and composition with, among others, Nikos Syropolous, a former Vail Jazz Workshop student (2005). Classically trained since age 9, Jeremy began building his jazz repertory in high school. One of his goals in attending the Vail Jazz Workshop is to become a more open-minded musician, focusing on his listening and interaction skills. No surprise, then, that Jeremy admires those same skills in a trio of influences-- Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Fred Hersch, all known for their subtlety, originality and finesse.

James Francies, 17 piano

Born and raised in Houston, James attends the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, and hopes to eventually attend either the Julliard School or the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. James began his piano study at the age of 7 and since that time has been tutored in the Gospel, Classical and Jazz genres. James has played with a wide variety of combos, groups and bands, including several based at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston. In addition, he has performed in a variety of non-school-based trios, quartets and quintets, in addition to enjoying a variety of solo outings. His awards include Crescent City Jazz Festival awards for both Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Musicianship Award, the HEB Summer Jazz Workshop Duke Ellington Award and his selection as a Grammy®Band Finalist. Influenced by Oscar Peterson, Taylor Eigsti and Robert Glasper (Vail Jazz Workshop 1997), James

especially enjoys playing hard bop, modern, bebop, fusion and avant garde. James frequently plays at church, charity and nursing home functions.

Maximilian Gerl, 17 bass

Max was born in Dallas, the son of two professional violists, in an extended family of other classical musicians. Max studied piano for 6 years (beginning at age 3), switched at 9 to the alto saxophone, then at 11 was drawn to the electric bass. Several years later he was introduced to the upright bass and his studies shifted to that instrument exclusively in his early teen years. Since that time, he has studied at the University of North Texas Jazz Double Bass Workshop, and has won numerous awards and citations, including two Downbeat Student Music Awards, selection as a finalist for the Grammy® Jazz Session and was chosen as the only bassist to perform with the 2012 Texas All-State Jazz Band. Max has performed frequently beginning at age 4 on the piano, then on the alto sax, electric bass and upright bass with a variety of rock, funk and jazz combos. He attends the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Among Max’s bass inspirations are Christian McBride, Scott LaFaro, and Matt Penman.

Coleman Hughes, 16

Born and raised in the Montclair, New Jersey area, Coleman began studying violin at 3 and was studying classical piano by age 5. He started studying drums at 8, and began playing trombone at age 12. With the trombone, Coleman got involved in the jazz program at his school and since that time has attended the Julliard Summer Jazz Workshop, the

Skidmore Summer Jazz Institute, and several other workshops and programs. He attends Newark Academy and has played in a variety of bands, groups and orchestras. Coleman was selected for the 2012 Grammy®Jazz Ensemble and several jazz ensembles with the New Jersey Association of Jazz Educators. He received Downbeat’s Young Jazz Soloist Award, and the Outstanding Soloist Award in the Charles Mingus competition. As musical influences, Coleman cites Slide Hampton for applying ideas from other instruments to the trombone, Curtis Fuller for his phrasing and tone, and J.J.Johnson for creating an entirely new “bebopenabled” technique. After graduation, Coleman hopes to attend a music conservatory; in the meantime, he is involved in community service projects, playing at various nursing homes and schools.

Cameron Kerl, 18 trombone

A native of Puyallup, WA, Cameron is the son of a professional trumpeter, whom he credits for his (and his sister’s) interest in pursuing musical lives. He began studying classical piano and music theory at the age of 8, adding trombone studies at 14. Among a lengthy list of awards for both piano and trombone, Cameron has twice been selected as the Valley Region Solo & Ensemble Competition Winner for Trombone and as Winner for Large Brass Ensemble. Cameron began learning and playing jazz in 7thgrade with his junior high school band. Exposed to Dixieland and big band jazz styles of his father’s ensembles, Cameron took improvisational direction from 26 | V A I L

his dad who sometimes included him in his jazz gigs, and Cameron has in recent years played with a wide variety of combos, orchestras, brass quintets, marching bands and other groups. He cites Andy Martin, Urbie Green and Elliot Mason as his principal influences on the trombone. Cameron has been an active participant in various community service organizations often through his performances for nonprofit groups. He will attend Northwestern University in the fall.

Aidan Lombard, 17 trumpet Originally from Maryland, Aidan now hails from Kenilworth, ILwhere he learned to play the trumpet in his elementary school at age 9. Although he joined the school jazz band in 5th grade, Aidan did not become serious about jazz until several years later when he joined a youth conservatory, Midwest Young Artists, where he was exposed to big band music. Today, Aidan attends New Trier High School and has separate instructors for classical and jazz trumpet, pursuing as many playing opportunities as possible, including blues and rock bands, brass quintets, symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, big bands, combos and a jazz nonet;he also leads his own quartet and frequently plays personal gigs at restaurants and parties around the Chicago area. Aidan names Woody Shaw and Art Farmer among his major influences, but is particularly impressed with Freddie Hubbard’s combination of technical mastery and musicality. Part of Aidan’s long-term plan is to become a music educator; toward that end, he works with his trumpet teacher to assist students and their jazz band at an inner city elementary school in Chicago.

Cameron MacIntosh, 16 drums

Cam resides in Maplewood, NJ, attending Columbia High School, and has been playing drums since he was 9. In addition to his private lessons, he studies weekly with the Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens program, and recently became a member of the Jazz House Big Band, which won Best Big Band at the national Mingus Competition at the Manhattan School of Music. At that same competition in 2012, Cam received the Best Soloist Award. Cam was also a member of the Grammy® Jazz Ensemble and will be the drummer for the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, appearing at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He has performed at many notable venues in the NY area. Playing in a variety of groups and formats in his aim to be a versatile drummer, Cam is particularly interested in big band drumming, gaining inspiration from the bands of Buddy Rich, Ellington, Basie and Stan Kenton; he names Tony Williams, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones among his major influences.

Zachary McKinney, 16

Zack was born in Plantation, FL and now lives in nearby Ft. Lauderdale, attending Dillard Center for the Arts High School where he is drummer for the National Champion DCA Jazz Ensemble. He started playing the piano at age 5 but soon switched to drums.

By 5th grade, Zack was accepted at Parkway School of the Arts where he began his jazz studies while also playing drums, xylophone, timpani and other concert percussion. He currently studies both drums and bass, and has been active in a variety of bands, orchestras rock/pop combos and ensembles. He was awarded Most Outstanding Drummer and Outstand-

ing Overall Musician by Associated Schools of Music, and won the Gold Coast Jazz Society Scholarship Award. Zack volunteers at a private music school to help younger children set up their instruments and teach them to read music. He also plays regularly at various community charitable events in the South Florida area. Zack cites drummers Tony Williams, Ed Thigpen and Philly Joe Jones as among his most significant influences.

David Milazzo, 18 trumpet

A native of Bow, NH, David picked up his dad’s saxophone at the age of 9 and quickly demonstrated his determination to make an impression with the instrument. Within two years, he had auditioned his way into the Windham (NH) Swing Band, touring regionally. Following several summers at the Aebersold Jazz Camp, David won the Judge’s Choice Award at the Berklee College High School Jazz Festival and the Special Citation for Outstanding Musicianship at the 2009 Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival. Two seasons at Berklee College’s 5-week summer program followed, in addition to numerous gigs at various venues in NH, Boston, NY and elsewhere. David was selected for the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, appearing at the Monterey Jazz Festival and touring Japan. He was also selected as a jazz fellowship finalist at the Brubeck Institute, and received a full tuition scholarship at the Berklee College of Music, where he will attend college in September 2012. David cites Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Garrett and Sonny Stitt as his favorite alto saxophone players.

Andrew Sommer, 17 bass

Born in Atlanta and now living in Marietta, GA, Andrew is the son of professional musicians. He began his training at the age of 8 on the classical cello, migrating to the bass by the age of 13. In addition to his private instruction, Andrew has attended a variety of summer music camps, including the Telluride Jazz All-Stars, Julliard Jazz and Aebersold programs. He has been performing with a variety of combos, bands and orchestras since

the age of 10, including the Middle School All-State Orchestra, the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble Jazz Band and the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Andrew counts Ray Brown, John Patitucciand Paul Chambers among his favorite bass players. He hopes to attend college in Manhattan or Boston, to continue his studies in pursuit of his interests in both jazz and classical music. Andrew is an active volunteer with his church, and plays at many local Atlanta-area assisted living centers.

Nathan Sparks, 17 trumpet

Nate, who began piano lessons at the age of 6, resides in Runnells, IA. By the age of 10 he had discovered the trumpet through his elementary school band program, and it soon became the focus of his life. His 7th grade band director sparked his interest in jazz and Nate began studying jazz piano, learning theory and jamming---by 8th grade he’d decided that jazz trumpet would be his future (although he continuesto study fundamental/classical piano). A regular at summer jazz camps, Nate has played with a wide variety of groups in multiple genres, including the Des Moines Youth Symphony, a swing band with Drake University students, the Iowa All-State Jazz Ensemble (on both trumpet and piano), and a rock group. Nate’s awards include Outstanding Soloist at Iowa Jazz Championships, Outstanding Brass Soloist – State Solo and Ensemble Contest, selection into the Jazz Band of America, trumpet finalist with the Grammy® Band, and acceptance into the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. His principal influences on the trumpet have been Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, and Booker Little.

Dave Brubeck A Summer Long Celebration

The Vail Jazz Festival celebrates the life of Dave Brubeck throughout the summer of 2012. The 91-year-old jazz master has been designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress. His biography on p.36 (abbreviated due to the nature of this publication) describes the highlights of his seven-decades’ long career. Best known as a jazz pianist and a prolific composer, Dave has expanded the boundaries of jazz and integrated it into classical music, all the while inspiring generations of performers and audiences with his prodigious talent. We are extremely honored to have the opportunity to pay homage to this great American artist.

Friday, August 31, 8:40 PM Grammy® awarding winning arranger, composer and pianist Bill Cunliffe will lead a multi-media show celebrating Dave’s life, using classic video, narrative and a live performance of Dave’s music. (see p. 35 for full description).

The Vail Jazz Festival presented its first Multi-Media Tribute in 2004 when Bill Cunliffe paid homage to Billy Strayhorn. Since then this extremely popular presentation format has been an annual feature of the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party. This year, due to popular demand, we have expanded the number of multi-media presentations during the Labor Day Weekend to three. The Multi-Media Tribute format is an ideal way to effectively communicate to the audience why an individual artist or group attained such fame and is now considered to be a giant of the world of jazz. The format allows the presenters to combine narrative, musical performance and video to communicate to the audience in rich detail the talents and virtuosity of, as well as the history of, a jazz great’s life. By blending these elements in a unique way that entertains the audience, while providing an understanding of the extremely important contributions these marvelous jazz musicians have made to the music that we care so much about, we not only honor them but keep the history of jazz alive.

Bill Cunliffe’s Multi-Media Tribute to Dave Brubeck

Friday, August 31 – 8:40 PM David Warren (Dave) Brubeck was born in Concord, California in 1920, son of a cattle rancher and a classical piano teacher. Though intent on becoming a rancher, his zoology professor told him to “stop wasting my time and yours,” and Brubeck transferred to the music department, from which he was nearly expelled when it was discovered he could not read music. Despite his knack with unusual counterpoint and atypical harmonies, he was permitted to graduate only after he promised never to teach piano! Brubeck was drafted and served in Patton’s Third Army, where he was ordered to form

a band after a hit performance in a Red Cross show. Later, after some disappointing outings with Paul Desmond, Cal Tjader and others, Brubeck organized the Dave Brubeck Quartet (including Desmond on saxophone, Joe Morello, drums, and Eugene Wright, bass) in 1951. The Quartet took up a long residency at San Francisco’s Black Hawk nightclub, supplemented by many gigs at college campuses, which resulted in a number of popular recordings including Jazz Goes to College (1954). In 1959, the quartet released Time Out, which quickly achieved platinum status and remains among the bestselling jazz albums of all time. It is a stunning example of Brubeck’s iconic melding of unusual time signatures (9/8 and 5/4), contrasting rhythms, meters and tonalities, all wrapped in unforgettable melodies. At their peak in the early ‘60s, the Brubeck Quartet was releasing as many as four albums a year. Among countless other honors, DownBeat inducted Brubeck into its Hall of Fame, and Brubeck received the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award. Four of his six children continue the family tradition as professional musicians.

John Clayton’s Multi-Media Tribute to Ray Brown

Saturday, September 1 – 9:25 PM Grammy® winner and Downbeat Hall-of-Famer Raymond Matthews (Ray) Brown was born in Pittsburgh in 1926. His father was an avid music listener and at an early age Ray was already familiar with the piano stylings of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fats Waller and Art Tatum; Brown began piano lessons at the age of eight. Daunted by the number of piano players in his high school, and noting a vacancy for the bass in the school’s jazz band, he switched to the bass and soon became visible on the local jazz scene. An early influence on Brown’s playing was Jimmy Blanton, bassist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Hearing of the vibrant jazz scene on 52nd Street, Brown bought a one-way ticket to New York at the age of 20, met up with pianist Hank Jones and was introduced to Dizzy Gillespie, who immediately hired him to fill a vacancy in his band, remaining there from W W W. 1946-1951. During those years, he met Ella Fitzgerald, who toured with the band in 1947, and the two soon married; he continued as her musical director even after their divorce in 1952. With John Lewis, Kenny Clarke and Milt Jackson, Brown enjoyed great success and popularity as a member of the Milt Jackson Quartet (the forerunner of The Modern Jazz Quartet), and later was a longstanding member of the Oscar Peterson Trio. With his feather-fingered, guitar-like virtuosity, Brown is considered among the greatest bass players in jazz, elevating the role of the bass well beyond its traditional “thumpthump-thump” to a realm of elegant, sophisticated tonality, yet never losing its soulfulness…or as he referred to it, “the grits & gravy.” His playing is featured on more than 2,000 recordings, and he accompanied some of the leading artists of his era, including Frank Sinatra, Billy Eckstine, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and Diana Krall. Vail Jazz Festival artists Benny Green and Jeff Hamilton were members of the Ray Brown Trio and they, along with John Clayton, are among many prominent musicians mentored by Ray Brown, who died in 2002 at age 75.

Byron Stripling’s Multi-Media Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie

Sunday, September 2 - 8:40 PM John Birks (Dizzy) Gillespie was born in South Carolina in 1917. The youngest of nine children, his father was a local bandleader, resulting in the availability of a variety of instruments, including the piano, which he started to play at the age of four. Later, he taught himself to play trombone, and was playing trumpet by the age of 12. He idolized Roy Eldridge and after hearing him on the radio, he dreamed of becoming a jazz musician. At 18, he got his first professional job and later played with the orchestras of Edgar Hayes and Teddy Hill, essentially replacing his idol Eldridge as first trumpet. After freelancing with a number of bands, Gillespie joined Cab Calloway’s orchestra in 1939 but was fired after two years; Calloway disapproved of Gillespie’s mischievous humor and adventuresome soloing. While with Calloway, however, Gillespie started writing big band music for Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey and the

Ella Fitzgerald Orchestra. In 1945, he left the big band realm, preferring to play with smaller combos. With Charlie Parker, Gillespie jammed at famous jazz clubs and, along with the likes of Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and Oscar Pettiford, introduced a new vocabulary of musical phrases that sounded radically different, harmonically and rhythmically, leading to the rise of Bebop. In the late ‘40s, Gillespie became a proponent of Afro-Cuban & Afro-Latin music elements, bringing them to greater prominence in jazz while incorporating an underlying Bebop thrust. Among his many awards are the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honors Award and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France’s most prestigious cultural award. Gillespie’s music was characterized by the element of surprise, with perpetually varied phrases, breakneck runs followed by pauses, huge interval leaps, long high notes, slurs and smears, adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his iconic bent horn and pouched cheeks, and his light-hearted personality were essential elements in popularizing his own music and, more broadly, Bebop. He died in 1993 at age 75.

Since the late 1990s, we have annually presented a very special show, The Gospel Prayer Meetin’, at the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party in order to highlight the extremely important role that Gospel music has played in the development of jazz. Over the years other subjects have also been explored from time to time and these shows have not only been extremely entertaining, but also very informative. This year we will once again present The Gospel Prayer Meetin’, but we will also present two additional shows (described below) that we believe will carry on the tradition that we have established – to entertain our audience while providing an opportunity for jazz novices as well as hardcore jazz fans to learn more about jazz . We have named these special shows, “Jazz in Depth,” and our goal is to present these types of performances in an intriguing way that not only entertains our audience, but also provides information and insights about the multifaceted music that is jazz. This year’s Jazz in Depth presentations will give the audience an insider’s look at the B-3 organ and the history of the trombone in jazz, along with an exploration of one of the roots of the “jazz tree” – Gospel music.

Bobby Floyd, Keys to the B-3

Saturday, September 1- 10:55 PM The Hammond electric organ, invented by Laurens Hammond in 1934, was originally sold to churches as a lower-cost alternative to wind-driven pipe organs. It was widely used in military chapels and military base theaters during World War II and the Hammond sound, familiar to mid-century veterans, is believed to have contributed to its popularity in the post-war period. Although many different models of Hammond organs were produced, the Hammond B-3, which started production in 1955, emerged within 20 years as a standard keyboard instrument for jazz (as well as blues, country, rock, and gospel). Because B-3s haven’t been produced since 1974, they are zealously maintained by their owners: “mint” B-3s are

selling for 3-4 times their original sales price of about $2,800. A distinctive feature of the B-3 was its use of a separate sound cabinet, most often a Leslie speaker, which helps impart a distinctive whirling/swirling sound to the B-3. (A large wooden cabinet, usually placed adjacent to the organ, reproduces the Doppler effect to alter sound by employing spinning treble horns and a stationary woofer with a spinning rotor—both of variable speed controlled by the performer.) Among the other distinctive qualities of the B-3 is its harmonic percussion effect, specific harmonic overtones added to the attack envelope of a note—a distinctive “plink” sound—triggered (or constrained) under certain performance circumstances. In addition, there is a unique percussive key click (originally considered to be a design defect) that has also become part of the classic B-3 sound. The Hammond bass pedalboard, organized like a keyboard, consists of 25 notes, effective use of which (it is often joked) have put many a bass player out of work! Bobby Floyd’s mastery of the instrument will be especially evident during this performance, as special video projections will display both the keyboard and pedalboard for this unique musical treat.

Niki Haris’ Gospel Prayer Meetin’

Sunday, September 2 - 9:30 AM Gospel music in its broadest sense is defined by culture and social context and has a long history which predates the arrival of Europeans and African slaves to the New World. Today when Americans use the phrase to describe music that is related to jazz, they are referring to a unique American style of music that evolved initially from religious songs that trace their roots to the slaves’ field/work songs (call and response) and so-called “spirituals,” that emerged as the slaves were exposed to, and indoctrinated in, the religion of their slave masters. Initially these songs held out the hope of a better life and promised that salvation was near. The music was steeped in deep emotion and heart aching pain. When these passionate songs and the strong African music traditions and rhythms of the slaves were mixed in the “musical melting pot” that contained European musical ideas and concepts, the blues and ultimately jazz were born. We therefore present the Gospel Prayer Meetin’ to recognize and pay tribute to the critical contribution that this music has made in shaping jazz. Be prepared to join in and put your hands together, to sing and to feel the spirit when Niki Haris and an all-star ensemble present the roots of jazz.

Wycliffe Gordon’s History of the Jazz Trombone

Sunday, September 2 - 3:30 PM History of the Jazz Trombone is a trip down memory lane with visits to some of the most prolific trombonists in jazz. From Kid Ory to Jack Teagarden, Tommy Dorsey to JJ Johnson, Joe “Tricky Sam” Nanton to Al Grey, Buster Cooper to Frank Rosolino, the jazz trombone has had a wide span of individual “voices” throughout its

history. Beginning in the early 1900s, an important element of Dixieland jazz was the trombone, outlining the chords by playing a tuba or bass line, or sometimes playing a countermelody to the cornet, sometimes throwing in glissandos and other raucous effects. Beginning in the 1930s, bands of the Swing Era featured multiple trombones, and trombonists started to enjoy a more prominent role, often being featured soloists or forming their own bands a la Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller. In the ‘40s and ‘50s, the extremely fast lines of Bebop introduced major hurdles for some slide trombone players, and their prominence as soloists began to fade. As a result, some trombonists embraced the valve trombone in order to play the increasingly difficult lines, while others evolved their skills on the slide trombone, pushing the technical limits of the instrument and sometimes achieving stunning virtuosity in both ensemble and solo work. This aural excursion through the rich history of the jazz trombone is sure to educate and entertain!

JAZZARTISTS ERNIE ADAMS One of the most popular and highly-regarded musicians in Chicago, percussionist Ernie Adams is an allstyles drummer who has performed and recorded with many of the world’s great musicians. Known for perfect timing, solid groove, and brilliant technique, Ernie combines his percussive mastery with great musical taste and a wonderful personality. Having graduated as a jazz major from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Ernie has been a Jazz Mentor at Ravinia since 1995, tutoring young drummers and percussionists. He has performed, recorded, and toured with Ramsey Lewis, Al DiMiola, Joe Williams, Billy Dickens, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Cole, Dianne Reeves, Stanley Turrentine, Ahmad Jamal, Richie Cole, James Moody, 50 | V A I L

Joe Zawinul, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Orbert Davis, and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. Ernie has played on three albums and a DVD with The Al DiMeola Electric Band, and was on their world tour from 1996 to 2006. He has been playing and recording with Ramsey Lewis for the past 12 years.

CYRILLE AIMÉE Born in France to a French father and Dominican mother, Cyrille’s vocal stylings combine the driving force of Dominican rhythms with her fascination for French gypsy swing. She placed second in the prestigious 2010 Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition and has released four albums, including two with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo. W W W. VA I L J A Z Z . O R G

Cyrille spent her childhood in France, Africa and Larchmont, NY. When home in Fontainbleau, France, she became exposed to the gypsy jazz festival in honor of Django Reinhardt. She later moved to the Dominican Republic where she developed a strong following for her jazz singing. Enrolling in SUNY Purchase Jazz Conservancy was a turning point for Cyrille, who continued to return regularly to the Dominican Republic to perform. In 2007, Cyrille participated in the Montreux Voice Competition, winning both first prize and the special public prize. Cyrille has become a regular on the New York jazz scene, appearing at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, Iridium, and Birdland with Joel Frahm, Steve Davis, Spike Wilner, Tom Kennedy and Anat Cohen among others.

JAMES CARTER Detroit native, James Carter has become a master of reed instruments, from sopranino (higher in pitch than a soprano sax) all the way down to contrabass saxophones, and contrabass and bass clarinets - electrifying the jazz world. Although fueled by a deep respect and intimate knowledge of traditional jazz, James is playing a major role in keeping jazz fresh, relevant and with an eye on the future. He first toured Europe with the International Jazz Band at the age of 16. He has performed, toured and recorded with greats like Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, DeeDee Bridgewater, Cyrus Chestnut, Regina Carter, and Kathleen Battle. James is also an authority on vintage horns, owning an extensive collection. He has won the Down Beat Critics’ and Readers’ Choice Awards repeatedly, as a prominent performer and recording artist on the jazz scene since the late 1980s. Among his recent releases are At The Crossroads and Caribbean Rhapsody.

JEFF CLAYTON Born in Los Angeles, alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton cites the “emotional majesty” of his childhood Baptist church as a major musical inspiration. Jeff took a break from studying oboe at California State University Northridge to tour with Stevie Wonder. Jeff credits saxophonists Johnny Hodges and Cannonball Adderley as his most significant jazz influences, along with trumpeter Thad Jones and bassist Ray Brown. He co-leads the Grammy® 52 | V A I L

nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with his brother John and drummer Jeff Hamilton and is co-leader of the Clayton Brothers Quintet and Sextet. In demand as a touring and studio musician, Jeff has recorded with Wonder, Kurt Elling, Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Madonna and Earth Wind & Fire. He has worked with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton and Lena Horne, and had a short stint with Count Basie & His Orchestra. Jeff has toured with Gene Harris, Dianne Reeves, Joe Cocker, B.B. King and Ray Charles and was a member of the Philip Morris Superband from 1989-1991. He is featured on Ray Brown’s 1990 release Evergreen recorded with Milt Jackson. The Clayton Brothers’ Grammy® nominated releases include Brother to Brother and The New Song and Dance. Their newest recording, The Gathering, is scheduled for release on September 1, 2012. This is Jeff’s 17th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

JOHN CLAYTON Los Angeles native John Clayton began seriously studying the bass at 16 with Ray Brown. At the age of 19, the Grammy® winner and eight-time Grammy® nominee became the bassist for Henry Mancini’s television series “The Mancini Generation.” After receiving a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Indiana, John toured with Monty Alexander and Count Basie & His Orchestra. He moved to Amsterdam and was principal bassist in the Amsterdam Philharmonic for five years. John counts among his mentors, Robert Farnon, Count Basie, Johnny Mandel, Henry Mancini, and Quincy Jones, among others. He has written and arranged music for Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater (including her Grammy® winning Dear Ella), Natalie Cole, Regina Carter, Milt Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, George Benson, Paul McCartney and Dr. John. He has received commissions from the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, the American Jazz Philharmonic, the Iceland Symphony, the Metropole Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Big Band, the Richmond Symphony and the Amsterdam Philharmonic. He is co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton

Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet and Sextet. He is president of the International Bassist Association and artistic director of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and Centrum Jazz Workshop. John is Director of Education and a board member of the Vail Jazz Foundation and has been the Director of the Vail Jazz Workshop for the past 17 years. John is featured on Paul McCartney’s latest project Kisses on the Bottom. Recent CBQ recordings include the Grammy® nominated albums Brother to Brother and The New Song and Dance and the band’s newest recording, The Gathering, is scheduled for release on September 1, 2012.

BILL CUNLIFFE Jazz pianist, composer and Grammy® winning arranger Bill Cunliffe is known for his innovative and swinging recordings and compositions. Bill began his career as pianist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, and James Moody. He has since established himself as a solo artist and bandleader, with more than a dozen albums under his name. Bill’s recordings show his affinity for Latin rhythms while paying homage to some of his musical heroes including Paul Simon, Bud Powell and Oliver Nelson. Bill currently plays with his trio, his big band and his Latin band Imaginación nationally and internationally. Bill has received four Grammy® nominations and two Emmy® nominations and was awarded a Grammy® for Best Instrumental Arrangement for “West Side Story Medley,” on the album Resonance Big Band Plays Tribute to Oscar Peterson (Resonance Records). He is also a winner of the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Bill earned a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and is currently a jazz studies professor at Cal State Fullerton. Recent albums include The Blues and the Abstract Truth. This is Bill’s 17th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

GRAHAM DECHTER Guitarist and Los Angeles native Graham Dechter is a fast-rising young jazz musician. Born into a family of musicians, Graham’s journey began at the age of five when he began taking violin lessons and composing orchestral pieces. It was at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California

that Graham discovered his passion for guitar, and began pursuing his life’s calling - jazz. Graham studied improvisation with legendary jazz bassist Marshall Hawkins and also studied privately with guitarist Jim Fox, taking every opportunity to attend live performances of his musical heroes, with many of whom he would later perform and record. Upon graduation, Graham entered the Jazz Studies program at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. After completing a year at Eastman and at the invitation of Jeff Hamilton, the 19-year-old Graham accepted the guitar seat in the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Graham has performed and recorded with Ernie Andrews, Charles Aznavour, Michael Bublé, Regina Carter, Freddie Cole, Natalie Cole, Bill Charlap, Paquito D’Rivera, Kurt Elling, Roberta Gambarini, Wycliffe Gordon, and Benny Green. His latest release is Right On Time.

DIEGO FIGUEIREDO Diego was born in Brazil and started playing a small guitar at the age of four. He then moved on to the mandolin at the age of six and by 12, he was playing in theaters and local pubs with a demonstrated talent for improvising and harmonizing. In 1999, after winning first place in a South American music competition Diego was awarded a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. Winner of many competitions including the Montreux Jazz Competition and the VISA Prize, the now 29-year old is considered one of the world’s most talented guitarists. Diego performs throughout the world in a variety of musical genres. In addition to playing guitar, Diego is an arranger, conductor, multi-instrumentalist and producer. His duo outings with Cyrille Aimée include Smile and Just the Two of Us. Diego is now performing a fusion of jazz, Bossa-nova, and classical music in his concert titled “From the Classical to the Jazz.” Diego’s unique interpretation paired with his technique and emotionally-infused performance gives the audience an experience like no other.

BOBBY FLOYD The passion Bobby Floyd displays on piano, organ and keyboards is the result of innate talent, years of practice and decades of experience. Floyd displays a unique musical power that uplifts and inspires audiences around the world. Floyd has performed with Ray Charles, Rusty Bryant, Jeff Tyzik, Chris Howes, Byron Stripling, and Sarah Morrow. His current touring schedule includes performances as featured soloist with orchestras such as the Rochester Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Floyd, who resides in Columbus, Ohio, is also a frequent soloist with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. His recent performances in Europe and Japan have garnered high praise and he continues to accompany the top jazz, blues and gospel artists in the country. Floyd has taught at Ohio State University and the world famous Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshops, in addition to his private studio. His critically acclaimed albums Interpretations, Setting The Standards, Floyd’s Finest Gift, and Notes To And From My Friends demonstrate his ability to electrify audiences and have received the highest critical praise.

COREY FONVILLE Corey Fonville of Virginia Beach has been playing drums since he was two and, as a child, could often be found sitting behind a junior drum kit playing along with recordings of great fusion and modern jazz greats from his father’s collection. Appearing on his first CD by the age of eight, Fonville has since appeared on several other CDs, recording with a variety of professionals including saxophonist Richie Cole. He has also played with Cyrus Chestnut and Jeremy Pelt, and from time to time plays with Nicholas Payton. Fonville was a member of the Grammy® Jazz Ensembles in 2005, 2007 & 2008 and was awarded the prestigious Brubeck Fellowship in 2009. He has played at many important venues including the Telluride Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. Corey attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2006.

WYCLIFFE GORDON Born in Waynesboro, Georgia, Wycliffe Gordon found the trombone at age 12 and has never stopped adding new instruments to his repertoire. Now traveling the world playing and composing hard-swinging, straightahead jazz, Gordon has been hailed by critics and is a sixtime winner of the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Trombonist of the Year. In addition to his always memorable solo performances, he leads the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, has been a featured artist on Billy Taylor’s “Jazz at The Kennedy Center” series, and is a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Joe Henderson, Eric Reed, Randy Sandke and Branford Marsalis. Wycliffe has released 16 solo and seven co-leader albums and was commissioned to compose a new score for the 1925 silent film “Body and Soul.” His musical tribute to Muhammad Ali was commissioned and premiered by The Brass Band of Battle Creek. Recent albums include his tribute to Louis Armstrong Hello Pops! , Volume Two, The Word, and Cone and T-Staff. TV appearances include the Grammy® Awards, the PBS’ “Swingin’ with the Duke,” “Live from Lincoln Center,” and he appeared in Ken Burns’ documentary “Jazz.” Gordon was also guest artist and commentator on NPR’s tribute to Tommy Dorsey. Wycliffe is a founding faculty member of the Jazz Studies Program at The Juilliard School and he was the youngest member of the U.S. Statesmen of Jazz and a musical ambassador for the U.S. State Department. This is Wycliffe’s first year as an instructor at the Vail Jazz Workshop.

BENNY GREEN Born in New York City, Benny grew up in Berkeley, CA and began classical piano studies at age seven. Listening to his father’s Monk and Bird records while trying to play along, jazz and improvisation soon captured his interest. As a teenager, he worked with Eddie Henderson and got some big band experience with a group lead by Chuck Israels. After graduation and some freelance experience around the Bay Area, Benny moved back to New York City where veteran

pianist Walter Bishop, Jr. helped him develop his own sound and style. After a short stint with Bobby Watson, Benny worked with Betty Carter and joined Art Blakey’s band before making the switch to Freddie Hubbard’s quintet. In 1993, Oscar Peterson chose Benny as the first recipient of the Glen Gould International Protégé Prize, and soon after, Benny replaced Gene Harris in Ray Brown’s Trio, a stint that lasted for four years. In addition to a prolific career as a sideman, Benny has released many albums in solo and trio settings and two duo albums with Russell Malone. Some of his main influences include Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Hank Jones, Bud Powell and Ahmad Jamal. His latest recordings are Source in a trio setting and Prelude, a quintet outing.

TONY GULIZIA The accordion was Tony’s gateway instrument, leading him into the ethnically diverse gathering spaces of his hometown of Omaha, NE as a boy of only 12. Accompanied by his father and his brother, Tony was soon veering off the oom-pah path into the Shangri-la of jazz improvisation. He discovered piano soon after, and now he’d as soon get cookin’ at the keys as breathe. Mr. G, as he is often called, relocated to the Vail Valley in 1992, but continued to present ‘Artists in School’ Residences for the Nebraska Arts Council and Mid American Arts Alliance. In 1996, he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the State of Nebraska. He gigs locally roughly 42 weeks straight, without so much as a day of rest in between gigs, often packing two or three gigs into a single day. Tony has taught locally at the Eagle County Charter Academy for 19 years. In 1998, Tony partnered with the Vail Jazz Foundation to start Jazz Goes to School and continues to lead the instruction of the program today. Tony’s weekly local radio show, Jazz at Its Peak, a two-hour program, airs twice on Sundays, and explores all things jazz. His ability to educate his audience, both in person and over the radio, has expanded jazz audiences. Tony is recognized locally as, and has duly earned the name, “Vail’s Jazz Ambassador”.

JEFF HAMILTON Los Angeles-based Jeff Hamilton’s versatility and dynamic drumming have won him rave reviews for decades. Jeff is featured with some of the top names in jazz and pop on more than 200 recordings with 21 Grammy® nominations and 10 Grammy® Awards. He also performs and records with his own trio and as co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. His own albums include the recently released Red Sparkle and earlier efforts Symbiosis and From Studio 4. Of Hamilton’s work with the Clayton Brothers on the release, The Music, Jazz Times writes, “Always evident is...the sensitivity and sizzle of Jeff Hamilton’s seasoned drums.” Born in Indiana, Jeff listened to big band records and began playing drums at the age of eight to Oscar Peterson’s music. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, “Philly” Joe Jones, and Shelly Manne were important influences, and his first big break came with the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Hamilton played in Lionel Hampton’s Band until 1975 when he joined the Monty Alexander Trio with bassist John Clayton. A childhood dream was fulfilled in 1978 when he joined Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd. Prior to forming his own trio in 1995, he performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie & His Orchestra, and Rosemary Clooney and the Ray Brown Trio. The Los Angeles Jazz Society named Jeff and his musical partner John Clayton as 2006 Musicians of the Year. He has toured with Diana Krall and appeared in Natalie Cole’s “Great Performances” on PBS. Jeff is part-owner of Bosphorus Cymbals.

KAREN HAMMACK A native Californian, and daughter of a studio pianist and arranger, Karen discovered blues piano at age 14 which led her into the worlds of jazz, gospel, funk, soul, rock, pop and singing/songwriting. She has performed and recorded with Michael McDonald, Bill Frisell, Jackson Browne, Niki Haris, Tierney Sutton, Kate McGarry, Eric Marienthal, Vinnie Colaiuta and Julie Christensen,among others. Karen is busy as a performer, composer, teacher, arranger, and recording artist. Karen has been recognized for her true and sincere singing and writing. Her highly intimate, personal

style is evident on her latest recording My Beating Heart, featuring 14 pieces both written by and performed by Karen. It features Richard Stekol, Greg Leisz, Chris Conner, and others. Tierney Sutton, a three time Grammy® nominee for Best Jazz Vocal Album stated, “This is the most true and sincere singing and writing I have heard, maybe ever...but at the very least, in a very, very long time.”

NIKI HARIS Singer/songwriter, arranger, dancer and choreographer Niki Haris’ dynamic performances reflect her love of the arts. Daughter of Grammy® nominated jazz pianist Gene Harris, Niki was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan and later pursued her education and singing career in southern California. She has worked with Ray Charles, Dianne Reeves, Nancy Wilson, David Sanborn, Michael Sembello, Leann Rimes, Michelle Branch, Santana, Kylie Minogue, Luther Vandross, All Saints, Wilton Felder of the Jazz Crusaders, Stanley Turrentine, the Righteous Bros., Julian Lennon, Anita Baker, Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston and toured and recorded for 18 years with Madonna. Niki also toured with her father in promotion of their albums Down Home Blues and their inspirational album In His Hands. After her father’s passing and the release of their live album Jazz Alley Cats, Niki refocused on her love of jazz and today carries on her father’s legacy. Niki performs at a multitude of benefits for AIDS, cancer research as well as Camp Harmony benefitting inner-city children. She is also a strong supporter for the Music in the Classroom program and RADD (Rockers Against Drunk Driving). She diligently lends her time others and is an annual participant in the Season for Non-Violence. Niki’s latest albums are I’m Glad There is You (with Wycliffe Gordon) and Niki Haris And Friends.

TAMIR HENDELMAN Beginning his keyboard studies as a young child in Tel Aviv, Israel, Tamir moved to the United States at the age of 12 and within two years had won Yamaha’s national keyboard competition. Tamir then studied at the Tanglewood Institute and received a Bachelor of Music Composition degree from Eastman School of Music in 1993. He was named the youngest musical director for 56 | V A I L

the Lovewell Institute, a national arts education non-profit organization. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1996, Tamir has been steadily engaged as a pianist and arranger having recorded and toured with musical greats such as Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, John Pizzarelli, Gladys Knight, Diana Krall and others. He joined the Jeff Hamilton Trio in 2000, contributing arrangements for recordings and for the Japanese, European and United States live tours. He has performed with the Jeff Hamilton Trio, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Houston Person, Jeff Clayton, Phil Upchurch, Rickey Woddard, John Clayton and Barbara Morrison. Tamir also leads his own trio, with recent releases Playground and Destinations.

JUSTIN KAUFLIN Virginia Beach native Justin Kauflin’s unusual musical talent, recognized as early as age two, was nurtured with classical training on the violin and piano. From age six, he began performing in concerts, home visits and weddings, eventually becoming concertmaster for several orchestras. Blind since age 11, Justin switched to jazz piano in high school and began performing jazz professionally by age 15. Kauflin received a Presidential Scholarship at William Paterson University where he was mentored by Clark Terry, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Music/Jazz Performance. He has performed with a wide range of musicians, including his own trio, in venues such as Blue Note, Village Vanguard, Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Jazz Standard, Blues Alley and many others. At 23, Kauflin was leader, producer, composer and player on his first CD Introducing Justin Kauflin, and is featured in an upcoming documentary about his mentor, trumpeter Clark Terry. Justin attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2003.

CHRISTOPH LUTY Bassist Christoph Luty currently resides in the Los Angeles area and maintains a busy concert schedule, appearing in venues throughout the US, Japan, and Europe. In addition to performing, Christoph is a remarkable teacher, educating young bassists at California State

University Long Beach, as well as at his private studio. He earned his Masters of Music degree from the University of Southern California and continues to play with his mentor John Clayton. Luty is best known for his big, natural sound, melodic bass lines and solos, and articulate arco playing. Luty is currently a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and longtime bassist of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He has collaborated, recorded and toured with the likes of Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, Shirley Horn, Milt Jackson, Curtis Stigers, Jeff Clayton, Bill Cunliffe, Harry Allen and many other jazz notables.

LEWIS NASH Lewis Nash is the drummer of choice for many veteran jazz masters and for some of today’s brightest emerging stars, having appeared on more than 300 albums. Born in Phoenix, Lewis began performing with local jazz bands at the age of 19 while attending Arizona State University. At 21, he was his hometown’s “first call” jazz drummer, performing with legends like Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Barney Kessell and Red Garland when their tours brought them to town. Lewis moved to New York City in 1981 and joined vocalist Betty Carter’s trio with whom he toured for four years. He has performed or recorded with jazz immortals including Oscar Peterson, J.J. Johnson, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, Ron Carter, Jim Hall and Ray Brown as well as with Wynton and Branford Marsalis. He was a member of pianist Tommy Flanagan’s trio for 10 years. Lewis leads his own groups from duo to septet. In addition to many touring and recording credits, he has become highly sought-after as a jazz educator. His lectures and workshops at elementary and high schools, music camps, universities and conservatories worldwide are as much in demand as his bandstand and studio skills. A faculty member at the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies, this is his eleventh year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop. Lewis’ solo outings include Stompin’ At The Savoy, It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing, and Rhythm Is My Business.

HOUSTON PERSON Born in 1934, Houston grew up in Florence, SC and played piano before switching to tenor saxophone. Person studied music at South Carolina State College (where he was inducted in the school’s Hall of Fame) and later pursued advanced studies at Hartt College of Music in Hartford Connecticut. Houston enjoyed early gigs in West Germany while serving in the Army, playing with Don Ellis, Eddie Harris, Cedar Walton and others. Soon after, he played as a sideman with organist Johnny Hammond and his group, co-led by Etta Jones. For thirty years, Houston and Etta were musical partners, recording, performing and touring regularly. As a bandleader, Houston has recorded more than 75 albums featuring Charles Brown, Bill Charlap, Charles Earland, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver and many others. Ask him what is important in his music and Houston notes that, “It’s important that it’s relaxing...I am always going to play the things that I think contribute to good jazz, such as the blues and swinging.” Among his recent releases are So Nice, a septet outing and The Way We Were, a newly released live recording with Etta Jones from a concert in 2000.

JOE SANDERS New Yorker Joe Sanders has played, recorded and toured with many of today’s greatest jazz musicians including Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Gerald Clayton, Christian Scott and Taylor Eigsti. Tutored in his early years by Catherine McGinn of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Sanders is the product of several renowned music programs, including the Brubeck Institute where he studied with Christian McBride, and the Thelonious Monk Institute under Terence Blanchard. Having received 1-on-1 lessons and invaluable inspiration from extraordinary bassists such as John Clayton, Ron Carter and Charlie Haden, Sanders now leads his own band—Joe Sanders’ Infinity—and tours extensively in the US and Europe with the Gerald Clayton Trio. Joe attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2001. His latest release is Introducing Joe Sanders, and he is featured on the Grammy® nominated Gerald Clayton release Two-Shade.

TERELL STAFFORD It all started for Terell Stafford when he picked up a trumpet at 13 and never put it down. Trained in classical and jazz trumpet, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and his masters at Rutgers University. Terell’s career was launched in the early 1990s when he recorded and performed with Bobby Watson’s acclaimed quintet, Horizon, a band he continues to play with today. In 1997, McCoy Tyner added Terell to his Latin All-Stars Band saying, “Terell is one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player. He has his own voice on his instrument - a very personal sound.” For more than 20 years, Terell has performed with the Clayton Brothers Quintet, Bill Cunliffe, Cedar Walton and Herbie Mann and has appeared on more than 80 recordings. He is a member of the Grammy® winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and is prominently featured on a number of Grammy® nominated recordings. In addition to touring with the Kenny Barron Quintet, Terell has played with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and is a member of Matt Wilson’s Arts and Crafts. To date, Terell has released six albums including the highly acclaimed This Side of Strayhorn. Active as a music educator, Terell is Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University and a faculty member at the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies. He has taught at the Vail Jazz Workshop for 16 years.

CURTIS STIGERS Pushing the boundaries of conventional jazz performers, singer/songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers is at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers. Blurring the lines between jazz, pop, soul, rock, blues and country, Curtis achieved early success on the pop charts with his appearance on “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. DownBeat Magazine named him a “Rising Male Star” and his You Inspire Me was the London Times’ number one jazz album of 2003. He’s toured worldwide with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Prince and has shared billing with jazz greats George Benson, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Randy and Michael Brecker and Toots Thielemans. He has performed on “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman” and JazzTimes called him “one of the best 58 | V A I L

male jazz singers of his generation.” Curtis has appeared on albums by Al Green, Jules Shear, Suzzy Roche, and Julia Fordham, and his early mentor Gene Harris. His commitment to song craft is his touchstone and he demonstrates subtle swing, exquisite phrasing and depth of emotion in his recent albums, Real Emotional and Lost in Dreams, both on Concord Records. He was also nominated for an Emmy® Award for the theme for “The Sons of Anarchy.” Touring extensively in Europe, he has a large and loyal following and was recently named “International Male Jazz Singer of the Year” in Germany. He regularly appears in the British Isles with a stop at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in London and in 2009 performed at the Proms at Royal Albert Hall. His latest release is Let’s Go Out Tonight.

BYRON STRIPLING Columbus Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling has become a national favorite, soloing with Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Utah Symphony, and The American Jazz Philharmonic. An accomplished actor and singer, Stripling was chosen for the lead role of the Broadway musical, “Satchmo.” His featured cameo performance in the television movie, “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles,” and his critically-acclaimed performance in the 42nd Street production of “From Second Avenue to Broadway” complete his notable stage credentials. Born in Atlanta, the son of a classical singer, Stripling earned his stripes as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra, under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster. He has played with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson, and Buck Clayton in addition to The Lincoln Center Classical Jazz Orchestra, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and The GRP All Star Big Band. In addition to his performing career, Stripling regularly conducts seminars and master classes. Stripling was educated at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. JEFF TYZIK Jeff Tyzik has earned a reputation as one of America’s foremost pops conductors. A consummate musician, Tyzik is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming, and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. Now in his seventeenth season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Tyzik is highly sought after as a guest conductor across North America, with recent guest appearances including the Boston Pops, the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Starting out as a jazz trumpeter, Tyzik worked with Chuck Mangione and Doc Severinsen, winning a Grammy Award for producing the 1986 album The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen. Tyzik holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music. An accomplished composer, Tyzik has written over 200 works for orchestra, including a trombone concerto commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts. He also has produced and composed theme music for many of the major television networks and released six of his own albums.

Recording and touring nationally with Rachael, Warren continues to tour internationally with groups headed up by Bobby Watson, Karriem Riggins and Christian McBride. WARREN WOLF Warren Wolf is a talented multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, MD who at the age of three embarked on his musical career under the guidance of this father, Warren Wolf, Sr. He is trained on the vibraphone/marimba, drums and piano and has a deep background in all genres of music including classical, ragtime, and jazz. Warren’s diverse musical education began at Peabody Preparatory for eight years studying classical music. During his high school years, Wolf attended the Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied under current Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Member John Locke.
