DEAR JAZZ FRIENDS, In honor of our 20th Anniversary, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the Vail Jazz Festival as we celebrate a truly remarkable milestone. From modest beginnings as a two-day festival in 1995, The Vail Jazz Foundation has grown to encompass a summer-long festival with five performance series that touch thousands of listeners every year, three unique educational programs and a winter concert series. This growth is a direct result of the support and enthusiasm of so many fans, friends, volunteers and donors who have generously supported us over the years. Thanks to their dedication, this incredible exploration of jazz is well underway. The breadth of programming continues to expand as we offer new musical styles that illustrate the future of the jazz tradition, while it establishes its presence in the music of the next generation. Featuring over 150 artists this year, the 2014 lineup represents the best of the best in the jazz world – the pinnacle of excellence – to take center stage at five outstanding concert venues. A central focus of Vail Jazz’s mission is education, delivering the sounds and stories of jazz to the next generation of listeners and players. In 2014, Jammin’ Jazz Kids expands to include programs twice weekly during the month of July. This interactive music education program is a wonderful first introduction to jazz for children. Our goal is to leave youngsters curious and eager to take the next step in music. With such a rich collection of performances and activities this summer, I welcome you to explore our festival program. You will find performances that present traditional jazz styles and ones that might challenge or expand your perception of jazz, allowing you to grow your love for this music through experiencing something new and different. Approaching the 2014 lineup in this manner will allow you to connect with jazz on a deeper level, expanding your appreciation for both timeless classics and innovative new works. It also brings a stunning realization of just how far the music has grown over time, incorporating incredible new elements of style, rhythm and influence from around the globe. I am excited to share a remarkable musical experience with you, your family and your friends! TERMS & CONDITIONS For detailed information about events, please continue to the event page, where you will find location, times, parking and access, etc. All tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable. All advance ticket sales are assessed a 4% processing fee.

PERFORMANCE ETIQUETTE Ticket prices increase 4 hours prior to every event. Tickets and passes are held at Will Call, which opens one hour prior to the performance at the performance venue. No tickets are mailed out. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, space permitting.

All performances go on rain or shine. Inclement weather is not cause for a refund unless the performance is cancelled. All artists are subject to cancellation. Tickets will not be refunded if artists change.

Renowned jazz guitarist, singer and musical raconteur John Pizzarelli opens the season for both Bravo! Vail and the Vail Jazz Festival. As part of its ongoing relationship with Bravo! Vail, Vail Jazz is pleased to co-present this collaboration with Jeff Tyzik, conductor, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Featuring classics from the American Songbook, Pizzarelli and the Dallas Symphony will focus on standards by Gershwin, Rodgers, Ellington and Arlen. You’ll likely hear some interesting, hip, lush versions of “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “That Old Black Magic” and “I’ve Got the World on a String”... as well as a few lesser-known gems. But don’t be fooled— consummate entertainer John Pizzarelli has a way of turning a walk down memory lane into a high octane thrill ride, full of musical twists and turns with plenty of laughs along the way. Pizzarelli will be joined by his trio including his brother, Martin, on bass, Konrad Paszkudzki, piano and Kevin Kanner, drums.

Vail Jazz and Bravo! Vail are combining forces again this year to offer two unforgettable evenings of after-symphony fun, incorporating orchestral and jazz performers, plus a third evening of sophisticated cabaret-style jazz. The three Jazz After events will be in the main dining room at Larkspur Restaurant, conveniently located a stroll away from the Ford Amphitheater. The first two Jazz After events feature some of the multi-talented members of world class orchestras--The Dallas Symphony Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra--thrown together with some jazz “ringers,” transforming Larkspur into an exciting, swingin’ jazz club. JUNE 22 THE ORGANIZATION Jeff Jenkins presides at the B3 organ for an energetic afternoon of jazz. Having worked with jazz legends such as Phil Woods, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, John Abercrombie and Clark Terry, Jeff’s playing is informed by a great sense of jazz history and tradition, yet he always strives for a fresh approach that shakes up the traditional organ trio. Jeff is joined by guitarist Dave Corbus, who counts among his influences Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis, Chuck Berry and The Beatles. They are joined by Neil Hemphill on drums.

JULY 6 CHUCK LAMB TRIO A 12-year member of the popular Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Chuck plays straight ahead jazz infused with a distinctive contemporary style and jazz fusion sound--extremely creative, harmonically interesting and rhythmically exciting. Chuck has played with many musical greats including the Woody Herman Orchestra, Bela Fleck, Dave Holland and Larry Coryell. He recently performed at Lincoln Center and was featured with the Chinese National Orchestra in Singapore. This summer Chuck will be joined by his bass-playing brother Rich Lamb and drummer Bob Cohen.

JULY 13 THE HIP RICHIES The Hip Richies are four of Denver’s top musicians who have come together to give market-goers a musical feast. Bill Kopper (guitar) has performed throughout the US, Europe and Central & South America, combining jazz and world music styles--including Cuban, Peruvian and Brazilian--into his masterful playing. Victor Mestas (keys) appears on over 50 albums in Venezuela, where he frequently performs and records in a wide variety of genres and musical styles. Drummer and percussion whiz Raoul Rossiter is also a master of multiple styles; he is well-versed in the Brazilian style, as well as jazz, R&B, funk, Christian, Dixieland and progressive rock. The Hip Richies are rounded out with Mark Simon on bass. Mark has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Grusin, Eddie Harris, Randy Brecker and Regina Carter, and is equally at home contributing a hard-swinging groove or some sweet, soulful resonance.

JULY 20 TONY GULIZIA TRIO Vail’s own “Jazz Ambassador,” Tony Gulizia (keys, vocals) never fails to please. Whatever style he offers up, Tony combines a sure-footed, thoughtful approach to blues, Latin, straight ahead and the American Songbook. Tony is joined by Brian Loftus (drums), whose vast array of influences include Chet Baker, Michael Brecker, Marvin Gaye and the Allman Brothers Band. The trio also includes multi-instrumentalist Gary Regina (sax), a pioneer of the world beat movement which he incorporates into his playing and composing, along with hip-hop, blues, swing, rock, funk and, of course, jazz.

JULY 27 GINGA WITH BATERIA ALEGRIA Ginga is one of the most versatile and exciting bands in Colorado, specializing in playing the traditional music of Brazil. Incorporating a multitude of complementary styles into its music--including samba, forro, bossa nova, MPB, chorinho and Brazilian jazz--Ginga is sure to bring high spirits to the Farmers’ Market. Ginga is Carl Dixon (vocals, percussion), Bill Kopper (guitar, vocals), Francisco Marques (guitar, vocals, percussion, cavaquinho), Greg LaLiberte (flute, sax, percussion, vocals), Victor Mestas (keys) and Raoul Rossiter (drums, percussion, vocals). Ginga is joined by Bateria Alegria, a percussion ensemble consisting of a combination of authentic and traditional Brazilian influences and instruments, including the surdo, caixa, repenique, tamborim, chocalho and agogo.

AUGUST 3 KATHY MORROW & THE DZ Kathy Morrow has been sharing her high energy vocal and keyboard performances with the Vail Valley for two decades, offering a combination of swingin’ jazz tunes, vocal standards, boogie woogie, R&B and Rock ’n ’Roll. She has been performing nationally and internationally for more than 25 years, yet her performances are always fresh and spontaneous, offering a rare vocal range and sensitivity. Brent Gordon will join her on the sax, Ronnie Bland is on the bass and Larry Dutmer on drums.

AUGUST 10 AFTER MIDNIGHT Swinging hard in the tradition of Benny Goodman (the subject of a special tribute at this year’s Vail Jazz Party, see page 51), After Midnight is the hottest sextet in Colorado, performing thousands of concerts around the world at jazz festivals, clubs and concerts. Their instrumentation and arrangements are tight, fun, exciting and sometimes dizzying! Fronted by award-winning clarinetist Roger Campbell, After Midnight includes Rick Weingarten (vibes, vocals), Mike McCullough (guitar, vocals), Jerry Weiss (keys), Herrick “Ced” Forsyth (bass) and Jim Moore (drums).

AUGUST 17 JUSTIN ALLISON QUARTET Justin, a longtime local favorite for his pleasurable vocals and impressive guitar stylings, appeals to the passionate jazz fan as well as casual Market passersby. His repertoire is drawn largely from the American Songbook, from Cole Porter to Kenny Rankin, Jobim to Sting. His instrumentals draw on Ellington, Monk, Brubeck...often inflected with some Brazilian bossa and samba influences. Joining Justin will be Eric Gunnison (keys), Mark Simon (bass) and Allan Finney (drums).

AUGUST 24 LIONEL YOUNG BAND Lionel Young is a high-energy electric violinist with a love for the blues and boogie woogie. Classically trained, his band combines original material with interpretations of blues classics by Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Lionel has performed with Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Woody Herman, Stanley Turrentine and many others. Widely considered among the world’s greatest jazz piano players (and a favorite at the Vail Jazz Party), Monty has recorded more than 70 albums as a leader and has collaborated with such artists as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bobby McFerrin, Natalie Cole and Quincy Jones. His first CD with Harlem-Kingston Express was Grammy®-nominated; his latest release is Harlem-Kingston Express Vol 2, The River Rolls On, which The Wall Street Journal dubbed “An outrageously good time” and which won Best Live Album at the Independent Music Awards. From his perch at the piano, Monty combines a jazz rhythm section with a Jamaican bass and drum groove. After his smashing Vail Jazz debut last year, John returns with his energetic guitar playing and creative arrangements, putting a hipster spin on some classic American Songbook tunes. Always exploring various corners of the jazz and pop landscape -- often combining the two in unique, unexpected ways -- John has a sophisticated, witty style that is both classic and thoroughly modern. An engaging, entertaining performer, John takes his enthusiastic fans on journeys combining brilliant guitar playing and his signature singing style. John is joined by younger brother Martin Pizzarelli (bass), Konrad Paszkudzki (piano) and Kevin Kanner (drums). The latest of John’s 20+ CDs is Double Exposure.

AUGUST 21 | ROBERTA GAMBARINI & THE ERIC GUNNISON TRIO

Roberta’s parents first met at a jazz concert and grew up in Turin, Italy listening to Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holliday. As a young teen, she played the clarinet but realized her own clear alto voice offered more options for expression, and by 17 she was singing and performing in clubs. At 18 she moved to Milan to pursue her career more seriously and was soon performing at various European music festivals throughout the continent. After several years at the New England Conservatory she was a finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and, after a move to NYC, became a cult favorite in the NY jazz world. Her American debut album Easy to Love won a Grammy® nomination. She has performed and toured with Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, Toots Thielemans, Hank Jones, Roy Hargrove and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band. Roberta delights audiences with an instrumental approach to singing, with a warm timbre, incredible technique/improvisational skills and impeccable timing and intonation as demonstrated on her latest CD So In Love. The Eric Gunnison Trio features Eric Gunnison (piano), Mark Simon (bass) and Paul Romaine (drums).

AUGUST 28 | VAIL JAZZ ALL-STARS, VAIL JAZZ ALUMNI QUINTET & VAIL JAZZ PARTY HOUSE BAND Funding for this performance is generously provided by Wing and Maureen Mayer. Vail Square becomes “Jazz Central Station” on the final night of the Thursday night series. With a powerhouse lineup of perennial Vail Jazz favorites John Clayton (bass), Jeff Clayton (alto sax), Bill Cunliffe (piano), Terell Stafford (trumpet), Wycliffe Gordon (trombone) and Lewis Nash (drums), this sextet of world-class jazzers is well-named: the Vail Jazz Party House Band. They will be joined by their protégés, the Vail Jazz All-Stars--this year’s crop of the dozen best and brightest high school jazz players in the nation, in residency at the prestigious Vail Jazz Workshop. Rounding out the talent are five former Workshop students comprising the Vail Jazz Alumni Quintet: Justin Kauflin (piano ‘03), Katie Thiroux (bass ‘05), Alphonso Horne (trumpet ‘04), Grace Kelly (alto sax ‘08) and Bryan Carter (drums ‘07). Beginning its 17th year this fall, it is offered free to more than 1,100 4th and 5th graders in Eagle County schools. The program provides students with an in-depth experience of jazz, its history and its role in society. Led by local jazz artist and educator Tony Gulizia, the interactive format gives students an opportunity to learn about the history of jazz, the greatest jazz musicians and the eras they inhabited. Tony and his fellow musician/educators then break the music down into its essential parts, so the children can understand the foundation of the music itself. The classes involve both demonstration and participation, and students get to play the instruments themselves. “We first play jazz for the kids, and by the third class the kids get a chance to try for themselves. This is when it all comes together; they hear it, they feel it, they get it. You should see their faces light up!” says Gulizia. “It’s magical when the instructors perform original lyrics written by the fifth graders at the final session, an authentic jazz concert.” Over 16,000 students have received Jazz Goes to School instruction since its inception. Jazz Goes to School is supported by grants from Alpine Bank, United Way and Vail Resorts in addition to individual & business donations.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCES Since its inception two decades ago, Vail Jazz has strived to educate as well as entertain...to delightfully enlighten rabid jazz fans and novices alike. Over our first 20 years, we assembled a series of highly popular special shows that feature tributes to specific jazz legends, instruments, styles of playing, eras and even photographers who specialize in jazz themes. This year’s six special performances explore a variety of personalities, instruments and approaches to music--and life--that will delight, educate and reward the musically curious: From the

clear, ripe tone of Benny Goodman’s clarinet, to the full, round sound of Clark Terry’s trumpet...and from an exploration of the possibilities of the piano duo to the amazing range and timbre of Sarah Vaughan’s legendary vocals. Through the presentation of a newly released documentary, Keep On Keepin’ On, we explore the amazing life of one of America’s most beloved and influential musical mentors, jazz trumpet legend Clark Terry. As always, we reconvene our highly popular Gospel Prayer Meetin,’ offering an exploration of one of the main tributaries of jazz.

Trumpeter and flugelhornist Clark Terry is one of the most recorded jazz musicians in history. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, toured with the Newport Jazz All Stars and Jazz at the Philharmonic and was a featured player with the New York Pops Orchestra. He has performed in more than 50 jazz festivals on six continents, has composed more than 200 jazz pieces and has performed for seven U.S. presidents. He was a Jazz Ambassador for the State Department, received the Jazz Master Award from the National Endowment for the Arts and received the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, among hundreds of other awards, medals and honors. But all that pales in comparison to Clark Terry’s true

passion: his dedication to jazz education. Over many decades he has passed his knowledge to younger generations. His classes, courses, clinics and workshops have touched thousands of aspiring musicians over many years, but perhaps his greatest impact has come through the dozens of mentoring relationships he has established and maintained over the course of his life: Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis to name a few. This touching documentary, which recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (winning Best New Documentary Director award), explores the inspiring relationship between Terry and the blind piano prodigy Justin Kauflin (Vail Jazz Workshop alumnus, 2003). Throughout

the film, audiences are moved by Terry’s warmth and candor, both as a musician and as a person, as he shares 93 years’ worth of wisdom and inspiration about music, relationships, tenacity and life. Helping the young Kauflin navigate the early stages of a budding career, Terry’s joy and enthusiasm for mentoring young musicians...even while he’s largely bedridden...is a moving, poignant look at mentorship and inspiration at pivotal moments in the lives of two phenomenal musicians. Clark Terry’s wish is that he be remembered as an advocate of education and assistance in a world where so many refuse to help those who seek it. This touching film is a tribute to the jazz master of that philosophy.

Born in St. Louis in 1920, Clark Terry’s jazz career spans more than 70 years, and he is one of the most recorded musicians in jazz history (more than 900 recordings). He began his professional career in his early 20s, playing in local clubs in the St. Louis area before joining a Navy band during World War II. As part of the historic “Great Lakes Experience,” Terry was one of hundreds of black Navy musicians stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center from 1942-45, including Gerald Wilson, Major Holley, Al Gray, Donald White and others, who explored new musical directions, and developed a profound respect for one another as musicians. He was soon playing with the bands of Charlie Barnet, Charlie Ventura and Eddie Vinson and by 1948 he was playing in the Count Basie Band. Within three years he was asked to join Duke

Ellington’s orchestra where he was a featured soloist for eight years. In 1959, he toured in the “Free and Easy” production with musical director Quincy Jones. Terry’s recognition soared when he accepted an offer from NBC as staff musician--the first black artist in this role, in 1960. He remained with NBC for 12 years as one of the spotlighted musicians in the Tonight Show Band, first with Skitch Henderson and then with Doc Severinsen. Terry later played with musicians such as trombonist J.J. Johnson and pianist Oscar Peterson, with whom he regularly toured into the 1980s. Widely hailed for a combination of great technical virtuosity, swinging lyricism and impeccable taste, Terry is considered a jazz storyteller, weaving musical tales with his trumpet and flugelhorn performances. Blending the

St. Louis style with more mellow contemporary tones, his unique sound has influenced several generations of players. Yet, despite his proficiency, popularity and productivity, Terry’s greatest legacy will perhaps also be as an educator, mentor and influence on the careers...and lives...of other celebrated and aspiring musicians. While Terry credits Louis Armstrong as his own mentor, he in turn has influenced the careers (as model and mentor) of countless jazz musicians over many decades, including Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. An icon of jazz education, Terry considers this his greatest passion and has received 15 honorary doctorates, three adjunct professorships and numerous awards from high schools, junior high and elementary schools where he has inspired and shared his knowledge of jazz well into his 90s.

Nowhere in jazz is there more of a “meeting of the minds” than in the realm of the jazz piano duo. Four hands exploring 176 keys with potentially 20 simultaneous tones--the combinations and permutations are mind-boggling... yet the result is often magical. The concept of two players at one piano was popularized by Mozart and his sister in the late 1700s, and the playing of duets (two performers at one piano) became fairly common thereafter. But Mozart kicked it up a notch by pioneering compositions for two players at two pianos. And given Mozart’s extraordinary improvisation skills and sparse skeletal writing, it can be assumed that those early two-piano performances were a sort of early precursor to today’s jazz piano duos, where improvisation runs rampant. Among the more notable jazz piano duos were Oscar Peterson/Count Basie, Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock, George Shearing/ Hank Jones, Kenny Barron/Barry Harris and Hank Jones/Tommy Flanagan. But most of these artists came together at a point in time, either for a recording or special performance, rather than as a touring or regularly performing duo. To capture one of these rare excursions in a live performance is a rare treat.

Marian McPartland’s popular “Piano Jazz” program on NPR often featured 2-piano duos with some of the greatest names in jazz as she and her guests sat at separate pianos, reminiscing, ad-libbing and playing duos. McPartland-based piano duos included Billy Taylor, Bill Evans, Jay McShann, Cedar Walton, Gene Harris, Henry Mancini, Bill Cunliffe and Benny Green. Fortunately, many of those amazing performances are available today on CDs. Among the more famous piano duo recordings were several albums recorded by jazz icon Bill Evans who recorded himself, then recorded his own accompaniment to those same tracks, effectively creating his own piano duo. Those albums, Conversations with Myself, Further Conversations, and New Conversations became instant classics, the earliest of which won Evans his first of 7 Grammy® Awards. Presented here in various combinations will be Bill Cunliffe, Tamir Hendelman, Justin Kauflin and Eric Reed (see individual bios), each with a unique style and approach to color, harmony and rhythm. Expect some amazing performances as each inspires the other to explore the full possibilities of complementary (and perhaps dueling!) pianos.

Sarah Vaughan was born in Newark, NJ in 1924, daughter to a carpenter and a laundress, both of whom had musical inclinations. Sarah began piano lessons at age 7 and sang in the church choir, occasionally playing piano for rehearsals and services. Discovering a love for popular music on records and radio, she frequently heard local and touring bands that played in Newark and, later (though still underage), she ventured into the city’s nightclubs to listen and perform as a pianist and singer. Although she attended Newark Arts High School, she dropped out to concentrate on musical endeavors. At 18, Vaughan was encouraged by a friend to enter NYC’s Apollo Theater Amateur Night contest, where she sang “Body and Soul,” winning $10 and a week’s engagement at the Apollo, opening for Ella Fitzgerald. Within a year, she was hired by Earl “Fatha” Hines as his singer and toured nationally with his band, which included Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Park-

er and the trombonist Bennie Green. Eckstine left the band and offered Vaughan the opportunity to join him to further develop her musicianship with such legendary jazz figures as Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Art Blakey, Lucky Thompson, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon and others. By 21, Vaughan began her solo career, freelancing in clubs and theaters in NYC and recording under her own name. Her early recordings captured the attention of jazz aficionados and critics, and by 23 she began appearing on both jazz and pop charts, winning Esquire Magazine’s New Star Award and substantial praise and recognition from DownBeat Magazine and others. Recording contracts and hits followed, first with Columbia Records, then Mercury, accompanied by non-stop touring with a Who’s Who of famous jazz artists. Through the ‘60s, Vaughan continued to record the occasional pop hit but

the shrinking jazz audience resulted in diminishing output and, for some periods, a lack of recording contracts. By the mid ‘70s, Vaughan’s focus had shifted to orchestral jazz, a long-time interest of hers, and she toured actively with symphony orchestras around the country, reviving interest in her performances. A series of albums in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s generated new audiences for Vaughan and she remained very active as a performer, receiving many awards for her contributions to American music as an elder stateswoman of jazz. She died in 1990 at the age of 66, shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Known as “Sassy” and “The Divine One” (and sometimes “Salty”--a reference to her colorful, sailor-like language!), Vaughan continues to influence generations of singers. She is remembered for her rich voice, unusually wide range and for the inventiveness and virtuosity of her improvisations. WWW.VAILJAZZ.ORG 49

NIKI HARIS' GOSPEL PRAYER MEETIN' DATE SUNDAY, AUG. 31 TIME 9:00 AM VENUE JAZZ TENT AT VAIL SQUARE Last year’s standing-room-only crowd says it all: the Gospel Prayer Meetin’ led by the dynamic and energetic Niki Haris with the Mile Hi Gospel Ensemble, is the place to be on Sunday morning. It’s no less than a hand clappin’, singin’, spirit liftin’ musical melting pot--an inspiring tribute to the contribution that gospel music has made in shaping jazz. Gospel is a unique American style of music that evolved initially from religious songs that trace their roots to field hollers and work songs (call and response). Repeated by

slaves through generations, these spirituals also absorbed some of the flavor of the religions of their masters. Much of the basis of this hopeful music was the promise of salvation and the eventual alleviation of suffering: The music was steeped in deep emotion and underlying pain. KEN PEPLOWSKI'S MULTI-MEDIA TRIBUTE TO BENNY GOODMAN DATE

Few musicians so dominated their era as did clarinetist, composer and bandleader Benny Goodman. A towering jazz icon from the mid-1930s through the mid-1940s, Goodman’s signature sound...and highly energetic big band performances...dominated the direction of American jazz for nearly a decade and influenced the directions of jazz for decades to come. Born in Chicago in 1909, one of 12 children in the family of an immigrant tailor, he borrowed a clarinet from his local synagogue where he commenced lessons at age 10. His teenage musician friends were fascinated by the jazz flowing through Chicago in the ‘20s and the young Goodman was influenced early on by Leon Rappolo, clarinetist in the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, even adopting Rappolo’s leaning-back style of playing. A few years later, Goodman was summoned by Rappolo’s drummer Ben Pollack to join his new band in California, which included Glenn Miller, Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland. After the band moved to NYC, Goodman began freelancing on radio and records and was soon front-

ing a recording group as Benny Goodman and His Orchestra, subsequently landing a 26-week gig at a NYC club and a weekly 3-hour radio program. For his first broadcast, Goodman purchased Edgar Sampson’s arrangement (for $37.50) of “Stompin’ at the Savoy” which became a Goodman classic. Swing fever was on the rise and Goodman quickly became known as “The King of Swing” (a moniker bestowed by Gene Krupa). By the mid ‘30s Goodman began cherry-picking top-tier jazz artists to join his entourage, including Krupa, Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton. Until then, bands were either black or white. Goodman was the first prominent leader to break the color barrier; in fact, Goodman was the first white bandleader to adopt and popularize an unapologetic jazz style. Goodman didn’t limit himself to the jazz milieu. He was also the first famous jazz musician to achieve success performing classical repertory, appearing with all the leading American orchestras performing jazz and classical pieces with equal facility...and to equally enthusi-

astic audiences. His 1938 performance at Carnegie Hall was the first given by a jazz orchestra and had a huge impact on the legitimization of jazz among “serious” music lovers. Goodman continued to tour occasionally in the late 1940s and ‘50s, often under State Department sponsorship. In the ‘60s he expanded his role as jazz ambassador with tours of South America, the USSR and Japan. Goodman, who died in 1986 at the age of 77, gave the clarinet a newly assertive leadership role in the jazz ensemble, shaping small-band jazz style for decades. He played on more than 5,000 recordings and sold well over 100 million records. His playing and band leading were characterized by flawless performances and very high standards of excellence and tempo. With a graceful, flowing melody line, his spontaneous inventions were executed with complete assurance, and his swinging danceable rhythms cultivated a broad popular audience and represent an important element in American popular culture.

VAIL JAZZ WORKSHOP Now in its 19th year, the Vail Jazz Workshop has become legendary among North America’s most promising young jazz musicians. Conducted in conjunction with the annual Vail Jazz Party, the Workshop is one of the longest-running, most successful programs of its type, enabling student musicians to study and be coached in an environment that fosters intense interaction with instructors and peers. By anecdote, reputation and wordof-mouth--from students and professionals alike--the 12 annual Workshop slots are among music’s most coveted scholarships for precollege musicians. Chris, born in Torrance and now living in Hermosa Beach, CA, describes his household as rich in Latin and Jewish culture; he was encouraged to explore those and other musical avenues. His older brother, a bass player, exposed him to Monk, Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson, and Chris soon found himself trying to transcribe the music of those legends. He has performed at Disney Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and many top L.A.-area venues where he has been part of a big band,

Growing up in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Morgan was given his first pair of drumsticks at the age of six months... followed shortly thereafter by a drum set. By six, Morgan had his first saxophone and his instrumental repertoire now includes alto, tenor, baritone, sopranino and soprano saxes, bass clarinet, flute, violin, oboe, bass and piano. Having grown up in a musical household, Morgan had the good fortune of being exposed to jazz from the Marsalis family, Donald Harrison and Vail Jazz Workshop alumnus (2001) Christian Scott, among many others. He names John Coltrane, Michael Brecker and Joe Henderson as major influences, and has shared the stage and/or opened

Hailing from Miramar, FL, Anthony started playing trumpet in the 6th grade and within a few years was playing in both all-county and all-state jazz bands, various jazz and concert bands and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. He has received the Louis Armstrong Award, John Philip Sousa Award, outstanding trumpet award at the Essentially Ellington Competition, a Young Art Merit Award and the Gold Coast Jazz Society Scholarship. Mesmerized by Freddie Hubbard’s playing on “Cantaloupe Island,” Anthony focused on jazz and

appeared in various combos and groups, including his own trio and in a quintet fronted by Vail Jazz Workshop alumnus (2013) Adrian Cota, with whom he opened for Arturo Sandoval. His awards include his work for ensemble, as a soloist and for composition. Among his favorite pianists and influences are Brad Mehldau, Aaron Parks and Keith Jarrett. Chris is excited to work with the “incredible Workshop faculty” and to hone his accompaniment and overall performance skills.

His goals for the Vail Jazz Workshop include becoming better at providing ideas for arranging and composing music.

Coming to music by way of classical piano, Kevin tried a variety of other instruments--including euphonium, tenor sax and trumpet--before migrating to the trombone, and jazz. A resident of Towaco, NJ, Kevin attends Newark Academy. As a member of the Jazz House Big Band, he placed second in the nation at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition, and was selected as Outstanding Soloist at the recent National Mingus Competition, affording him the opportunity to sit in with the Grammy®-winning Mingus Big Band. He is currently lead trombonist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis. Kevin was recently

Nick was born in Los Angeles and currently attends the L.A. County High School for the Arts where he is an active participant in a variety of bands, combos and orchestras. His associations include National Youth Orchestra of the USA, Honor Jazz Band of America, Young Musicians Foundation Chamber Brass Trio, Bill Green Mentorship Program, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. Nick lists J.J. Johnson, Mike

selected to tour Japan and California with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Although he likes to listen to a wide variety of jazz styles, he gravitates to bebop, hard bop, and big band styles. His favorite players include Curtis Fuller for his warm tone and clean articulation, J.J. Johnson for his ability to tell a story musically, and Michael Dease for his fast, complex lines. Kevin participates in a number of community service activities such as tutoring underprivileged children and playing benefit concerts. His participation in the Vail Jazz Workshop aims to expand his improvisational skills and improve his technical facility on the trombone.

Dease and Elliot Mason as principal influences on the trombone; he considers himself to be a post-bop jazz player with a strong preference for live jazz listening. Nick has volunteered for the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition and has played outreach concerts for hunger programs and environmental clean-ups. Nick’s goals for the Workshop include becoming a better soloist and more seasoned improviser.

CHRISTIAN McGHEE Age

Born in St. Louis and now living in Florissant, MO, Christian has played drums since he was two, taking lessons since he was five. He has played with a large variety of music groups including ensembles led by various instructors, middle and high school bands, various church/gospel bands, and several other jazz bands. He was recognized as Outstanding Soloist in the Young Lion of Jazz Competition, Outstanding Drum Solo at the Truman State University Jazz Festival, was cited in the #1 Jazz Combo Group at North Illinois University, and received scholarships from both UMSL

Summer Jazz and Webster University Summer jazz programs. “X-Man,” as Christian is sometimes known (middle names Xavier McClendon), cites Herlin Riley, “Philly” Joe Jones and Art Blakey as his primary influences on the drums. Christian aims to become a jazz educator in a university setting and hopes to travel widely as a jazz musician. He believes the Vail Jazz Workshop will help him improve as a jazz musician and learn more about the drummer’s role in energizing a band. He also hopes to learn how to be a better music educator by observing and learning from the Workshop’s stellar faculty.

KANOA MENDENHALL Age

Kanoa, born in Yokohama, Japan, was raised in the Monterey area and currently resides in Novato, CA. She grew up in a “jazz household” and thinks she has probably been listening to jazz since before she was born! She studied classical cello starting around ten, switching to classical bass after about four years, gradually integrating jazz bass lessons into the mix. Kanoa also plays the shamisen (3-stringed Japanese instrument), sings in jazz choir and gives free music lessons in her local schools and summer camps on trombone, cello and bass. She has played with a wide variety of middle and high school jazz bands, combos,

all-star groups, the Jazz Band of America, the Grammy® Jazz Session Combo and she was recently a YoungArts National Finalist. Kanoa has also won many Outstanding Soloist awards (including Mingus and Next Generation Jazz festivals) and received scholarships to Juilliard and Stanford Jazz Summer Workshops. She also plays for Berkeley-based JazzGirls, an advocacy group for women in jazz. Her favorite bass influences are Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown and Ron Carter. Kanoa hopes the Vail Jazz Workshop will expand her thinking about bass lines and allow her to work on her “time feel” and placement of quarter notes.

CHRIS PALMER Age

An L.A. native, Chris migrated from soccer to rock guitar at the age of nine, but directed himself into jazz after witnessing his first jazz concert featuring Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette, Esperanza Spalding and Terence Blanchard. When an opportunity arose to play in his school’s jazz combo, Chris switched to the bass for its warm, rich tone and crucial function in the ensemble setting. While studying classical and jazz bass in middle school, he formed his own quartet, playing frequently at local restaurants and jazz clubs. Since entering high school, Chris has played with a variety

of orchestras, jazz bands and combos. Chris’ early passion for guitar led him to guitarist Joe Pass, who led him to pianist Oscar Peterson, who led him to Ray Brown, his favorite bass player. He also names Christian McBride and Ron Carter as major influences. Chris plays for various community and seniors groups, and in the coming year plans to work with Music & Memory, helping to restore memory in the elderly through targeted music programming. His goals in the Workshop include more melodic improvisation, improved playing in odd meters and networking with the other top student jazzers in the country.

JAMES ROBERTSON Age

Born, raised and homeschooled in Atlanta, GA, James is the multi-instrumentalist son of professional jazz musicians. He has played professionally with his father’s trio in Atlanta since he was 11 and has also played with Nicholas Payton, Freddy Cole and others. He has attended the Juilliard Summer Jazz Camp since he was nine, and has received instruction at Georgia State for jazz big band for three years. James has been a member of the high school wind symphony and several high school big bands, and for several years has been a featured artist at the Atlanta Jazz Festival. He has played at The Kennedy Center, Benny Golson Jazz Festival and opened for Vail Jazz

Workshop alumnus (1997) Robert Glasper. His playing is most influenced by Jackie McLean, John Coltrane and Kenny Garrett; James also loves listening to Count Basie, Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley. He enjoys playing for senior audiences and admits to “mining” them for stories about seeing Miles, Shorter and other jazz greats. James performs at fundraisers for radio stations and hopes to organize jazz concerts for public school students in the future. He looks forward to the Vail Jazz Workshop to unify his understanding of theory and chord structures, and to become more adept at improvisation.

JARED SILVERSTEIN Age

A native “Jersey boy,” Jared lives in Hillsborough, where he started playing drums at four, beginning lessons at five. At 10, under the influence of his drummer and percussionist instructor, he started studying jazz and Cuban music, delving into jazz more intensively in subsequent years. He has played with the Jazz House Kids Big Band, the NJ Senior Region Jazz Band, the New Jersey Ballet, the Brick City Jazz Orchestra, at various jazz venues with his own quartet and he has performed at Carnegie Hall. Jared particularly enjoys studying and playing big band music citing the Mel Lewis and Count

Basie bands; he also favors straight-ahead trios such as Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Tommy Flanagan and Benny Green. His favorite drummers include Elvin Jones, Kenny Washington, Dafnis Prieto and Brian Blade. Jared plays local benefit concerts, volunteers to help fight ALS, and helps facilitate drum circles for children attending special needs camps. While at the Vail Jazz Workshop, Jared looks forward to working closely with instructor Lewis Nash to improve the fluidity of his improvisational ideas and to work on his ability to support soloists.

ISAIAH THOMPSON Age

From West Orange, NJ, Isaiah began playing classical piano when he was five, eventually branching out to R&B and pop. After discovering how much fun it was to play jazz, he began to focus on private jazz studies and was soon playing with the Jazz House Kids Messengers Ensemble, the Jazz House Kids Big Band and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra. Isaiah is a 3-time winner for Outstanding Achievement from the Music Educators Association, Outstanding Soloist at both the Essentially Ellington and Mingus competitions, and jazz piano winner of YoungArts. Isaiah is a summer volunteer at the local public high school where he helps younger kids in band

and jazz band, sometimes playing baritone sax in support of their efforts. He is also Vice President of Community Service for a senior teen group that works in soup kitchens and collects/distributes food from markets and restaurants to shelters and food banks. An avid student of classic jazz (Hancock, Silver, Blakey, Hubbard, Davis, Coltrane, etc.), Isaiah lately has gravitated to Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. In fact, he names Peterson, Monty Alexander and Bud Powell as his three favorite jazz pianists. Isaiah anticipates that the Vail Jazz Workshop will be a great learning experience given the various backgrounds of the instructors and students, all contributing diverse musical perspectives.

MICHAEL WERNER Age

A native of Evanston, IL, Michael picked up a trumpet at six and focused on classical playing, adding jazz to his repertoire six years later. He has played with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and with a variety of other award-winning big bands and combos at various venues and competitions. Michael has also toured France and the Netherlands with Midwest Young Artists playing in a brass ensemble, symphony orchestra, big band and combo configurations. He was awarded Outstanding Soloist at the Purdue Jazz Festival, Evanston Jazz Festival, and New Trier Jazz Festival. He won first prize in the

Billy Strayhorn Composition Competition held by the Music Institute of Chicago, where he also won a merit scholarship. Michael is also involved with outreach community service for the Music Institute of Chicago. He enjoys playing many styles of jazz and lately has gravitated to hard bop and modern playing styles. Michael especially likes the playing of Woody Shaw, Clifford Brown and Vail Jazz Workshop alumnus (2000) Ambrose Akinmusire. He looks to the Vail Jazz Workshop for learning a lot of new tunes, going beyond bebop, and absorbing everything he can from the Workshop’s firststring students and instructors.

VAIL JAZZ PARTY ARTISTS ERNIE ADAMS One of the most popular and highly regarded musicians in Chicago, percussionist, drummer, composer, producer and educator Ernie Adams is an experienced, high profile all-styles drummer, who has performed and recorded with many of the world’s great musicians. Known for perfect timing, his solid groove and brilliant technique, Ernie combines his percussion mastery with great musical taste and a wonderful personality. Playing professionally since age 15, Ernie studied jazz at North Texas State University and graduated as a jazz major from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. He has also been a Jazz Mentor at Ravinia since 1995, and has been tutoring young drummers and percussionists in the Chicago public schools for more than 15 years, as well as privately. He has performed, recorded and toured with Ramsey Lewis, Al Di Meola, Joe Williams, Billy Dickens, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Cole, Dianne Reeves, Stanley Turrentine, Ahmad Jamal, Richie Cole, James Moody, Joe Zawinul, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. Ernie has played on more than 100 recordings and his performance and production credits include movie soundtracks and radio/TV jingles.

AKIKO Osaka-born Akiko began playing the organ at age 3 and launched her career in jazz immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living in Osaka, she had the opportunity to play with numerous jazz legends such as Roy Hargrove, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Grady Tate, whom she credits with influencing her decision to become a professional musician. Tate performed on her Japanese debut album and convinced her to move to the US. Now a mainstay of the NY jazz scene for more than a decade, she was quick to be embraced by fellow jazzers as one of the top organ players in the city. She is a regular and crowd favorite at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blue Note, Birdland, Green Mill in Chicago and Yoshi’s in Oakland. The DownBeat Critics Poll placed her in the Rising Star category and she has regularly appeared in the DownBeat polls since then. In the past two years, she has

Jamaica-born Monty Alexander began classical piano lessons at age 6, and by 14 was playing in local clubs and on recording sessions. At 17 he moved with his family to Miami and within a year was playing at the famous NYC jazz club, Jilly’s, where he performed with Frank Sinatra and became friends with bassist Ray Brown and vibist Milt Jackson. He recorded his first album by the age of 20. Influenced by Nat Cole, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly and Ahmad Jamal, Monty has maintained a strong sound and feel of the Caribbean throughout his career and in fact has released several reggae albums featuring Jamaican musicians exclusively. He rose to jazz prominence--in the US and Europe-- in the mid’70’s when he formed a group consisting of John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums, recording numerous albums with that trio. With more than 70 albums as a leader, Monty maintains an active touring schedule and was awarded the title Commander in the Order of Distinction for outstanding service to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador. His latest CDs include HarlemKingston Express 2 and Uplift 2.

ANNE HAMPTON CALLAWAY A favorite of Vail Jazz audiences through the years, NYC-based Ann Hampton Callaway is a multi-platinum-selling singer, pianist, composer, lyricist and arranger and is one of the leading champions of the Great American Songbook. A born entertainer, Ann’s unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television and in film. Her songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand’s CDs. Her live performances showcase her warmth, spontaneous wit and passionate delivery of standards, jazz classics and originals. BRYAN CARTER Bryan Carter first took a seat at a drumset at the age of 3, starting lessons by the time he was 6. Before he got to high school, he had already studied with legendary drummers Louie Bellson, Harold Jones and Ed Thigpen; by the time he was in high school in Dekalb County, Illinois he was regularly winning musicianship awards. A veteran of the highly regarded Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony and the Grammy® Jazz Ensemble, he attended The Juilliard School as a jazz studies major, studying with Carl Allen and Kenny Washington, there expanding his horizons into composition and orchestration. His eclectic influences range from Ellington and Monk, to Puccini and Stravinsky, to Wonder and Jackson. Based in NYC, Bryan has played and/or recorded with Clark Terry, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Watson, Terell Stafford, Mulgrew Miller, Michael Feinstein and Kurt Elling, having performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Staples Center, Chicago Symphony Center and clubs, festivals and concert halls around the world. Despite his youth (Bryan is 24), he has already distinguished himself as a sought-after educator, having conducted hundreds of clinics, master classes and workshops around the world. He currently serves as a teaching artist for the Jazz for Young People program at Lincoln Center. His most recent CD is Enchantment featuring Bryan’s own compositions. JEFF CLAYTON Born in Los Angeles, alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton cites the “emotional majesty” of his childhood Baptist church as a major musical inspiration. Jeff took a break from studying oboe at California State University Northridge to tour with Stevie Wonder. He credits saxophonists Johnny Hodges and Cannonball Adderley as his most significant jazz influences, along with trumpeter Thad Jones and bassist Ray Brown. He co-leads the Grammy®nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with brother John and drummer Jeff Hamilton and is also co-leader of the Clayton Brothers Quintet. Los Angeles native John Clayton began seriously studying the bass at age 16 with Ray Brown. At 19, the Grammy® winner and eight-time Grammy® nominee became the bassist for Henry Mancini’s television series “The Mancini Generation.” After receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in double bass in 1975 from the University of Indiana, John toured with Monty Alexander and Count Basie & His Orchestra. He moved to Amsterdam and was principal bassist in the Amsterdam Philharmonic for five years. John’s work as a composer and arranger has been guided by, among others, Robert Farnon, Count Basie, Johnny Mandel, Mancini, Marty Paich and Frank Foster. He has written and arranged music for Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater (including her Grammy®-winning Dear Ella), Natalie Cole, Regina Carter, Milt Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, George Benson, Paul McCartney and Dr. John. He is co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. He is president of the International Bassist Association and artistic director of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and Centrum Jazz Workshop. John is Director of Education and a Board member of the Vail Jazz Foundation and Director of the Vail Jazz Workshop for the past 19 years. BILL CUNLIFFE Bill Cunliffe began his career as pianist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson and James Moody. He has since established himself as a solo artist and bandleader, with more than a dozen albums under his name.

Bill currently plays with his trio, his big band and his Latin band, Imaginación, and performs in the US and around the world as a leader and sideman. Bill has received four Grammy® nominations and two Emmy® nominations. He was awarded a Grammy® for Best Instrumental Arrangement for “West Side Story Medley,” on the album Resonance Big Band Plays Tribute to Oscar Peterson (Resonance Records). Born in Andover, MA, Bill earned a Master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. Bill also composes classical music, having written and recorded many compositions including a three-movement Romantic Fantasy for piano and orchestra and Viva Mexico for orchestra. He performs his own distinctive arrangement of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with orchestras and plays with his group, Trimotif. Bill is a winner of the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and is a jazz studies professor at Cal State Fullerton. This is Bill’s 19th year teaching at the Vail Jazz Workshop. ALLAN FINNEY The son of a big band drummer, Allan Finney hails from Stoke-on-Trent, England. He first started playing trombone, but after seeing a performance by Buddy Rich when he was 12, Allan soon switched to drums and guitar, continuing while he attended Trentham High School. By 19, he was playing drums professionally in nightclubs, ballrooms and resort hotels all over the UK. After settling in Madison, WI, Allan graduated from the University of Wisconsin, continuing to play in local bands before moving to Vail in 1995. He recently completed a sold-out tour of Colorado with organist Tony Monaco, and is in great demand for his creative and sensitive drumming for which he cites a wide variety of early influences, ranging from Ringo to Kenny Clarke, Joe Morello and Art Blakey. Allan is also noted for his guitar work, crediting Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Larry Carlton among other influences. Allan has shared the stage with many jazz and pop luminaries such as Ray Charles, Al Green, Natalie Cole, Chuck Mangione, Russell Malone, Bill Cunliffe, Curtis Stigers, John Clayton, Cyrille Aimée, Diego Figueiredo, Ken Peplowski, Terell Stafford, Frank Vignola, Plas Johnson and Johnny O’Neil.

MATTHEW FRIES Matthew Fries, a native of Selinsgrove, PA, has played piano all his life...with a few years of trumpet and vocal work thrown in for good measure. The son of a classical singer and a piano professor, Matthew earned a Bachelor’s from Ithaca College and a

Master’s from The University of Tennessee, where he taught undergraduate classes and studied with jazz piano great Donald Brown. Praised with equal enthusiasm for his solo work, his energetic trio work and his crisp, sensitive accompaniment treatments, Matthew counts Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea among his major influences. His creative writing and fresh arranging have won wide praise in the jazz press for his work with the collaborative trio Tri-Fi. Matthew is based in NYC and can be heard regularly at various venues there, including The Rose Club at the Plaza Hotel and Knickerbocker. He tours internationally as a regular member of singer Curtis Stigers’ popular band, with whom he performed with the Dallas Symphony in 2012 for the Bravo! Vail festival. Born in Waynesboro, Georgia, Wycliffe Gordon found the trombone at age 12 and today is an 8-time winner of the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Trombonist of the Year. He was also awarded DownBeat Magazine’s Critics’ Choice Award for Best Trombone in 2012 and 2013. In addition to his always-memorable solo performances, he leads the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, has been a featured guest artist on Billy Taylor’s “Jazz at The Kennedy Center” series and is a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet. His performance experience includes work with Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Joe Henderson, Eric Reed, Randy Sandke and Branford Marsalis. He has released 17 solo and eight co-leader CDs. Selections from his CD We 2 with Eric Reed will be performed in their duo appearance at the Vail Jazz Party. Television appearances include the Grammy® Awards, the PBS documentary “Swingin’ with the Duke,” and two “Live from Lincoln Center” broadcasts. A committed music educator, Wycliffe is a founding faculty member of the Jazz Studies Program at The Juilliard School. He was the youngest member of the U.S. Statesmen of Jazz and a musical ambassador for the U.S. State Department. This is Wycliffe’s third year as an instructor at the Vail Jazz Workshop. Recent albums include his tribute to Louis Armstrong Hello Pops!, The Intimate Ellington and Cone and T-Staff, his recent quintet recording featuring trumpeter Terell Stafford.

JEFF HAMILTON Born in Indiana, Jeff Hamilton listened to big band records and began playing drums to Oscar Peterson’s music at age 8. Today he is featured WWW.VAILJAZZ.ORG 69

with some of the top names in jazz and pop on more than 200 recordings, 22 of which received Grammy® nominations, with 11 of those (including a recent recording with Paul McCartney) garnering Grammy® awards. He also performs and records frequently with his own trio and as co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. His own albums include the recently released Great American Songs: Through the Years, and earlier efforts Symbiosis and Red Sparkle. Additionally, he teaches, arranges and composes. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, “Philly” Joe Jones and Shelly Manne were important influences. Early engagements included the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Lionel Hampton’s Band before joining the Monty Alexander Trio in 1975 with bassist John Clayton. From 1983 to 1987 he performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie & His Orchestra and Rosemary Clooney. Prior to forming his own trio in 1995, Jeff played with the Ray Brown Trio. The Los Angeles Jazz Society named Jeff and his musical partner John Clayton 2006 Musicians of the Year, and he was recently voted #1 Jazz Drummer in Modern Drummer Magazine’s reader’s poll. He has toured with Diana Krall and appeared in Natalie Cole’s “Great Performances” special on PBS. Jeff is part owner of Crescent Cymbals.

KAREN HAMMACK A native Californian and daughter of a studio pianist and arranger, Karen Hammack discovered blues piano at age 14, which led her into the worlds of jazz, gospel, funk, soul, rock, pop and singing/songwriting. She has toured all over the world as musical director for pop legend Melissa Manchester, jazz and gospel great Niki Haris and currently tours with Grammy®nominated world music artist Perla Batalla. Thanks to her mastery of many different styles Karen has performed and recorded with Michael McDonald, Bill Frisell, Jackson Browne, Tierney Sutton, Gretchen Parlato, Kate McGarry, Eric Marienthal, Vinnie Colaiuta, Joe LaBarbera and Julie Christensen, among others. Karen, now based in LA, is busy as a performer, composer, teacher, arranger and recording artist. She has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe and Asia. Karen has been recognized for her true and sincere singing and writing. Her diverse musical influences have coalesced into a highly intimate, personal style evident on her latest recording My Beating Heart, featuring 14 pieces both written and performed by Karen. Karen is currently at work on a new CD.

She is also a strong supporter for the Music in the Classroom program and RAAD, Rockers Against Drunk Driving. She diligently lends her time in serving and is an annual participant in the Season for Non Violence. Thanks to the complaining of a downstairs neighbor, John Hart switched from drums to bass in his teens. Born in Philadelphia, John grew up listening to Earth, Wind & Fire and Chuck Rainey, and realized early on that music was “it.” He applied his distinctive, high-energy style, which came to be known as “Big Pocket,” in his work with a number of Philly-based bands such as Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, The Delfonics and Major Harris. In the ‘80s John worked and toured with a variety of groups, landing a touring gig with legendary guitarist Pat Martino. Over subsequent decades John worked with many major artists including Melba Moore, Billy Paul, Phyllis Hyman, Marion Meadows, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Lyle, Angela Bofill and Lonnie Liston-Smith. In the ‘90s he made TV appearances with many LAbased house bands on nighttime and variety-type shows, and played with Larry Coryell, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson, Ronnie Laws and many others. Now one of the premier bass players on the contemporary music scene, John also teaches improvisational jazz, consults on music software and produces and writes for other artists.

Beginning his keyboard studies at age 6 in Tel Aviv, Tamir Hendelman moved to the U.S. at the age of 12 and within two years had won Yamaha’s national keyboard competition, leading to performances in Japan and the Kennedy Center. Tamir then studied at the Tanglewood Institute and received a Bachelor of Music Composition degree from Eastman School of Music in 1993. He was named the youngest musical director for the Lovewell Institute, a national arts education non-profit organization. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1996, Tamir has been steadily engaged as a pianist and arranger having recorded and toured with musical greats such as Barbra Streisand, Natalie

Jack Wilkins and Buddy Defranco. Since moving to NYC in 1980, Tim has worked with many jazz greats including Hank Jones, Ernestine Anderson, Richie Cole, Wynton Marsalis, The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Mark Murphy, Joe Williams, Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid and Alan Farnham, and plays frequently with The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He is an active jazz educator and conducts clinics, classes and seminars and teaches jazz ensembles and jazz drumming at New Jersey City University. His latest CD as a leader is The Head of the Circle.

ALPHONSO HORNE A native of Jacksonville, FL, Alphonso Horne began playing trumpet at age 12 and has since continued to study classical and jazz trumpet with equal fervor. No wonder that his idol is Wynton Marsalis, with whom he shared the stage at a session of Essentially Ellington, winning Outstanding Soloist at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s competition. Bearing an unmistakable Marsalis influence, Alphonso has won numerous awards for both his jazz and classical playing at festivals and orchestral competitions, naming Miles Davis, Clifford Brown and Roy Hargrove as major influences...while also citing a love for Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Alphonso received double degrees in jazz performance and trumpet performance at Florida State University and garnered first place in the jazz category at the National Trumpet Competition. Now 26, Alphonso is currently pursuing his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School where he studies with jazz trumpet legend Eddie Henderson. He has performed with Marcus Roberts, Delfeayo Marsalis, Wes Anderson and Dianne Reeves, and recently subbed for Wynton Marsalis in the Jazz at Lincoln Center John Coltrane Festival. Alphonso attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2004, studying with trumpet phenom Terell Stafford and the program’s other noteworthy instructors.

TIM HORNER Tim Horner began playing the drums at the age of 10, having grown up in a musical household. By the fourth grade he was singing in a choir, playing violin, viola and drums in school music settings. After attending numerous summer music camps and programs, he entered Berklee College of Music with the intention of pursuing a jazz drumming career. His first major professional work was with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, which he joined in 1978. After a year on the road, Tim returned to Boston finishing his Bachelor’s in Performance at Berklee while also leading his own bands and recording/performing with artists including Miroslav Vitous, John Scofield,

JUSTIN KAUFLIN Virginia Beach native Justin Kauflin’s unusual musical talent, recognized at age 2, was nurtured with classical training on the violin and piano. From age 6 he began performing in concerts, home visits and weddings, eventually becoming concertmaster for several orchestras. Blind since 11, Justin switched to jazz piano in high school and began performing jazz professionally by age 15. Kauflin received a Presidential Scholarship at William Paterson University where he was mentored by trumpeter Clark Terry, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Music/Jazz Performance. Justin has performed with a wide range of musicians, including his own trio, in venues such as Blue Note, Village Vanguard, Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Jazz Standard, Blues Alley and many others. At 23, Justin was leader, producer and composer on his first CD as a leader Introducing Justin Kauflin. Justin attended the Vail Jazz Workshop in 2003 where he studied piano with jazz piano great Bill Cunliffe and the program’s other noteworthy instructors.

GRACE KELLY Alto sax player Grace Kelly had already released three CDs by the time she was 13. She picked up the sax around age 10, and by 13, when she began studying with sax legend Lee Konitz, she was already receiving professional bookings at prestigious jazz clubs. By 16, she was the youngest artist ever to be named to the DownBeat Critics Poll. Now 22, Grace has played/recorded with a Who’s Who of musical luminaries including Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, Phil Woods, Harry Connick Jr., Dianne Reeves, Ann Hampton Callaway, Cedar Walton and many others. She auditioned for Berklee College of Music and at 16, received a full scholarship, simultaneously touring with her own band while completing her studies at Berklee, finishing college at age 19. She has taught residency workshops at Berklee since 2012 and has performed more than 600 concerts as a leader at prominent venues worldwide. She has been voted “Best Jazz Act” in Boston four consecutive years and Best National Jazz Act in 2012. She has received the ASCAP Foundation’s WWW.VAILJAZZ.ORG 71

CHRISTOPH LUTY Bassist Christoph Luty resides in the Los Angeles area and maintains a busy concert schedule, appearing in venues throughout the US, Japan and Europe. In addition to performing, Christoph is a remarkable teacher, educating young bassists at California State University Long Beach, as well as at his private studio. He earned his Masters of Music degree from the University of Southern California and continues to play with his mentor John Clayton as longtime bassist of the ClaytonHamilton Jazz Orchestra. Christoph is best known for his big, natural sound, melodic bass lines and solos, and his articulate arco playing. He performs internationally with the Jeff Hamilton Trio and has collaborated, recorded and toured with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, Shirley Horn, Milt Jackson, Jeff Clayton, Bill Cunliffe, James Moody, Curtis Stigers, Anthony Wilson, Harry Allen and many other jazz notables.

MILE HI GOSPEL ENSEMBLE The Mile Hi Gospel Ensemble is comprised of six Denver-area professional singers and entertainers, each with decades of international exposure and experience. This energetic, enthusiastic group comes together at various times, in various configurations, to provide passion, prayer and amazing musicality in both religious and secular settings. Three of the group’s members sing together frequently in a band called “Tunisia.” Three others have been in a very successful a capella group and several others sing regularly at Mile Hi Church in Lakewood, CO. KEN PEPLOWSKI Ken Peplowski grew up in Cleveland playing clarinet in a Polish polka band, playing his first pro engagement while still in elementary school. In his early teens, Ken was experimenting with jazz by playing in school stage bands and jamming with local jazz musicians. He also taught at the local music store and played in the family’s band. After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with a featured spot on the clarinet. In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band featuring Ken on tenor saxophone; Ken’s tone and virtuosity are often compared to Benny’s. His appearances run the gamut from small local clubs to the Hollywood Bowl, headlining in Las Vegas, and a wide variety of US and European festivals and clubs, from playing on the soundtracks of Woody Allen movies to directing the music for interactive French and Italian cookbooks. He has collaborated with Mel Tormé, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Rosemary Clooney, James Moody, Houston Person, Bill Charlap and many others. Ken has recorded more than 40 CDs as a soloist, and close to 400 as a sideman. Ken was inducted into the Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame in 2013. His latest CD is Maybe September.

LEWIS NASH Born in Phoenix, Lewis Nash started playing drums at age 10. At 19, he began performing with local jazz bands while attending Arizona State University and at 21 was his hometown’s “first call” jazz drummer. Lewis moved to NYC in

1981 and joined vocalist Betty Carter’s trio with whom he toured for four years and later was a member of pianist Tommy Flanagan’s trio for 10 years. To date he has appeared on more than 400 albums, earning him the designation Jazz’s Most Valuable Player by Modern Drummer magazine. CHUCK REDD VIBES

Chuck Redd is an accomplished performer on both drums and vibraphone. He began performing and recording internationally when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio in 1980 at the age of 21. That same year he also joined the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel/Charlie Byrd/Herb Ellis). To date he has logged 13 extensive European tours and five tours of Japan, with the Barney Kessel Trio, Ken Peplowski, Terry Gibbs and Conte Candoli.

He was featured vibraphonist with the Mel Tormé All-Star Jazz Quintet in the early ‘90s, and later was featured with the prestigious Milt Jackson Tribute Band. He has toured and performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Flanagan, Dick Hyman, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Laurindo Almeida, Tal Farlow, Red Norvo, Scott Hamilton, Mickey Roker and Frank Vignola. In addition to performances at The White House, Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Chuck was a 15-year member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He is on the faculty at The University of Maryland School of Music and presents master classes, workshops and lectures around the country. His latest CD is The Common Thread.

ERIC REED Eric Reed was born in Philadelphia and grew up playing piano in his father’s storefront Baptist church. A musical sponge in his early years... absorbing everything he heard...he migrated to jazz after hearing recordings by Art Blakey, Ramsey Lewis and Dave Brubeck. He started playing at age 2, began private lessons by age 7, but considers himself largely self-taught, memorizing music note-by-note rather than by learning written music. After moving to L.A. at 11, his music theory teacher, perhaps recognizing the inevitable, directed him toward hard-swinging jazz recordings. As a teen he was already working with such West Coast luminaries as Buddy Collette and John and Jeff Clayton, and was soon grabbed by Wynton Marsalis for a Midwest tour, thereafter becoming a permanent member of various Marsalis ensembles. He has also worked in the bands of Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Patti Labelle, Quincy Jones and Natalie Cole. Eric has been involved in various Hollywood/TV scoring projects, serves as musical conductor for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and has served on the faculty of Juilliard School of Music; he also performs master classes worldwide. He has recorded more than 20 CDs, latest of which is Reflections of a Grateful Heart. Selections from his CD We 2 with Wycliffe Gordon will be performed in their duo appearance at the Vail Jazz Party.

A noted guitarist and educator from Brockton, MA, Bob Sneider has performed, toured and/or recorded with a long list of jazz notables including Nat Adderley, Lou Donaldson, Joey DeFrancesco, Joe Locke, Ken Peplowski, Eric Alexander, Jon Faddis and Keter Betts. He also toured for several years with Chuck Mangione and has performed in major festivals, concert halls and jazz clubs throughout North, Central & South America and Europe. Bob is also a veteran of the Fletcher Henderson and Nat Pierce bands, and has made frequent appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Pops, playing both guitar and banjo. Between gigs and recording projects, Bob is Assistant Professor of Jazz Guitar at the Eastman School of Music.

TERELL STAFFORD It all started for Terell Stafford when he picked up a trumpet at age 13 and never put it down. Born in Miami, raised in Chicago and Silver Spring, MD, Terell was trained in classical and jazz trumpet, earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Maryland and a Master of Music from Rutgers University. Terell’s career was launched in the early 1990s when he recorded and performed with Bobby Watson’s acclaimed quintet, Horizon, with whom he continues to perform. Subsequently he performed with McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, the Kenny Barron Sextet, the Jimmy Heath Big Band and the Jon Faddis Orchestra. Terell has performed with the Clayton Brothers Quintet, Bill Cunliffe, Cedar Walton and Herbie Mann and has appeared on over 80 recordings. He is a member of the Grammy®-winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and is prominently featured on a number of Grammy®-nominated recordings. To date, Terell has released six albums including the recent, highly acclaimed This Side of Strayhorn. Active as a music educator, Terell was formerly a faculty member at the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies and is currently Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University. He has taught at the Vail Jazz Workshop for 16 years.

CURTIS STIGERS Blurring the lines between jazz, pop, soul, rock, blues and country, Curtis Stigers achieved early success on the pop charts with music he wrote and performed on “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. DownBeat Magazine named him a jazz “Rising Male Star.” You Inspire Me, released in 2003 was the London Times’ number one jazz album of that year. He’s toured worldwide with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Prince and has shared billing with jazz greats George Benson, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Randy and Michael Brecker and Toots Thielemans. He has performed on “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” JazzTimes has called him “one of the best male jazz singers of his generation.” Curtis has appeared on albums by Al Green, Jules Shear, Suzzy Roche and Julia Fordham, and his early mentor Gene Harris. His commitment to songcraft is his touchstone, and he demonstrates subtle swing, exquisite phrasing and depth of emotion in his recent albums, Real Emotional and Lost in Dreams, both on Concord Records. He was also nominated for an Emmy® award for the theme for “The Sons of Anarchy” which he co-wrote and sang. Touring extensively in Europe, he has a large and loyal following on the Continent, recently being named “International Male Jazz Singer of the Year” in Germany. BYRON STRIPLING Columbus Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director and trumpet virtuoso, Byron Stripling has become a national favorite, soloing with the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Utah Symphony and The American Jazz Philharmonic. Born in Atlanta, the son of a classical singer, Byron earned his stripes as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster. He has played with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson and Buck Clayton in addition to The Lincoln Center Classical Jazz Orchestra, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and The GRP All Star Big Band. Byron is also a featured sideman with numerous other artists including Natalie Cole, Lena Horne, Sonny Rollins, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan and Freddie Cole. Dave Stryker grew up in Omaha and moved to NYC in 1980 to establish a place for himself and his guitar in the local music scene. In the mid’80s he joined Jack McDuff’s group, meeting tenor sax great Stanley Turrentine who would occasionally sit in with the group on its frequent gigs in NYC. Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet and for the next nine years they played all the major festivals, concert halls and great jazz clubs throughout the world. With Turrentine, Stryker was able to play with many jazz greats, including Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. He has recorded and published more than 130 of his own compositions, writing/arranging/ playing with such artists as Kevin Mahogany, Javon Jackson and Eliane Elias. His distinctive guitar sound has garnered numerous accolades from both the DownBeat Readers Poll and DownBeat Critics Polls. He has been featured on more than 50 CDs as a sideman and another 25 as a leader. His latest CD, Eight Track, is a reimagining of classic pop tunes from the ‘70s.

A native of the San Fernando Valley, CA, Katie Thiroux has studied both classical and jazz bass, as well as jazz voice and piano. Hailing from a musical family, she began violin lessons at age 4, switched to the bass at age 8, then added singing to her repertoire in middle school. She was a member of the Grammy® Jazz Band for four years running, and won the DownBeat Award for Outstanding Vocal Performance as well as the Los Angeles Jazz Society New Talent Award. While in her last semester at Berklee College of Music (Presidential Scholarship), she was invited to join the faculty at Berklee’s satellite school, University de San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador for a year. By her early 20s, Katie was already teaching her winning bass style, acrobatic vocals and brilliant instrumental arrangements to more than 30 bass and vocal students. She recently received her Master’s in Jazz Studies at Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (CSULB) and is pursuing her career as a leader and sideman. Now 26, the hard-swinging bassist was influenced by the styles of Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Bill Evans and Anita

JEFF TYZIK Jeff Tyzik started his career as a much-in-demand jazz trumpeter but later earned a reputation as one of America’s foremost pops conductors. Jeff holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music. Early in his career, Jeff worked with Chuck Mangione and Doc Severinsen, winning a Grammy® Award for producing the album The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen. He has also produced and composed theme music for many of the major television networks and released six of his own albums, most recently Honor: Portraits of America. Now in his 19th season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeff is in great demand as a guest conductor across North America, with recent guest appearances including the Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and Milwaukee Symphony with such Vail favorites as Byron Stripling, Curtis Stigers, Ann Hampton Calloway and Tony DeSare. A consummate musician, he is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. Tyzik will conduct on June 27 and perform on July 2 for Vail Jazz.

JERRY WELDON A native New Yorker, Jerry Weldon and his tenor sax are veterans of the NY jazz scene. After graduating from the Rutgers University Jazz Program, he joined the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, touring extensively in the US, Europe, South America and Japan. After a long stint with Hampton, he embarked on a lengthy tour of duty with organist Jack McDuff, being featured on numerous recordings with McDuff’s group “Heatin’ System.” In 1990, Jerry became a charter member and featured soloist with Harry Connick Jr.’s big band, affording him the opportunity to tour the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and also perform on many TV shows worldwide with the Connick Orchestra. Jerry has performed and recorded with Jimmy McGriff, Joey DeFrancesco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Al Grey, George Cables, Cedar Walton, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Keter Betts and Mel Tormé. Paul Wells began playing drums at the age of 10 in his hometown of Pittsburgh. He later moved to the NY area to attend the renowned jazz studies program at William Paterson University and to study privately with John Riley, Kenny Washington and Bill Stewart. Since graduating, Paul has performed and recorded internationally with a diverse selection of artists including Deborah Harry, Joe Williams, Curtis Stigers, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Vancouver Symphony, Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, The Duke Ellington Legacy, Mark Murphy, Nellie McKay, Houston Person and Rufus Reid. Paul is also a contributing writer for Modern Drummer magazine.

MARTIN WIND Martin Wind was born in Flensburg, Germany in 1968 and in 1996 the bassist/composer moved to New York to study at New York University with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service. In 1998 he earned his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and Composition studying with Mike Richmond, Jim McNeely, Tom Boras, Mike Holober and Kenny Werner. Since his move to New York, Martin has become a regular at all the major jazz clubs and is also in demand as a session player; his soundtrack credits include “The Alamo,” “Intolerable Cruelty,” “Mona Lisa Smiles” and “Fur.” He has recorded and/or performed with Monty Alexander, Lalo Schifrin, Pat Metheny, Bucky Pizzarelli, Benny Green, Mark Murphy, Toots Thielemans, Michael Brecker, and many others. In 1995 Martin finished third at the International Thelonious Monk Bass Competition in Washington, D.C. and a year later he won the first Cognac Hennessy/Blue Note Jazz Search in Germany. In 2000 he was the first jazz musician to win the Cultural Award of his home state Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Martin has served on the faculty at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Germany and is currently on the faculty at New York University. Since 2007 he’s been leading his own quartet and has released 10 albums as leader or co-leader, the most recent of which is Turn Out the Stars.
