VAIL JAZZ FOUNDATION’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS JAZZ GOES TO SCHOOL Each year the Vail Jazz Foundation brings jazz education to every 4 th and 5th grader in Eagle County as part of its mission to preserve jazz with a special emphasis on young musicians and young audiences. Now in its 17 th year, Jazz Goes to School teaches jazz history and concepts to over 1,100 students each year. Under the direction of local jazz educator and musician, Tony Gulizia, along with up to 5 other instructors, students are guided through a four-session progression on the origins of jazz, its history and famous musicians, basic concepts of rhythm and styles of jazz, and an introduction to the instruments used to play jazz. Using teaching techniques that combine demonstration and hands-on participation, students are encouraged to play various instruments and to even compose their own lyrics for blues tunes. The final session is a true jazz concert at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, where students are treated to an auditory tour of jazz history as well as hearing their own lyrics put to music.

Jazz Goes to School is supported by Alpine Bank, Vail Resorts Echo and all of the elementary schools and their PTO’s.

VAIL JAZZ WORKSHIP—“THE VAIL JAZZ ALL-STARS” The Vail Jazz Workshop is the preeminent jazz program for high school jazz musicians in the United States. This year, the 18th year of the Workshop, 12 aspiring young jazz musicians will be invited to Vail for a ten day residency where they will be taught and mentored by a teaching staff lead by John Clayton, noted jazz musician and educator, along with Jeff Clayton, Bill Cunliffe, Wycliffe Gordon, Lewis Nash and Terell Stafford. Working up to 12 hours a day without written music, students receive professional level instruction and a one-of-a-kind experience that has launched many successful music careers. The competition to gain a spot at each year’s Workshop is fierce and those talented (and lucky enough) to be selected are provided full or partial scholarships by the Vail Jazz Foundation. By the end of this intense program in Vail, these young musicians are billed as the “Vail Jazz All-Stars” and perform throughout the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party alongside their instructors and other professionals.

NEW YOUTH JAZZ PROGRAM IN 2013 The Vail Jazz Foundation’s newest youth educational program will be presented three times during the summer of 2013 in conjunction with the Jazz @ the Market series. Offered free of charge to youth of the Vail Valley, residents and visitors alike, the program is designed to utilize some of the most effective teaching techniques developed during the past 16 years as part of Jazz Goes to School. The program offers an engaging and fun learning experience for youngsters 6 to 12 years old, enabling the VJF to continue to pursue our mission to perpetuate jazz by teaching the fundamentals of jazz to the next generation of jazz players and listeners. The program will be an interactive jazz experience allowing each participant a hands-on opportunity to learn the fundamentals of jazz. Participants will play a variety of percussion instruments—maracas, bongos, congas, tambourines, xylophones and Orff instruments. And they will listen to and join with jazz musicians in playing music and learning the art of improvisation. In the coming years, we hope to expand this program to serve many more throughout Vail during our wonderful summer season.
