What’s new in 2017 We’re fired up for the 2017 GoPro Mountain Games and all the new events and enhancements that are part of this year’s event. Along with new events, we hope you enjoy our mobile-friendly website (mountaingames.com) and an enhanced event layout that will make navigating, exploring, and enjoying the Mountain Games easier than ever before.
with the Pepi’s Face-Off hill climb in Vail that will whet the whistle of our vertically-inclined runners and yet will also take place in the Village, where spectators can experience schadenfreude at our competitor’s expense.
The New TriggerPoint Ultimate Mountain Challenge Starting this year, everyone who registers will also be entered in the TriggerPoint Ultimate Mountain Challenge (UMC). It will be graded on a point system, and finishing any of our events will gain YOU, the athlete, points in the UMC.*
You go, yoga! Yoga has always been a part of the GoPro Mountain Games, but this year we offer an expanded lineup that will elevate yoga to a new level. Superstar Kathryn Budig will offer upbeat and mellow classes, while Gina Caputo, Outlaw Yoga, Joe Joe Melone, Yvonne Schwartz, Bobby L’Heureux, Scotty Stoughton and even AIReal Yoga will bring a colorful and diverse selection of yoga options to this year’s Mountain Games.
Each event will be given a multiplier based on difficulty (1, 2, and 3), and athletes will be given points according to their finish ranking. Finish first in a most-difficult event (x3), and you’ll get 9 points. Participate in a fun and untimed event like the mud run, and you’ll get 1 point. Bonus points will be given for “cross-discipline” participation.
GoPro Mountains of Music The GoPro Mountains of Music has long been known for its amazing free music lineup, which traditionally took place at Checkpoint Charlie in the Village. This year it all steps up a notch as we bring three nights of music to the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater (aka "The Amp") at Ford Park in Vail.
Follow the action on our website and on our leaderboards throughout the venue.

*DockDogs, IFSC World Cup Climbing, and Slackline Industries Invitational will not be included in the UMC. IFSC World Cup Climbing and slackline are invitation only, and DockDogs is a non-human event.
Blue Buffalo Dueling Dogs Similar to two cars racing for pinks, Dueling Dogs brings street racing to the dock with a head-to-head jump and swim race. When the light hits green, both dogs launch off the dock and swim to retrieve a toy suspended at the end of the pool. Fastest pup wins!

An uphill battle on the legendary Pepi’s Face It is with a tinge of sadness that we say goodbye to the Vail Pass Half Marathon. Beloved by the few and the proud, the event will be re-incarnated

Oh Vail,
how do we love thee?
Let us count the ways. of Gore Creek. We will have food, coffee, and a lot of good folks on hand for this family friendly event, and we are asking for strong participation from our community and those attending the GoPro Mountain Games. You might think Gore Creek is a pristine mountain stream, unaffected by the impacts of urbanization. And, certainly, our very own Gore Creek is among the most beautiful in the world. No, really … on Sunday, June 11, we will determine the amount of love we have for Vail based on a head count of the people who show up to the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for the Love Vail Klean Up: A National River Cleanup Event. We need numbers people! That means YOU! Every year the Mountain Games gives back to our natural surroundings with a cleanup or trail maintenance event. This year, we’re walking the creekside path and cleaning as we go. We’re also going all in, and we’ve brought in the big guns: American Rivers, Klean Kanteen, the Vail Valley Foundation, the Town of Vail and the Eagle River Watershed Council are partnering up during the event to help clean up and help keep trash out

Unfortunately there are too many accounts of trash, paint, toxic substances, food leftovers and many other pollutants finding their way into our river. You’ll hear from us about this issue all throughout the event as we try to take care of our river and aim to become a zero waste event. The Town of Vail is making it a number one priority to take care of this precious resource via their Restore the Gore campaign. It’s a big effort that will take a lot of small acts of kindness toward our waterway – so do your part, sign up, and we’ll see you at the Ford Amphitheater Sunday morning, June 11.
Time: Sunday, June 11, 8:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Location: Meet at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail. First 100 registrants receive a 20oz insulated Klean Kanteen. Coffee served in the morning and a light lunch at 11:30 a.m. Gloves and trash/recycling bags will be provided. Please bring a backpack with layers of clothes and good walking shoes. Register at: https://www.americanrivers.org/make-an-impact/national-river-cleanup/vailkleanup/.
Restoring
the Gore, one step at a time Vail’s Gore Creek is an impaired stream that is failing to meet the EPA’s Clean Water Act standards By Lauren Glendenning Brought to you by the Town of Vail
A
t first glance, Gore Creek may appear pristine, which is why it’s shocking that everything from toxic paint, cement, cooking grease, drywall dust and putrid food have been poured down the storm drains that flow into Gore Creek. “People don’t realize that pouring into the storm drain is basically the same as pouring directly into the creek,” said Peter Wadden, watershed education coordinator for the town of Vail. “Storm drains are different from sanitary sewers — they flow directly into the creek, unfiltered.” Vail’s only major tributary might look pristine, but there are continuing signs of declining health. Gore Creek is on the Colorado Department of Health and Environment’s list of impaired waterways. It’s also not meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards under the Clean Water Act. One of the main issues is that Gore Creek’s macroinvertebrates, or little insects, are on the decline. These bugs — specifically mayflies, stoneflies and
caddisflies — are an important food source for trout, birds and each other, influencing the overall health of the entire creek and everything that lives in it. The town’s Gore Creek Water Quality Improvement Plan identified three causes for the decline of the insects: loss of riparian habitat; pollutants from urban runoff; and impacts from land use activities. “They’re a really crucial foundation of the ecosystem and the food chain,” Wadden said. “They’re also the most susceptible to pollution and the first to disappear when something impacts a body of water.”
What’s causing the declining insect populations? As the town of Vail has urbanized and expanded since its founding in 1966, forest and wetlands have been replaced with impervious surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways, streets and rooftops. Contaminants that run across these hard surfaces flow toward the creek at a much faster pace, picking up more sediment and pollutants along the way, Wadden said. In 2016, the town of Vail adopted a Gore Photos by Jack Affleck, courtesy of the town of Vail.

When pesticides or fertilizers are applied incorrectly, on windy days, or before a storm, they can make their way into the Creek at harmful levels.
Traction sand, de-icers and cinders used to treat icy roads increase dissolved solids, chloride and conductivity in streams.
Parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, and other “impervious surfaces” speed the flow of water— and pollutants—to streams.
When residents or business mow their lawns and sweep or spray grass clippings onto paved areas, rainfall carries fertilizer and pesticides directly to Gore Creek.

Gore Creek—the clear, rocky mountain stream that runs through the heart of Vail—offers a peaceful respite for residents and visitors, important wildlife habitat, and a water supply for downstream communities. But despite its beauty, the river’s health is threatened. Here’s a run-down of the challenges and the many ways we can all play a part in the solution.

Creek Strategic Action Plan with about 220 specific action items. They include stream bank restoration projects to improve the riparian areas around the creek, which act as buffer zones and filter runoff water, as well as education and outreach, data collection and monitoring, rules and regulations, better management practices and other site-specific projects. Holly Loff, executive director of the Eagle River Watershed Council, said stream health is an issue in many urbanized mountain communities, not just Vail. She said the blame can’t be placed on any one cause and instead uses the phrase “death by 1,000 cuts.” The sum of so many small impacts is creating a very large problem, she said. “People feel overwhelmed to learn that they might be having an impact,” she said. “Everyone can play a role in improving the health of Gore Creek.”
Do your part this weekend
Local residents and visitors can make a difference this weekend by paying attention to their impacts to Gore Creek. Learn more at lovevail.org/gorecreek.
PROPER USE OF CHEMICALS
SPOT-TREAT WEEDS
MORE NATIVE PLANTS
PROPER DISPOSAL
Avoid the use of pesticides or fertilizer under windy conditions or when rain is forecast. Remember: The Label is the Law.
Reduce the use of chemicals by removing weeds by hand and spot-treating critical areas.
Add trees and shrubs to your yard to capture and hold rainwater before it can reach the creek.
Dispose of garden chemicals correctly by taking unused products to your local household hazardous waste site.
A common misperception, especially among local residents, is that traction sand used on I-70 is to blame for stream health issues, Wadden said. “But bug populations on Black Gore Creek are still healthy,” he said, adding that negative stream impacts are seen in developed areas that aren’t near a major highway, such as Red Sandstone Creek.
How to make a difference Vail residents and visitors have countless opportunities to make positive impacts and also reduce negative ones. Town of Vail Environmental Sustainability Manager Kristen Bertuglia said residents can make a difference by not mowing their properties near the creek. “This is one of the most important things they can do as stewards of the environment, as it reduces erosion, pollutants and the need for chemicals,
HOW IS WATER QUALITY DETERMINED? Macroinvertebrates are used to assess water quality because they have limited movement, high reproductive rates, and varying sensitivity to pollution. Data shows that macroinvertebrate populations in Gore Creek are well below healthy levels, paralleling the density of urban development.
B L AC K GORE CREEK
while creating wildlife habitat,” she said. “They can also make sure that they reduce the use of pesticides, read the labels to check to see if they are toxic to aquatic insects, and ensure that no overhead tree foliar spraying is done within 100 feet of the creek.” Wadden hopes the outreach can also help change people’s perceptions about what beautiful landscaping looks like. Kentucky bluegrass needs a lot of chemical assistance at 8,150 feet, for example, so it’s better to plant vegetation that is more natural to this environment, he said. Loff said allowing native plants to grow close to the stream, as well as choosing natural fertilizers and hebicides, have positive impacts. “They’re all little tiny changes we can make to our lives,” she said. “Gore Creek is a beautiful mountain stream and it can be fixed.”
• Don’t dump anything into a storm drain, ever. • Stay on designated trails and never trample through vegetation along the creek. • Dispose of waste in proper containers. • Be mindful of the impacts you could have on the creek. • Join the bike path cleanup on Sunday, June 11. The volunteer cleanup, hosted by the Eagle River Watershed Council, begins at the Ford Amphitheater at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served.

2017 Expo & Demo Partners:
VENUES: Located throughout Meadow Drive, the Covered Bridge, Mountain Plaza, Golden Peak and the International Bridge, Gear Town is the GoPro Mountain Games equivalent to a farmers market with one big exception, we’ve traded the fresh produce and random knick knacks for gear, SWAG, food, beer and the largest collection of outdoor brands to ever take Vail by storm. Volvo Adventure Village is a FREE family-friendly interactive fun zone where kids can learn to kayak “siton-top” style in giant kayak tanks, climb on a portable climbing wall, try slacklining, relax with some arts and crafts just enjoy all the Mountain Games action taking place. All EverBank X-Country Mountain Bike events will also start & finish in Volvo Adventure Village, so bikers – park in Lionshead on race day for easy access to your race. This central Mountain Games town is home to the world famous EverBank Climbing Wall, Pepi's Face-Off, running event starts and finishes, sponsor booths and the TriggerPoint Athlete & Media Lounge. Mountain Plaza is the main base area of Vail Mountain and home of Gondola One. Who doesn’t love watching our 4-legged friends launch off a dock and belly flop into the water? This year Dog Town doubled the fun with the addition of a second DockDogs pool which will host the Dueling Dogs competitions. Pup-friendly sponsors and non-stop activity make this the spot for pups and their humans. Dog Town is also home to Athlete, VIP and Media Registration and is located at the Golden Peak base area of Vail Mountain. Where your chakras and favorite events align. Zen Zone is the epicenter of mountain yoga and is located on the vibrant fields of Ford Park. Serious, causal, and new yogis shouldn’t miss out on the variety of classes offered throughout the weekend. The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail seats 1,260 guests in covered seating and an additional 1,300 on its expansive grassy hillside with a breathtaking view of the Rocky Mountains. We’re stoked to host all 2017 GoPro Mountains of Music free concerts presented by Coors Light at this spectacular outdoor venue.

Kayak: Coors Light Steep Creek Championship Homestake Creek @ Red Cliff, CO Dropping a whopping 480-feet per mile, Homestake Creek is a paddling gem that was once known only to Vail Valley locals. Now, the world’s best paddlers charge down the ¼-mile chunder where only the top 10 boaters in the male and female divisions advance after the first run. Race rules are simple. The fastest combined time after two runs wins.
Kayak: Coors Light Down River Kayak Sprint Gore Creek @ L.L. Bean Gear Town Paddling endurance is only one aspect of this down-river race – reading the water is the other. Boaters shuttle out to the East Vail put-in and race three miles down the class II-III waters of Gore Creek to the Covered Bridge finish in Vail Village. With a rally race format – kayakers drop at timed intervals – competitors are racing against the clock.

I-Bridge @ L.L. Bean Gear Town This mainstay of the GoPro Mountain Games features the world’s best playboaters in an old-fashioned throw-down at the Vail Whitewater Park at the I-Bridge in L.L Bean Gear Town. Each kayaker has one minute to throw his or her best cartwheels, loops, tricky-wu’s, phonics monkeys, space godzillas and more in an attempt to impress the judges and the crowd for the highest combined score. The best of the best qualify for Saturday’s finals.
I-Bridge @ L.L. Bean Gear Town This is the whitewater version of a demolition derby. As many as 10 kayakers race through a 200–meter timed sprint and attempt to avoid being knocked out by the 8 Ballers, kayakers waiting patiently to attack and slow them down on their way to the finish line at the International Bridge. Think full-contact kayaking, where rubbin’ (and ramming) is racin’.

Stand Up Paddle: YETI Down River SUP Sprint Gore Creek @ L.L. Bean Gear Town Mirrored off the classic Down River Sprint, the race is on a timed three-mile stretch of Gore Creek from East Vail to Vail Village. Competitors must stand strong because snow melt from the nearby Gore Range makes for brisk waters while navigating the class II/III course. Mix in a handful of low bridges, drops, and wave trains as paddlers battle it out in the SUP’ing of Gore Creek.
Stand Up Paddle: YETI SUP Surf Cross I-Bridge @ L.L. Bean Gear Town The first to survive the 200-yard sprint, ducking bridges and dodging Colorado Coconuts (pinecones) will take the top spot on the podium. It's going to be rowdy.

Raft: TUDOR Raft Cross Two person teams will have a chance to showcase their speed, agility, and aggression in a timed qualifying run through the heart of Vail Village on Gore Creek. Teams will then be placed in “race pods” of no more than three teams to go head to head in the Vail Whitewater Park (1/10th of a mile). The winner(s) advance to the next round. Along the way, rafters will have to navigate no less than two upstream gates and don’t forget; RAMMING IS ALLOWED.
Gore Creek @ L.L. Bean Gear Town Identical in format to the Down River Kayak and SUP Sprints, the R2 Raft Sprint is a three-mile raft race (two person rafts) on the Class II/III whitewater of Gore Creek from East Vail to the Covered Bridge in Vail Village. With a rally race format, rafters drop at timed intervals and teams will be racing against the clock.

disc golf Mountain Masters Disc Golf Ford Park @ Zen Zone Bridge Street @ Gear Town Maloit Park @ Minturn, CO As its name implies, disc golf is golf with a flying disc, rather than a ball. The sport was formalized in the 1970s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). Like many of the events at the GoPro Mountain Games, there’s a twist. Competitors must survive three skills challenges, a 9-hole Amp Course, and NEW THIS YEAR – an 18-hole Maloit Park course in Minturn, CO before earning their place in the finals on Sunday. The top 72 players with the best skills in qualifying will step up to play in the final round of golf on our one-of-a-kind disc golf championship course. Blue Buffalo Dueling Dogs Dog Town *NEW FOR 2017* Similar to two cars racing for pinks, Dueling Dogs brings street racing to the dock with a head-to-head jump and swim race. When the light hits green, both dogs launch off the dock and swim to retrieve a toy suspended at the end of the pool. Fastest pup wins!
Blue Buffalo DockDogs Outdoor Big Air Dog Town The easiest way to imagine a DockDogs Outdoor Big Air competition is to think of it as the long jump for dogs. The dog sprints down the dock runway, leaping off the end as its master throws the dog’s favorite toy out in front. The canine with the longest measured distance wins.
follow @MOUNTAINGAMES / #GOPROMTNGAMES like mountain games find MOUNTAINGAMES.COM
Dog Town If Big Air is the long jump of dog competition, Extreme Vertical is the high jump. A bumper is suspended ten feet above the water and the pup sprints down the dock, jumping up at the end in an effort to grab the toy. The dog with the highest measured jump is the winner.
Dog Town Speed Retrieve is a timed event that involves the K9 athlete jumping off the dock and swimming to a toy positioned at the far end of the pool. Once the dog retrieves the toy, the clock stops and the pup with the fastest time takes the prize.

Ultimate mountain challenge The NEW TriggerPoint Ultimate Mountain Challenge Taking part in the Ultimate Challenge is simple: 1. Check out the list of events at MountainGames.com. 2. Create an itinerary for your Mountain Games weekend, or choose from several “paths to victory” packages based on your areas of expertise. 3. Paddle/Run/Bike hard for your piece of the $8,000 prize purse! Every year, the toughest of the tough have taken on the challenge of the Ultimate Mountain Challenge at the GoPro Mountain Games. After 10 years of the challenge, we’re now instituting a new format and taking this event to the next level. Starting this year, every athlete registered will earn points in the Ultimate Mountain Challenge (UMC). The event will be calculated on a point system, and finishing any of our athletic events will gain YOU, the athlete, points in the UMC. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty Scoring: Each event has been given a multiplier based on difficulty (x1, x2, and x3), and athletes will be given points according to their finish ranking. Finish first in a most-difficult event (x3), and you’ll get 9 points. Finish first in a medium difficulty event (x2) and you’ll get 6 points. Participate in a fun and untimed event like the mud run, and you’ll get 1 point. Bonus points will be given for “cross-discipline” participation (e.g. participating in a bike event and a kayak event will get you an additional bonus point vs participating in two bike events). Want to design your own path to victory? No problem. Take a look at the complete point-system matrix below. Each discipline is represented by a different color. Participating in a new event from a new color earns +1 bonus point.
