The Height of Pleasure Valais

Reliable Snow Conditions Thanks to High Altitude

www.visitvalais.ch

Aletsch Arena

Valais is a winter paradise. More sunshine than anywhere else in the Alps and plenty of snow until well into spring. Plus boundless ski areas and a wide range of pleasures appealing to young and old alike.  Guaranteed Snow. The mighty glaciers and 47 four-thousanders not only ensure a perfect backdrop in Valais but also guarantee snow. Just about all the winter sport resorts here are located higher than 1500 meters above sea level, nine areas are even over 3000 metres above sea level. And to ensure that our guests find the very best conditions in which to enjoy the Valais sun, we invest state-of-the-art cable-car and piste-preparation equipment year after year.  Diversity. Given this setting, the fun on the slopes is pretty much boundless. 2800 kilometres of prepared runs await skiers and snowboarders. If you don’t want to venture onto the ski slopes, there are plenty of other ways to get out and enjoy the snow: over 1000 kilometres of cross-country tracks, over 1000 kilometres of winter hiking paths, some 900 kilometres of snowshoe trails and over 60 toboggan runs

are ready for you to discover. Added to this are numerous snowparks and trend sports like snow-kiting or ice-climbing, while the world-famous thermal spas ensure that anyone can kick back and relax. Cosiness. People who like romantic mountain huts will love Valais as well. Indeed, the people of Valais like nothing better than a cosy get-together – be it over a raclette or fondue by a wood stove or a top-quality dinner in an elegant atmosphere. The locals are also highly sociable, as can be seen at numerous festivities and events on and by the slopes – such as mass downhill races in witch costumes, wild on-piste concerts and world-class freeride competitions. It is in our nature and culture to pamper you and do you good, as we have done for generations and you will no doubt notice as soon as you arrive. We don’t simply leave you to enjoy the fascinating mountain scenery, we also love to welcome you properly – less as guests and more as friends. Have we aroused your curiosity? If we have, why not leaf through these pages to gain a first impression for yourself. At the same time, we suggest you visit our website www.visitvalais.ch regularly until you arrive for the very latest information and news. We look forward to seeing you soon.

➤ Simply Tops! Giant mountains grow from the eternal ice of the Aletsch Glacier. Thousands of years of peace and magnificent beauty. Whether Belalp, Riederalp, Bettmeralp or Fiesch-Eggishorn: the crystal-clear, pure air and the incomparable view over the Aletsch Glacier (UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site) make your heart jump with joy. It’s no surprise that this white enticement enchants ski fans, snowboarders and families in equal measure and that the days are never long enough with all this snow, sport and sun. And where else can you unwind on 75.5 km of winter hiking trails? All around the mightiest glacier in the Alps. Skiers and snowboarders, too, will be thrilled by Rosswald and Rothwald. In Brig, the focal point of the Aletsch holiday and shopping region, you will find everything simply “tip-top”. And if all those sports and après-ski activities are still not enough, there is the added option of relaxing at the Breiten spa and wellness centre.

➤ The Wintersports Arena. Fancy some skiing? You won’t encounter stress, noise or ski-lift queues here. You won’t find crowded slopes or bad-tempered people here either. Instead, we offer a wonderful winter landscape with a panoramic view of the most beautiful and highest Swiss mountains, offering a tempting prospect for skiing or snowboarding. We are Valais in miniature, where children up to 9 years of age ski free of charge, major theatrical works, operettas and musicals are performed and the Heida grape vine flourishes in the highest vineyard in Europe. And culture does not come at the expense of fun: anyone who has skied one of our many slopes will know what we are talking about. And if you would like to swap skiing areas for variety, it couldn’t be easier: you can use the same ski pass in Bürchen, Unterbäch, Eischoll, Visperterminen and Gspon. And for snowshoe tour enthusiasts, we would like to mention our hiking trails through snow-covered forests or on a beautiful full-moon night.

➤ A Winter Fairy Tale. High above the Matter valley, the village of Grächen lets dreams come true. Much has been invested in the infrastructure in the past years to be able to offer all you can wish for when it comes to holidays for families and adventure seekers. The Sisu family park is the largest and nicest of its kind in Switzerland, a magic world of over 50’000 m². Here your children can learn how to ski, assisted by Sisu. Four children’s ski lifts take them uphill, and soon they’ll be able to ski down on their own – safely, easily and playfully. The day nursery with its experienced staff, situated right in the skiing area, is also very popular with the little ones, which makes the adults happy as well! Grächen is a wonderful destination for skiers and snowboarders, but non-skiers can also have fun, be it with the snowtubing carousel, the snowtubing train or the igloo cinema. After spending a splendid day on the slopes you have an attractive choice of restaurants to visit – they offer something for all tastes and budgets, and you will find children’s menus as well as gourmet cuisine to suit your fancy.

➤ Good Powder Snow, Great Fun! Nestling between the Valais and Bernese Alps, the Lötschental-Lauchernalp region ranks among the highest skiing areas in Switzerland. A truly white, glittering magical world awaits you. A snow paradise for skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers and winter hikers. Moreover, the wonderful mountain landscape is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. The valley with its rustic villages lies off the beaten track and is regarded as the most authentic valley in the Alps. If you are suddenly startled by frightening, noisy figures in masks and furs then you are in the midst of the “Tschäggättun”, an ancient Carnival custom. Thanks to the special “Lötschberger” train operated by the BLS railway company, the Lötschental is just a short and comfortable ride away. No matter whether you are an expert or beginner, family group or solo traveller: winter dreams come true in the Lötschental and in Jeizinen.

➤ Out of the Snow, Into the Thermal Spa. In Leukerbad, there is an abundance of thermal spring water. Every day almost four million litres of warm water flow from countless thermal springs into the swimming pools and whirlpools. Nowhere else in the Alps are so many thermal pools filled with medicinal water as here. Added to this are over 300 different wellness treatments for you to choose from. The location of Leukerbad is every bit as impressive in its own right: the spa resort, which has been known since Roman times, sits majestically amid imposing rock faces. And there are also lots of diversions to be found outside the spa temples. Alpine skiing is the order of the day on the Torrent, cross-country skiing and hiking on the Gemmi Pass. In brief: 50 km of slopes and 60 km of hiking trails to ensure plenty of fun. And in the sports arena with climbing wall, the ice and curling rink and the indoor tennis courts, you can show that you didn’t just come to bathe. Albinen, the lovely Valaisan village, is situated only 6 km from the renowned spa resort. Thanks to its location on the south-facing side of the valley, it has become a very popular holiday place. Albinen has much to offer in the winter: sledging, snow shoe hiking and snow trail hiking. One of the highlights is the 8.5 km groomed hiking trail between Albinen and Guttet-Feschel.

In winter, the golf course turns into a children’s paradise, and invites to stroll and cross-country ski.
