Mid Calder Primary School is an ‘open-plan school, which means that our classrooms are open and have no doors. Anyone can see in to our classrooms and we can hear what is going on in the other classrooms round about us. That means we have to work quietly most of the time. If we want to go somewhere to do something noisy or we need silence, we have a ‘Noisy/Quiet Room’

Primary 1 children have been using pattern with these Ladybirds to help them with their adding. The Ladybirds have been made from paper plates. The children have added legs and a head, then added black spots to show their adding facts. This is just one way we at Mid Calder have combined Mathematics and Art for our ‘Let’s Be Artists in Mathematics’ project.

Our school is divided into 5 buildings: Secondary school Cova-Lanzoni, Primary Schools Tolosano and Pirazzini, Kindergartens Il Girasole and Giardino dei Sogni and is located in the city center of Faenza. Our pupils have very different cultural and economic backgrounds. In the last years the number of migrant children attending our classes has strongly increased (currently more than 30% are not Italian), posing to the teachers a new challenge. We activated specific language laboratories and intercultural projects with the support of local and non-local institutions, fostering a higher cultural cohesion and guaranteeing to the majority of foreign students the fulfillment of their educational duty. Our school differentiates itself for the consistent participation in projects and contests, many of them intercultural and related to art, and for the activities aimed at integrating children with special needs. Moreover it started a collaboration with the Education Department of the University of Bologna offering training projects for future teachers.
