2018 IN THE VALLEY OF LIFE Welcome to the last edition of the Grapevine for 2018. By the time this publication is circulated most of us will be getting ready for the festive season and a much-needed break to recharge the batteries. Words by Terry Keller
E
very time I receive the reminder to write my Grapevine article I’m struck by how fast the months are rushing by - the past year has been a blur. Being the end of the year, I thought it would be a good idea to recap on all the highlights of 2018. As everyone will recall the year started off with the dire water situation in the Western Cape in the forefront of everyone’s minds. Fortunately, the Estate had been proactive in the latter part of 2017 and a state-of-the-art Water Purification Plant was installed. By late December the plant was in full production and providing the Estate with a sustainable supply of drinking water. With the uncertainty of the Western Cape water situation going forward, we take pride in the fact that Val de Vie Estate is water secure. With extremely careful water management the Golf Course team were able to ensure that the course was kept alive with the minimal water allocation available - a fantastic achievement in the drought conditions. With the combination of a green playable golf course and shower facilities for golfers, the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course was the destination of choice for golfers and corporates who hosted their golf days with us. The Estate hosted a number of prestigious sporting events most notably Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo, the Absa Cape Epic and Cintron Pink Polo presented by Vodacom all assisting in showcasing the Estate to both a national and international audience. The much-awaited Berg River bridge was completed and opened in June improving access to Stellenbosch and Paarl for 6 GRAPEVINE
many residents. In conjunction with the opening of the bridge, the two sides of the Estate were linked by an internal road and while not the quickest method of travelling from one side to the other, it will improve access to the new The Yard facility. This past year has seen a renewed focus on turning our two restaurants around. Since March a great deal of time and energy has gone into improving the dining experience and chefs Gerhard and Scott have worked tirelessly at this. We are determined to improve service and developing a committed kitchen and restaurant team, as there is still much scope for improvement, but must take some satisfaction that tremendous progress has been made. When comparing the Val de Vie Phase II development area from the start of the year to now, one cannot but be in awe of the speed at which progress is being made. By the time this publication is distributed The Yard will be open and residents will have a host of new facilities to utilise including a 50m outdoor pool, 1000 m² gym, tennis courts and Reuben Riffel’s new restaurant – Reuben’s and Co Cafe. We will indeed end 2018 on a high note. All of this doesn’t just happen by itself, and as the year closes I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who is involved in making this Estate the amazing place it is. Without their passion and hard work none of this would be possible. To our residents, may this festive season be a joyous time of family and rest and we look forward to even more exciting progress in 2019. Take care until next time.

CELEBS PLAY THE PEARL FOR A PURPOSE... AND THE ALL-LADIES TEAM STEAL THE SHOW
Words by Lorraine Hadfield: Val de Vie Foundation Advisor and Val de Vie Estate Resident On a bright and beautiful Spring morning in October, out third Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day at the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course dawned with the promise of big things to come. It did not disappoint. Through the generous actions of the golfers, sponsors and auction donors we were able to raise a record amount of R700 000 for reflective backpacks and school shoes for the non- fee-paying Paarl junior schools.

Shattering the glass ceiling, the all-ladies team of former Miss World, dr. Rolene Strauss, Nanette Nel, Marinda Waldeck and Lizanne Heydenrych won first prize with a score of 92. The team were off to a good start when Nanette Nel sank a 60-foot putt on her first shot of the day. Celebrities participating in the day included former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, ‘Die Heuwels Fantasties’ lead signer Pierre Greeff, Bobby van Jaarsveld, his sister Karlien and her husband Joe Breytenbach.
Sport stars Herschelle Gibbs and
Rob Louw defended their 2017 title against the likes of AJ Venter, Allan Donald, Chester Williams and Tiaan Strauss. Commenting that they “would not give up their day job” Joe Pietersen, Schalk Britz, Heinz Winckler, Neels van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach nevertheless had fun playing for this great cause.
‘After playing golf on our championship course, attendees were treated to a superb dinner, fine wines and entertainment and were encouraged to dig deep for the auction. The R700 000 raised will be allocated to 19 severely under-resourced schools in the Paarl area, by addressing the issue of non-visible pedestrians.’
The Val de Vie Foundation is helping to keep our children in school by providing reflective school bags and road safety awareness training, together with shoes with reflective strips to learners in the Valley. Approximately a quarter of Western Cape learners do not attend school and, while there are many contributing factors, road safety and a decent pair of school shoes are issues that can be addressed and transformed. In the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, most learners walk to school, some as far as 5 kilometres there and back daily. The Val de Vie Foundation partnered with Visibility is Life – an organization dedicated to improving the safety of all pedestrians by educating the youth on road safety and providing reflective gear. With a portion of the funds raised from this 2018 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, a selection of Grade 3 learners attending non-fee-paying schools in the Valley will be provided with a school bag with reflective strips on the front and back. The Foundation has been fortunate that Paul Issa, co-owner of Buccaneer School Shoes and Val de Vie Estate homeowner so generously also partnered to ensure that, with the balance of the funds raised, the most severely financially challenged learners in under resourced schools in the Valley will receive a donation of significantly below cost robust school shoes, with a customised reflective strip. GOLF DIRECTOR REPORT
IT’S TEE TIME As we prepare to round up 2018, our team look forward to a new year of golf on one of South Africa’s top five courses. Words by Damian Wrigley
G
ROWING THE GAME OF GOLF: Our Val de Vie Foundation is known for being proactive and for making a difference in the Drakenstein community. Earlier in the year
Lorraine Hadfield, Val de Vie Foundation Advisor, introduced me to the ‘Growing the Game of Golf’ concept. The idea was to roll out a learn-to-play golf program within the Mbekweni community. With the assistance of Swingfit, we immediately got the ball rolling to set the program in place. Our first session of recruitment took place at the Mbekweni Sports Centre where over 140 kids between the ages of 8 – 12 years (recruited by Hope Through Action) signed up to take part in the learn-toplay program and put their biomechanical skills to the test. After identifying the talent of each of the kids, 60 were selected to attend the second phase session. It was from that second session that our 8 students were selected to receive complimentary golf lessons at the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at Val de Vie Estate. Following a month of weekly lessons, Pearl Valley Golf will select two of the very best golfers to progress to an advanced program with the aid of the Pearl Valley Youth Program. A massive thank you to Aliki Brunt, James Wade and his Swingfit Team together with Jaco Coetzee for all their efforts in getting this initiative off the ground. It was apparent to us all just how big a role sport plays in the upliftment of the Mbeweni Community. There is no doubt that golf will form part of the sport offering at local schools moving forward.

The Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course is in tip-top condition for the summer season
LONG SERVICE AWARDS: At the year-end event for Val de Vie Management staff, held at the Pearl Valley boma, two members of our golf team were awarded with long service awards. A big thank you to Khanyiso Fusa for achieving his five years’ service. To a gentleman who has devoted a decade of his life to Pearl Valley, Terence Valentyn, thank you for your devotion to the company and your input into the success of the golf department. After hearing the directors speak and address the staff it really made me feel proud to be part of this great company. Our motto for the year from Ryk Neethling was “excellence and consistency”, to which we will all be striving for this season.
NEWS FROM THE CAPTAIN: DEAN MEYER The change of season is starting to bring about the very best in our course which is now starting to really look stunning with all the spring flowers in full bloom. Our green keeping team had a challenging winter trying to keep the greens in the condition to which we have become accustomed. I am very happy with the steps being taken by the team and with the considerable support being shown by the developer to find a long-term solution to the challenges of nature. This is no easy task, but I am confident that the approach being taken will maintain our status amongst the top courses in the country.
The Pearl Valley team, participating in the Winelands Challenge against the other golf estates in the region, is being given a very hard run by Steenberg as we try to keep hold of the trophy which we have won for the last few years. Playing at Erinvale recently, Steenberg handled the near gale force winds much better than Pearl Valley, giving them a 15-point lead going into the final round which will be hosted by Pearl Valley. With home course advantage, history has shown that we can overturn such a deficit and we look forward to an exciting finish.
This year’s Nicklaus Challenge, an event where teams of four from all the Nicklaus design courses in South Africa will participate, will be hosted by Pecanwood at the end of 2018. We wish our team everything of the best as they seek to defend another trophy in which we have been regular winners.

PURPOSE-DRIVEN POLO 32 GRAPEVINE
EVENTS
Spearheaded by Val de Vie Events, the immaculately curated Cintron Pink Polo presented by Vodacom once again exceeded expectations in its 9th year running. The occasion, which took place on Saturday, 03 November 2018, brought forth a stunning display of fashion, cuisine, thrilling polo and all-round finesse on Val de Vie Estate’s pristine premises. Above all else, the event paid tribute to survivors of breast cancer in a heartfelt celebration of hope, courage and triumph; an inspiring depiction of solidarity in the fight against breast cancer. Words by The Grapevine Team GRAPEVINE 33
EVENTS
A
s guests arrived to a vibrant atmosphere set by DJ Luma and basked in their glamourous surroundings, South Africa’s leading residential estate turned into a sea of pink hues, splashes of emerald green and touches of gold. This regal colour scheme aptly alluded to the elegant nature of polo, The Sport of Kings. Just as sophisticated were the event’s MCs, former Miss World, Rolene Strauss and The Expresso Show on SABC3 presenter, Katlego Maboe who kept guests engaged throughout the day. “It was an absolute honour for me to participate in this event,” shared Rolene, who is also a qualified medical doctor. “As a woman, this cause sits very closely to my heart as breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer among women. It’s incredible to see awareness raised via an event of this magnitude.” Indeed, a great deal of emphasis was placed on
reminding guests and the public – both women and men, who are also affected by breast cancer – to follow early detection practices. Not only did the day succeed in raising much awareness about breast cancer, but it also created a platform whereby funds were donated to various organisations. For the first time in the event’s history, R100 per ticket sold for the Pink Food Truck Fair was donated to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. “This is no longer merely an event,” said Simone de Wet, Managing Director of Val de Vie Events. “It’s a movement. Looking at its far-reaching impact to date, we thought: Why stop at supporting the fight against breast cancer? The fact that CHOC is now also being touched by the positive ripple effect of this event is a great joy.”

Guests dressed to the nines in elegant yet understated fashion, perfect for polo In a culminating moment, Monique Fredericks, a breast cancer survivor who was hosted at the event by KFM 94.5, initiated the main polo match by throwing the ball onto the field between Team Cintron and Team Vodacom. Each chukka, umpired by Campbell Macnab and Rob Hampson, kept guests in suspense but ultimately victory went to Team Cintron who scored four impressive goals. Team Vodacom weren’t far behind, however, managing to score a close three goals in a “very competitive” game, as described by winning Captain, Leroux Hendriks. These sentiments were shared by Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director and Shareholder at Val de Vie Estate who said that, “The polo was very exciting! It was also a significant day as this was the biggest crowd that we’ve hosted to date for a polo exhibition match at Val de Vie. Our aim was to create an ‘authentic polo’ experience in every regard, and I definitely feel that we achieved this.” During the prizegiving ceremony, the title of Most Valuable Player was awarded to Jannie Steenkamp of Team Vodacom. The accolade for Best Playing Pony was given to Romania, owned by Joseph Bronn and played by Team Vodacom’s Captain, Tom de Bruin. Val de Vie’s White Team was also given recognition as the winners of the curtain-raiser played against Val de Vie’s Black Team. In the spirit of the event, the female players who participated in the day’s two games, including Neku Atawodi-Edun, Nigeria’s first professional female polo player, were given special acknowledgement.
Other prizes handed over included a trip aboard the Zambezi Queen which went to a thrilled guest, Itumeleng Langeni. The prize for best dressed gent went to Sedupe Ramokgopa, who sported a crisp monochromatic outfit, complete with a salmon blazer, perfectly suited to the occasion. Celebrated ‘Pad Na Jou Hart’ actress, Donnalee Roberts who wore an effortlessly chic striped ensemble was voted the best dressed lady of the day. “This was my first time at the Cintron Pink Polo. And wow, what a feast for the senses it was!” said Donnalee. Exquisite florals, stripes and polka dots took form in a number of feminine designs in a fashion show by ElricoZarr. The menswear range was equally striking, including uncomplicated garments in blues, reds and natural tones. A string of celebrities including Maps Maponyane, Minki van der Westhuizen, Africa Melane, Nico and Christi Panagio, Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, Liezel van der Westhuizen and Siv Ngesi to name a few likewise showcased stylish looks in tune with the atmosphere of the day.
‘The much-loved South African band, GoodLuck ended matters on a high note during the Pink Sunset Surprise as the sun began to spill soft shades of oranges and pinks across the sky, a fitting backdrop to the conclusion of this purpose-filled event.’ GRAPEVINE 35

TORPEDO SWIMRUN SERIES EXPANDS TO VAL DE VIE ESTATE The Torpedo SwimRun Series is growing, with the recent announcement that the newest event, Torpedo SwimRun Val de Vie Estate, will be happening on 3 February 2019 on our estate, and will draw both competitive athletes and beginner SwimRunners who want to try out the sport. Words by Torpedo SwimRun team
T
SwimRun is a relatively new sport that originated in Sweden and offers off-road and open-water adventure along coastal and inland waterways, with routes designed around the natural environment and with distances varying from race to race. Torpedo SwimRun is leading the way in developing the sport of swimrun in South Africa and are rolling out a series of these events for different levels of athletes. TORPEDO SWIMRUN VAL DE VIE ESTATE Former Olympic swimming gold medalist Ryk Neethling, Val de Vie Estate Marketing Director and Shareholder, is so taken with the sport that he entered the November 2018 Torpedo SwimRun Cape event, and is very happy to be hosting a Torpedo SwimRun on the estate next year: “At Val de Vie Estate we are promoting a healthy outdoor lifestyle and to that end we host trail runs, have developed more than 40km of mountain bike trails, host regular polo events as well as our summer markets, and so to add a Torpedo SwimRun event is a great fit for us,” he said.
Richard McMartin, co-founder of Torpedo SwimRun, said: “One of the reasons we are so thrilled about Val de Vie Estate as our next event, is that this one will make SwimRun so much more accessible to new participants: the swimming is in dams with the longest swim being 400 metre, and it is not as technical as Cape and Wild editions of SwimRun. We are also able to cater for a larger number of athletes. The longest run is 3 kilometres. With 2 kilometres of swimming in total, and 8 kilometres of total running, the whole race is 10 kilometres.”

CELEBRATING ONE YEAR IN THE VALLEY OF LIFE One year has passed since the opening of Camelot Spa Val de Vie Estate and we reflect on the spa’s achievements and offerings. Words by Camelot Spa
I
In less than a year of operation, Camelot Spa Val de Vie Estate has made waves in the industry as winner of the Best Day Spa category at the 2018 Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Awards; the most prestigious spa awards in South Africa. These prestigious awards acknowledge excellence and those who set the benchmark, in quality and innovation within the spa, health and wellness industry. Camelot Spa Val de Vie Estate is committed to offering exceptional service and treatment excellence and we pledge to maintain the high standards expected from us as an award winner. If you have not visited the spa yet, expect to experience the luxury and sophistication that Camelot Spas are renowned for, along with six luxurious treatment rooms, a nail and pedicure lounge and a hair salon. Facilities include a Rasul chamber; a traditional Arabian detoxifying cleansing ritual which involves a self-application of mineral-rich salt and mud to the skin while spending time in our mosaic-tiled steam room to relax. This softens the mud, encourages pores to open, toxins to be released and minerals to be absorbed, resulting in refreshed, smooth skin.
Our extensive spa menu represents a combination of massage therapies and beauty treatments, together with treatments and journeys for the face and body using Thalgo La Beauty Marine and CSpa Aroma Wellness products. Camelot Spa Val de Vie Estate is the perfect escape, be it to unwind and re-energize; take care of your beauty needs or to celebrate a special occasion with one of our spa experiences. In celebration, visit us during our birthday week from 10th 16th of December for a complimentary glass of bubbly with your treatment!
Camelot Val de Vie Estate is open 08:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Sunday. To make a booking, please contact 021 867 8001 or valdevie@camelotspa.co.za

E S TAT E
F
or the Val de Vie Estate gardener, our long Summer season takes on the form of windswept days, sweltering February afternoons and wondrous early mornings filled with nature’s delight. Summer in the garden should be a time when months of planning and planting come to fruition and reward you with a glorious bouquet. Alas, if the roses are in their vigorous prime, so too are the weeds and insects, while grass and hedges grow almost visibly. When no rain falls, as is the norm in the Western Cape during our Summer, keeping plants watered becomes a constant preoccupation. Looking back at the previous two seasons, we have to make a few mind shifts regarding the way we look at gardening. Water, or the lack thereof, has made us rethink its value and also carefully consider the type of plants we select for our gardens. It has become a scarce commodity and deserves more respect. Whatever Summer’s drawbacks, this is, indeed, the gardener’s most fulfilling season. For those gardeners that missed the golden planting time of Autumn/Winter and early Spring, all hope is not lost, and you
can still add new plants to your garden. Considering that these plants will have to be watered more often during our hot days, I would steer clear of adding any new Fynbos as these plants perform and settle better when planted in the cooler months. Nothing keeps you from adding lots of succulents and other hardy vygies and sowing those carrot, beet and tomato seeds. A few of my favourite hardy plants include: Aloe maculate, Crassula capitella, Echeveria sempervirens, Lampranthus aureus, Euphorbia tirucalli and Senecio ficoides (and the list goes on) As with any new planting, the addition of compost is a must and mulching must be incorporated. We add mulch to garden beds for a variety of reasons, most importantly because it prevents unnecessary moisture loss and keeps the soil cool and prevents excessive weed growth, and last but not least, it keeps your garden looking neat and tidy. There are so many options when it comes to mulching your garden beds: chipped stone, peach pips, bark, wood chips, straw, pebbles to name but a few. Enjoy what is left of the gardening year and remember to stop every now and then and smell the roses, and if you have a little bit of water to spare, reward your plants as they will return the favour when you least expect it.
‘At the heart of gardening there is a belief in the miraculous.’ Mirabel Osler
