Setting

As we anticipate the start of a new year, there’s no better way to reflect on and give thanks for the year just passed than with a table set for celebration. This time of the year, the best moments are shared with those we love, so gather your friends, family and neighbours, set your table al fresco style, pick some flowers from your garden (or make an occasion of it and visit Adene’s Farm Flowers on the Estate) and

the Table for 2025

create a feast worth remembering. Our delis have everything you need, from fresh baguettes to cured meats, cheeses, sweet treats, wine and other delicious accompaniments. Include the season’s bountiful produce by adding some fresh vegetables from the Wellness Farm to bring colour and vibrancy to your tablescape and, of course, the event wouldn’t be complete without a glass of Val de Vie Méthode Cap Classique

Cuveé to toast the promise of 2025. The clinking of glasses, the sound of bread breaking, the voices of those you hold dear – may it remind you that you are loved and have so much to be thankful for. Take time to be grateful for the year that has passed and, most importantly, make a toast to the adventures, successes and memories that are yet to come. At Val de Vie Estate, let’s prepare to embrace what’s to come – together.

Val de Vie Estate’s vibrant pincushions are in full bloom, welcoming residents and guests with cheerful bursts of red, orange and yellow. Over 850 fynbos plants, including pincushions, were recently purchased and planted in the communal areas on the Estate, further enhancing our rich biodiversity.

Staying Water-Safe this Summer

Whether you’re by the pool, at a lake, or near the river, water safety is essential for fun, memorable days. Keep these safety tips in mind to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer:

Designate a “Water Watcher”. Assign someone to watch children without distractions – no phones or other tasks. If a child goes missing, check the pool first.

Install Barriers. Ensure pools are fenced with self-closing gates.

Learn CPR. It’s a life-saving skill.

Swim Lessons for Kids. Enrol children in swimming lessons early to help prevent accidents around the water.

Swimming in the dams and lakes on Val de Vie Estate is not permitted.

Avoid Pool Drains. Steer clear of drains and outlets to prevent suction hazards.

Walk, Don’t Run. Prevent slips and injuries by walking near pools.

Avoid Alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment – don’t drink before or during swimming or when supervising others.

No Diving. Avoid diving into pools; shallow water can cause serious injuries.

Roadworks Update

On the R45 between Franschhoek and Simondium, day closures and 24-hour Stop/Go closures will continue until 12 December 2024.

The Stop/Go operations will resume between the Berg River Gate and Simondium from January to April 2025. Please be prepared for potential delays during this period. Roadworks will continue through 2025 and into early 2026.

Please drive cautiously through construction areas and note that dates are estimates and may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Young Equestrian Dreams taking Flight

What started as a daily walk down to the stables a few years ago to say hello to the horses eventually ignited a sense of curiosity in young Val de Vie Estate resident Chardonnay Viljoen to start horse riding lessons. Despite never having been on a horse, Chardonnay was hooked from the moment she climbed into the saddle at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club.

Soon after Chardonnay started horse riding lessons at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club, she also joined the Alpha Equestrian Centre in Simondium, where she has been refining her skills and cultivating her talent even further.

This year, at the age of 14, Chardonnay made her mark at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) National Championships. Representing the Western Cape with her horse

Montana ZEC from the Alpha Equestrian Centre, she competed in eight challenging classes. Her hard work and dedication paid off, as she secured an impressive first place in in-hand utility, a second place in dressage and a commendable fourth place in showjumping.

Only 11 riders represented the Western Cape at the SANESA National Championships. Overall, the Western Cape did very well; they achieved first place in show jumping and second place in dressage. Chardonnay’s journey is a testament to her talent and perseverance. She attributes much of her success to the solid foundation laid by the Val de Vie Equestrian Club, for which she will always be grateful. Interested in riding lessons? Email instructor1@valdevie.co.za or call 071 365 6775 to book your lesson at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club today.

Wellness Farm Market Magic

Is there anything better than strolling through a lively market on a bright spring day, enjoying freshly baked treats and refreshing drinks? On Saturday 5 October Val de Vie Estate residents gathered at the Wellness Farm to enjoy precisely this. Children delighted in the jumping castle, enjoyed tractor rides and cycled through the bike park. At the same time, their parents joined Environmental Officer Simon Allen for a relaxed walk and talk and bought fresh produce straight from the farm.

Various stalls added to the day, offering a diverse range of experiences. From cooling refreshments to delicious meals and beautiful plants to brighten homes and gardens. The Val de Vie Foundation also shared information on their impactful community initiative of raising funds to purchase vegetables from the Wellness Farm that are donated to the Foundation’s beneficiaries. It was the perfect way to celebrate the day. We thank all the vendors, market-goers and everyone else who made this day possible.

LIVE THE LIFE YOU IMAGINE

Extinction is Forever

The 40-hectare biodiversity corridor that runs from the upper boundary of the Estate to the Berg River is an important protected area, not only for the Estate itself but for the Cape Floral Kingdom as a whole. Of the seven floral kingdoms across the world, the Cape Floral Kingdom is the most biodiverse for its size; however, agriculture, human expansion and degradation due to over-burning means that vast areas of previously pristine fynbos and renosterveld are gone forever, along with their many species of plants.

Renosterveld refers to a unique type of vegetation found in South Africa, primarily in the Western Cape. Renosterveld is part of the Cape Floristic Region and is known for its high biodiversity, including many endemic plant species. The local vegetation type, Swartland Alluvium Renosterveld, has been decimated by 95% with only small, unlinked patches remaining. This is where biodiversity corridors such as those on Val de Vie Estate come into their own, not only protecting vulnerable and endangered species of plants but also giving room for mammals, birds and other creatures to move between areas, ensuring their survival and genetic diversity.

The ecological status of an organism is determined within the framework set by international regulatory bodies:

Extinct (EX): A species is Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. Species should be classified as Extinct only once exhaustive surveys throughout the species’ known range have failed to record an individual.

Extinct in the Wild (EW): A species is Extinct in the Wild when it is known to survive only in cultivation or as a naturalised population (or populations) well outside the past range.

Regionally Extinct (RE): A species is Regionally Extinct when it is extinct within the region assessed (in this case South Africa), but wild populations can still be found in areas outside the region.

Critically Endangered, Possibly Extinct (CR PE): Possibly Extinct is a unique tag associated with the category Critically Endangered, indicating species that are highly likely to be extinct, but the exhaustive surveys required for classifying the species as Extinct have not yet been completed. A small chance remains that such species may still be rediscovered.

Critically Endangered (CR): A species is Critically Endangered when the best available evidence indicates that it meets at least one of the five IUCN criteria for Critically Endangered, indicating that the species faces an extremely high risk of extinction.

Endangered (EN): A species is Endangered when the best available evidence indicates that it meets at least one of the five IUCN criteria for Endangered, indicating that the species faces a very high risk of extinction.

Near Endangered (NE): This status serves as a warning that, while the species is not immediately at risk of extinction, it is vulnerable to future threats and may require conservation measures to prevent further decline.

Vulnerable (VU): A species is Vulnerable when the best available evidence indicates that it meets at least one of the five IUCN criteria for Vulnerable, indicating that the species is facing a high risk of extinction.

Near Threatened (NT): A species is Near Threatened when available evidence shows that if present trends continue, the organism will become Vulnerable and is, therefore, likely to become at risk of extinction in the near future.

Rare: A species is Rare when the numbers have always been low.

Presently, a study is underway on Val de Vie Estate to discover how many species of plants are in our natural and low-maintenance areas. This is a difficult task given that some only appear with winter rains or after a burn, so it may take years for the exact number to be worked out; however, to date, 28 species of plants have been found in the corridor that are on the Red List, they are as follows:

• Leucadendron lanigerum – Endangered

• Erica alexandri – Critically Endangered

• Protea scorzonerifolia – Vunerable

• Leucodendron corymbosum – Near Threatened

• Hessea cinnamomea – Endangered

• Lachenalia contaminate – Near Threatened

• Babiana angustifolia – Near Threatened

• Babiana nana – Endangered

• Babiana nervosa – Near Threatened

• Babiana vilosula – Near Threatened

• Moraea tricolor – Endangered

• Hesperantha radiata – Near Threatened

• Lampranthus glaucus – Near Threatened

• Lampranthus leptaleon – Endangered

• Lampranthus reptans – Near Threatened

• Lampranthus spiniformis – Vulnerable

• Ruschia diversifolia – Vulnerable

• Metalasia pulchella – Near Threatened

• Silene burchelli – Near Threatened

• Gnida penicilliata – Near Threatened

• Lachnaea capitata – Vulnerable

• Erica cerinthoides – Near Endangered

• Asparagus lignosus – Near Threatened

• Erodium moschatum – Near Endangered

• Leucodendron flexosum – Critically Endangered

• Protea burchellii – Vulnerable

• Diastella proteoides – Endangered

• Muraltia thunbergii – Near Threatened

From the above, it can be seen that the Val de Vie Estate biodiversity corridor is an important area within our landscape and needs protection to ensure that these plants and other organisms are present for future generations to enjoy.

Since 2008, Kinder Ark is fortunate to be a cherished part of the Paarl community, dedicated to early childhood education and simply bringing and receiving joy every day.

16 years later, we celebrate yet another bunch of Graduates venturing into a new season. Almost like spring, they have the chance to start on a blank slate. Like timid little green leaves, they wait with anticipation to grow into lush green trees. Their souls, delicate as blossoms, will, in time, grow into stunning fruit. Have we equipped them well? What do they really need to know? Their ABCs and 123s are highly valued and believe us, this is an extraordinarily smart group of students, but did we not get lost in achievements, running like the hamster on its wheel?

Let us renew our thoughts, goals and perceptions of success when it comes to our youth. Let us help them to remember who they are and what their purpose in the circle of life is. Let us encourage them to have supersonic sight and hearing when lending a helping hand. Let us engrave in their souls: “In a world where you can be anything, choose to be kind!”

Let us allow them to blossom where they are planted

Hazards in Our Gardens

Most of us consider gardens and landscaped areas a haven; however, it must be remembered that these are not always designed with small children in mind. Despite close supervision, incidents of plant poisoning can occur.

Mushrooms and Toadstools

Death Caps and Red and White Fly Agaric Most poisonous species, like death caps (Amanita phalloides) and the red and white fly agaric (Amanita muscaria), are found in forests rather than backyards. However, it is worth clearing all mushrooms or toadstools from your garden until your child is old enough to know not to touch and eat them. If ingested, poisonous mushrooms can cause nausea, flushing, vomiting, diarrhoea and even death.

Garden Trees

Syringa Tree Ingestion of the ripe Syringa tree (Erythrina spp.) berries is common in children and although rare, nausea and diarrhoea can develop.

The Coral tree The Coral Trees’ pretty red and black seeds contain toxins that can be dangerous if ingested. Eating even a tiny amount can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Common Garden Flowers

Nightshade Although the Nightshade (Solanum) family includes tomatoes and potatoes, it does contain garden species that can be toxic. The colourful berries could be confused for tomatoes by children and have been found to cause livestock and pet poisoning.

Tobacco species Tobacco species (Nicotiana spp.) contain nicotine and anabasine, which is fatal when eaten.

Lilies The lily family includes the arum (Zantedeschia), clivia (Clivia miniata) and belladonnas (Amaryllis belladonna). Consuming most lily species can send people to the hospital with symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, rashes and diarrhoea and if left untreated, can be lethal.

Euphorbia Genus The sap from the Euphorbia genus—common plants known as spurge or milkweed—can cause severe pain. The sap can also injure the eyes, although this is rare. This genus includes poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), a popular Christmas plant.

Foxglove If eaten, Foxglove’s (Digitalis purpurea) bell-shaped blooms could cause heart problems.

Wistaria Thankfully, this common vine of the wistaria (Wisteria spp.) rarely harms humans, but the seed pods are toxic to dogs, cats and horses.

Hydrangea These popular plants contain cyanide, but pets and humans need to ingest quite a bit of these flowers for the effects to be fatal.

Oleander Eating only a small part of Oleander (Nerium oleander) can be fatal. Symptoms of poisoning include drowsiness, slowed heart rate and shaking.

Rhododendron and Azalea The entire plant (Rhododendron spp.) is highly toxic. Ingesting a flower, stem or leaf could lead to abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, paralysis, coma and even death.

Vegetable Garden Plants

Cape Gooseberry Plant While the ripe fruit of the Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) is a popular fruit to eat fresh or use for jam, the leaves and immature fruit of this plant may be toxic.

Rhubard Leaves Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) stems make excellent jams and tarts but don’t use their leaves. Eating too much of it will shut down the kidneys, occasionally proving fatal.

Common weeds

Castor oil bush The seeds of the castor oil bush contain one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known to man. Just one seed can kill a child, as the toxic protein ricin can cause severe dehydration from vomiting and diarrhoea.

Thorn Apple Datura, called thorn apple, malpitte or stinkblaar, is a common weed with distinctive trumpet-shaped flowers and spiny seedpods. It is hazardous; when ingested or inhaled, it can lead to nausea, vomiting and hallucinations.

Lantana Lantana, another common weed, has colourful flowers and shiny black berries that are attractive but poisonous if eaten by children or pets.

Stinging nettle Just touching the leaves or stems of a stinging nettle leads to a burning sensation as the hairs of this plant inject formic acid into the skin, causing painful rashes.

Systemic plant poisoning is rare because small amounts are usually ingested. Supervising young children is the best way to avoid danger in the garden.

Safety Tips

• Get familiar with poisonous or dangerous plants.

• Avoid growing hazardous plants in your garden. If they’re already in your garden, fence them off.

• Supervise children in the garden and public parks and keep them away from dangerous plants.

If you don’t know whether the plants in your garden are safe, ask your local nursery for advice.

Always have emergency numbers available just in case.

A Marathon, Not a Sprint

A MESSAGE FROM BRENTHURST WEALTH

The difference between a sprint and a marathon is mindset. A sprint is about maximum effort over a short distance, while a marathon demands a sustainable pace over a long stretch. Similarly, adopting a longterm, steady approach is crucial for investing and retirement planning success.

Setting the pace early

Just as marathon runners must pace themselves from the start, investors in South Africa should set a consistent, manageable savings and investment strategy as early as possible. This allows you to take full advantage of compound interest, where your investments generate returns on the principal amount and accumulated interest over time.

Consistency through automation

Seasoned marathon runners know that consistent training over time is the key to building strength and endurance. Likewise, the power of consistent, automated investing cannot be overstated. Automating your investments ensures that you regularly put money to work, helps you stay on track and prevents you from trying to time the market, which is often a losing game.

The importance of tax efficiency: Reducing the drag

Just as a runner minimises resistance to conserve energy, an investor should aim to reduce tax liabilities to maximise returns. Contributing to a retirement annuity and setting up a tax-free savings account are great options to include in an investment plan.

Adaptability: Adjusting for changing conditions Runners may need to adapt to changing weather or

terrain in a marathon. Similarly, retirement planning and investment strategies must be adjusted over time.

Finishing strong: The retirement payoff

The ultimate reward for a marathon runner is to cross the finish line; for investors, it is achieving a comfortable, financially secure retirement.

Just as it can help to have a coach to push you, a financial advisor can also ensure you finish the race.

This Berg-Breede River whitefish (Barbus andrewi), known as the Witvis, is endemic to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, meaning it’s found nowhere else in the world.

They are often recognised by their silvery, sleek bodies, which allow them to blend into the flowing river waters and avoid predators.

These fish have a varied diet, feeding on small invertebrates, plant matter and algae. They play an essential role in controlling algae growth in their habitats.

The Witvis is closely related to both Redfins and Yellowfish.

They breed in the summer. The eggs are laid in flowing water and hatch after about five days. A good-sized adult female Witvis produces around 100 000 eggs.

The Wonder of the Witvis

The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the six plant kingdoms on earth. This area not only hosts an incredible collection of native fynbos plants but also several unique native freshwater fish species like the Witvis. The Witvis is a large freshwater fish species native to the Berg and Breede River systems in South Africa. Unfortunately, the species was declared extinct in the Berg River in the1990s and numbers in the Breede River are in decline. Invasive fish species such as the Smallmouth Bass reduced the numbers by direct predation and competition for food.

As a result, the Witvis is listed as endangered and is now the subject of an intensive programme by the local Fresh Water Research Centre to return them to the Berg River system. Besides being an essential part of the river ecosystem, the Witvis is also a sought-after angling fish, which means the reintroduction will realise economic as well as ecological benefits.

This programme, in which Val de Vie Estate took part, started last year with a survey of the Berg River; the results showed that between Franschhoek and Paarl, the habitat has improved and that the Bass threat has reduced. This indicates that re-establishing the Witvis is now feasible along this section of the river.

By supporting local conservation efforts, we can help ensure that the Witvis continues to swim through South Africa’s rivers for generations to come.

Navigating the Currents with Purpose

On the weekend of the 26th and 27th of October, a team of twelve Masters water polo players, including Val de Vie Estate resident Ray McCallum, braved the icy waters between Robben Island and Bloubergstrand as a heartfelt tribute to their teammates and friends who have been battling cancer in the past year.

Ray, who had recently celebrated his 74th birthday on 23 October, was determined to undertake the swim despite his ongoing cancer treatment. He trained rigorously, hoping to inspire others and show them the power of determination.

Not only was the swim in aid of those close to him also battling cancer, it raised essential funds for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Fund, specifically benefitting their Child Protection Project.

Each swimmer was committed to making a difference and they inspired many people to contribute to this meaningful cause. Donations were made directly to the trust and an impressive R130 000 was raised.

Ray’s attempt was particularly inspiring; although hypothermia from the 10-12°C waters forced him to stop after 6,2km, he remained optimistic, calling himself a “lucky fish”.

The FTC Robben Island Swim exemplifies the power of perseverance and collective action. Ray and his team’s commitment reminds us of the impact we can have when we come together for a meaningful cause. Val de Vie Estate residents are encouraged to support the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust.

Connecting Through Our Community Tour

On a Friday morning in November Val de Vie Estate residents had the privilege of visiting three of the Val de Vie Foundation’s primary beneficiaries on a guided community tour. The beneficiaries included Monte Christo Miqlat (MCM), Rusthof Old Age Home and Milani Daycare Centre for Children, an extension of the Drakenstein Association for People with Disabilities. The Val de Vie Foundation’s implementation partner, Nation Builder, also joined the tour.

These three remarkable organisations make a significant, positive impact on the lives of their beneficiaries. MCM, based at the Tiffany’s Centre, played a critical role in ending the youth gangs that plagued the community. They are a Christian-based organisation with a deeply rooted commitment to community transformation. Their three focus areas – education, nutrition and skills development, help to ensure that children in their early childhood development programme receive nutritious meals and mental stimulation.

Rusthof Old Age Home holds a special place in the heart of the Val de Vie Foundation. It provides care for 104 elderly residents, many of whom are referred due to neglect or abuse. Under the management of qualified nurse Alvira Kleynhans, residents are placed in different sections based on their mobility and are monitored by carers and nurses. Rusthof is facing significant challenges, including a critical shortage of adult diapers, as they only receive partial assistance from the government that does not cover such items.

The day’s last stop was the Milani Daycare for Children. The Centre cares for 40 children with disabilities between two and 18 years old. Due to many cultural barriers and a lack of knowledge, these children are often neglected at home by parents or guardians who do not know how to care for them properly. The Centre ensures that their clients are cared for in a safe environment, where they receive two meals a day, transport to Wellington, Franschhoek and Paarl, as well as daily therapy.

The Val de Vie Foundation believes in impact beyond funding. It’s about being part of the journey towards sustainable social transformation in vulnerable communities. In the spirit of the Dalai Lama’s call to act on compassion, Lorraine Hadfield, Advisor to the Val de Vie Foundation, echoed this sentiment by saying, “You can either cry about it, or you can decide to do something about it.” The Val de Vie Foundation has reached nearly 50 000 beneficiaries since its establishment in 2015, highlighting its constant dedication to driving social transformation.

The day was filled with inspirational and heartwarming interactions and residents were overwhelmed with compassion and a desire to assist where needed. As the tour concluded, it was clear that this experience profoundly impacted all who joined. The Val de Vie Foundation encourages more Val de Vie Estate residents to join them on future community tours to witness firsthand the transformative work being done in the surrounding communities.

“The Community Tour was again an incredibly humbling experience. The work these organisations and their staff do on a daily basis, sometimes in challenging circumstances, serves as an inspiration to us all to put our own hands up and give back to our community where we can.”

A Pioneering Step for Sustainable Tourism Engagement

“It is in tourism that nature and humanity meet most equitably and profitably.” - Nelson Mandela

Conscious Tourism is an initiative that promotes more mindful interactions between local communities, travellers and the tourism industry. Its numerous benefits attract a growing market seeking to engage with the community while creating jobs and opportunities for local businesses.

“We were privileged to support our first Conscious Tourism Event at the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy (FHA). This type of interaction with our community is unparalleled. There is nothing like what I witnessed on Saturday evening and it underscored the value of supporting a sustainable NPO,” says Ruth McCourt, CEO of Franschhoek Wine Valley.

Building a Powerful Legacy

Saturday 2 November marked the launch of an auspicious milestone for the PaarlFranschhoek Valley. In a meaningful collaboration, the Val de Vie Foundation, FHA, LindaPaige and Franschhoek Wine Valley created a significant and authentic experience for international visitors.

Sixteen delegates from the USA and Australia, part of the LindaPaige tour, were treated to an unforgettable day starting with a wine tasting at Haute Cabrière and dinner under the stars in the beautiful Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, cooked by the intrepid delegates themselves.

Real Impact and Longevity

The consensus from all who attended the event was that this mindful interaction with the community made the visit to South Africa more real. “We absolutely loved meeting everyone from the Val de Vie Foundation, the FHA and all the private donors and partners leading the way with an excellent concept that has real impact and longevity,” said the delegates.

How it All Came Together

The event’s success was made possible by the support of companies dedicated to uplifting the Valley. The Val de Vie Foundation is deeply grateful to these companies who gave so generously, believed in them and without whom they could not have made such a profitable success for FHA. A special thanks to:

• Haute Cabrière, which has supported the FHA since its inception, employs many of its graduates and provided the Academy with a new home in 2023. They contributed to the Conscious Tourism initiative as they saw the significant benefit to the Valley as a whole.

• Philip Janse van Rensburg, Vagabond Stretch Tents owner, who was excited to be part of the Conscious Tourism pilot programme, supported the initiative and contributed to a network that promotes entrepreneurship and the local hospitality sector.

• Chef Ryan Shell, owner of Oku, Eleven and Yama Sushi in Franschhoek, who led the team in developing the recipes, prepared the ingredients at his restaurant and, in his calm manner, guided the intrepid cooks in preparing a feast-to-table experience for 25 guests.

• Simone de Wet and Liza-Marie du Plessis of Appointed Events, who generously donated their time to help organise the décor for the event and provided the special treats of unique South African biscuits and bookmarks. Appointed Events consists of a creative team that carefully curates personable turnkey project management solutions using their own Creative Coordinators and Event Coordinators. They also brought in Grand Room Design (GRD), specialists in luxury event design and rentals, whose high-end pieces created an unforgettable dining setting.

Conscious Tourism

A Special Initiative

Nothing was left to chance, from the exquisite wine to the carefully curated recipes, cookbooks and music entertainment.

As Brian Moor from FHA remarked, “What a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of the Academy to international tourists. The exposure and experience the students gained through interacting with and assisting the participants was invaluable.”

The Val de Vie Foundation is proud to lead this groundbreaking and sustainable initiative. It is currently planning more themed events with Franschhoek Wine Valley, bringing in not only the FHA but also other NGOs that will benefit from attracting these mindful tourists.

As resident and business owner Linda Potgieter put it, “We absolutely loved meeting everyone, taste testing beautiful Haute Cabrière wines, cooking alongside Chef Ryan and the students, being treated to awesome music by Uncorked and eating truly South African Frood that we had made.”

A powerful legacy was born on 2 November 2024.
