In the Company of Horses
The 2024/2025 polo season on Val de Vie Estate may have drawn to a close, yet horses continue to be a part of our daily lives. It’s not uncommon to find yourself in a delightful ‘traffic jam’ as horses are led from their stables to the paddocks in the early morning, their neighs heard softly in the background. On calm autumn afternoons, they can be seen carrying riders through the L’Huguenot vineyards or trotting gracefully around the polo fields. Others spend their days in the Val de Vie Equestrian Club arena, teaching equestrians not only how to handle and ride them but also how to care for them.
Their presence does more than add to the beauty of our Estate; they also instil a sense of peace with their gentle natures. Horses act as a bridge to the great outdoors, enriching our connection with the natural world. Recent research has shown how horses can recognise and remember human facial expressions, discerning between positive and negative emotions. They also communicate their feelings and social dynamics through subtle microexpressions. These findings highlight horses’ acute sensitivity to human emotional states, allowing them to adjust their behaviour in response to the intentions
they perceive from us. Within the pages of this edition, Environmental Officer Simon Allen offers a fascinating look at the wild horses that early European explorers encountered when they first arrived in South Africa. Living alongside these majestic animals at Val de Vie Estate, we find ourselves in good company, continuously deepening our understanding and appreciation. Their role extends beyond recreation and sport; they are integral to our community, enhancing our daily experiences and connecting us more deeply with nature and ourselves.

A New Era of Security
Security at Val de Vie Estate goes beyond a service – it’s the cornerstone of what makes living here so reassuring. This commitment to a safe and secure lifestyle was reaffirmed at the Security Town Hall Meeting on Thursday 6 March 2025, where residents came together to learn more about the ongoing improvements to the Estate’s security measures.
The evening was led by Riaan Crafford, Chairperson of the Security Committee, who outlined the strategic security focus for 2025, reinforcing a proactive approach to protect the Estate. Marius Herselman, Head of Risk and Security, presented a comprehensive security overview, highlighting key statistics and the importance of “Protecting People, Preserving Assets.”
A significant highlight of the evening was the introduction of Bidvest Protea Coin as the new security provider. Costa Diavastos, CEO of Bidvest Protea Coin, shared the company’s vision, expertise and cutting-edge innovations, offering a glimpse into how enhanced rapidresponse strategies and state-of-the-art technology will redefine safety within our Estate. Following this, Waal de Waal, COO of Bidvest Protea Coin, took centre stage with an impressive live demonstration.

Residents watched as the airwing team conducted helicopter and drone flyovers, showcasing real-time surveillance capabilities. The K9 unit impressed with narcotics detection and suspect apprehension, while the perimeter security demonstration highlighted the effective coordination of drones, K9 teams and advanced surveillance technology. These highly coordinated

exercises, fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority and the HOA, provided a firsthand experience of the advanced security measures protecting the Estate.
The Town Hall Meeting reinforced a shared commitment to safety, ensuring that Val de Vie Estate remains at the forefront of secure, luxury living.

Polo, Passion, Purpose
The 13th annual Pink Polo on Saturday 15 March 2025 was an unforgettable fiesta. While the event featured riveting polo matches, lively entertainment by RAAF and world-class hospitality, set against the beautiful Cape Winelands backdrop, its true purpose was to raise funds and awareness for CANSA Paarl through the Val de Vie Foundation.
During the event, Ryk Neethling, Marketing & Brand Director of the Val de Vie Group, handed over a cheque for R200 000 to CANSA Paarl representative and cancer survivor Marjorie Herandien. This contribution will help make a difference in supporting cancer research, screening and community outreach.
On the field, Team Kevin’s Banditos triumphed over the OIG Vikings in the main polo match, while the Pink Team secured victory over the Blue Team in the Pink Plate Ladies Polo Match.
A huge thank you to everyone who came out to show their support. We’d also like to give a special shoutout to the incredible partners who helped bring the day to life: Stella Artois, Lexus, Ruhens South Africa, YOCO, La Motte, Beyers, Las Paletas, Flossy & Frosé, Monarch Coffee Cartel, RS Sunglasses, Heyday, CapeTalk and KFM.
Three cheers for the players, ponies, sponsors and supporters. We look forward to welcoming you again in 2026 for the 14th annual Pink Polo.

In the Saddle with Chloé
Chloé Pires’ equestrian journey began at seven, though she admits she was initially terrified of riding horses. Her fear quickly transformed into a deep love for these majestic animals. By 16, she was already working at a riding yard, teaching lessons and even running the yard while the manager was on maternity leave.
Chloé specialises in dressage and showjumping and loves how they complement each other. “Dressage is like dancing with the horse, refining communication and precision, while showjumping brings an exhilarating rush, almost like flying.” Each discipline’s unique challenges and excitement make it hard for Chloé to pick a favourite.
After teaching in Johannesburg, Chloé recently moved to the Western Cape to join the Val de Vie Equestrian Club. “The opportunity to combine my love for horses and teaching in such a beautiful and professional environment is incredibly exciting,” she says.
Her advice for every rider is: “Have fun and enjoy the ride. Winning isn’t just about the ribbons – it’s about the connection with your horse and the little improvements you make each day. Every ride is a step forward, and that’s something worth celebrating.”

The Langes Ride into History
Some moments in sport transcend victory and symbolise dedication, legacy and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. This year, the Cape Town Cycle Tour delivered one of those moments when Tyler Lange raced to victory, making history alongside his father, Malcolm Lange, a three-time event winner. Together, they became the first father-son duo to win the world’s largest individually timed cycling event. Cycling is a way of life for the Lange family, who call Val de Vie Estate home. Malcolm’s storied career as one of South Africa’s most successful cyclists laid the foundation for Tyler. Tyler’s rise to prominence is a testament to his own talent, discipline and love for the sport.
Was cycling Tyler’s destiny? “I never felt pressure to become a cyclist,” Tyler reflects. “My dad encouraged me to try different sports and find my passion. But from as early as I can remember, I was drawn to cycling – the speed, the challenge and the freedom.” Malcolm adds: “I knew how tough cycling is, how many sacrifices it demands. I wanted him to find his way. In the end, he chose cycling and cycling chose him.”
Tyler’s passion for the sport quickly turned into purpose as he threw himself into the hard work and sacrifices it takes. “People don’t see the hours of training, the early mornings, the discipline it takes to compete at this level,” he explains. “While others are on holiday, I’m on the bike. It’s a sport that demands everything from you.”
The hard work paid off on Sunday 9 March 2025 when Tyler crossed the finish line in first place, securing a historic and record-breaking victory. “With 300 metres to go, we caught a small group and I knew I had a real shot,” he recalls. “The final sprint is pure instinct, split-second decisions and absolute focus. It’s high-speed, high-risk and completely exhilarating.”
His first thought after winning? “Where is my family? Where is my dad?” Malcolm was still on the road, riding in his 21st Cape Town Cycle Tour. He only heard the news when a spectator on Suikerbossie shouted, “Your boy won!” Disbelief turned into overwhelming pride. “I had to ask him three times if he was sure,” Malcolm laughs. “I know how hard Tyler works and seeing that effort turn into victory was an emotional

moment I’ll never forget.” Watching his son forge his path in the sport is truly special for Malcolm. “We’re very different riders,” he says. “Tyler is calm and calculated. It’s a pleasure to watch him race.”
The world now recognises Tyler as a rising star and his sights are set on international racing, with Europe as his next primary goal. “Winning the Cape Town Cycle Tour is incredible, but my dream is to race at the highest level,” he says. His ultimate ambition? Milan-San Remo is a legendary 289km classic race in Italy, which he believes suits his racing style. Both Malcolm and Tyler’s journeys are rooted in hard work, dedication and following your passion. The Estate celebrates the historic win of this father-son duo.

Harvest Season in the Valley
AN UPDATE ON THE 2025 HARVEST FROM RENIER VAN DEVENTER, HEAD WINEMAKER AT L’HUGUENOT VINEYARDS.
The 2025 harvest at L’Huguenot Vineyards is unfolding with great promise despite starting about ten days later than last year. Early indications suggest an exceptional season, particularly for white grape varieties. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are showing vibrant flavours in the vineyards, hinting at a standout vintage. While quality is excellent, yields are slightly lower again this year – especially for Chenin Blanc –continuing the trend of lighter harvests for white varieties.
“So far, we’re seeing outstanding quality with great flavours, but volumes remain on the lower side,” says L’Huguenot Vineyards’ Head Winemaker, Renier van Deventer. “The Sauvignon Blanc is looking particularly strong and we’re optimistic about what’s to come.”
Early autumn is one of the most beautiful times in the Valley of Life, with harvest activities in full swing and a laid-back, joyful energy in the air. Residents are invited to L’Huguenot Vineyards’ weekly UNwine’d Fridays – an opportunity to ease into the weekend and sip, savour and soak in the sunset. Alternatively, relax under the lush trees on L’Huguenot Vineyards’ scenic lawns while enjoying delicious bites from the ViLLAGE deli. While you are there, celebrate the joys of the harvest season with a glass of your favourite Sauvignon Blanc as you take in the gorgeous views of the Simonsberg Mountains – because every harvest deserves a toast.

WINE OF THE MONTH
THE PERFECT HOST 2022
This Chenin Blanc tells the story of old Paarl bush vines, deeply rooted in shale soils and packed with intensity. Half the grapes are whole-bunch pressed, the rest destemmed, creating a beautifully textured wine. Fermentation is split – half in steel tanks for freshness, the other half in French oak barrels for richness – before maturing for 10 months into a layered masterpiece. Expect ripe peach, fresh apricot and pineapple wrapped in gentle oak-spiced warmth with a lively citrus-like acidity that keeps it fresh. This full-bodied Chenin Blanc is best enjoyed with great company – paired with pork belly, butter chicken or apricot-glazed snoek on the braai.
HORSE SAFETY GUIDELINES
KEEP OUT OF THE STABLES
All stables are private property and unauthorised entry is not allowed. Horses are large animals and are unpredictable, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries to both humans and horses.
BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED PADDOCKS
Fences inside some paddocks are electrified to ensure horses remain secure. Avoid contact and proximity to these paddocks.
RESPECT HORSES' SENSITIVITY
To avoid startling and agitating horses, refrain from any interaction without permission. Take pictures only from a safe distance, without trespassing restricted areas.
KEEP DOGS AWAY FROM HORSES
Dogs must remain leashed, except in dedicated dog parks. Keep a safe distance from horses while walking your dog to prevent startling them. Horses may respond aggressively to protect themselves against your dog.
BE CONSIDERATE WHEN PASSING
When walking or running near horses, maintain a safe distance and avoid sudden movement or noises that may startle or intimidate them. Pass with ample space and be visible before approaching.
OBSERVE HORSE CROSSINGS
Horses have right of way. At a horse crossing, stop at the red light and allow them to pass safely.
NO ENTRY AT PADDOCKS
Paddocks are strictly o -limits. Horses may kick, bite and accidentally trample a small child. Beware of potential injuries should they step on your foot.
FEEDING HORSES IS PROHIBITED
Certain foods can induce illnesses such as laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, and colic, requiring medical intervention. Beware of accidental bites to fingers or hands.
BICYCLE CAUTION
Be aware when cycling near horses. Sudden bike appearances can startle them, provoking fear-driven responses. Reduce speed, ensure visibility, and pass at a safe distance when encountering horses.
NO PETTING
Exercise caution when approaching a mare and her foal, as she may display aggression. Beware of foals kicking and accidentally biting.
Razzle Dazzle Horses
Early European explorers to South Africa encountered the local wild horses: the Cape Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra zebra), the Quagga (Equus quagga quagga) and the Plains Zebras (Equus quagga burchellii and chapmanii). To differentiate between these animals, the explorers seem to have used the terms “Wilde Paard” for the Mountain Zebra, “Sebra” for the Plains Zebra and the “Quagga” retained its original, onomatopoeic Khoekhoe name. This differentiation can still be found in historic local place names such as Paardeberg, Paardekraal and Quaggasfontein.
Zebras are actual horses, as their genus epithet indicates, and contrary to popular belief, they have been domesticated to pull wagons and coaches, albeit with difficulty. For example, the Zeederberg Coach Company once had a team of zebras pulling one of their stagecoaches.
Standing at 13,5 hands high, zebras are the size of ponies. However, unlike domestic horses and ponies, zebras have not undergone 2 000 years of domestication, strengthening their backs and legs. As a result, they do not make good riding ponies. As wild animals, zebras are prone to aggression as they fight for dominance within their social groups and against potential threats, making them unsuitable companions.

Historically, the Swartland area of the Cape was home to two zebra species. The Cape Mountain Zebra is the smallest and the most geographically restricted of all existing zebra species. This zebra has historically inhabited the mountainous regions of the Western and Eastern Cape. Although once nearly driven to extinction, conservation efforts have helped increase the population, but it is still classified as vulnerable. Visually, it has narrower stripes and lacks the brownish “shadow stripes” found in the Plains Zebra. Its stripes continue down to the hooves, but not on the belly, which is white.
The Quagga was distinguished from other zebras by its limited pattern of primarily brown and white stripes, mainly on the front part of the body. Unfortunately, the Quagga was extensively hunted and became extinct in the wild by 1878. The last captive specimen died in Amsterdam on 12 August 1883.
The most common of the zebra species, the Plains Zebra, is a subspecies of the Quagga, with more defined striping. Historically, it was only found north of the Gariep River but has since been translocated to farms and reserves across the country. While often referred to as the Burchell’s Zebra, this is inaccurate, as the Burchell’s strain is now extinct.
Why, unlike other horses, do zebras have stripes?
The stripes act as a barcode. Each zebra’s striping pattern is unique to the individual and may act as a recognition pattern.
The stripes help break up the zebra’s outlines in a herd. When attacked by predators, zebras group together, blending their stripes. This confuses predators, as they tend to target individual animals.
The stripes help camouflage the animals under low-light conditions when predators are most active.
The striping is a deterrent to biting flies as most biting flies in Africa prefer large dark animals to striped ones. Possibly, the Quagga had fewer stripes as the Cape region had fewer biting flies.
When exposed to heat, the alternately black and white bars create varied air currents over the skin, perhaps acting as a natural built-in air-conditioner.

In the Company of Horses, There is Love, Friendship and Kindness
Charlie Mackesy’s beloved book, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse”, beautifully illustrates how time spent with horses reminds everyone of love, friendship and kindness. For Madri Steyn, owner of Kinder Ark, the most profound part of the story – and the message she aims to instil in the children – is when The Boy asks The Horse for advice and he replies: “Don’t measure how valuable you are by the way you are treated. Always remember you matter, you’re important and you are loved, and you bring to this world, things no one else can”.
At Kinder Ark, teachers are reminded daily to nurture individualism within the educational system. In a structured learning environment, they ensure every child feels seen, heard and valued for who they are.
Madri says: “We seek to understand children’s behaviour and are mesmerised by the miracle of Creation. With our cups overflowing, we have the privilege to soak up the beauty of our surroundings, but more so, we are grateful that the youth of this Estate can touch our souls.”
She also gives a special thanks to the horses: “To the horses, thank you for providing loads of entertainment to the children on your early walk to the stables. You also are much loved.”

One Stone, Many Ripples

FAR RIGHT FROM TOP: Butshabethu Zulu, a Grade 11 student, providing his testimony on Calling Academy Stellenbosch; Sarel Rossouw (Val de Vie Foundation Trustee) and learner CJ Moses; Vanessa Barnes, VDV resident and Calling Academy teacher volunteer.

The Val de Vie Foundation is honoured to support the launch of Calling Academy Paarl. Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands, this low-fee-paying independent high school is now housed in the original 1854 farm building that once educated the children of farm owners. Calling Academy Paarl is the newest addition to the Calling Academy network, joining two other low-feepaying schools.
The first Academy was founded in 2018 and has established an excellent track record in academics, character development, enrichment modules and postschool pathways. In 2024, Calling Academy Stellenbosch achieved a 93.3% matric pass rate, with half of its learners attaining a bachelor’s pass, enabling them to continue their studies at university.
2025 marks the first year of Calling Academy Paarl, beginning with two Grade 8 classes. The goal is to grow the school from 54 to 300 learners within five years. This development completes the circle for a building initially established for the privileged few. Still, it offers a level of education one could expect from a top school at a fraction of the cost for under-resourced learners. Calling Academy truly creates many ripples with a single stone.
Val de Vie Foundation Introduction to Calling Academy
On Wednesday 12 March, a group of Val de Vie Estate residents and Val de Vie Foundation trustees attended a presentation on the Calling Academy model. They met the Grade 8 Calling Academy Paarl learners and heard personal testimonies from two Grade 11 learners from Calling Academy Stellenbosch.
The evening began with wine tasting and a presentation featuring two exquisite wines and an MCC from Rickety Bridge. Simon Crosbie and his wife, Melissa, originally from the UK, are the new owners of Rickety Bridge and, now call Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate home. In a generous gesture, they donated the wines for the occasion. Their vision is rooted in social mobility and they are dedicating their philanthropic efforts in the valley to
A boy and his horse by Lohan de Wet from Kinder Ark.

initiatives that will create a lasting impact for generations to come.
The evening concluded with a presentation by Lorraine Hadfield and Vanessa Barnes, explaining why the Val de Vie Foundation supports Calling Academy and providing new insights on the importance of independent, lowfee-paying schools. Vanessa Barnes, Val de Vie Estate homeowner and pro bono volunteer teacher at Calling Academy, shared an analogy of a single stone creating many ripples. With 30 years of teaching experience in diverse settings – ranging from affluent independent schools to teaching basic literacy to young adults with disabilities – Vanessa said, “My husband and I set up an NPO to provide quality secondary education to learners from township schools in KwaZulu-Natal. If we had met Calling Academy, we would have much preferred to invest in this model.”
Funding Model
Founder Werner Cloete outlined the funding model, explaining how his vision for Calling Academy was inspired by his experience at Paul Roos (where he was Head Boy and later a teacher). His goal is to offer a similar experience to that of a top school at a fraction of the cost. The funding model includes an affordable fee of R7 320 per annum per learner. The remaining 75% of the cost per learner is covered by government subsidies (approximately 50%) and learner partnerships (approximately 50%). Government subsidies, however, only become available from the second year of a new independent school, regardless of whether the model has been proven elsewhere. Werner also presented plans for the rollout of the classrooms and showcased the architectural plans, discussing available funding and the need for additional donor support.

‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.’ – MOTHER TERESA
Western Cape Education Ministry Supports Calling Academy Model
The Val de Vie Foundation is not alone in supporting the Calling Academy model. At the official opening in early March 2025, Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier, spoke about why this model needs to be accelerated in the province.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) faces two significant challenges:
• Improving learning outcomes compared to other countries.
• Expanding access to education.
WCED is addressing these challenges through several initiatives:
• The Back on Track programme offers extra classes for 23 500 learners.
• Supporting almost 2 500 teachers with extra professional development.
• The construction of 10 new schools in 2025, with R2,5 billion secured for further school development.
However, the WCED cannot solve these challenges alone. Independent schools play a crucial role in addressing these issues:
• Learning outcomes: According to the World Bank
Education Sector Analysis, Independent schools generally deliver higher learning outcomes than Quintile 5 (fee-paying, well-resourced) schools.
• They are rapidly improving: Independent schools are rapidly improving. In the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), independent schools are projected to surpass the international mean by 2027, compared to 2035 for Western Cape schools.
• Access: Independent schools also expand the number of places available in the school system. Contrary to the perception that they are only for the wealthy, 60% of independent schools in the Western Cape cater to learners in areas classified as Quintile 1 and 2.
• It works: Calling Academy has proven that this model works, with Calling Academy Stellenbosch achieving a 93.3% matric pass rate in 2024, half of which were bachelor’s passes.
Despite these successes, the problem is that the Western Cape has too few independent schools:
• In Gauteng, 14% of learners attend independent schools.
• Only 5% of learners in the Western Cape participate in independent schools.
• Calling Academy meets a critical need in Paarl by helping develop future leaders.

RESIDENT Story

Symphony of Luxury
Bang & Olufsen hosted a Valentine’s Day event at The Yard Wellness Centre, bringing together the best in sound, design and luxury living. Guests had the chance to experience the D-One Cinema by Bang & Olufsen, where they were immersed in crystal-clear audio and visuals in the Val de Vie Properties cinema. Each note and beat highlighted the remarkable impact on how we experience sound in a dedicated music space.
Alongside the showcase, guests explored the Luxury Market, which featured exquisite jewellery from the Linde Collection, Feels by Heyday and high-end sportswear from ITU Golf Wear. The Chocolate Room by Beyers was a crowd favourite, while guests enjoyed premium spirits like Dalmore Whisky, Jura Whiskey and Elector Whisky throughout the evening. Guests also sipped on Graham Beck Bubbly and Ultimate Provenance Rosé while mingling in the relaxed atmosphere.
As the night wrapped up, it was again evident why Bang & Olufsen leads in home innovation. They’ve perfected the art of turning ordinary moments into something extraordinary.
A Different Kind of Saddle
From 16 to 23 March 2025, a group of Val de Vie Estate residents took on the tough challenge of the Absa Cape Epic. We talk to resident Rob Browne about his experience of the race.
A seasoned cyclist, Rob Browne participated in his third Absa Cape Epic this year, having previously competed in 2017 and 2023. Rob’s intense training schedule included five weekly rides, focusing on physical endurance and mental resilience.
What was he most excited about for the race? “Cycling on familiar trails in the Paarl area will be a special experience. There’s a certain comfort in knowing every turn, climb and descent – each stretch of road carrying its own memories. The advantage, of course, is the confidence that comes with familiarity; you know exactly what to expect. But at the same time, that predictability can be a double-edged sword – there’s no mystery, no surprises, just the steady anticipation of what’s ahead.”

Farewell Summer Blooms
Adene’s Farm Flowers, located behind the ViLLAGE deli, will be closing for the summer season around the 20th of April.
Although the fields will be out of bloom, fresh flower bunches will still be available at the deli throughout the year.
Residents can look forward to the farm reopening for the winter/spring season in mid to late June, bringing Italian ranunculus, anemones, butterfly ranunculus and Matthiola incana (stocks).
For now, there’s still time for visitors to enjoy picking dahlias seven days a week from 07:30 to 11:00 until the season officially ends.
