Stress Tests – A Mechanism for Effective Security Systems Val de Vie Estate has a vast array of Risk and Security Management systems to ensure the commitments and obligations to residents are met and maintained 24/7, thus living up to the Estate’s deserved reputation as the most secure in Africa. These alone, however, do not assure adequate and absolute security unless they are tested continuously to the limit and under the same stress situations as when real perpetrators wish to breach the defences and gain entry.
Changing of the Guard Succession planning is vital, especially in an essential estate management function such as risk and security management. This multifaceted function requires exceptional skill, confidence and expertise. Louis de Jager, a Colonel in the South African Police Service, joined Val de Vie Estate as Risk and Security Manager in 2016. He built a strong, successful, world-class team and identified Marius Herselman in 2018 while
The first line of defence, i.e., the electronic thermal blanket, is, for obvious reasons, the most targeted. Therefore, extensive breach stress tests are mandatory, and the fence is tested twice daily under similar circumstances as expected from perpetrators. This is done to test the alertness and skills of the offsite monitoring company, Astrosec, as well as the response of the guarding company Thorburn Security Services and their trained Tactical Team operators.
serving as a Crime Intelligence Captain. In October 2021, Marius joined the Security Team as assistant Security Manager. Marius is a BA (Police Science) graduate who served valiantly in the South African Police Service in several specialised fields for over 27 years. He
These tests vary between straightforward attempts of approaching the fence and breaching through disabling the fence, cutting the fence, going over the fence and, where possible disabling cameras. It is done regularly at all hours of the day and night and even sometimes in sophisticated gillie suits with attempts to dig underneath the fence. Insisting on and ensuring that the monitoring company recruits only the highest quality monitoring operators is paramount, and consequence management is implicitly applied. There can be no margin for error; each stress test failed is regarded as an actual breach, and the contractually agreed upon sanctions are applied without exception. More than stress testing the fence alone is required. It is alternated with “walk-in tests” at the main entrances, especially at peak times and hours, to ensure alertness of access control is and remains optimal throughout each 12-hour shift.
worked closely with Louis at Val de Vie Estate for the past eighteen months broadening his specialised skillset to include estate risk and security management. On 1 March 2023, Louis passed the baton to Marius. The day marked a year-long process to prepare Marius for the role. After seven successful years at Val de Vie Estate, Louis will remain a Security Consultant and be available at the security office at The Yard. In addition, he will be available as Commissioner of Oaths from

Fairview stands behind Red Angus as the best choice for quality meat. They are a calm breed, do not have horns, calve very easily and require minimal human interaction – best for both parties involved. All their cows are fed on spent grain and barley from the CBC brewery, whey from the cheese factory and graze on green Kikuyu pastures. During the annual grape harvest, the animals are also treated to grape skins from the wine cellar. By sourcing meat from Fairview, Back’s is shortening its supply chain as much as possible – making for a lower environmental impact.

one of South Africa’s most well-known wine districts. The passion for his craft is audible in the excited tone of his voice when he talks about this year’s harvest. As Robert Louis Stevenson so aptly said, “wine is bottled poetry”, and every harvest writes a poem of its own. This year, the harvest was smaller than in previous years due to the dry winter, which made for a short, intense, and early harvest. Nevertheless, Renier is delighted with the excellent quality of the grapes and has high expectations for this year’s poem.
Alcohol levels may vary from wine to wine, depending on the amount of sugar. Next, the wine obtained during the previous verses is subjected to another process malolactic fermentation. During this time, the acid flavour is lowered, which makes wines more pleasant on the palate. Bottling comes last; before this can happen, Renier crafts the blend; the wine goes through a filtering process and is left to age. Naturally Sustainable The natural world has been around for a very long time. Every living organism is testament to individual survival and the biological sustainability of its species over many aeons. Looking around at the natural wonders surrounding us, it is evident that nature can show us as individuals and species how sustainability should work. Life is sustained by energy. The intricacies of the food web within an ecosystem show how energy is transferred throughout the entire system, each part being reliant on the others for survival, just as humans have built up their own system of energy flow from farm to table. Natural organisms ensure that their energy flow is not affected by outstripping or damaging the

resources they rely on, and to do this, they limit their use of resources or adapt to new ones. This can be seen in highly specialised animals such as cheetahs, which rely on medium-sized antelope as prey. Generalists, such as the leopard, will change their diet when needs be. Interestingly, specialised animals are fewer in number and more prone to disruptions in the energy flow than generalists, which is why there are still leopards in the Cape mountains, but no cheetahs.

or drought. The annual migration of swallows and other birds is well known. The modern migration of We will see more of this happening as the effects of climate change become more severe. It is only when there is enough energy in the ecosystem that reproduction can take place. On a species basis, for a species to survive, two individuals only need to produce two offspring that make it to adulthood during their lifespan. Any other offspring that survive add to the numbers, and the species flourishes. There are two distinct breeding strategies, one where a myriad of offspring are produced with very little input from the parents, insects being an excellent example of this, and another where few offspring are produced, but the parents ensure survival by putting a lot of energy into their offspring - as in elephants and humans; both strategies work, but larger, more complex organisms predominantly use the second. Raising offspring to breeding age and thus ensuring genes pass over into a new generation is one of the strongest urges in the natural world. In real terms, only the strongest members of a species get to breed, and of the surviving offspring, only the top five percent will ever breed successfully. The adage of ‘survival of the fittest’ rings true.

Seed-Snatching and Nest-Building: The Secret Life of Red-Billed Queleas
DI D YOU K NOW ? Red-billed queleas are known for their nomadic nature and can travel long distances in search of food and suitable habitats. Some flocks have been known to travel over 3000 km in a year.
Among the many bird species that call Western Cape home is the small red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea), found in large flocks throughout Africa. While their massive communities and seed-eating habits can cause damage to crops, their small size, intricate nests, and adaptability to a wide range of habitats make them remarkable species to observe and study. Red-billed queleas are primarily granivorous, meaning they feed on seeds. They are particularly fond of grass seeds and can cause significant damage to agricultural fields. As a result, therefore being known as the 'feathered locust.' During the breeding season, male red-billed queleas build elaborate nests out of grass

Share the Love
We love celebrating the month of love in the Valley of Life! Families on our Estate spend quality time together and friends and neighbours share a sense of community and make lasting memories. ‘Love’ is a word we use to express emotions and situations. “I love pink.” “I love a good steak.” “I love you.” There are different types of love such as agape, that is love without self-benefit, showing empathy and kindness to all humankind, and a foundation for happiness and contentment. Then there is
storge; the most natural of all types of love is the love parents have for their children. It’s a protective love that comes naturally from deep within, and we can’t help ourselves. Val de Vie Estate offers an environment to engage on many levels. Through these interactions, we wish to promote well-being, a sense of community, happiness, and success. At the start of this new year, in the month of love, let’s commit to genuinely appreciating our families, our neighbours, the world-class infrastructure,
landscaping and facilities, and the life we are privileged to live in this magnificent Estate. To safeguard the gift of life and show respect for all who reside here, we must pay attention to the Estate Rules and how we engage and communicate with fellow residents and all who work here. Appreciate and respect all forms of life, whether human, fauna or flora. May we carry the message of care and kindness with us in February and every month of the year.

The sound of waves crashing against the shore, the chirping of birds in the trees, and the laughter of children playing in the park. These sounds make life rich and meaningful. However, these sounds may be faint or entirely lost for those with hearing loss. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 466 million people worldwide have hearing loss. This number is expected to increase to over 900 million by 2050, making hearing loss one of our most significant global health issues. Despite its prevalence, hearing loss remains one of the most ignored health conditions, with millions of people suffering in silence due to the stigma associated with hearing aids. Untreated hearing loss poses significant risks to both physical and mental health. Studies conducted by researchers like Frank Lin at Johns Hopkins University have linked hearing loss to a higher risk of dementia, depression, and even falls. Lin and his colleagues have found that even mild hearing loss can increase the risk of cognitive decline by as much as 30 - 40 percent.Despite the well-documented risks of untreated hearing loss, many people still resist seeking help or using hearing aids. According to a study published in The Lancet, only 17 percent of adults with hearing loss use hearing aids. Many are deterred by the cost, while others believe that hearing aids will make them look old or disabled. However, the reality is that modern hearing aids are discreet, comfortable, and highly effective. Hearing aids are no longer the bulky, uncomfortable devices they used to be. They are easy to use and can even connect to your smartphone or TV. Even famous people have struggled with hearing loss. Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest composers in history, experienced hearing loss at a young age and eventually became completely deaf. Despite this, Beethoven continued to create some of his most iconic works, including the Ninth Symphony. Beethoven once said, “Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence.” His perseverance in the face of hearing loss is a testament to the importance of addressing this issue and finding ways to overcome its challenges. Don’t suffer in silence if you or someone you know is struggling with hearing loss. Seek help from a qualified audiologist and use the latest hearing aid technology to improve your quality of life.
