In today’s interconnected world, technology bridges the gap between continents, allowing us to communicate and collaborate globally. Yet, the importance of ‘belonging’ cannot be understated. It plays a crucial role in enhancing our mental wellbeing and physical health. A study published in the Journal of Community Psychology found that people who have a stronger sense of community experience higher life satisfaction and reduced loneliness.

A Sense of Belonging

At Val de Vie Estate, our thoughtfully designed neighbourhoods foster these essential connections. Here, a supportive network is always within reach, from friends, neighbours, healthcare professionals and our dedicated security personnel. The close-knit relationships with those around us provide not only emotional support but also practical resources and timely information, ensuring we are never alone should we need help. As a global leader in luxury wellness

estates, our cohesive and established community is supported by an array of facilities and outdoor activities that positively impact our physical health. Research indicates that socially isolated individuals are more likely to experience chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease. In contrast, those with strong social networks tend to enjoy better overall health and longevity. Val de Vie Estate exemplifes how where you live, really can change your life, and for the better.

On Call and Ready

In a pioneering effort to enhance the well-being and safety of our residents, the Val de Vie HOA is proud to announce the availability of a dedicated ambulance service on 1 June 2024. Recognising the critical need for rapid medical response and timely treatment, this initiative aims to provide emergency care right at our doorstep.

The initial announcement of this dedicated ambulance service was met with enthusiastic approval from our residents. The assurance of faster response times in emergencies brings a welcome sense of relief to our community. It is well known that healthcare and related services come at a signifcant cost, and we are deeply grateful for the fnancial contributions from Selwyn Chatz, Val de Vie Evergreen, the Val de Vie HOA and the Val de Vie Polo Club, which have made this vital service possible.

The 24/7 Titanium Securitas ambulance service, based at the Val de Vie Evergreen Medical Centre with a dedicated operations hub, features cutting-edge medical equipment and a team of highly skilled paramedics. Val de Vie Evergreen has provided accommodation to the ambulance teams during after-hours and standby periods, ensuring the ambulance is available around the clock.

Life Support Systems

The ambulance is equipped with advanced medical equipment, ensuring comprehensive care for emergencies ranging from cardiac incidents to severe injuries.

Expert Medical Personnel

Staffed with experienced emergency medical technicians (EMTs), the ambulance is adept at handling a wide range of medical emergencies.

Seamless Communication

Integrated communication systems facilitate direct and effcient coordination with nearby hospitals and healthcare providers, ensuring smooth patient transfers and continued care.

Minutes matter in medical emergencies

One of the primary benefts of this on-site service is the signifcant reduction in response time during a medical emergency. When every second counts, having a dedicated ambulance ensures that professional medical care can reach your doorstep in mere minutes.

The Val de Vie HOA is committed to continually assessing and enhancing the ambulance service to better serve residents. Future considerations include medical training sessions for the community and establishing stronger partnerships with local healthcare facilities. The launch of the dedicated ambulance service represents a landmark development in community healthcare. This initiative sets a new standard for gated communities, demonstrating a proactive approach to emergency medical care. The Val de Vie HOA remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of our residents, fostering a community that enjoys an exceptional living experience.

A Culinary Journey

In 2015, Val de Vie Estate resident Raphaël Chevalier-Bak embarked upon a gastronomic adventure, leaving his native France to move to South Africa. This journey began when Charles Back, the third-generation owner of Fairview, recognised the potential to elevate a simple idea into a thriving business – Raphaël was the missing ingredient needed to transform his concept into reality.

In 2016, he launched Maison Bak, an innovative online platform that delivered Fairview and Spice Route’s fnest offerings directly to Val de Vie Estate residents’ doorsteps. This convenient service laid the groundwork for what would later become Back’s deli, as Raphaël responded to residents’ needs for easy access to quality produce.

Where Nature is your closest Neighbour

Val de Vie Estate is set in a steep valley surrounded by some of the country’s most majestic mountains. These mountains are home to a myriad of organisms, and because of this, the Estate is ecologically managed as part of the greater landscape and not as a standalone site – as part of the neighbourhood, if you will.

The Groot Drakenstein mountain range lies to the east, stretching from the R301 to the Breede River Valley, some 40 kilometres away. This mountain reserve is not just a wilderness area but a vital catchment area for rainfall. The water collected here sustains both the Berg and the Breede Rivers, highlighting its crucial role in the local ecosystem. Within the reserve, wildlife abounds in an almost unaltered state, with plants and animals living as they have done for aeons. While larger

megafauna such as elephants, lions, hook-lipped rhinoceroses and some larger antelope like eland, Cape mountain zebras and red hartebeests are now locally extinct, species such as Cape mountain leopards, mountain reedbucks and klipspringers still exist.

Some of these organisms are endemic to the mountain range, meaning they are found nowhere else. Consequently, they are considered endangered, with threats from human development and unseasonal or frequent fres posing signifcant risks. This is why Cape Nature protects the area. Although access is allowed on via walking trails, mountain permits are required to control the number of hikers. These permits are available from Cape Nature.

• SUSTAINABILITY • page 10

When hiking the trails, please remember to ‘leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs.’

In the valley where Val de Vie Estate is located, remnants of wildlife can still be found. Our biodiversity corridor, a critical link between the Groot Drakenstein mountains and the Berg River, facilitates the movement of wildlife from the mountains to the river. This corridor is home to some endangered plant species, highlighting its importance in promoting biodiversity.

All these neighbours deserve a place to live and thrive, and it is up to us, their greatest threat, to protect our neighbourhood. By doing so, we ensure future generations, too, can enjoy the beauty of living in the Valley of Life.

Cat-like Creatures

The common genet, scientifcally called Genetta genetta and in Afrikaans, a muskeljaatkat, is a member of the Viverrid family. These elegant creatures, known for their graceful movements and nocturnal lifestyle, inhabit regions across Europe, Africa and parts of the Middle East.

They have slender bodies covered in soft, spotted coats ranging from grey to tawny and boast large ears and expressive eyes, making them agile hunters. Despite their cat-like appearance, they are more closely related to mongooses and civets.

Common genets are adept predators with a varied diet of small mammals, birds, insects and fruits. Their lithe bodies and sharp claws render them profcient climbers, enabling them to effortlessly hunt birds and arboreal prey, while their superior night vision further enhances their nocturnal hunting prowess. These animals lead solitary lives, except during breeding season. After a gestation period of around 10 weeks, females give birth to litters of between two and four kittens. These young genets are raised in dens hidden in dense vegetation or abandoned burrows until they are old enough to fend for themselves.

Did you know?

Highly effcient hunters, common genets have a success rate of up to 70% when capturing prey.

Common genets employ a range of vocalisations for communication. Their sounds, which include chirps, chatters, hisses, and purrs are used for social interactions, territorial defence and mating displays.

These creatures use scent glands on their cheeks and between their toes to mark territory and communicate with other genets.

They have been depicted in various ancient artworks and are often associated with symbols of agility and stealth.

They are skilled climbers and can descend from trees headfrst due to their fexible ankles.

Common genets are meticulous groomers, helping them to maintain their appearance and playing a crucial role in removing parasites while keeping their fur in optimal condition for both insulation and camoufage.

Bridging Passion and Purpose

Marzé du Plessis, the newest instructor at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club’s, love of horses ignited at the tender age of four, and not in the typical way. Growing up in a small community, she didn’t have access to formal riding lessons. Instead, she honed her skills by herding cattle, immersing herself in natural horsemanship and ‘cowgirl culture’.

Her journey took a pivotal turn when she volunteered at a riding school for young people with special needs in Lydenburg (also known as Mashishing), a town on the Mpumalanga Highveld. Inspired by the profound impact of equine-assisted learning, she experienced frsthand the transformative power of equine interaction – which led her to pursue formal studies in equine-assisted therapy. Marzé is committed to fostering a deep understanding of horsemanship, to make a difference one hoofprint at a time.

Inspired Through Hope & Gratitude

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman brings life, hope and compassion without borders.

“The country is not falling apart. Trust me, I know what that looks like, and this isn’t it. Yes, we have challenges, but challenges are part of life.” Dr Imtiaz Sooliman captivated over 170 attendees at a recent Val de Vie Foundation event, held in partnership with U3A in the Pavilion Ballroom. Optimistic, visionary, with a ‘let’s get it done’ attitude, Dr Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers portrays resilience, despite dedicating much of his time to crises and human suffering. He recounted his journey and the growth of what is now Africa’s largest disaster response non-governmental organisation of African origin. Operating in over 45 countries, Gift of the Givers has made a monumental impact by providing disaster relief and aiding the most vulnerable. The stories he relayed, often bordering the miraculous, of navigating through complex challenges during humanitarian crises deeply moved all those present. His message echoed unwavering positivity and hope for South Africa’s future, reminding us of our inherent resilience and kindness in human nature. Renowned business journalist Chris Gibbons then facilitated an interactive

Q&A session, allowing attendees to delve deeper into the discussion on humanitarian efforts and their impact on society. Gift of the Givers continues to rely solely on funding from South Africa, and this support consistently fows where there is a need. When asked if he would consider running for president, he responded, “Not a chance. My instruction was clear: ‘You will never work in government but you will always work with government.’ And for 30 years, I have been doing that.” It’s not diffcult to understand why so many South Africans believe him to be a worthy leader. Despite challenges like load-shedding, service delivery shortcomings, corruption, and vacuum of ethical leadership, along with fading dreams for our Rainbow Nation, Dr Sooliman remains positive about the future of our country. Dr Sooliman reminded us that it is not enough to sit back and wait for someone else to help. “Fix yourself frst; start with positive habits and thought processes. Then look at where you can help. Help your own family frst, then your neighbourhood, then your community. If you seek it, you will fnd a way to make a difference.”

We Rise by Supporting Others

This year marked a signifcant milestone as Val de Vie I and Val de Vie II merged into a single Val de Vie Estate HOA, symbolising our unifed community. This merger also introduced a consolidated Val de Vie Foundation levy, reinforcing our collective commitment, now truly ‘our’ Val de Vie Foundation, to making a positive impact. Over the past nine years, the Val de Vie Foundation has been instrumental in driving positive change across the greater Cape Winelands region. As homeowners, we should take pride in this collective ownership and the meaningful difference we've made, knowing that our support has been crucial to these achievements.

In April, representatives from the Val de Vie Foundation had the privilege of visiting Monte Christo Miqlat (MCM), an organisation proudly supported by the Val de Vie Foundation. This visit underscored the Val de Vie Foundation's commitment to community upliftment and its support for impactful initiatives.

Building Peaceful, Sustainable Families

At the core of MCM is Tiffany’s Community Care Centre, situated in the impoverished Lantana in Paarl East, an area notorious for organised gang activities that lure young people lacking family role models. The centre is a safe hub that offers nutrition, skills training, job creation and community care. It also provides education support for preschoolers and operates a maths and literacy tutoring programme for after-school students.

Under the leadership of visionary CEO, Aletia Grundling, MCM is committed to its mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through measurable positive outcomes tracked by its monitoring and evaluation programme. In 2023 alone, the organisation distributed one million free meals across the Drakenstein Municipality to creches, soup kitchens, other rural NGOs and within its own programmes. Without these meals, many of the recipients would have gone without food for the entire day. MCM secured an annual donation from USA-based Kids Around the World and Food for the Hungry to ensure our most vulnerable are fed.

Down…But Not Out

One of MCM's most innovative and impactful initiatives is the Full Circle Homeless Programme, which offers 80 part-time job opportunities for the homeless. During a recent morning spent at MCM, attendees had the privilege of meeting Jason Hendricks, a living testament to the power of change and community support. Jason has turned his life around, now having a place to stay and meaningful work that benefts the broader community. MCM provides teams that ensure the industrial area of Paarl East remains clean and tidy, supporting local businesses. Jason takes immense pride in the work he and his team do. He expressed his gratitude for the Val de Vie Foundation’s outreach to those most in need.

A Change of Heart

In 2016, gang warfare and fear overshadowed daily life in Lantana. Determined to create a safer environment, Aletia Grundling and the Miqlat directorship boldly stepped forward to ensure that staff members and children could continue attending Tiffany’s Community Care Centre. They realised that their mission could not progress without frst addressing the rampant violence. The fearless heroines of this story are Aletia, Jenny (Tiffany’s Manager) and Cathy (Tiffany’s Cook). They confronted the situation directly and engaged in a dialogue with the gang leaders who had organised the war between two gangs, the Barbarians and the Stifis. Their bravery and determination in the face of such adversity are truly inspiring.

This followed an episode where 37 gang members, aged 12 to 24, clashed in the street, hurling rocks at each other. In a moment of profound courage, Cathy, a highly respected fgure in the community, declared, “Enough is enough.” She took a chair, placed it between the two gangs, and sat down, refusing to move. The two gang leaders, struck by her resolve, agreed to talk to each other with MCM as the mediator. In the following months, they would meet at Tiffany’s gym and channel their energy into physical activities instead of violence.

MCM then launched a School of Drama, Creative Writing and Photography

These same young people started writing about their lives and their longing for a father fgure. Those of school-going age were encouraged to return to their studies. Several other such interventions followed, leading many gang members to choose a new path and turn their lives around. This shift culminated in the annual Fletse-fees and the painting of a Peace Wall at Tiffany's. Many youths discovered an interest in art, and one young man even painted a mural in the creche inside Tiffany's. Their story, illustrating the transformative power of MCM's interventions, has become a legend in Paarl East. It is documented in a new book, "Caribuntu: A Successful Social Business Casebook in South Africa”, which includes a chapter on the remarkable transformation of Paarl East from a community besieged by gang violence to one of peace and hope.
