claim they can ‘hear’ colours, I’ve never met someone who can smell the days of the week. She laughed and explained that when she was a child, the grass at her family home was always cut on a Friday. The cut grass was the first thing she picked up on the nose of the wine. As part of my studies, I specialised in the sensorial evaluation of wines. We went into great depth on how olfactory systems – which are responsible for smell and taste – work and the pathways they follow in the brain when you experience a smell or aroma. I still find it

During my time as a winemaking student at Stellenbosch University, I worked in tasting rooms on wine farms to improve my knowledge and gain experience. I specifically remember one day, when a couple walked through the door for a wine tasting and we started with a fresh Sauvignon Blanc. The first thing the lady mentioned, was that the wine smelled like a Friday! Personally, I thought it had aromas of passionfruit or gooseberries, or maybe even something green like peppers. I asked her what she meant, because although I’ve heard people

fascinating that we typically have a memory or feeling and then only afterwards does our brain recall the actual descriptor of what it is that we are smelling. At L’Huguenot Vineyards, we understand just how powerful the sense of smell can be. We pride ourselves on a winemaking process that isn’t based purely on science, but on the art of smell too. We hope that all of our wines create a pleasurable feeling or memory, each and every time you taste them and that those aromas keep you coming back for more.

For plants, smell is a vital form of communication. Each scent is a combination of complex chemicals, that evaporate easily and float through the air to attract pollinators and repel predators. These plant ‘perfumes’ can be found in any number of plant parts, including the roots, bark, leaves, seeds, flowers, wood or resin – and they have played an important role in everyday life in Southern Africa for many thousands of years.

The springbok ( Antidorcas marsupialis) is the national animal of South Africa, and the namesake of our country’s rugby team. The fenced 4.3-hectare nature reserve on Val de Vie I is home to a herd of springbok and zebra.

• Pick fresh basil, sage and rosemary at the Wellness Farm;

On Val de Vie Estate, rose-pelargoniums, wild rosemary and buchu, which is described as a combination between rosemary and peppermint, are just a few of the beautifully fragranced flowers and shrubs you are likely to experience while walking or running amongst the fynbos.

• The springbok gets its name from its boastful and magnificent jumping display, called stotting or “pronking” in Afrikaans. No one knows exactly why they do it, it could be because they are excited, agitated, spreading their scent or showing off their fitness to predators or rivals within their herd;

• Its natural enemies are cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and lions.

A Frenchman, by the name of Piesse devised a system whereby fragrances are compared to notes on a musical scale. This terminology is still used today. Essential oils are classified into top, middle and base notes. Top notes have light, fresh characteristics that are immediately apparent, such as basil, lemon and eucalyptus. The middle note is considered the heart of a fragrance, with the true scent only emerging some time after the top note, including pelargonium and lavender. A base note is a rich heavy scent, that emerges slowly and lingers for a long time, myrrh or jasmine are perfect examples of this.

It is these essential oils that give plants and spices their characteristic scent, flavour or perfume. In some cases, these oils are present in large quantities, for example you can often see, feel and smell them being released from an orange when it is peeled. In stark contrast, it takes more than a ton of rose petals to produce just 300 grams of rose oil.

It is believed that the name of the San people is derived from their use of aromatic shrubs to anoint their bodies. More recently, the term aromatherapy was coined by the French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse in 1935, after he used lavender essential oil to treat a burn.

In short, remain invested or invest more in a declining market, best approached with the guidance of an accredited, qualified, financial advisor. Investor behaviour is often driven by fear

If you try and make the same changes in your own portfolio or continue sitting on cash in this macro-economic environment, you might (and soon will) miss the opportunity presented to you as an investor. Once the market has turned for the better, you will still be sitting on the sidelines asking questions such as “isn’t the market too high to buy?”

You can place wine orders online, call 021 876 8037 or wineorders@lhuguenot.com.emailL'HuguenotisopenforsaleseverySaturdaybetween11:00-14:00.FreedeliverywithinValdeVieEstate.

Trying to time the market is a fool’s game, but by having the required futuristic outlook and analysing the data, some conclusions can be drawn, and sense can be made to a certain extent as to where we are in the market. Data seems to suggest that, but one thing is certain: we are closer to being at the bottom of the market than we were this time last year.

WORDS BY BRENTHURST WEALTH, PROUD PARTNER OF THE VAL DE VIE ESTATE GARDEN COMPETITION OF THE YEAR 2022

What is the best strategy in a declining market, with the bottom expected to be close?

Instant gratification. Something that most of us simply cannot live without. This trait surfaces in many areas of our lives. Whether it be in our relationships, careers, or finances. The list is never-ending. One area of our daily lives where this is probably most prevalent is when it comes to our personal finances – and even more so, investment portfolios.You allocate your capital to an investment, and the first thing you want to know before the transaction is even completed, is “how much money did I make, or perhaps how much money will I make?” Instant gratification is probably one of the biggest traits leading many investors to a downfall, because (believe it or not), waiting helps you as an investor. Charlie Munger said: 'if you didn’t get the deferredgratification gene, you have got to work very hard to overcome that'.

page 6

A modern interpretation of Burgundy’s best. The emphasis of this wine is on mouthfeel. Well balanced, with an excellent structure, framed by an elegant finish and textured after-taste. Prominent aromas of red fruit, raspberry and frangipane balanced by soft yellow fruit such as apple and warm citrus. A versatile companion to chicken, duck, fish, Mediterranean cuisine and soft cheeses such as brie, camembert and mozzarella.

However, the question remains: How do we know when markets bottom, and in today’s terms - are we there yet?

Polo Club Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2022 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir

Polo Club Sauvignon Blanc 2022 100% Sauvignon Blanc

The Bottom of the Markets: Are we there yet?

In layman’s terms, the best thing you can do in these times, and keep doing, is contribute money towards your investments, effectively buying shares each month at a cheaper price than the month before. It is impossible to go out and time the markets.

Raise a Glass

A fresh, crisp, medium- bodied wine made in a newworld style. A firm yet refined structure with fresh, plump pineapple and citrus flavours that impart a zesty, lingering after-taste. This refreshing wine with its herbaceous notes will pair well with fresh salads containing asparagus, pea shoots and basil. Simple, seasoned ingredients such as oysters and prawns will also be complemented by this wine.

The other scapegoat for the irrational behaviour by investors is fear. People react in one of three ways when facing fear: flight, fight, or freeze. And unfortunately, the first option is normally taken by investors, whereas the latter has historically (and statistically) led to better results for investors. Patient and neutral investors know that the market is ahead of the news, and by the time the headlines reflect the fear and failure, it will already be priced in. It is therefore of extreme importance to have a forward-looking viewpoint when decisions are to be made regarding your investment portfolio.

Golf course projects are now closing as focus shifts to conditioning and irrigation upgrades over the next two months. Our golf course will be closed to play from 18 to the 23 of September for spring treatment (hollow tining). This is in preparation to ensure the course is in pristine condition for what is destined to be a bumper season. Residents who wish to take advantage of our post-hollow tining special will be offered a green fee rate of R695 with a shared cart. This special rate will be for one week only, from 24 September until 2 October. Email golf@pearlvalley.co.za to secure your spot.

The winter months provided us with the necessary time to upgrade our swimming pool in preparation for the summer ahead. The Pearl Valley pool, a popular spot when temperatures start rising, has been re-lined and fifty new pool lounges purchased. In addition, the pool bar will see a minor upgrade. We thank residents for their patience over the last two years in allowing us the time to generate the necessary funds required to complete the work. We are planning an official launch of the upgraded pool. We will share more information on our social media channels and in the weekly newsletter.

In October, The Valley restaurant will present a new food and wine menu based on the valuable feedback of our residents. On the menu will be a healthy variety of dishes with a focus on vegetarian and gluten-free options. We try our best to keep prices competitive, however, the current cost of fuel and load shedding can sometimes make this it difficult. We have regular themed evenings and a daily specials board to combat this.

Miguel practices chess regularly at home in preparation for his championshipsforthcoming

• COMMUNITY •

Commenting on his son’s achievements, Ricardo Alho said: “As a family, we are especially proud that Miguel gives the glory to God and that he believes that if he prays for it, then it will happen for him. He is dedicated to the game of chess, and already talks about how he would like to be named a Grandmaster, as well as World Champion. Of course, we will do everything we can to support him in achieving his goals.”

Now eight years old, he has a host of achievements under his belt, including being named as the top player at his school, and subsequently being appointed to the role of chess captain – considerable achievements for a young boy of his age. His first major tournament was the South African Junior Chess Championships in Centurion, a tournament dating back more than 30 years, which typically attracts in excess of 2,500 junior chess players and officials. Held over six intense days, he achieved a magnificent fourth place in the Under 8 Open category. This result meant that Miguel was selected to represent South Africa at the African Youth Chess Championships held in Zambia in July, and after nine games he was awarded sixth place. The margins were so tight, that had he managed to win just one more game, he would have been awarded first place. Most recently, the young champ was chosen to be a part of the Western Province chess team, and later this year, he will participate in the South African Junior Chess Championships.

Young resident, Miguel Alho first started playing chess on his sixth birthday after being gifted a small chess set. It wasn’t the present he had asked for, but as his birthday fell during lockdown and with limited access to both the shops and gifts, his parents thought the set might help him learn a new skill. After just six months of practising and playing with his family, including his Oupa, he beat his Dad for the very first time. He went on to join his school’s chess team, competing and performing well in various tournaments. This resulted in the chess coach at his school commenting on his “natural flair and talent” for the game.
