he previous digital edition of the Grapevine was so well received that we decided to produce both a printed and a digital version for spring 2020. Lockdown has certainly presented us with challenges, but there have also been many silver linings and inspirational stories during this trying time. As we gradually bid winter farewell we look toward this season that represents hope and new life. May we wisely invest our time for the remainder of this year in the things that really matter.

ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT

WELL SEASONED

At the time of writing this article, the winter rains have transformed the Estate which is looking magnificent following the lengthy Covid-19 lockdown period where only the very basic were able to be done to landscaping and general upkeep. W O R D S B Y T E R R Y K E L L E R , E S TAT E M A N A G E R

T

he effect of Covid-19 has touched every single South African in one way or the other. The Estate was not immune to these negative effects and has had to adapt to what is commonly being referred to as, “the new normal”. While it would be easy to sit and bemoan the negatives and the impact of Covid-19 on estate life, I thought it would be far more interesting to highlight the positives that have emerged over the past three months. Focusing on the doom and gloom is counterproductive so sit back and let’s explore the good things that have emerged. Who could have imagined how effective online meetings would

8 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

be? Our Estate team, through the wonders of modern technology, were able to meet online to attend to the day to day management of the Estate. Not only did this method of meeting prove efficient, it also proved that one doesn’t always have to spend time travelling to meetings. Seems ‘Zoom’ and ‘Microsoft Teams’ will be with us long after Covid-19 has passed. Lockdown resulted in far more families walking and exploring the great outdoors within the confines of the Estate. The family time spent walking, running or cycling around the Estate will no doubt be something that has become a family essential going forward

and has encouraged management to look at supplementing and upgrading outdoor natural facilities. Not having access to indoor facilities has made us realise how valuable and important these are to our enjoyment of the Estate and we hope that by the time you are reading this, they have opened up with the easing of restriction levels. No doubt the gyms and pools will see all the regulars return and many new fitness enthusiasts keen to continue their lockdown exercise routines. While we all have sympathy for the challenges parents of school going children are facing trying to juggle

ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT

the multitude of tasks raging from working from home to home schooling, it has been tremendous to see the number of children who have discovered the freedom of riding a bicycle. I see so many more youngsters moving about on their bicycles now than ever before and this is what Estate living is all about. Freedom to explore and only arrive home when the sun goes down. Covid-19 has brought with it difficult times, but in difficult times people generally come together and do amazing things. The Val de Vie Estate community has raised over R1 million towards food parcels for struggling families in our surrounding communities. I don’t think we will completely

understand the value of receiving a food parcel when the pantry is empty, but we can take some comfort that the Val de Vie Estate community made a difference in the lives of many families. During the toughest part of lockdown the Deli opened its doors on the Estate and instantly fulfilled the need of picking up a few essentials without leaving the Estate. The uptake has been fantastic and we trust that support remains good which will allow the Deli to continue to supply quality foods for many years to come. While we are not back to preCovid-19 normal, we trust that the situation will slowly but surely normalise and are committed to put

every effort into ensuring that the Estate remains fully operational. It is important to recognise the immense effort by our security, maintenance, landscaping, cleaning and admin teams over the past four months. Through the Covid-19 turmoil they remained dedicated to their task, some were affected by shorter working hours and others like security pressed on business as normal. To each and everyone of them I say thank you, your efforts in these very difficult times is appreciated. Until next time, enjoy the promise of spring that’s on the way and we trust that you and your family remain safe and healthy.

FREEDOM OF THE YOUNG, CARE OF THE OLD

T

oday’s retirees, the so-called ‘Baby Boomers’ born between 1946 – 1964, have different needs and aspirations to the previous generation. Boomers looking to retire require beautiful spaces, convenience, work-from-home opportunities, technology in the home, access to gyms and heated swimming pools, independence and flexibility. They also require discreet healthcare options should the need arise and appreciate flexible purchase models and affordable levies.

The second phase of Val de Vie Evergreen’s completed homes can be occupied immediately. Retirees in South Africa’s safest and most luxurious retirement village relish this ‘next chapter’ of their lives in an environment that is a far cry from the traditional old age home. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

A modern retirement lifestyle is offered at Val de Vie Evergreen where residents have access to a private clubhouse, cinema and games room, bowls facility, a contemporary library and a bistro with a private chef, a comfortable lounge and dining area. A nurse consulting room allows for trained nurses and carers to provide healthcare services. Planned for the near future is a frail care and dementia ward, private gym, dedicated occupational therapy room and hair salon. Val de Vie Evergreen has adopted the internationally popular Life Right model as the mechanism that allows for alignment of the interests of the business with those of village residents. Life Right offers a cost-effective option for retirees and is ideal for

those with less capital to invest. Occupation of the unit for the remainder of the retiree’s life, and in the case of couples the death of the partner, is one of the many reasons why this scheme is growing in popularity amongst South Africans. Purchasing a Life Right property excludes transfer fees and VAT, resulting in minimal cost barriers to entry. Val de Vie Evergreen residents enjoy similar benefits to that of sectional title owners and have the added advantage that the Developer remains the owner and therefore carries the responsibility for external maintenance and upkeep of the units. Units in Phase 2 range from 148m² – 233m² in size and two showhouses are available for viewing by making an appointment with a member of the Val de Vie Evergreen team. Val de Vie Evergreen provides residents with a wonderful place to live without the hassles of garden upkeep, repairs and security upgrades. An active, healthy retirement is a given when living on Val de Vie Estate. Homes start from R3.45 million, for more information email property@valdevie.co.za

SWINGING THROUGH THE STORM Running a golf club through a pandemic has been a massive learning experience and has certainly required resilience, adaptability and plenty of creativity. Never have I felt prouder of my team than now. They have had to make many sacrifices and put in long hours to do whatever was required at the time to generate revenue or save on expenses. Our operation has come out stronger and better than before and the “new normal is not nearly as scary as what we anticipated. t feels so good to be back and to once again be doing what I love. Over the hard lock down many tough decisions had to be made to accommodate our business and cut expenses to a bare minimum. This has not been by choice but by necessity. In the past Pearl Valley hosted over 40 golf days per annum and would see international golfers return year on year from as early as November right through to April. These golfers equated for as much as 68% of our total expenses. This year is the first year since Pearl Valley opened its doors in 2003 that we have a budget formulated on members, their guests, and local South African residents only. As a result, a drastic re-look at our business model has been taken and through many

16 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

hours of scenario planning and outcome-based forecasts, I am confident that we have done enough to be sustainable until the end of our financial year. Our main objective is and always will be to keep our course as a top 5 course in South Africa. Many other budgets were severely cut to ensure the course had what it needed to be maintained to a standard we felt was required. Best practices are still being followed and adhered to with strict cost controls and measurables in place. Our clubhouse has taken on a new look with carefully positioned seating ensuring social distancing. The club has been well supported from a food delivery, dining service and a retail experience.

The Pearl Valley Academy is back up and running and James Wade together with Adrian Buchner are once again teaching. Our junior elite program, junior programme, ladies programme and all the other good things are happening. If you wish to find out more on taking your game to the next level, be sure to subscribe to our biweekly golf update or simply browse our website www.pearlvalley.co.za and under golf academy view our brochure to familiarise yourself with all we offer. Now more than ever I would like to encourage all residents on the estate to come and join the club or at least play 9 holes or a full round of 18 holes. This year we offered very competitive rates to encourage the use of our course.

Another good use of our time during lock down was to create an online golf store. This enables our shop to not only rely on feet through the door for sales but through digital media we are able to reach thousands of prospective buyers. The store has seen sales from as far as Australia and the USA. Next time you have some time, have a look at our weekly online deals, like, share and be sure to call us if anything on there grabs your attention.

One area of our club that I cannot wait to open, is our bar. Yes, I do miss craft beer and look forward to a cold CBC Amder Weiss, but more so because I miss the buzz. Our bar is such a gathering point after golf, during sports matches and at competition time. It also makes dining out that much better to be able to enjoy a great bottle of Val de Vie wine. I live in hope that we will be given the greenlight to open our bar and serve alcohol in our restaurant in the near future. Many of you who have supported the restaurant would have noticed that there is less seating allocated for service. This is a must from our side to conform with regulations but also a drive to allow us to be able to operate with less staff. Please respect the areas that are allocated for service and kindly seat yourself

in those if requiring service. If you wish to sit on your favourite couch next to the fire place or outside in the sun, no problem, please make use of our take away service. You are most welcome to enjoy your meal or coffee anywhere you like. In closing I wish to thank you all for conforming with the health and safety guidelines and for doing your part. It is vital that as an Estate we ensure each other’s safety as well as our own. As we now enter a time of more freedom of movement, I simply ask that when entering the club, you all kindly wear your mask. Take care, stay safe and I look forward to welcoming as many of you to the club and course as soon as possible.

COMPASSION THROUGH ACTION

Over the last few months amidst the nationwide lockdown, the Val de Vie Foundation has been hard at work assisting the most vulnerable in our communities. These efforts would not have been possible without our homeowners’ contributions. W O R D S B Y S I M O N E D E W E T, VA L D E V I E F O U N D AT I O N M A N A G I N G D I R E C T O R

t the Val de Vie Foundation we are fortunate to join hands with compassionate partners who believe that we can overcome fear with faith. Facing many obstacles in terms of keeping our community and NGO’s safe, we worked with various longtime partners to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July. On the eve of Madiba’s birthday, the Val de Vie Foundation handed out 300 reusable cotton face masks to the team of resident employees working on Val de Vie Estate. In time to catch the early morning start at the gatehouses, men and women were gifted the masks to ensure their health and safety at all times.

20 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

The Val de Vie Foundation worked with Hope Through Action to celebrate Madiba’s birthday on Saturday 18 July in Mbekweni and Groendal. In an effort to keep young members of the community warm, safe and healthy during the winter months, 1000 children from the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley received blankets, hygiene packs and celebratory Madiba day party packs worth R220 000. The on-the-ground organisation was brilliantly coordinated by Score and Gift of the Givers. The donated blankets were contributed by The Foschini Group’s ‘Sew Good Initiative’ to promote skill development of previously unemployed women.

Since its launch in 2015 the initiative has helped train over 350 women and donated nearly 200 000 warm blankets to South Africans in need. These purple blankets truly ‘spread warmth through action’ and continue to change the lives of both those making and receiving them.

Through the entire period of the lockdown, the Khula Development Group has continued to mentor their 430 most vulnerable learners who were at risk of dropping out of junior school. They adapted their school program and took it directly into the community visiting the homes of these learners to continue to inspire the passion for learning. Each Paarl East Khula Development child received a purple blanket and the amazing social workers were supported with rain boots and umbrellas to enable them to travel safely to work. Gift of the Givers is the largest disaster response, nongovernmental organisation of African origin on the continent and works to unite people with a common vision. Together with

Neutra-Fog, the Gift of the Givers helped to ensure that the venues, surfaces and handouts were sanitised and fully compliant with Covid-19 hygiene requirements. Gift of the Givers restores the hope and dignity of the most vulnerable in their time of need, rebuilding prosperous communities and empowering leaders of tomorrow.

COVID-19 RESPONSE FUND The Val de Vie Foundation Covid-19 Response Fund is a fundraising initiative that has enabled an estimated 2 913 120 meals to vulnerable families in the Cape Winelands since the implementation of the nationwide lockdown that was put into place at the end of March 2020. pandemic, Valcare, who specialises in managing social investments on behalf of the Val de Vie Foundation, made the decision to temporarily focus their attention on providing food support to those most affected in the PaarlFranschhoek Valley. The clear objective is to relieve hunger in communities by distributing food support via food parcels for household consumption, SMS vouchers and assistance to soup kitchens. A collective helping hand of more than 150 individuals, corporate investors, foundations

and trusts have donated R2 674 370 to help families in the PaarlFranschhoek Valley. A significant contribution was made by Val de Vie Estate, raising a total of R1 302 665 through donations from our compassionate residents and through the Val de Vie Foundation. Other notable funders include the Hanneli Rupert Getuienis Trust, The Aslan Trust and The Ironman Foundation. Over and above funds raised and donated, Drakenstein Municipality strengthened their support efforts by committing an additional R1 800 000 to run a parallel Food Security Programme, with Valcare acting as the administrators.

LOCAL HEROES During this time, there have been many kind-hearted individuals who have surfaced from the Val de Vie Estate community and who took it upon themselves to be innovative and make a difference. Val de Vie Estate resident, Malcolm Lange, a previous national cycling champion, and his wife Jackie, initiated a cycling challenge to assist aiding relief efforts. With all funds raised going towards food support in the Valley, they managed to rope in professional cyclists that had to complete as many kilometres as possible in one ride attempt. DSV Pro Team

cyclists Gert Heyns and Arno du Toit respectively completed a remarkable 200 kilometres in one ride, enduring challenging weather conditions for this worthy cause. Another caring Val de Vie Estate homeowner, Errard Sullivan and the Val de Vie Estate Social RunWalk Group organised a fun run where 66 people participated and raised enough funds to donate 17 monthly food parcels. Val de Vie Estate residents have really stepped up by taking responsibility and collectively raising funds for the Val de Vie Foundation Covid-19 Response Fund. Others have also contributed their time by serving as volunteers and helping to pack and sanitise food parcels. Even the local roastery, Fleet, got involved by sponsoring 400 cups of coffee to keep the volunteers going. It is amazing to see that anyone can make a difference – whether it’s by donating R50 or R250 000, packing parcels, praying, cycling, running or even giving coffee. It’s not about one person’s major effort, but about the collective input of many, said Ivan Swartz, CEO of Valcare. The hearts of our Val de Vie Estate homeowners and residents have been a major key in unlocking the success story of hope and inspiration in our Valley during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Val de Vie Foundation would like to thank everyone for their assistance that has enabled us to make a difference during a very daunting time for many families in our 24 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

Valley. Our aim is to inspire hope as we implore others to use 2020 as a steppingstone to continue making a difference and remain faithful to effecting change with every opportunity presented.

WELLNESS

THE ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION There is little not to love about growing up on Val de Vie Estate. Over the past couple of months while in lockdown, children of all ages were seen roaming free and making the most of their 1000 hectare ‘backyard’. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M

recent study from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland found that the freedom that country kids have to play outdoors with friends, means they develop motor skills faster than children raised in urban areas. The research article argues that unstructured play stimulates children’s development, helps prepare them for school life and builds confidence.

possessions are interacting with friends in a safe and healthy environment. Growing up in the rural countryside on standalone farms means a certain amount of isolation is experienced by children, but this is not the case on Val de Vie Estate – here children are surrounded by a diverse community of people while having the freedom to explore expansive areas, parks, the Berg river and

Watching children explore the wide-open spaces on the Estate, play in the parks, ride their bicycles alongside their friends while breathing in fresh, unpolluted air conjures up memories of how many of us grew up. Children love playing outside and life on Val de Vie Estate satisfies this. The reassurance for parents is priceless, knowing that their most valued 26 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

mountain bike trails, to name a few. The benefits of raising kids in a natural environment are legio. Below are research findings from a number of institutes that highlight why children from the countryside have increased feelings of well-being, compared to their counterparts in urban areas:

WELLNESS

Country kids have fever allergies. Labelled the “farm effect”, a phenomenon where kids raised on farms have remarkably low rates of allergies and asthma due to exposure to a farm’s plethora of pollen and other potential allergens that train the immune system to not overreact. n They are less stressed. Growing up surrounded by trees, flowers and fields isn’t just about pretty scenery. One study found that kids growing up “nearby nature” had lower stress levels. n They’re more coordinated. Turns out climbing on trees and rocks trumps a jungle gym any day. Children growing up in the countryside have n

better balance and agility, the reason: the uneven typography of natural settings are more challenging to traverse, resulting in better dexterity. n Nature reduces symptoms of attention deficit disorders. Kids exhibited fewer symptoms of ADD or ADHD after they have walked through a park and research shows that the greener their surroundings, the fewer symptoms of these disorders they displayed. n They’re more creative. Kids in green spaces use their imagination while playing more than those without vegetation and engage in more varied and elaborate play patterns, including complex makebelieve stories.

Often referred to as ‘the internet generation’, our children are not hampered by the confines of inaccessibility. During lockdown when classrooms entered their living spaces, school goers were spending hours in front of their computers and mobile devices while trying to keep up with the curriculum. Parents working from home allowed ‘more screen time’ than usual to keep children occupied while they had to continue with their jobs. How fortunate are we to live in an environment where kids don’t need screen time for stimulation, where they can just step outside into unlimited room to run and return home only when the sun starts to set.

The standard childrens’s menu in most restaurants leave little choice between chicken nuggets, a hamburger or a pizza. No colourful salad or healthy meat dish are given as options. At the tuck shop at Here are a few tips to get your kids to think differently about the food choices they make: • Talk to them about the nutrients that a specific ingredient/food group contain and why our bodies need it; • Involve them in planning the daily menu and let them choose one ingredient or dish for the day; • Recruit their help at the grocery store and ask them to select fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods; • Challenge them to try a new ingredient or something they never wanted to eat before. school kids are left with even more detrimental snack choices. And yet, we expect them to choose broccoli over chips when they are at home. If we could learn to talk to our kids about the magic of food, the information it gives our cells and its ability to either heal us or harm us, food will become so much more than just something to ease hunger with.

and the importance of supporting local farmers and producers; Never talk to kids about food and body weight. For example: “We are not eating less ice cream to not get fat, we are doing it to take care of our bodies and to support our immune system”. Food is not our enemy; Try to avoid using food or sweet treats as a reward. Rather reward them with your time; Minimize distractions by turning off the television and other electronic gadgets during meals; Have them understand that it is okay to have the occasional unhealthy snack or meal as long as they make healthier choices most of the time; Teach your kid to read food labels; Set a good example. If you eat healthy foods, your child is more likely to follow suit.

WELLNESS

Some of the healthiest foods for kids: 1. Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries make excellent snacks on their own or blended into a smoothie. 2. Beans are superfoods loaded with protein and fiber. Cheap and easy to prepare, black beans, chickpeas or kidney beans can be added to just about any dish. 3. Eggs aid in the brain development of kids and can be served at any time of day. Hide them in a salad if your child is fussy. 4. Avocadoes are an easy way of introducing healthy fats into your child’s diet and they are so versatile. Mashed on toast, thrown into a smoothie, eaten with a spoon or mixed into a tuna salad, avocadoes keep kids fuller for longer. 5. Sweet potatoes can be cooked quickly in the microwave and are packed with Vitamin A. 6. Nuts and seeds can be offered alone or with dried fruit or in home-made granola. Use nut butter in energy bites. 7. Whole-grain foods for kids include oatmeal, wholewheat pasta, brown rice and whole wheat tortillas and are an essential nutrient. 8. Citrus is a juicy treat that can satisfy their sweet tooth without any added sugar. 9. Any kind of vegetable – the more colour and great the variety, the better. 10. Greek yoghurt is a wonderful option for breakfast, as a snack or even a dessert as it contains no added sugar plus twice the protein of regular yoghurt. Add some honey when serving it to the little ones.

Remember that your child’s eating habits won’t likely change overnight – but the small steps taken daily can promote a lifetime of healthy eating. he Val de Vie Estate app will replace the current portal and PT guest systems, streamlining the process of communication with residents. The app will allow the integration of various entities affiliated with the Estate to interact and connect effortlessly. Some of the highlights of the app include an emergency button that, when activated, notifies

34 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

Estate security of the exact location where the emergency is taking place. Residents will be able to log faults such as burst pipes directly on the app and inform the HOA via geo-tagging of the location of the fault. A platform for classifieds will exist for residents to sell personal furniture, ask about available Estate services, notify other residents of rampant pets and the like. A service provider listing platform will be created for contractors wishing to advertise their services to residents. Keep an eye on the weekly newsletter and social media for the official launch of the app. The HOA is confident that this communication mechanism will be a one-stop system for our Val de Vie Estate community.

Once the sugar in the orange juice has dissolved, pour one third of the boiling juice into the egg mixture, temper and then add the rest. 6. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a jug and pour the mixture into the ramekins to the top. Bring a kettle to the boil. Pour the boiling water into the oven-tray so that the ramekins are covered with water half-way up. 7. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until slightly wobbling in the centre. 8. Once cooked, remove the ramekins from the water and leave to chill overnight or for at least 4 hours. To serve, boil a small pot of water,

olo is a sport to be enjoyed by the whole family and should be a laid-back affair. Many polo events hosted at Val de Vie Estate have brought a touch of glamour to the sport, but there is in essence very little glitz when appreciating horses galloping around at full speed in pursuit of a round white ball. Few other spectator sports offer such wide proximity to the game. With an area about three times the length of a rugby field, there is ample space to move around while adhering to social distancing. Polo patrons not only enjoy the bond between human and horse, but also the fun and relaxation

of tailgating close to the action. Tailgating is an age-old practice of parking your car next to a polo field with its rear facing the field. A festive atmosphere is created with drinks and snacks served from the comfort of your vehicle, while you are a few metres away from thundering hooves at high speed, seated on camping chairs and picnic blankets. The Val de Vie polo club invites all residents to pull up their vehicles and enjoy the beautiful outdoors while watching a game of polo.

ESTATE

THE CROSSING CROSSINGOF A LIFETIME

Q What sparked your interest in

swimming? A I love being in the water and swimming has been a hobby of mine all my life. Growing up in the Transvaal, swimming was not a major sport at my school, so I did a little swimming for the area. I started playing water polo and this boosted my strength in the pool. At the age of 16 I was selected to play water polo for the Transvaal under 19 team. I have continued playing league and masters water polo in the Cape for the past five years. Q How has living on Val de

Vie Estate influenced your swimming? A My family and I moved to Val de Vie Estate in 2015. My love for swimming only grew now that I had an indoor pool right on my doorstep and could train year-round, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Swimming is a great de-stressor for me and of course, exercises most of the body without risking injuries that one tends to experience as one ages. Since the opening of the new Myrtha Technology pool at 48 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

The Yard (arguably the best pool manufacturers in the world) in 2019, it has been amazing training in an Olympic sized pool. The quality of the water in this pool is carefully managed by the Myrtha system, it is certainly a privilege to swim in water of this standard. Q What inspired you to start

training for the Robben Island open water crossing? A I have taken part in the Midmar Mile a few times in the past having won a couple of age group sections. To add a little context the Midmar Mile is an annual swimming race that draws thousands of people to the Midmar Dam north of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. Given the fact that I could spend so much time in the pool, between the indoor pool and the 50m pool at The Yard, I was able to up my training with a Robben Island crossing in mind. I guess as a swimmer, doing the Robben Island crossing would be the equivalent of doing the Comrades marathon for a runner. Last year I set my goal on doing the Robben Island crossing on my 69th birthday, 23rd of October 2019.

Q What were the weather

conditions on the 23rd of October and how were you feeling ahead of the big swim? A There is a great deal of

preparation that goes on behind the scenes before you can start the crossing. The crossing has to be logged with a support boat following the swimmer as you swim through naval shipping routes. There were three other swimmers scheduled to do the crossing on that same day, but they all withdrew due to the conditions and the water temperature being at a low of 13 degrees Celsius. The ocean was very rough with wind speeds of around 10km per hour. I had never swum this distance in the sea before, let alone in such extremely choppy conditions, so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was 08:00 in the morning and the air temperature was around 11 degrees celsius, but I was determined to go through with my swim, so I set off with my son Adam in the support boat.

ESTATE

OF A LIFETIME

RAY MC CALLUM

Q What would you say was the

most challenging part of the crossing? A When I set off from the shores of Robben Island, I guess the most daunting part was that I could not see where I was headed due to the mist. It is the support boat’s job to keep me swimming in a straight line. The first 200 meters is through the kelp which can be quite challenging but is not really an obstacle. It takes around 20 minutes to start warming up, thereafter I seemed to get into a rhythm, after 1h30 I started feeling the cold, especially in my hands and feet.

Wearing a neoprene swimming cap helped keep my head warm, where a substantial amount of the heat is lost by a swimmer. At around two hours I started feeling a little motion sickness but managed to swim through that as I was able to see the landing point. I have been asked whether I was ever scared of swimming through shark-infested waters but I simply ignored the fact that they may be around. Towards the end of the swim the heavens opened up and it started raining. Although it didn’t

Val de Vie Estate resident Ray Mc Callum set himself the ultimate goal of swimming the Robben Island crossing for his 69th birthday. The Grapevine Team asked this Scottish born, Transvaal raised swimmer a few questions on what inspired him to do such a dangerous swim and his plans for doing the crossing once again on his 70th birthday. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M

really have any impact on me in the water the crew in the boat got drenched and were probably colder than I was when we beached at Big Bay! Training at Val de Vie Estate stood me in good stead and I finished the 7,5km crossing reasonably comfortably in a time of 2h20. Q Having done the Robben Island crossing last year, what goal are you setting yourself for 2020? A My challenge for this year will be to do the Robben Island crossing there and back without stopping on the island. I hope to do this on my 70th birthday, 23 October if conditions permit. Q How did you maintain

your swimming fitness during lockdown when the pools were closed? A During the initial phases of lockdown when the swimming facilities were closed, I got creative with some rope tethered to a drainage pipe in my pool at home. Swimming when you do not move through the water is weird and boring, keeping myself motivated

was quite difficult. I designed my training sessions by breaking it up into bite-size segments, I would also alternate the strokes between freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Q How does it feel to be able to train in the Val de Vie Estate pools again? A I have been swimming in both the indoor and outdoor pools and it has been absolutely wonderful. The pools usage has been managed exceptionally well by the Val de Vie Estate team. It has been really easy to register and book my time slot in the pool and have a designated lane to myself. As a senior citizen I feel very comfortable using the facilities, I can safely say that the pools are very safe to use during the Covid-19 lockdown period.

The Grapevine Team wishes Ray the best of luck with his crossing later this year. We hope Ray’s story can be an inspiration that no challenge is ever too big to tackle, goal too extreme to achieve or age too old to get going when you put your mind to something.

Dr Chad Marthinussen and Gino Lange are taking their Nano Wave respiratory mask global. The two entrepreneurs joined forces under the Wave Innovate banner launching a number of exciting tech products, most notably the Nano Wave respiratory mask. Through what appears to be the perfect alignment of a fantastic product and fortuitous timing, the Nano Wave brand and range of respiratory masks are now poised for global market expansion. We welcome them to the Polo Village Offices. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M Being a medical doctor, my passion and interest lies where wellness, health and technology connect. We started developing the mask in early 2019 as a solution for the healthcare industry and wanted to create a mask that felt comfortable to wear for extended periods, did not increase the temperature of the wearer, looked good and included all the features of mask protection and prevention of harmful inhalation. – Dr Chad Mathinussen Wave Innovate Co-Founder

W

ave Innovate’s Nano Wave respiratory mask has already taken the South African market by storm, being sold out regularly at pharmacies and selected resellers - the product combines award winning design, safety and comfort. Masks are here to stay while we face the Covid-19 pandemic, but options until now have been limited. Nano Wave has found the sweet spot between function and form, forged from state-of-the-art materials, a five layered filtration system, a valve system designed for easy breathing and talking in a variety of colours as well as a full junior range for children. 50 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

Nano Wave is undergoing a major brand repositioning process along with a new communication and market strategy, which will lay the foundation for global expansion into key markets. These include the USA, UK, Australasia and across the African continent. Part of this positioning is placing purpose at the center of the Nano Wave brand mission and demonstrating that profit and purpose can work in unity to drive both commercial sustainability and social impact. Wave Innovate have partnered with the Future Champs Social Enterprise to support their projects and to supply PPE products and technology for distribution through the Future Champ’s Flagship container gym in Philippi, Cape Town. This deliberate approach aims to build a brand for longevity as opposed to a reactionary response to the Covid-19 pandemic. STORIES OF OUR LOCKDOWN

With the South African nationwide lockdown new experiences and forms of sociality, solidarity and community arose across the country, especially within the Val de Vie Estate community. Life on the Estate is filled with unexpected moments, experiences and many stories to be shared. This article highlights the individuals and families who stood together in a time of uncertainty and with generosity and spirit created a neighbourhood that exemplifies that where you life, truly changes your life. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

S

haring their talent, time and hope with one another is how Val de Vie Estate residents became both closer and more resilient during the months of lockdown. The Rack family made their appreciation heard by standing outside their home every Thursday evening at 19:00 to clap and cheer for all the nurses, doctors, police and other essential workers risking their lives every day. Their enthusiasm and support were heard by neighbours across the Estate who joined in the salute to essential workers.

Thanks so much to all who participated, what a great – Ryan Rack community! There were many a celebration that had to either be held online, postponed or even cancelled due to Level 5 lockdown regulations. When these special moments are indefinitely put on hold, it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Lockdown and social distancing did not stop Val de Vie Estate residents from helping celebrate Francesca Louw’s 6th birthday. Neighbours 52 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

were quick to help with decoration ideas, suggestions and some even offered a present from their ‘gift cupboard’. Francesca woke up to sweet messages and drawings on the street outside her home from all of her friends and neighbours.

We are so lucky to have such a diverse, kind and caring community at Val de Vie, which helped make our daughter’s 6th Birthday such a memorable one – Francesca’s mother, Sydne Louw Karen Schofield-Nel, Professional Conductor of Choir and Orchestra, created a ‘Musical Lockdown

submissions from all over the world poured in, including one of our very own Val de Vie Estate staff, Duty Manager George Langdon. From professional musicians, doctors, frontline workers and simple shower singers, Karen received over 70 video submissions. A heart-warming compilation was created and edited by her son Zack who is a final year Film Directing student in Los Angeles. He too brought joy to many neighbours by singing beautiful love songs from his pool area.

I was overwhelmed and sometimes reduced to tears by the pathos and sincerity of the - Karen performances Schofield-Nel Lesley King’s sewing machine did it’s fair share of stiches during

lockdown as she sewed beautiful reusable cotton masks for her neighbours and community. Lesley is an avid seamstress who used her pile of extra fabric to create much needed masks. Over 400 masks were made with help from her friends Margaret Cloete and Sandra Muller, and donated to dustmen, contractors and Val de Vie Estate residents. Lesley stayed up burning the midnight oil to keep up with the high demand. A collection system

was derived where neighbours would collect the masks from a table in her driveway. Lesley would often be delighted to find chocolate or wine on the table as a gift from her neighbours to say thank you. What started off as a small gesture to contribute to her community, ended up raising over R1 700 for the Val de Vie Foundation Covid-19 Response Fund and someting that brought her closer to her neighbours. RESTAURANTS

DINE OUT ONCE MORE

*AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRINT, ON-SITE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION WAS NOT ALLOWED UNDER COVID-19 REGULATIONS

There is something very special about a home-cooked meal. It might be the time spent cooking with family, trying out old family recipes and enjoying a meal in the comfort of your own home. However, after months of only eating at home that slowly turned into store-bought ready-to-eat meals, a restaurant experience is something we won’t take for granted again. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

I

n Phase 3 of lockdown, the Pearl Valley Restaurant opened their kitchen with a take-away menu of some of their best dishes and a sushi menu. These take-away experiences only warmed up the taste buds and got us reminiscing of the moments shared in The Valley Restaurant. Now that the The Valley Restaurant has opened their doors for seated dining we can fully appreciate being handed a menu and getting to choose from a selection of delicious dishes. Not only is it the excitement of looking through a menu once more, but the joy of being spoilt and so well-tended to by the friendly waiters and waitresses. Being able to take a few moments on your own, as a couple or a family to treat yourself to a meal out is something we all deserve every now and then.

54 GRAPEVINE | SPRING 2020

As we slowly adjust to going back to work or leaving the house more regularly, having such a wonderful restaurant within Val de Vie Estate is a treat. All it takes is a little trip down the road, while staying in the boundaries of the Estate, and that’s it, no one has to clean the dirty dishes or wipe down the kitchen counters after dinner at home. Along with what many would consider the best sushi in Paarl, the rest of the seasonal menu with ever-changing specials caters to the entire family. It puts one’s mind at ease to know that all Covid-19 regulations and safety precautions are in place and that effortlessly dining out is possible once more. Treat yourself by visiting The Valley Restaurant to enjoy a meal in great company while overlooking the pristine Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course.

HOO’S THERE?

Our estate is home to a thriving population of owls thanks to strategically placed breeding boxes that attract these intriguing birds of prey. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

O

wls play an important role in ecosystems as natural pest controllers due to their diet that consists mainly of rodents. But it’s not only rats, mice and moles that need to be on the lookout for these predators but also small mammals, reptiles and insects. Owl boxes are designed to replicate nests of the two most common species spotted on Val de Vie Estate namely the spotted eagle owl and the barn owl. While these raptors show many similarities, their breeding methods vary, and they therefore require different types of boxes to nest and raise their young.

Barn owls are cavity nesters that sometimes end up in spaces where they are unwelcome and unsafe, for example chimneys and clock towers. From late autumn through summer these owls breed in a closed box with a hole, placed in an undisturbed area. These beautiful birds with distinct heartshaped faces remain faithful to their sites, returning year on year to a nest that is protected and weatherproof.

SECURITY

RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY

Since the last edition of the Grapevine our security team has not skipped a beat in ensuring that all residents have peace of mind when they drive through the gates of our Estate. Cold mornings, rainy late nights with howling wind and the constant awareness of the unseen presence of the Covid-19 virus has not hampered their efforts. WORDS BY LOUIS DE JAGER, SECURIT Y AND RISK MANAGER

I

f there’s one thing I am learning during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that my years of experience in human behaviour in the face of adversity needs updating. My PhD from the University of the World needs a new dissertation. Jokes aside, the security team has had to unfortunately face a couple of unpleasant experiences dealing with Estate residents who did not abide by the lockdown regulations. As we get used to

our newfound freedom of movement in Level 3 of lockdown, the challenges have tapered off and some normality has set in on daily life on the Estate. Covid-19 continues to make its demands on our time, presence and involvement in matters on the Estate and we are very fortunate to have security team members who are willing to efficiently resolve such matters. We once again ask our residents to treat our security team members with respect. Abusive language and challenging the appointed persons leads to distasteful situations that can be avoided if we stay calm and take into consideration that our staff members are only doing their job. A job that I certainly can commend them on. We brace ourselves for the remainder of 2020 and continue our commitment to be of service to our residents, albeit amidst great uncertainty. Until the next edition, I leave you with this thought: The antidote to adversity is resilience. SEPTEMBER 2020 | GRAPEVINE 73
